devastating humanitarian consequences. >> let's take a live look now from gaza city. it is just past 9 a.m. on thursday there right now. this is just a section of the area that is now in a race to clear out palestine citizens and united nations staff there on the ground. the order could signal an impending ground attack from israel, but its military has not officially confirmed that. >> and within the past hour, the un says close to 425,000 people have now been displaced from gaza out of a population of almost 2.5 million. the associated press reports at least 2700 people have been killed in both israel and gaza. the crisis began saturday, of course, when the hamas terror group launched a surprise assault on israeli citizens. earlier today, us government said it will begin operating evacuation flights tomorrow to help americans leave israel. of the dead, 27 have been identified as us citizens. >> tonight, law enforcement around the country are preparing for protests and possible

violence after hamas issued a call to all supporters to hold a global day of action. crews are finished unloading barriers on capitol hill tonight. the department of homeland security says there is no, quote, specific or credible threat to the us homeland. but the capitol and us cities are preparing out of an abundance of caution. in new york city, police have extra patrols at schools and houses of worship for the day. the mayor also had this message. tonight we must remain vigilant. >> new york city is the most diverse city in the world and protecting our residents is the most sacred responsibility that we have. >> the fbi says it's also monitoring various demonstrate nations tomorrow and sharing information with local agencies. san francisco police say they are on high alert. >> obviously, if anything turns violent, we won't stand for that and we'll take appropriate action in order to protect lives and property. but people are coming out to make their voices heard and practice their first amendment rights. we will absolutely facilitate those and

will be on hand to make sure it's done in a peaceful and safe manner for anyone who comes out. >> california's homeland security advisor says they have been in touch with faith leaders and communities across the state. >> and we've just learned stanford law school is moving all of its classes tomorrow to zoom over fears of violence because of ongoing tensions on campus. now that's according to the stanford daily newspaper. a message from the interim dean reportedly says the school is not facing any credible threats. this is just out of an abundance of caution and this war is causing a jolt at several of our nation's universities and college campuses. today, a group of students at the university of north carolina protested in support of palestinians in columbia university in new york city, closed its manhattan campus to allow for dual pro-israel and pro-peace protests. and those same tensions, of course, being felt right here at home. again, as students watch what's happening in the middle east, there are becoming worried about their own sense of security. >> abc7 news south bay reporter

lauren martinez found one example of what community leaders say is a concerning trend and i years old. >> his favorite subject at his south bay school is music and this week he's had to field a lot of questions about the israel-gaza conflict. i felt a bit worse towards the beginning of the week, but i got more questions actually today. his parents say they've raised their sons to know the history of palestine, where they still have family helping them just constantly be aware and think about what's happening around them and not be afraid to talk, because that's sometimes our most powerful tool is being able to talk and raise awareness, ahmed says the conversations he's had at school with friends or other classmates have been welcoming. but he said one parent told him not to speak up and this was his response. >> i don't think it's very just just to lower my voice about how palestinians are being oppressed and losing their lives. >> the executive director for the local chapter of the council

on american islamic relations said she's been overwhelmed with the amount of concern members in the community are coming to her with. >> someone said this to me right before i started talking to you, she said. the fear and tension on campus is palpable below said a contributing factor to the concern, then, are the statements some school districts and leaders are issuing. we saw statements that were gently one sided, and then we saw statements that were vitriolic and said, you know, we stand with israel, which implies that the expense of the over 2 million people, of which more than half are children at the muslim community association, volunteer samir lemoine said he too, is working with school administrators and parents on how to have a healthy dialog. >> i understand if you want to support the victims of the conflict, atrocities are horrific that are being reported and it is difficult to wrap your head around. but it's impacting

. the people at this rally tell me that since the start of the pandemic, crimes against letter carriers have increased exponentially, with one of the biggest rises just speaking in the past few months, we have lost some employees. >> they have resigned after being robbed. some of them are still out and have not come back because of the post traumatic stress of being robbed. >> edward fletcher is the head of the regional nalc. he tells me several of the people in his union have reported being assaulted, robbed and threatened while on the job. >> i had finished my route and i was doing another route in west oakland and i was at a mailbox and i thought i heard someone asking me a question and i turned around and there's a man with a shotgun. >> these workers are now demanding better protection from local leaders. they believe having extra police, as well as harsher punishments for those caught are key. the prosecutor rates for these crimes are alarming low. >> i mean, in the teens, despite the challenges, though, many of these folks say they'll continue to do their jobs simply dedicated to the community they love. >> i'm pick to this job.

>> i mean, i've got little kids that call my name. i've got senior citizens who are shut ins that depend on the mail. so i don't think about it. i guess i'm hoping it's going to get fixed in oakland. >> tim johns for abc seven news. >> now, beyond those ten people arrested for crimes against postal workers, investigators say there are still other offenders out there. of course, it's why the usps is raising the reward for reporting postal crimes to $150,000 to suspects robbed a mail carrier in san francisco back in june by the presidio golf course. contact the us postal inspection service if you know more about it. all right. >> let's get to our weather with that 24 hour accuweather forecast and how our weekend is shaping up. abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel is checking out some possible rain chances ahead. sandhya. yeah, it's a small chance but some people will see the opportunity for some rain. >> let me show you the planner first. tomorrow morning when the sun comes up at 716, you'll notice the temperatures are in the low to mid 50s. the clouds

will increase at lunch. highs will be in. the temperatures will be in the 60s. highs at 4:00 pm. a little cooler than today. low 60s to upper 70s. and once that sun sets, it'll be mostly cloudy, leading up to the possibility of some wet weather in the north bay. you will notice that on live doppler seven there's a system heading in our direction an already sending us some clouds. i'll let you know hour by hour when some areas may get wet and if the wet weather may impact the viewing for the solar eclipse. i'll be back with all of that coming right up. >> dan okay. sandhya thanks a lot. developing news from washington and the house speaker. chaos it's back to the drawing board tonight for the republicans. louisiana congressman steve scalise withdrew from the race for house speaker after it became clear he simply did not have enough votes to win the gavel. republicans remain divided on how to move forward and members will meet tomorrow morning. >> if you look at over the last few weeks, if you look at where our conference is, there's still

work to be done. our conference still has to come together and is not there. >> we don't want this. you know, it's validating to me is how do you allow for percent of the conference to do this to the entire country? >> all eyes are shifting to tim jordan of ohio. he received the endorsement of former president trump but lost to scalise in a straw poll. >> every day here at abc7, our focus is finding stories that push to help build a better bay area in meaningful ways. and tonight we are sharing some of those breakthroughs with real results when it comes to our housing crisis. as we start in the north bay where we went out to follow one nonprofit finding success in renting shared homes to people once homeless. but this is where i spend my day, is in the kitchen and the dining room and outside the group is called share in rohnert park. it leases three bed, two bath homes. residents pay what they can in rent based on their income. each house has a case manager to help tenants with medical, financial or employment

issues. it gets people off the streets. >> they get a place to live. we get people in our homes, you know, obviously this is our rentals. so, you know, everybody wins. >> the creator of the program just started with just one home. now she has 22 homes and more than 80 tenants and our next breakthrough on the housing front is a new project in san francisco to get more affordable housing in the city. we checked out the very beginnings of the transformation going on in the dogpatch neighborhood called power station. block seven b. it will upgrade the 29 acre site of what is currently a decommissioned power station. >> so what do we have here? when we're done with this project, what we're going to have 2600 units, 30, which will be affordable. >> the first phase will bring 105 new homes to the area, but the full project will add seven acres of parks and open space restaurants, cafes, shops and stores, as well as a front row claim to a piece of san

francisco waterfront art. and our final abc seven building a better bay area housing breakthrough. is change coming at the state level? governor newsom has signed three new laws. the first is a law expanding housing streamline in san francisco, the second is a law allowing churches, nonprofit colleges and other approved organizations to build affordable housing on their land. according to state senator scott wiener, a third law will give san francisco funds to build 6000 affordable homes. >> big changes are coming for those controversial driverless cruise cars. what they might do to fix some of the problems and new at 11 making sense of menopause. there are some important facts to keep in mind. and they couldn't have come at a better time. plus this is an opportunity to see a very rare event. make sure you look up this weekend the best way you can see the ring of fire pass overhead. >> first, a look at what's coming up tonight on jimmy kimmel live right after abc seven news at 11. jimmy >> thanks, dan and alma.

all nfl teams are holding a moment of silence before their games this week to recognize the situation in israel and the nba. the brooklyn nets held one prior to their game against a team from israel. if you collect social security, be prepared to see a tiny boost next year. >> the cost of living adjustment or cola, means recipients will receive about $59 more every month, beginning in january. it's a much smaller increase in the past two years, largely because of inflation. next year's increase was just over 3% compared to this year's increase of 8.7. now many recipients are left disappointed and say it's scary. >> it's disappoint painting. i think we should be outraged by it. the 3.2% is not enough for most seniors to live on. >> i mean, we look at we see what's happening with inflation. all you have to do is look at gas prices. >> a spokesperson with the southern california nonprofit serving seniors says most seniors spend up to 80% of their benefits on housing. their organization helps them with

food and affordable housing. >> all right. new developments with crews and its robo taxis that roam the streets of san francisco. upgrades are being made to better handle emergency situations. we've reported on several incidents where vehicles have gotten stuck and blocked traffic. the final straw might have come when a pedestrian got struck and run at hit and run. that then had crews vehicle run over her and stop when a lot of the companies are trying to do is collect video data from their driving operations in which the av is nearby. >> one of these emergency response vehicles and specifically train lane algorithms to understand, hey, there's an emergency response vehicle. categorically the vehicle needs to behave differently. >> cruise vehicles will also receive notifications directly from the city to help avoid emergency scenes. >> entirely new at 11. menopause is having a moment, and some would say it's about time. it's

skyward for your chance to see a rare solar eclipse around 9:30 a.m. it's a really simple process. >> all you need is a cereal box, a white piece of paper and some aluminum foil. so once again, once you have your viewing device all done, you're going to want to put your back towards the sun. put your eye in one hole and watch as the sun goes through the other hole. >> all right. that's drew explained how you can see this ring of fire, solar eclipse with a homemade device safely because you can't look directly at it. of course, the state's power grid will also be tested. it will be using the eclipse to help prepare for a drop in grid and solar power. when a total eclipse hits on april 8th of next year. but this ring of fire looks like it's going to be so, so dramatic. i hope we can see it. >> all of the loss and return of the solar cal abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel for more. >> sandhya yeah. >> and alma and dan, if you are lucky, you'll get a chance to view it because the clouds are

going to interfere here. so let me show you what you can expect for the annular solar eclipse. it'll be a partial eclipse here. it starts at 805 in the morning, maximum eclipse is at 920. and the eclipse will end at 1042. so let's take a look at the cloud cover and you will see what it's going to look like. yeah, heavy cloud cover across the region as a system is going to be moving through. the one thing that you will notice is there will be parts of the inland areas of the south bay and possibly the east bay where you may get a glimpse of it. so good luck if you are going to check it out. el nino advisory came out today. climate prediction center says the warmer than average sea surface temperatures near the equator are continuing in the pacific. and this is what they are saying. there's an 80% chance that this event continues through spring. it's a strong event, 75 to 85% through the winter and a 3 in 10 chance of historically strong event that

rivals the 2015 2016 event and the 1997 98 one that one the 9798. i vividly remember. and that was really rough for much of the bay area and monterey bay , as you probably recall as well . we're not going to talk about that yet. we're going to talk about how beautiful it was. picture perfect day, pier 39 this evening, just some high clouds filtering the sunshine. temperatures did come up today into the upper 60s to low 80s out ahead of this system which has been sending us the higher clouds. today we're seeing them right now. that's going to help to insulate us. so it's not going to be quite as chilly as it was this morning when we had some low 40s. right now, the numbers are in the 50s and the 60s ocean temperature, 59 degrees. a stunning view from our mount tam cam as we look back towards san francisco. cloudier and a little cooler tomorrow. chance of showers in the north bay tomorrow evening lingering into early saturday and then sunny and warmer on sunday. so there go all the clouds all day tomorrow. and
