among the 13 hostages that were killed. also breaking overnight, israel has ordered more than 1 million people to evacuate northern gaza, saying a significant military operation is imminent. israel has been bombarding gaza overnight. >> here at home, vigils are being held to honor the people slaughtered during the hamas attack. this memorial was on the steps of the us capitol last night. as israel prepares to ramp up its military action this morning, what could be an unprecedented evacuation, israel is calling for 1.1 million people in northern gaza to leave their homes in the next 24 hours and move south for protection. israel saying hamas terrorists are hiding in tunnels under homes. a un spokesman responding saying the united nations considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences. >> liz, the situation is just, just unbelievable, catastrophic and devastating for us. >> israel says more than 6000 bombs have been dropped on gaza

since saturday after hamas militants slaughtered at least 1200 people in nearby israeli border towns. israel's siege has left palestinians in the hamas led territory with nowhere to go . desperate for food, fuel and medicine. >> there's no shelter in gaza. all the crossings are closed, even those designated as shelters, they're not fit or adequate to shelter people. >> according to the un hospitals in gaza are at a breaking point, saying hospitals have only a few hours of electricity each day as they are forced to ration depleting fuel reserves and rely on generators. an estimated 340,000 people in gaza have been forced from their homes. >> yesterday was very hard. >> tala herzl, a college student, says a bomb landed close to her home. then she pointed to the window, showing a funeral in the street below the palestinian health ministry says israeli airstrikes have killed more than 1400 people in gaza back in israel, us secretary of state antony blinken described the gruesome images he reviewed showing victims of last weekend's attack by hamas.

and led away right through there. let's give you a sense of how many infiltrators there still are here. how many people are on this side of the border. >> more tragic stories are emerging from victims, loved ones. a canadian man says hamas militants attacked his grandmother, took her phone and then on her own facebook page posted a video of her dying. >> they not only took her phone and posted her dying body for us to see, but they also burned down her house and the entire community. >> overnight, israelis held this vigil around a fountain in tel aviv as the former israeli ambassador to the us delivered this warning. >> we are at the beginning of this war. we're not even at the end of the beginning. >> as for the us response, a pentagon official says the us does not plan to send troops to israel. >> iran will not be getting any of the $6 billion in oil money unfrozen as part of a prisoner swap. anytime soon. the us and qatar have agreed to block iran from accessing accessing the money amid concerns about iran

funding hamas. meanwhile, the state department is arranging charter flights for americans trying to leave israel. beginning today, us citizens will be flown first to europe in the meantime, police from los angeles all the way to new york are on high alert with hamas calling for global protests. this morning, law enforcement officers across the country on heightened alert after hamas call for a global day of rage. the los angeles county sheriff's office is pulling personnel from specialized units to increase visibility. >> he says shallow law in new york. >> congregants from dozens of synagogues prayed for peace as helicopter was watch for suspicious vehicles from above and boats with radiation detectors patrolled the waters. the nypd telling its officers to prepare for 12 hour shifts. >> we have directed the nypd to surge additional resources to schools, houses of worship to ensure that they are safe. >> in michigan, police arrested

a person in connection with an online threat against palestinian americans in dearborn. federal officials say they know of no specific plans for violence in the us, but the war in the middle east has prompted strong reaction across the country, especially on college campuses. barricades separated pro-palestinian and pro-israel students at columbia university, republican and at harvard. the schools palestinian solidarity committee has faced backlash after releasing a statement signed by more than 30 student groups saying they held the israeli regime entire responsible for all unfolding violence. a truck is now driving around harvard's campus, allegedly naming people who were part of the groups and ceos from major corporations are calling for the students names to be released. >> if people are actually signing on to that statement, we would want to be able to make sure that we're not hiring those

individuals. >> so last night, the president of harvard condemned the hamas attack, but she also rejected calls to name and punish those students who signed that statement. >> new turmoil. meanwhile, on capitol hill. congress man steve scalise, the man nominated to become the next speaker of the house, has suddenly pulled out after failing to secure enough votes. so what happens now? abc's faith abubey is here with those details. faith, good morning. >> good morning to you, andrew. just one day after becoming the nominee for house speaker, scalise is out and jim jordan may be back in. it's a day ten on capitol hill without a speaker of the house. and this morning, new questions about who can unite the republican party after majority leader steve scalise suddenly withdrew from the race to replace kevin mccarthy. >> but there are some folks that really need to look in the mirror over the next couple of days and decide are we going to get it back on track? are they going to try to pursue their own agenda? you can't do both. >> scalise won the nomination this week, but some house members have voiced concerns about his health as he battles blood cancer. critics also

questioned some of his moves behind the scenes overnight. abc's rachel scott speaking with scalise. >> he met with republicans behind closed doors twice today for a few hours, and he left with less support than he had when he initially walked in. and of course, all of this comes just about a week after kevin mccarthy was ousted by a handful of members of his own party, along with democrats. >> the house has been paralyzed without a leader unable to pass new aid for israel, frustrating many lawmakers, including the republican conference. and now adding to the chaos, the man scalise beat for the nomination, congressman jim jordan, a conservative firebrand who appears to be throwing his name back in the ring. sources say he's working the phones, asking for support. we're going to need is a conference. >> i think we will come together behind a candidate and then we'll move forward for the for the good of the country. >> despite the turmoil, florida congressman matt gaetz, who was instrumental in ousting mccarthy as speaker, saying he doesn't regret his position. people say it's chaos here just because the

special interests don't have a unified way to control everything. >> i have no regrets. well andrew, republicans will meet again this morning to try to find some consensus. >> and they've already met for about 12 hours. one member said that right now, even the lord jesus christ himself couldn't get the 217 votes he needed to become speaker. so that's saying a lot. >> still no leader in the house faith. thank you. new jersey senator bob menendez, meanwhile, faces new charges in his corruption scandal. he's now accused of conspiring to act as a foreign agent. his fellow democrat, senator john fetterman, is calling on the senate to expel menendez last month, he was accused of accepting gold bars for political favors. he pleaded not guilty. turning to the economy now, prices kept rising last month. >> the latest inflation report says prices were 3.7% higher than a year ago. that's slightly worse than predicted. meanwhile, social security recipients will get a cost of living increase next year of 3.2. >> time now for your friday

new 2020. >> tonight on abc >> breaking overnight, an off duty police officer was shot and killed in a parking garage at philadelphia's airport. a second officer was injured. police say the officers were confronting people, breaking into cars when a suspect opened fire. a person matching one suspect's description later died at the hospital. now to the verdict in the death of elijah mcclain. >> the young colorado man subdued by police who died after being injected with ketamine. one officer has been convicted, but mcclain's mother not happy with the jury's other decision. abc's andrea fujii explains us this morning. >> a split verdict in the case of a colorado man who died after being subdued by police. >> we, the jury, find the defendant, randy rodimer, guilty of criminally negligent homicide. we the jury, find the defendant, jason rosenblatt, not

guilty. a jury finding former officer randy rodimer guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third degree assault in the death of elijah mcclain. >> but former officer jason rosenblatt acquitted. the case dates back to august 2019, when the 23 year old was walking home from a convenience store in aurora. someone called police reporting a, quote, sketchy person wearing a ski mask. mcclain was detained and can be heard pleading with officers. >> was i'm so sorry, dude. i have no place. i don't do that stuff. >> i don't do any fighting. >> the incident escalated with mcclain in a chokehold struggling to breathe when paramedics arrived, they injected mcclain with what ended up being a lethal dose of the sedative ketamine. prosecutors argued mcclain would still be alive had it not been for the officers use of force. mcclain's mother wiping away tears, not happy with the split verdict. this is the divided states of

message urging you to click on a link to learn more about a problem with your delivery. the messages are similar to this one claiming to be from the postal service, saying your parcels cannot be delivered due to incomplete address info asking you to click a link to update your address information. >> i have had a couple people say that they did click on it and nobody's reported that they've actually put their information in, but several people i know thought that it was real for sure. scammers are coming out. the holidays are always a really bad time for scamming. >> michigan's attorney general issuing a warning, saying clicking on fraudulent links can lead to identity theft. the installation of malware on your device and could lead to your contact information being sold to other bad actors. the postal service says text messages or emails will not be sent to a customer unless you registered on their website to receive those kinds of updates and it says the postal service messages will not contain a link later on. good morning america tips
