to take place without, quote, devastating humanitarian consequences. >> let's take a live look now from gaza city. it is just past 9 a.m. on thursday there right now. this is just a section of the area that is now in a race to clear out palestine citizens and united nations staff there on the ground. the order could signal an impending ground attack from israel, but its military has not officially confirmed that. >> and within the past hour, the un says close to 425,000 people have now been displaced from gaza out of a population of almost 2.5 million. the associated press reports at least 2700 people have been killed in both israel and gaza. the crisis began saturday, of course, when the hamas terror group launched a surprise assault on israeli citizens. earlier today, us government said it will begin operating evacuation flights tomorrow to help americans leave israel. of the dead, 27 have been identified as us citizens. >> tonight, law enforcement

around the country are preparing for protests and possible violence after hamas issued a call to all supporters to hold a global day of action. crews are finished unloading barriers on capitol hill tonight. the department of homeland security says there is no, quote, specific or credible threat to the us homeland. but the capitol and us cities are preparing out of an abundance of caution. in new york city, police have extra patrols at schools and houses of worship for the day. the mayor also had this message. tonight we must remain vigilant. >> new york city is the most diverse city in the world and protecting our residents is the most sacred responsibility that we have. >> the fbi says it's also monitoring various demonstrate nations tomorrow and sharing information with local agencies. san francisco police say they are on high alert. >> obviously, if anything turns violent, we won't stand for that and we'll take appropriate action in order to protect lives and property. but people are coming out to make their voices heard and practice their first

amendment rights. we will absolutely facilitate those and will be on hand to make sure it's done in a peaceful and safe manner for anyone who comes out. >> california's homeland security advisor says they have been in touch with faith leaders and communities across the state. >> and we've just learned stanford law school is moving all of its classes tomorrow to zoom over fears of violence because of ongoing tensions on campus. now that's according to the stanford daily newspaper. a message from the interim dean reportedly says the school is not facing any credible threats. this is just out of an abundance of caution and this war is causing a jolt at several of our nation's universities and college campuses. today, a group of students at the university of north carolina protested in support of palestinians in columbia university in new york city, closed its manhattan campus to allow for dual pro-israel and pro-peace protests. and those same tensions, of course, being felt right here at home. again, as students watch what's happening in the middle east, there are becoming worried about their own

sense of security. >> abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez found one example of what community leaders say is a concerning trend and i years old. >> his favorite subject at his south bay school is music and this week he's had to field a lot of questions about the israel-gaza conflict. i felt a bit worse towards the beginning of the week, but i got more questions actually today. his parents say they've raised their sons to know the history of palestine, where they still have family helping them just constantly be aware and think about what's happening around them and not be afraid to talk, because that's sometimes our most powerful tool is being able to talk and raise awareness, ahmed says the conversations he's had at school with friends or other classmates have been welcoming. but he said one parent told him not to speak up and this was his response. >> i don't think it's very just just to lower my voice about how palestinians are being oppressed and losing their lives.

>> the executive director for the local chapter of the council on american islamic relations said she's been overwhelmed with the amount of concern members in the community are coming to her with. >> someone said this to me right before i started talking to you, she said. the fear and tension on campus is palpable below said a contributing factor to the concern, then, are the statements some school districts and leaders are issuing. we saw statements that were gently one sided, and then we saw statements that were vitriolic and said, you know, we stand with israel, which implies that the expense of the over 2 million people, of which more than half are children at the muslim community association, volunteer samir lemoine said he too, is working with school administrators and parents on how to have a healthy dialog. >> i understand if you want to support the victims of the conflict, atrocities are horrific that are being reported and it is difficult to wrap your

to the growing dangers they face . the people at this rally tell me that since the start of the pandemic, crimes against letter carriers have increased exponentially, with one of the biggest rises just speaking in the past few months, we have lost some employees. >> they have resigned after being robbed. some of them are still out and have not come back because of the post traumatic stress of being robbed. >> edward fletcher is the head of the regional nalc. he tells me several of the people in his union have reported being assaulted, robbed and threatened while on the job. >> i had finished my route and i was doing another route in west oakland and i was at a mailbox and i thought i heard someone asking me a question and i turned around and there's a man with a shotgun. >> these workers are now demanding better protection from local leaders. they believe having extra police, as well as harsher punishments for those caught are key. the prosecutor rates for these crimes are alarming low. >> i mean, in the teens, despite the challenges, though, many of these folks say they'll continue to do their jobs simply dedicated to the community they

medical, financial or employment issues. it gets people off the streets. >> they get a place to live. we get people in our homes, you know, obviously this is our rentals. so, you know, everybody wins. >> the creator of the program just started with just one home. now she has 22 homes and more than 80 tenants and our next breakthrough on the housing front is a new project in san francisco to get more affordable housing in the city. we checked out the very beginnings of the transformation going on in the dogpatch neighborhood called power station. block seven b. it will upgrade the 29 acre site of what is currently a decommissioned power station. >> so what do we have here? when we're done with this project, what we're going to have 2600 units, 30, which will be affordable. >> the first phase will bring 105 new homes to the area, but the full project will add seven acres of parks and open space restaurants, cafes, shops and stores, as well as a front row

the eclipse will end at 1042. so let's take a look at the cloud cover and you will see what it's going to look like. yeah, heavy cloud cover across the region as a system is going to be moving through. the one thing that you will notice is there will be parts of the inland areas of the south bay and possibly the east bay where you may get a glimpse of it. so good luck if you are going to check it out. el nino advisory came out today. climate prediction center says the warmer than average sea surface temperatures near the equator are continuing in the pacific. and this is what they are saying. there's an 80% chance that this event continues through spring. it's a strong event, 75 to 85% through the winter and a 3 in 10 chance of historically strong event that rivals the 2015 2016 event and the 1997 98 one that one the 9798. i vividly remember. and that was really rough for much

of the bay area and monterey bay , as you probably recall as well . we're not going to talk about that yet. we're going to talk about how beautiful it was. picture perfect day, pier 39 this evening, just some high clouds filtering the sunshine. temperatures did come up today into the upper 60s to low 80s out ahead of this system which has been sending us the higher clouds. today we're seeing them right now. that's going to help to insulate us. so it's not going to be quite as chilly as it was this morning when we had some low 40s. right now, the numbers are in the 50s and the 60s ocean temperature, 59 degrees. a stunning view from our mount tam cam as we look back towards san francisco. cloudier and a little cooler tomorrow. chance of showers in the north bay tomorrow evening lingering into early saturday and then sunny and warmer on sunday. so there go all the clouds all day tomorrow. and then 10:00, we see the possibility of a few sprinkles in the north bay, maybe a couple of showers going into early saturday. you could see some drizzle along the coast. so don't be surprised if you do
