6:08 am
bringing this earthquake simulator essentially on tour throughout the state. >> yeah, we want to make sure everybody in the entire state is prepared for the next earthquake and having the simulator come out here is just one part of it. but also next thursday, october 19th at ten, 19 a.m, is the great california shakeout. and everybody should practice the drop cover and hold on on that day. at that time. >> okay. and the great california shakeout, is that something that folks are actually encouraged to register for online? >> yeah, you can go to shakeout .org to register and we're talking about students offices, families, buildings, wherever. everybody in this entire state should be practicing how to drop, cover and hold on because it prepares you for the next earthquake. and it's a huge preparedness tool for life saving and so often when we talk about earthquakes and being prepared for them, we hear from experts saying it's not a matter of if, but it's a matter of when. >> so with that in mind, is there something you would want to say to folks of why it is so important to be prepared for that earthquake? >> so we can't predict earthquakes. we have cutting
6:09 am
edge technology throughout the state, but we still cannot predict earthquakes at this time. so the best tool that we have is the myshake app. you download that we've had over 2.8 million downloads. it's a great life saving tool. everybody has apps on their phone now. everybody has a tool, an app that can save your life. and so download the myshake app. you can get up to 30s of notification before you actually feel the shaking. >> and my last question for you, for the folks that are just tuning in right now, and did not watch us in the first hour, can you explain what we're seeing happening behind us in the earthquake simulator right now? yes. so this is replicates a 7.0. >> so loma prieta in 1989 was a 6.9. it's significant shaking. yes, it's a ride. but if that was real time, you'd want to drop cover and hold on to protect yourself. you're not sitting down, you're not holding on to a handle. stuff will be falling off the walls. so make sure you get underneath something sturdy, preferably a table, drop down, cover your head and vital organs and hold on until that shaking ends, as it just did. right now. >> okay, great. perfect timing, john. well, thank you so much for joining us. we are going to
6:10 am
test that earthquake simulator out in the next half hour, john and i will be very brave getting in there and we'll give you a look inside. so for reporting for now, reporting live in san francisco, i'm lena howland, abc seven news. >> all right, thank you, lena. there's so much to think about when it comes to preparing for an earthquake. get a kit, make a plan. be informed. of course, if you need help, you can check out abc7 news.com slash prepare nor-cal. still to come, slashing the budget. mayor london breed says she's going to have to cut money from certain areas to address some of the city's issues. >> then a tornado hits a popular tourist spot overnight. the damage left behind and it's a little over an hour away to sunrise and you can see we've got looks like clear sky, just a little patchy fog around half moon bay, a slightly warmer day on the way, but a couple of cold fronts to

unintended drug overdoses in san francisco in 2022. no matter how in the north bay, all aboard the smart train apparently not. it is suspending late night weekend service because people just aren't using it. according to the marin ij ridership numbers didn't track with their goals. the starlight service just launched in may after riders said they wanted it. the pilot program was billed as your date night train and smart train says it will now work on prioritizing other ridership demands, including timing of connections with the larkspur ferry. >> americans could live on the moon by the year 2040. that's what a nasa spokesperson is telling the new york times. the agency plans to build houses by bringing a3d printer to the moon and then building structures. the project is expected to be possible through new technology and through partnerships with universities and private companies. this is all expected to follow the artemis mission that will send four humans to
6:19 am
orbit the moon as early as november of next year. who all is going? >> not me. i know, right? >> who all is going? >> it's one thing to visit the moon, but no homes on the moon. wow >> a 3d printer can do everything thing. yeah. put it up. >> take the printer up there. yeah. >> what else are we going to do up there? >> i didn't think it's a time for reflection and to just kind of be peaceful. well, not be over stimuli and just relax your mind and meditate. >> that's sounds fun, but boring. >> oh, gosh, it's fun. that has been the theme of the week, right after the 49 ers players. yeah, that is funny. >> i want a spaceship to take me, but not to the moon. what are you trying to go wherever their planet is? >> you're not welcome there yet. just let's take it one step at a time. you inviting yourself somewhere? they did not come for you yet. >> this sounds exciting. they didn't come for you yet. >> hey, maybe homes are more
6:20 am
affordable on the moon. who knows? see? think about that, lisa. >> it's boring. >> yeah. we'll check out. >> how about the viewing of the moon? how about that for our eclipse? and yes, lisa, it's only going to be partially visible because we have some clouds coming into play. but if you're up at 805, that's when it starts. saturday, it's 77% will be the maximum eclipse at 920 in the morning. so the clouds hopefully will clear on out and then it ends at 1042. so we are expecting a cold front to come in late friday and perhaps bring us a few sprinkles in the north bay. but check it out for sure. there's a look at a cold front offshore. there will be series of them that will miss us, but we'll be on the tail end of them bringing in some extra cloud cover for your friday. an early saturday. so this is late friday that we could see just a couple hundreds here in the north bay. then the clouds are going to clear out this morning. we're talking about cooler temperatures. it is in the mid 40s, half moon bay, 47, palo alto, where we have 56 in san

the latest majority leader steve scalise received 113 votes, judy marie, chairman jim jordan, who was endorsed by donald trump, came up short with just 99. but until he wins, a majority of the votes in the full house, scalise will not become speaker. he can only afford to lose four republican votes. at least one congressman told reporters he will not back scalise and still supports jim jordan without a speaker. no new legislation can be introduced and no new bills can be voted on. the clock is ticking as another government shutdown deadline is looming at midnight on november 18th. scalise says the war between israel and hamas is giving urgency to the need for republicans to elect a speaker. the first order of business under speaker steve scalise is going to be bring a strong resolution expressing support for israel. abc news has learned that jim jordan is urging his colleagues to back scalise, but
