. we are starting out with clear sky. no fog out there at all. nice day on the way. a few high clouds will visit us later on today. the winds are still up there, still breezy in the upper elevations. so got to keep that in mind for elevated fire danger for the morning hours. 11 degrees cooler in oakland. it is 14 degrees cooler in half moon bay. and here's a look at those upper elevations, winds that are quite gusty. by the afternoon, they'll be more onshore and those upper elevation winds will dial back. so upper 40s in the north bay, otherwise 50s around the bay with clear sky. we'll get some higher clouds in by parts of the afternoon early on. and then later on again. but high temperatures will reach the 80s in our warmest inland valleys, dropping off through the upper 70s at about 4:00. so we'll see. pretty nice day today. a typical autumn day on the way. a cold front to timeout and talk about for your friday into saturday and that eclipse viewing. >> gloria good morning, lisa. we are continuing to follow a sig

alert this morning this is on the richmond-san rafael bridge. and you may remember that deadly crash that we were following the last few days. well, the three right lanes are still blocked right now and they're not allowing any wide load vehicles on the bridge. so you can take highway 37 to get into marin county. they're expecting it will reopen next thursday, october 19th. and here's a look at your drive time traffic right now it is slow on westbound 580 from tracy to dublin. that will take you 40 minutes. >> thank you, gloria. developing news now on the war in israel. right now the country is stepping up its offensive in gaza after this weekend's violent terrorist attacks by hamas militants. the united nations humanitarian office says more than 300,000 civilians have been displaced in gaza with little access to food or water. israel says military is says it's actively targeting hamas terror sites while amassing ground troops near the gaza strip. us secretary of state antony blinken is in israel.

he's meeting with officials there to see what kind of help the us can provide. it's estimated as many as 600 americans are currently in gaza. the white house says a total of 25 americans have died and at least 17 others are missing since the violence erupted over the weekend. when you add in the deaths being reported by israel and in gaza, the total is at least 2300, with thousands more injured. >> this attack was a campaign of pure cruelty, not just hate cruelty. my commitment is your security. and the safety of the jewish people is unshakable. the united states has israel's back , and i have yours as well, both at home and abroad. >> yesterday, israel formed a war cabinet which likely signals this could be a long conflict with hamas. >> we have an update from a san francisco businessman who's been in israel since the war started

on saturday. manny yekutiel owns manny's in san francisco, and he was visiting family when the fighting broke out. he spoke with abc seven news reporter tim johns. >> the people who are going into this war, i mean, there are parts of these communities. i was with my cousin yesterday who's my age. he was 34 years old, who's gay and who owns a coffee shop just like me. and he's getting ready to go into war for manny is currently in tel aviv, but was about 30 miles from the gaza border when hamas militants started the assault over the weekend. >> he ascribed he described he and his relatives as having to go from partying to hiding in a bomb shelter with young kids as the town was targeted by missiles. manny says he's not sure when he might be able to come back to san francisco, but he says while he's heard from some local san francisco politicians, he's heard nothing from the federal government and is trying to make plans on his own. the us state department says it is actively communicating with american citizens who are stuck in israel

and frantically trying to find ways to come home. major airlines are suspending flights to and from israel. gloria at the live desk now with one california man's story. >> good morning, kumasi. yes, we want to tell you about roy burstein. roy burstein was at the music festival in israel when the attacks started. at first, he and his cousins were all smiles. you can see the pictures right there. and then the photo shows smoke in the background. he had to run to survive. left everything behind yesterday day, he reunited with his father at lax. his father was on the phone with him when the attack started. and then all communication was cut off. >> if i was on the line with him and then the phone hang up. no signal. i didn't know where him like eight hours maybe. i didn't know where is my kids? i believe if the worst happened and i got separated from my family, you know, we went something like

five cousins. >> we came all back. so we're happy for that. and it was an emotional reunion. >> roy says he is still in shock and confused by everything that happened, but he says he is thankful to be back in los angeles. and now safe. >> kumasi thank you, gloria and make sure you stay with abc7 news for the latest on the conflict in the middle east. we're posting live updates along with deeper coverage on the types of shockwaves being felt here at home. just search abc7 news bay area. >> mayor london breed is asking her administrate ation to propose mid-year budget cuts of at least 3% from san francisco's general fund. in a statement she said city hall, quote, simply cannot wait until next year's budget process to begin to address our growing structural deficit. officials estimate the deficit could reach at least $500 million by the 2025 2026 fiscal year. the city continues to struggle to fully recover from the pandemic, according to the chronicle. the mayor told

departments to submit cost saving ideas by the end of the month. >> san francisco and alameda officials met to possibly keep the portola music festival alive despite noise complaints. after the recent festival at pier 80. the city of alameda asked for the event to be stopped or for new measures to be taken to reduce noise. but after the meeting yesterday in alameda, spokesperson told our media partners at the san francisco standard quote, our staff will continue to work in partnership with festival organizers and the san francisco entertainment commission to understand what happened and what additional steps can be taken to mitigate this ambient sound in the future . >> happening today, getting ready before the next big one, the state's office of emergency services is setting up an earthquake simulator in the bay area today. it comes ahead of next week's great california shakeout preparedness drill. abc7 news reporter lena howland live at san francisco state where the simulator is available for people to try today. lena >> hey, ritchie, good morning to you. and that's right. we are

live right now at san francisco state university where cal oes has set up an earthquake simulator specific for students to test out today. so right now, we are joined by john goodell. he's a spokesperson for cal oes and john, just set the scene for us. tell us a little bit about what's going on today and why this earthquake simulator is so important. >> yeah, so this is a second stop on a seven city statewide tour that we're doing. we're going up and down the state and making sure everybody gets prepared for the next big earthquake. they can come out here, ride the earthquake simulator, get some earthquake preparedness materials, some giveaways. we'll be out here till 1:00 today. okay >> and i think our newsroom might show a little bit of video of this of what this earthquake simulator actually looks like. i know we're going to be testing this out ourselves with you in the next half hour. but tell me a little bit about what students will feel and see when they get in this. >> yeah, so it's significant shaking. it's a magnitude 7.0. so to equate that, it was a 6.9 and loma prieta in 1989. in san francisco. so it's significant shaking. this simulator itself,

you can sit down, there's handles. so it is safe. and all the students should come out and try it out. >> and what is the one lesson you would like students to take away from this? i know there's three things that you should do if you feel an earthquake drop, cover and hold on. >> so this all leads up to the great california shakeout. so if you feel significant shaking, make sure you drop underneath something sturdy. cover your head and hold on tight. >> okay? and then why come to san francisco state university? why is it important for our students to hear this message and to actually feel it themselves? >> yeah, well, the students really, you know, i don't think they really comprehend that, you know, earthquakes are challenging thing. and sometimes the recovery is difficult. so come out here, try out the simulator, get prepared for the next earthquake. >> okay. all right. well, john, thank you so much for joining us. in the next half hour, we're going to test out this earthquake simulator for ourselves so you can see it happening live right now here at san francisco state university. that's coming up in the next half hour. for now, reporting live in san francisco, i'm lena howland, abc seven news. >> lena, thank you. and make

sure that you have a kit. have a plan. make sure that you're informed about what to do in case of an earthquake. if you need help, check out abc7 news.com slash prepare nor-cal. >> all right, good morning to you. there's a look at live doppler seven where the clouds are going up and over a ridge of high pressure. we will have a few high clouds today. but right now, kurt, look at the temperatures. look at all those 40s standing up 49 in fremont as well as gilroy, 46 in santa rosa , 47. san ramon, 54, san francisco. it is a cooler start this morning. we have some gusty upper level winds that you can see are out of the north over 20 miles an hour in the north bay, even the east foothills. so elevated fire danger for the next few hours before these subside. and we see an onshore flow that sea breeze coming back into play. here's a look at we can expect today. you can see some higher clouds throughout the morning hours. and then mostly sunny, a band of more high clouds throughout the afternoon. but overall, we'll keep it mostly sunny. partly

cloudy at times. there's a look at a cold front that's going to move through friday night and it may obscure our eclipse viewing partial eclipse begins at 805 and the maximum eclipse is at 920. but with those clouds around, it's going to be kind of tricky out there. so you can check it out. always a great time to check that out. but we will have some of the mid-level clouds. there's a look at the high clouds, 75 in oakland today, 80 a touch warmer today with a few 80s in the north bay. and into the east bay. and then a bit of a cooldown with that cold front tomorrow. reggie >> thank you, lisa. a new attraction at google's mountain view campus still ahead, a look inside of the new visitor experience center. >> and sky seven was overhead. a high speed chase that took a dramatic turn when the getaway car crashed on the highway. what happened when the suspects took off on foot and a chance to weigh in on the name for the bay

i lost control just past the rockridge bart station hit a median, skidded across the freeway. police were closing in. three people got out of the vehicle and tried to run. officers immediately caught one of them, but two escaped by jumping off the freeway. there was an extensive search, but afterward they were tracked down and arrested in a nearby neighborhood. oakland police say the vehicle was wanted in connection with a shooting in old oakland. a longtime business is set to close cafe 817 posted on its instagram page that after 30 years, it is planning to shut down next month. the post says the decision is a combination of factors from the pandemic to crime and rising costs and fewer customers. as the cafe's last day will be. saturday, november 11th. >> across the bay in san francisco, linkedin is trying to make use of its vacant office space. the company put its top

five stories of its 26 story building on the sublease market. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, the 63,000 square foot space is available through december of 2027. sunny vale based linkedin is one of many tech employers. subleased office space in the city as workers continue to stay at home. another iconic san francisco restaurant has announced it is closing its doors for good. the north beach restaurant, aptly named for its neighborhood location on the corner of columbus and stockton , blames the city's drop in tourism and conventions for its declining business. the italian eatery has served as a gathering place for locals, politicians, artists and executor lives for more than 50 years. the north beach restaurant will officially close in december. laurie thomas, who's the executive director of the golden gate restaurant association, says making ends meet has been tough for restaurants across the city , especially since the pandemic . >> with all of the costs going up for utilities, the garbage

charge, the electricity, the water going up 9% across the board for all of these vendors, each each at the start of this year, combined with the food costs, the wine costs, the gas costs for deliveries. when you continue to lose money, you can't operate a business to help give restaurants a boost. >> the golden gate restaurant association has extended restaurant week next month to hopefully draw in visitors in town for san francisco's apec conference. restaurant week will run november third through the seventh. gray will also hold special ticketed dining events during that time. >> the newly announced w nba expansion team coming to the bay area will start to play in 2025 at chase center and there has been a lot of hype. but the question remains what is the team going to be called? so now you can weigh in on that at the chronicle is collecting suggestions from the public and it's going to round up the most common responses. now one thing to think about is keeping the golden state branding or including something more

seven cloud cover offshore until late tomorrow when we get a cold front that's going to visit us, temperatures down to the mid 40s up in ukiah, 55, san francisco, 45 half moon bay. you can see some of the 40s here from napa, vallejo, san ramon and livermore. so certainly cooling off kind of typical for mid-october. looking at breezy winds in the hills this morning they'll dial back. we'll get that onshore flow and that fire danger becomes less of a concern but still quite gusty up in the hills, mostly sunny, some high clouds today. the shower chances really confined to the north bay as we get into late friday night. here is a look at what you can expect tomorrow where with some of that cloud cover, temperatures coming down a few degrees in our inland valleys. as we get into your saturday, this is the cooler day, 60 to 70. but by sunday, warming back up into the 80s. so if you're planning your weekend, sunday is the warmer day. waking up to maybe some clouds on saturday. this is friday night into early saturday. we're just a few

highway 37 to get into marin county if you have a wide load vehicle and number seven, you all the ring of fire eclipse happens saturday morning. >> it starts around 9:00. nasa predicts it will be visible from some parts of parts of california. but you're going to have to drive. it's not in the bay area. it's not happening again until 2046. nasa researchers say the building blocks for life on earth were found on a 4.5 billion year old asteroid. the first round of the studies on the bennu asteroid sample shows it contains carbon and water, both of which are essential elements for life. >> the carbon and water molecules are exactly the kinds of material that we wanted to find. they are crucial elements in the formation of our own planet side. >> scientists at nasa ames research center in mountain view helped to develop heat shield technology. it was used in a capsule that brought the asteroid sample back to earth.

two weeks ago, a southern california community is doing its part to help save endangered monarch butterflies. >> the species was near extinction in 2020, but their numbers are improving. neighbors in hollywood hills created a garden club to get people to find milkweed to help keep the butterflies alive. one resident got to small plants and ended up with two dozen caterpillars. milkweed is the only plant the monarch caterpillar will eat. >> it looks like an alien takeover there. at one point, when you had all of them just going to town on our plants, they literally chewed them to the nubs of the stalks. >> it's shocking that they've hit the endangered species list last year. we all need to take that additional step to support their populations by dedicating some of our real estate to them . >> us fish and wildlife says most breeding adult butterflies live about 2 to 5 weeks, but overwintering butterflies can live 6 to 9 months. new this morning, google is giving you a

israel and hamas. at least 2300 people have died, including at least 22 americans. the us has pledging military resources as families are waiting for any kind of word from their loved ones held in hamas custody. abc news reporter justin finch has that this morning. >> day six of israel's war with islamist militant group hamas. new israeli defense forces video showing its airstrikes shattering structures across gaza, it says are connected to terrorists and are striking what the idf calls a terrorist target in the sea. meantime in gaza, civilians struggling with an israeli imposed siege is blocking food and fuel into the hamas led territory. hospitals are at full capacity for families facing uncertainty. >> there is nothing that we can do even the place that i'm in right now is already almost out of water, almost out of food.

>> the idf accusing hamas of hiding its operations in civilian infrastructure as it mobilized more than 300,000 reservists and prepares for a ground incursion into gaza. though military officials say political leaders have not yet given them orders to proceed. the idf still uncovering death and destruction. they massacred everybody here, 112 residents of this kibbutz were were murdered . many families have now gone days without knowing where their loved ones are. this mother says her two teenagers are in hamas custody and she can't bear watching videos showing her son held hostage. >> my baby's like like like nothing holds by terrorists. it's not possible. can you imagine your child like that? >> president biden saying the us is working to help secure the

hostages release. >> folks, there's a lot we're doing a lot. we're doing. i have not given up hope. these folks home. >> national security spokesman john kirby says the administration is still gathering new information and hasn't yet made any decision on whether to send us troops into gaza to recover hostages. justin finch, abc news, washington. >> there are major concerns about misinformation being spread on social media about what's happening in the middle east. nearly all platforms are coping with misleading or unconfirmed reports. experts say recent layoffs at x, formerly known as twitter, could be playing a role in this. ceo elon musk laid off thousands of employees last year, including many who were responsible for detecting and addressing false claims. abc seven spoke with the san jose state tech expert who says it is critical to look at multiple sources before coming to a conclusion that something is true. >> and that source has to be something a source that is

trusted, trustworthy, you know, you know, a win known name that they know that they're going to be liable. there will be some issues if they start spreading bad news, whether it is, you know, you know that one about the war in the middle east or somewhere else. >> and it's not just x catching heat, the european union warned meta ceo mark zuckerberg about taking down misinformation in a timely manner. the war in israel has people concerned about rising racial tensions, even outside of the middle east. >> this is video from walnut creek on tuesday where a crowd was rallying in support of israel. it turned tense when a small group calling for the end of the israeli occupation of gaza showed up. abc7 news spoke with mark levine with the anti-defamation league. he says oftentimes after an attack in israel there is an uptick in anti-semitism. >> we've seen right now highest levels of anti-semitism that we've ever had in this nation globally, 1000 anti-semitic incidents occurred just over the

reporter lena howland. good morning, lena. >> hey, reggie. good morning. that's right, we are inside of the earthquake simulator set up right now at san francisco state university where all day long students will have the opportunity to try this out for themselves. i'm joined now by john goodell. he's a spokesperson with cal oes. john we are just about to test this out. can you tell us what we're about to experience here in a moment? >> yeah, this is going to be equivalent to a 7.0 magnitude earthquake. so it's going to be significant shaking. it's again, this is more like a universal studios ride, but if this were real life, you know, we're not going to have the ability to sit in a chair and hold on to the handle here. you're going to need a drop cover and hold on to protect yourself. so it's very important that people come out today and get earthquake prepared and try out the simulator. >> okay. all right, john, let's test it out. here we go. 7.0. i was told to hold on. here we go . so you can start to feel it.

move we're actually watching a little bit of a video inside of the earthquake simulator right now. little bit like an amusement park ride or like a universal studios type of ride. , how are you feeling in the middle of this? >> well, you can tell you have to imagine if this was your house right now, stuff would be falling off the walls. it's very unsafe. and so it's important that you protect yourself in the best way to do that is to get underneath a table, something sturdy and drop cover your head and then hold on until the shaking ends, which now it just did. but you have to assume also there's going to be aftershocks. so continue to stay under there until the shaking has completely ended. >> so in case you did not hear what he just said, that main lesson that he wants people to take away from this is if you do experience an earthquake, you're going to want to drop cover and
