gaza, reducing buildings to rubble in the hamas ruled territory, sealing gaza off as israeli troops prepare for a potential ground invasion. tala emad herzelia is sheltering inside her family home in gaza. >> there's no electricity. there's no food supply. there's no water, there's no internet connection. we're not allowed to go in or out of gaza. this american woman in gaza says she feels abandoned as she tries to evacuate with her three children. >> the us embassy is not helping the us citizens in here. we call them. we applied, we submitted applications and forms. and they're not responding. >> the state department has not commented on the woman's claims on saturday, hamas militants stormed into israel, slaughtering people young and old in the streets and in their homes. >> you see the babies, the mothers, the fathers in the bedrooms, in their protection rooms, and how the terrorists

israel. the first plane carrying american ammunition has already landed in israel. sources say the us may send a second aircraft carrier to the region. the uss ford already arriving in the eastern mediterranean. >> this is about providing support to israel as it seeks to defend its territory and deal with an ongoing imminent threat from hamas terrorists who, as i said before, are acting a heck of a lot like isis terrorists in their barbarity and cruelty. president biden strongly denouncing the hamas attack. >> israel has the right to respond, indeed has a duty to respond to these vicious attacks. >> but the president did not mention iran. the white house says as of now, there's no smoking gun to show that iran directed or orchestrated the attack, even though iran has long funded hamas with the help of its oil revenues, revenues critics say have grown under the biden administration. the wall street journal also reporting hamas raised millions of dollars

in cryptocurrency before the attack. and here in washington, many congress members voicing concerns about americans still stranded in israel after several airline suspended flights. many americans now are having to go through neighboring jordan to travel out instead. >> and rhiannon justin finch in washington, thank you. >> new fraud charges this morning against controversial congressman jorge santos. he's now accused of identity theft and credit card fraud. santos responded last night. here's abc's lionel moise us this morning. >> embattled new york republican congressman jorge santos facing more charges. >> i mean, i'm just going to go defend myself. >> a 23 count superseding indictment accuses him of stealing identities, making charges with donors credit cards without their knowledge and lying to election officials. santos is charged with conspiracy to commit offenses against the us wire fraud, making materially false statements to the federal

election commission, falsifying records, aggravated identity theft and access device fraud. >> will you step down? >> i will not. i have no comment. i was in conference like everyone else without my phone, so i have nothing to talk about. i need to take a look at the whole thing. did you commit wire fraud, though? >> it's a pretty basic question. >> just last week, santos, former campaign finance chief was indicted. prosecutors say the two made donations to santos campaign from family members without their knowledge, claiming the campaign had $500,000 on hand when it had only 8000. >> look, you're all acting like i'm not entitled to due process and innocent until proven guilty. >> news of the charges came as republicans gathered behind closed doors considering a new speaker of the house majority leader steve scalise, and the founder of the freedom caucus, jim jordan, both vying to replace kevin mccarthy. but some republicans last night said they won't support either candidate.

a close call in philadelphia. >> the gunfire erupting on this street just after a school bus passed by. police say two men opened fire on a group of people, leaving one person in critical condition. dozens of shots were fired and in new jersey, a cemetery worker ended up in the hospital after falling into a grave. a funeral had just ended when the man fell through a wooden board onto the coffin and crews had to use ropes to get him out. he suffered a separated shoulder. >> more people have been turning to melatonin for help with sleeping. but a disturbing story from texas is highlighting the danger to these supplements can pose to children. this morning, a mother near houston says she's afraid to send her five year old back to school after his teacher was caught giving him and other students a sleep aid. >> they found it was melatonin gummies. i don't know the strength. the mother requesting she not be named says her son is nonverbal and in a special education class, she says she noticed something was off with

his behavior. he was completely lethargic. he was stumbling to get off the bus. >> she says the teacher had called her before asking for advice on how to calm him down. she had asked, like, besides favorite snacks, does he like gummies? the school district investigating, saying the teacher did give out melatonin acting on her own and without obtaining parent permission. the teacher did not notify campus administration nor the nurse. it is possible for children to overdose on melatonin and more children are getting ahold of it. the cdc says pediatric melatonin ingestions skyrocketed by more than 500% in the last decade, with more than 260,000 reports of kids ingesting melatonin. more than 4000 kids have had to be hospitalized. two died back in texas, the mother of that five year old is now considering placing her son in a different school district. >> your brain naturally produces this, but we don't know. i don't

>> this morning, gold medal gymnast mary lou retton is in a fight for her life. the 55 ye old former olympic champ has been in the intensive care unit for more than a week with a rare form of pneumonia. unable to breathe on her own, according to her daughter, mckenna kelly, who updated fans on social media. kelly is also asking for donations to help with medical bills, posting out of respect for her and her privacy. i will not disclose all details, however, i will disclose that she is not insured. retton gained worldwide recognition for her performance in the 1984 olympics, scoring perfect tens on her vault and floor routines. >> i'm just going to go out and do the best that i can be myself . >> you know, it was the first olympics for the then 16 year old from west virginia. she won five medals, more than any other athlete during those games, becoming a household name with
