>> thanks for joining us. here are the latest pictures viewers have sent to the abc seven news i-team of car burglaries that they spotted or in some cases suffered themselves. >> sfpd says the number of car break ins is down 5% from the same time last year. and they credit the use of bait cars and the i-team's. >> dan noyes is here with more on the first arrest in this latest bait car campaign. dan? well dan and amy, police sources tell me any arrest using the car will have a big impact. the one criminal typically breaks into several cars in a single day. but you're about to see even with an arrest, sometimes it's not long before they're back on the street. this couple from indiana won't be coming back to san francisco anytime soon. it's just sad. >> it's sad to see what used to be a beautiful city come to this. >> dan and linda olliges were headed to a wedding in sonoma county last month, but they stopped to tour alcatraz prison and you saw alcatraz. how was it? >> it was awesome. fabulous. we're in a great mood after we

saw you need to open it up again . just you could use it for something. >> they left the tour boat and walked across the embarcadero to this parking lot. they thought their luggage would be safe in the rental car, but they joined the 15,357 other people who have had their cars broken into so far this year in san francisco, they lost cash. a $1,200 ipad and a $3,500 laptop. the police left a note telling the couple to come to central station. they had recovered their luggage, but they basically told us that you know, is there a chance for us getting our computers back and they said, no, you're your computer will probably end up in either vietnam or another asian country. that happened on a friday, just three days later. the ipad pinged this location in vietnam, 80,836 miles away. and that laptop containing linda's work as a photographer was long

gone. >> i thought i was going to hyperbole. he was probably the strong one in this case because i, i, you know, i mean, it was just devastating for me. >> police say they caught the man responsible for the olliges break in. 26 year old robert sansa of san francisco. now, the criminal complaint alleges on that day, september 1st, he broke into the couple's rental car. another rental car, and a san francisco police department bait car. >> they may be breaking into cars that are put out there by the san francisco police department. >> the police chief announced the new bait car campaign the week before sansa's arrest. i was there in court last week when he pled not guilty and set a trial date. and i've been researching sansa's court records in several counties over the past five years. sansa has been arrested more than a dozen times. he has convictions for car burglary, grand theft, hit and run shop lifting and more. he was on probation at the time. he's accused of breaking into the alissa's rental car. robert sansa has also been accused of evading arrest on several occasions, trying to drive away

but slamming into cars, causing injuries and putting anyone on those streets in danger. on february 2nd of last year, police responded to the japantown garage for a report of an auto burglary. officers tried to detain sansa as the suspect, but he fled, got in his car, ran over an officer's foot and hit a parked car less than three months later, court records show the police tried to arrest him in north beach. he was driving a stolen vehicle reportedly used in multiple car break ins. that day. the police was sort of trapped him. >> this is a one way street. he they trapped him down there. >> neighbors watched hassan's a hit. the two patrol cars drove onto the sidewalk and took out this staircase. >> and suddenly the whole house starts shaking and my wife starts yelling. someone just hit your vespa. >> his vespa was destroyed. he had to replace it. the complaint says sansa hit another patrol car a block away, injuring an officer, sideswiped another house. he made it to columbus

and broadway, where he hit a civilians car, injuring them. he left the car and ran into chinatown, where officers finally arrested him. at first, prosecutors charged sansa with several counts of assault upon a peace officer with a deadly weapon, hit and run, evading an officer with willful disregard and a misdemeanor possession of burglar tools in a plea deal, all the charges got dismissed except for a single count of evading an officer. >> i am out. there is no way a person doing all of that damage charge should be let off with just evading sansa got out with time served in that case a little over six months in jail, the police union president tells me deals like the one sansa got do little to prevent future crimes. why is it that we continue to give guess breaks and passes to people who just really are just showing they do not want to do the right thing

at that same news conference announcing the baker campaign, district attorney, brooke jenkins promised to prosecute car break ins more aggressively. >> that's what we are trying to re-instill in san francisco right now, is that not only will you be caught, but when you are prosecute ated, there will be a consequence for that behavior. that's a start for dan and linda. >> olga's. does it mean anything at all that the police were able to catch your guy with their bait car? it worked. i mean, they're they're law enforcement technique worked it does. >> but then, you know, let's see what happens to this guy because, you know, it wasn't his first rodeo. you know, it's a professional job. what are they going to do, slap them on the wrist and let them out? and a couple months. >> robertson's goes public defender declined to discuss his current case or the previous ones. his trial is set for november 17th, and i'll be there to follow up. dan, i'm on again. >> it's happening dozens of times a day in this. >> exactly right. >> frustrating. yeah. >> thanks, jim. >> three people are under arrest after a chase ended with a crash this afternoon on westbound highway 24 in oakland. car lost

control just past the rockridge bart station hit the median and then skidded across the freeway as you see as police closed in. three people got out of the vehicle right there. they tried to run officers immediately caught one of them, but the other two escaped by jumping over the freeway after an extensive search. they were tracked down and arrested in a nearby neighborhood, oakland police say the vehicle was wanted in connection with a shooting. >> let's move now to the latest on the escalating conflict in the middle east, with israel appearing to be getting ready for a ground offensive. israel formed a war cabinet today in what could be a sign this is going to be a lengthy war with hamas. israel reports more than 1200 people have died since fighting started on saturday. that's the most since the 1973 war with egypt and syria. gaza officials say at least 1100 have died in israeli airstrikes. israel claims 1500 hamas militants were killed inside israeli territory and hundreds more in gaza. rock hits, meanwhile, continue to fly. abc news reporter matt gutman got

caught in the middle of one of the attacks in southern israel. >> those are interceptors taking out the hamas rockets. we think this has been going on all day long. explosion after explosion. so many people in this town have just left ■military aid for israel is arriving from the united states. >> the california national guard announced today one of its engineering battalions is heading to the middle east. and the war in israel has people concerned about rising racial tensions outside of the middle east. abc's seven news reporter anzar hasan spoke with some bay area experts about their concerns. on tuesday evening. >> a rally in walnut creek turned tense as a small group calling for the end of the israeli occupation of gaza angered those rallying in solidarity with israel. rising tensions locally in the aftermath of the hamas attack on israel over the weekend and the bombardment of the gaza strip that has followed has even local lawmakers concerned over possible targeted attacks in our

community. >> we must make sure that jewish communities who have been subjected to anti-semitism are protected by local law enforcement and federal resources that we have. and we also must make sure that muslim americans are not unfairly targeted. hamas does not speak for the muslim community. >> bay area congressman eric swalwell met with local muslim and jewish leaders on tuesday, alarmed by the rise in hate crimes since just this past weekend, we've seen right now highest levels of anti-semitism that we've ever had in this nation. >> globally, 1000 anti-semitic incidents occurred just over the weekend in the uk, three times increase in france. >> mark levine, who is with the anti-defamation league, says oftentimes after an attack in israel, there's an uptick in anti-semitism. >> we have seen an uptick in increase of hate speech and actual harm to the jewish californians and jews globally.

whenever there is an attack by hamas on israel, muslim americans are also dealing with the rise in hate crimes and harassment. >> the council on american islamic relations has pointed to vandalism of islamic centers and harassment of muslim students across the country. >> we certainly don't want to confuse that for muslims as well . muslim americans had nothing to do with what occurred by hamas in the east bay. >> ansar hassan, abc seven news, social media has played a key role in how many people are getting information, how many people are getting information about what's happening in the middle east. >> and there are major concerns over misinformation being spread on social media platforms. abc's seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in the newsroom with what to look for online. >> zach, a lot of the concern has been centered around false information shared on x, formerly known as twitter. but nearly all platforms are coping with misleading or unconfirmed posts. an obvious example was a fake white house press release and multiple videos and other posts that went viral. also turned out to be

mischaracterized at one point, even x ceo elon musk recommended that users follow an account that's known for spreading disinformation. he eventually deleted that post, but experts say recent layoffs at x could be playing a role in disinformation and misinformation that are running rampant online. musk laid off thousands of employees last year, including many who are responsible for detecting and addressing false claims. now, i got to speak with the san jose state tech expert who says combating these posts requires a layered approach and that the government and social media companies should be involved. but we also can't forget our role as users, starting with looking to multiple sources for looking for information. >> the source has to be something, a source that is trusted, trustworthy. you know, you know a well-known name that they know that they're going to be liable. there will be some issues if they start spreading bad news, whether it is, you know, you know, that one about the war in the middle east or somewhere else. >> now, again, it's not just experts catching heat. meta ceo mark zuckerberg has been warned by the european union to have misinformation taken down in a

after a fiery big rig crash monday night. that crash killed just beer kyra. he's survived by his wife and two young daughters. caltran is now faced with lengthy repairs to the toll plaza. the bay area council says the toll booths should have been removed uring the pandemic when cash collection went away and they went all electric. >> nick, we all know we need to get rid of these toll booths. why the heck does it take so long and the impact is can be really catastrophic and tragic. where someone is dying, you know, crashing into toll booths. >> caltrans says it is still working on a plan to remove the damaged equipment and replace it. in the meantime, an official gofund me page has been launched for the family of jasper kyra. he is pictured here with his wife and daughters, ages three and four. >> now to a story only on abc seven. an outstanding high school graduate rejected by 16 of the 18 colleges he applied to . despite that, he got a full time job offer from google as a software engineer. abc seven news reporter suzanne phan is

live in the newsroom with the look at what college admission experts say needs to change. suzanne. >> i'm a one educational consultant told me he's not surprised that stanley young was rejected by 16 top schools. he says the college admissions process is extremely competitive. but he says there are other options out there to land a tops a spot, rather, at the top college. and in a company like google. stanley zhang told abc seven news anchor kristen sze he just landed a job at google as a software engineer without ever going to college. his path raised a lot of eyebrows and some criticism of the college admissions program. >> your gpa and sat score gpa was 4.42 weighted sat score was 1590. >> zhang was rejected by 16 of the 18 colleges he applied to. >> i really thought, you know, i had a good chance. and it turns out, however good of a chance i had, i didn't get in. >> allen coe is ceo of cardinal education in families pay his

educational consultants to help students compete against the other very qualified college applicants out there. coe is not surprised that colleges rejected zhang's application. >> asian male computer science. the probabilities are darwinian much worse than for any other demographic. >> coe says the other possible factor is he came across as too unidimensional for most universal cities. coe says all the sciences, including engineering, are very competitive programs for many reasons. >> it is getting much, much more challenging for asians to be accepted into competitive stem programs. >> coe says the admissions system needs to change there. >> absolutely needs to be reformed. the playing field can be leveled by universities being much more transparent about what the standards are at and just advertising it publicly to everybody. and if they were to do that, then you don't need private college consultants, let alone school counselors, to help students navigate it. we really want to push for transparency. >> we should be able to, you

know, if we get rejected, be able to look at, you know, these are the reasons why, why, and we shouldn't have to just kind of blindly guess in the dark about a black box process. >> zhang's case is an unusual one. education experts say there are options for students to get ahead. community colleges are a big help. >> students should definitely consider california community colleges, especially their stem major. why many universities are impacted, meaning that they're getting a lot more applicants than they have spots to serve. so this is a great way to start. and students have a better probability of getting to their university of choice by coming through the community colleges than straight out of high school. >> and counselors remind students that community colleges offer a great deal. they have the lowest tuition in the country. coe says one third of the undergrads at flagship ucs transfer from community colleges live in the newsroom. suzanne phan abc seven news. >> all right, suzanne, thank you. >> all right. let's turn our attention now to the weather. >> yeah, nice little sunset going on behind us. sandy is here with the latest.

two different people here and one similar problem. fast track mistaken charges. the good news is both have been able to successfully dispute the charges. the bad news, it's been going on for years and there might not be a long term solution on on any given day. there are dozens of cars on the max lot in san diego. the socal business buys and sells cars regularly. co-founder sean poore says some of the cars aren't even drivable yet. still, every month, he says his business receives mistaken bay area fast track bridge toll invoices. >> it's been going on for years. i mean, we've gotten at least 40, 50, maybe 60 tickets. tickets like this one, which identified a cell. >> max ford, based on the license plate read by fast tracks, optical character recognition software, but in actuality photographed a honda going over the san mateo hayward bridge. >> we just kept thinking, how the heck is this happening? >> and this one for a vehicle headed over the benicia martinez bridge with a license plate that was so difficult to read. it went to manual review where it

was still mistaken, identified because the license plate was partially covered by a plate frame. >> if they can't read it, we can't read it. i mean, how are they sending out that ticket? >> poor says cell. max's office manager spends 2 to 4 hours a month contesting bay area fast track bridge toll invoices, all of which have been successfully dismissed. >> it's a bit frustrating because it's taking a lot of time from our work day to deal with these tickets. his job description was not handling bay area toll bridges. >> john goodwin, spokesperson for the metropolitan transportation commission and bay area toll authority, is not surprised. it's unfair that this happens. >> it does happen and it happens with remarkable regularity, he says. >> the fast track system is in perfect. >> we shoot for perfection when we don't deliver, perform action. and so in that gap is some frustration, totally understandable. goodwin tells the i-team. >> if the optical character recognition software reads a license plate with a confidence rating of 98% or higher in

invoice, is generated, if the confidence level is less than 98, it is sent to manual review. an actual person reviews it. these guys work really hard. >> they have to deal with a lot of images in a really short amount of time. so they make mistakes too, goodwin says the manual reviewers make a mistake less than 1% of the time in any given month he could not provide how often the optical character recognition software gets it wrong. >> between january and june of this year for the mtc express lanes 880 and 680in contra costa county, plus the seven state owned toll bridges and the golden gate bridge. 74,025 invoices were disputed. of those, nearly 53% were 38,960 were overturned. >> i think it tells me that the system works. they get a hold of us. the chances are better than slightly better than 5050 that, hey, we'll see. you're right. you've got you've got compelling evidence. nobody has time or like a great desire to do this. yeah, i don't dispute that

either. there are manifest inconveniences to modern life. >> bob munson, a danville resident, has also been fueling those in conveniences. we like it here a lot, primarily for the proximity to the 680, which munson says he and his wife take daily to get anywhere near our street goes under 680 here with a fast track clean air vehicle toll tag munson should be able to travel toll free in the express lane on 680 and contra costa county so long as a passenger is with him and he changes the face of the tag to match the number of people in his car. but for years, he says he's been mistakenly charged in the express lane. >> if there is one person we don't get in the carpool lane. >> munson showed the i-team 13 instances of charges he says he disputed in the last year alone. how frustrating is that? >> real? >> he says for the most part, the charges have been credited. still, it's just annoying that really annoying. munson and his

wife insist they do not use the express lane when driving alone. >> now it's just not part of our personalities. >> goodwin offered to have a field operations team go out to the northern end of the 680 corridor in contra costa county and run a diagnostic check, make sure that there's nothing amiss with the reader. he also suggested the munsons try getting a new fast track toll tag, though they're doubtful that will make a difference. >> why won't you fix your system? >> as for cell, max goodwin offered to work with the company , but also said the number of issues likely reflects their large inventory. >> its volume of vehicles is going to be greater than the average bear with approximately 120 million vehicles crossing the seven state owned toll bridges alone annually. >> goodwin maintains the system works very well, while those who say they're mistakenly charged should have a different view. i just think it's not right. mtc spokesperson said he'll put in the request for that diagnosed check on 680 by the end of this week. bottom line, if you get a
