>> good morning. it is wednesday, october 11th. i'm going to start the check of our forecast with drew. >> yeah, good morning. we have clear skies out there. some chilly spots this morning. 40 and our coolest locations from napa to santa rosa to fairfield. take that jacket with you. 50 and low 60s around the bay shoreline right now. it is breezy in our hills from our tam cam. you can clearly see it bouncing, but you can also see clear conditions. look at all of those city lights from the north bay to the city to the east bay. you can even see parts of the south bay this morning from the tam cam. expect a lot of sunshine today. one of the only issues when it comes to the forecast is the wind. later on this afternoon, especially close to the coast, we're gusting over 30mph at times. temperatures going into the 60s and 70s. let's see how we're doing on the roads this morning with gloria. good morning. >> good morning, drew. well, we're going to get started with a look at our bay bridge toll plaza camera this morning because traffic is starting to fill up right there at the toll plaza. and let's take a look at your drive times for this morning. if you're on westbound 80 from the toll plaza to san

francisco, that will take you 24 minutes. right now, the metering lights flipped on at 535 this morning. and let's get a look at your drive times this morning. you can see a couple of slowdowns on westbound. 580 from tracy to dublin. and right now it will take you 43 minutes and then on westbound four from antioch to concord for excuse me, 24 minutes. reggie, gloria, thank you. >> new overnight, a man is in custody after a standoff in san jose. police confirmed the suspect had a rifle and threatened his roommates and barricaded himself in a home on 19th street near san antonio street. that area was closed off yesterday as officers tried to get the suspect out of the home . >> developing news, israel's bombard on gaza continues hitting hundreds of targets. more than 2200 people have died on both sides, including at least 14 americans. as president biden is condemning the hamas terror attack on israel as, quote, an act of sheer evil. abc news reporter justin finch live in washington, d.c. with the

latest developments. good morning, justin coomassie good morning. >> and secretary of state antony blinken is set to travel to israel as soon as today, just as the first round of military aid from the us survives on the ground. and as president biden calls for a decisive response to hamas this morning, the israeli defense forces air assault on gaza pressing ahead. the idf striking hundreds of sites across the hamas led territory from above. an idf spokesman on why their targets appear to look like gaza civilian sites. >> if it's above ground, they locate themselves in civilian buildings and hamas being the cowards that they are, the idf also mobilizing more than 360,000 reservists, potentially preparing for a ground invasion with destruction all around. >> many families in gaza force

of the harsh realities of war. or if you have a child in this situation, a university psychologist, thomas plante, recommends talking to them about it. >> very broad strokes and say, do you have questions about that? you know, what do you want to know about this? and to try your best to try to give that message that you're willing to talk to your children in a developmentally appropriate way ? >> plante says while hatred online can impact anybody, those with connections to israel and gaza are at particular risk. according to the jewish telegraph agency, several schools around both the us and israel are urging parents to limit their children's use of social media during this time. i'm, among other things, they say that they worry about threats coming from hamas, that they would live stream the execution in of hostages. >> gloria, thank you. we continue to see widespread rallies and demonstrations across the country, including here in the bay area. local pro

officials believe that bringing a ferris wheel here to fisherman's wharf is exactly what the wharf needs to bring people back as this area is still recovering from the pandemic. now, the san francisco port commissioners have adopted a revitalization plan that could move the ferris wheel in golden gate park to appear here in fisherman's wharf. the plan still needs a couple more approvals, but it could become reality within the next month. the ferris wheel has been in golden gate park for the last three years. in the shadows of the academy of sciences and the de young museum. but moving it to the wharf would put it front and center or high and towering the bay. san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin says it's never really felt like the ferris wheel ever belonged in golden gate park, saying the plan to move it will soon go in front of a state agency for approval. >> it's a good fit. it's the right place. it kind of has that coney island feel and i think folks will embrace it. and it'll be an attraction that will help. fisherman's wharf during this

recovery period. >> if it moves forward, peskin says this is a short term plan for only six months. the city is also in the midst of testing to make sure the ferris wheel is not too heavy for the pier. and again, the goal is to have this ferris wheel up and running in the wharf in just under a month, and that's just in time for the apec economic forum. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. thank you, lena. >> san francisco's largest mall now has a new manager who is expected to turn it around. according to the chronicle, greg williams of trident pacific has been appointed as the receiver of the san francisco center. the half empty mall has been plagued with crime, prompting a lawsuit and the departure of longtime tenants like nordstrom. the owner stopped making mortgage payments back in june and handed the mall back to its lenders. nearby union square is losing another retailer. clothing store express will be closing its doors later this month. a sign

warmer temperatures continue the next couple of days. fog in some spots in the north bay and along the coast. not too dense right now, 3 to 4 miles from santa rosa to half moon bay. we'll watch those numbers. sometimes they can drop right before the sun gets up here at 7 a.m. temperatures later today, most of us going into the 70s. so it's going to feel very comfortable today. it's going to look great. it's just windy today. those winds about 15 to 30mph this afternoon, noon tonight. we'll keep those clear skies, some chilly temperatures in our sheltered valleys dipping into the 40s around the bay shoreline. we'll go into the low and mid 50s. future tracker temperatures tomorrow. it's warmer than today. we'll have 80s returning and our warmest spots. and then as we head into friday, we'll have a bit of a cooldown because we go from sun to clouds in anticipation of a light shower early saturday morning. here's the accuweather 70 forecast bright the next couple of days there's that chance of an early morning shower saturday much of saturday during the day is dry. sunday is brighter and warmer to finish out the weekend. gloria sounds nice. >> thank you, drew. right now, we are following a sig alert. so you probably remember from

in gaza say more than 1000 people have died there after israeli airstrikes. more than 150 people are being held hostage by hamas and other militant groups. some of them are americans. the white house says there are 20 us citizens who are not accounted for. and president biden promised unwavering support following a call with israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> we stand with israel. we stand with israel, and we will make sure america has what it needs to take care of its citizens and defend itself and respond to this attack. there's no justification for terrorism and all the response i'm getting from israeli practically 24 over seven has been very grateful to the president for the leadership that he has had. >> the clarity of his message. >> the first shipment of

ammunition from the us arrived in israel yesterday and more military aid is on the way. >> meanwhile, in israel, the military is expected to launch a ground assault in gaza any time now, calling up 360,000 reservists. abc news chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is on the front line. >> if anyone had any doubts about what israel's intentions were, then this should dispel it. we've seen tank after tank armored vehicle after armored vehicle and soldier after soldier for into this area. it's now looking like the start of a major land military operation. there are american citizens there who are trapped in gaza and they are pleading for help to get out. >> but so far, they've had no luck with the us embassy. >> i don't know if we're gonna make it, but i am absolutely looking forward to the help of the us embassy. we are all here feeling abandoned. that night and we're feeling that we're left alone. so we really looking

for the us embassy to help the us citizens who are living in gaza and this aerial assault on gaza is going around the clock while that us citizen was being interviewed, there were at least two explosions that could be heard in the background. >> stick with abc seven news for the latest on the conflict in israel, we'll have updates on air and on all of our platforms. just search for abc seven news bay area. >> the search for the next oakland police chief officially includes former police chief laurent armstrong. >> oakland's police commission just sent city leaders a list of the top candidates. armstrong made that list despite being fired eight months ago. mayor shengtao claimed armstrong mishandled misconduct charges against police officer in her decision to fire him. last month, an independent report cleared armstrong of any wrongdoing. he released a statement saying, quote, i believe that the mayor should rehire me as chief of police based upon the clear evidence that i acted properly and did not violate any department policies. >> it should be a no brainer for the mayor and the police

commission. and we hope that they do the right thing and write a pass wrong and put him back where he belongs as chief of police. >> the mayor's office declined to comment on the list of candidates. there are six others on the short list, but more names could be added since candidates can still submit through the end of this week. >> there's a new campaign to crack down on human trafficking in the east bay. it comes in the form of billboards at the oakland international airport. alameda county's largest transportation center, according to the da's office, alameda county is now the third largest hub for human trafficking in the country. the billboards display resources for victims who are being trafficked through the airport and want to escape. >> we're not doing enough. we're not getting to the problem. it is a billion dollar industry and our efforts have to step up to that. >> oakland mayor shengtao will also launch a new human trafficking advisory council next week.

>> governor newsom signed a bill updating california's conservatorship laws, the first time in more than 50 years. and it expands the current conservatorship law to include people who are unable to provide for their own personal safety or medical care due to either substance use or serious mental illness. the change allows courts to take testimony from trained mental health professionals to determine whether someone needs to be in a conservatorship to get treatment . san francisco mayor london breed responded, saying the bill, quote, will enable us to provide life saving behavioral health support to those who are struggling in our city and on our streets. >> the resolution to repeal a controversial flag ban in sunol did not get enough support to lead to any changes. we're talking about a policy that essentially bans the flying of the pride flag at a school there. according to the chronicle, three agenda items related to the ban did not get enough support for changes to be made. in september, a meeting turned heated when the board opened a discussion on this policy. it forbids all banners on campus, other than the us and

california state flags. house republicans on capitol hill are trying to rally behind a new speaker, with two candidates emerging as the most likely to win the gavel. this is a difficult task given the deep divisions in the party after kevin mccarthy's historic ousting from that seat earlier this month. gloria is tracking this drama from the live desk. >> good morning, reggie. today, gop members are set to discuss who will be house speaker to candidates from two completely different backgrounds are vying for the gavel. majority leader steve scalise and representative jim jordan. the gop conference gathered last night to hear from both scalise and jordan. scalise is technically next in line for the job and has been readying his career for this moment. but jordan is a chairman of the house judiciary committee and leads the impeachment inquiry into president joe biden. at least for now. representative matt gaetz, the man that led the charge to oust kevin mccarthy,

considering a proposal to move the ferris wheel from where it is right now at golden gate park to the wharf. some city leaders want to get it done in time for the apec conference, which is next month. here's abc seven news reporter lena howland with reaction to the plan. hi, lena. >> hey there. well, the plan to move the ferris wheel here to fisherman's wharf still needs a

couple more approvals, including one from state officials. it could all become a reality within the next month. take a look at this. the ferris wheel has been in golden gate park for the last three years. in the shadows of the academy of sciences and the deyoung museum. but moving it to the wharf would put it front and center or high and towering the bay in the wharf. you don't have to go far to find empty storefronts. so some city officials believe this will bring people back, as it's still recovering from the pandemic. here's what other folks in the area had to say. >> i haven't seen much change around the pier in a long time, so it'd be really cool to see something new. >> we've been on the cable car and we've been on the where were we yesterday? queuing for a long while to go to alcatraz. >> so if there was a ferris wheel down here, you'd probably go on. >> i think you'd have a good business. really >> if it moves forward, san francisco board of supervisor president aaron peskin says this is a short term plan for only six months. and the city is also

jeans, get a costume at the same time, smurfette is a shero. there you go. look how beautiful it is out there. it's so nice. >> a little windy this morning on the coast, though. >> yeah, it's going to get windier as the day goes on. so that's the only problem with today's forecast. it's beautiful out there this morning. we have clear skies, a lovely view from the exploratorium camera, a light chop on the bay water. so we have a cooler morning compared to yesterday. it's already breezy in our hills and along the coast. sunshine in this afternoon, but those winds will ramp up with the strongest gusts close to the ocean. a lot of sunshine, a little bit warmer over the next couple of days. we'll take a look at visibility because issues are there in the north bay santa rosa. we talked about how would likely drop and that's what we're seeing right now, less than a mile visibility there. we'll find that fog lingering about the next 90 minutes before it burns off as that sunshine gets up here. highs today very comfortable temperature wise, mid 60s to the mid 70s. most of us actually going into the 70s later on today. but that wind, you will notice it ramping up in the afternoon, gusting about 15 to 30mph across the region overnight tonight. we'll lose a

lot of that wind. we'll keep the clear skies, cool temperatures in the 40s for parts of the north bay around the bay shoreline. we'll go into the mid 50s heading into thursday. future tracker temperatures thursday afternoon is warmer than today. our warmest cities going into the low 90s. everybody will go above average tomorrow afternoon. here's the accuweather 70 forecast but heading into friday, we start out with sunshine giving way to cloud cover. that increased cloud cover gives way to an early morning chance of a shower on saturday morning and that's before the sun gets up here. most of the day. saturday is dry under mostly cloudy conditions. sunday brighter and warmer to end the weekend. and then next week, it's a mix of sun and clouds and temperatures at or just slightly below average for this time of the year. gloria >> yeah, drew, right now we're taking a look at traffic this morning. we do have a traffic alert. the two right lanes are currently blocked right now on the richmond-san rafael bridge. and you can see there is a bit of a slowdown here. this is on the westbound bound lanes. traffic right now is sluggish from cutting boulevard to the toll plaza and another update

for this morning. they are not allowing wide load vehicles on the bridge right now. so an alternate route would be to take highway 37. >> thank you, gloria. now to a heartwarming reunion 12 years later. a tabby cat named butters is back with his owner this morning after he ran away from their old san diego home in 2011 when the owner said they thought butters had died. but more than a decade later, they got a call from riverside county animal services because somebody found butters wandering around in the backyard of an animal services officer. so once they figured out that butters was microchipped and they knew exactly who to call, and then they flew butters to his own butters, you're right. butters does not look happy. they flew butters to seattle because that's where the owners live now our prodigal kitty has come home. >> woohoo!
