leave the major cities across the united states on high alert following a call from a former leader of hamas for supporters to hold a global day of action. >> the bay area university already taking precautions. and the conflict in the middle east is causing tensions here at home, especially for young ones. >> we're hearing from one family in the south bay who says the war has shaken their sense of security. >> good morning to you on this friday, october 13th. >> we have a lot to get to this morning. want to start the check of our forecast with drew. hey, good morning. >> we're beginning today with partly cloudy skies. a live look from the explorator camera showing you it is a quiet start to the day. but as the day rolls on, we'll find cloud cover thickening ahead of a cold front that will likely bring a few light showers to parts of the north bay later on this evening. right now, some of our coolest spots beginning in the 40s in the north bay, around the bay shoreline. we're starting our day mainly in the mid 50s on this friday. here's future weather. we'll start to see those clouds thicken before lunchtime. temperatures right around 11 a.m. in the 60s and

70s. and then there you can see by 2 p.m. or turning to partly sunny skies and then into the evening hours, we'll likely track the chance of an isolated shower in the north bay. again, it's nothing widespread. it's another weak, quick moving front that is going to cross us over the next 24 hours. so sunshine to cloud cover, partly sunny today. temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s kumasi. >> thank you, drew. developing news on the war in israel. starting today, the biden administration is arranging charter flights for us citizens looking to leave israel. white house spokesperson john kirby says the flights are for americans and their immediate family members. details are still being finalized, including if the flights will be free. israel's military is urging more than a million people who are living right now in the northern gaza strip to leave before midnight. there is which is just under nine hours from now for these evacuate alerts come one week after hamas stormed israeli neighborhoods, at least 27 americans have been killed. and this morning, there are new signs that israel may be on the

we have. >> the fbi says they are also monitoring various demonstrations today and sharing information with local agencies. san francisco police say they are on high alert. obviously see if anything turns violent. >> we won't stand for that and we'll take appropriate action in order to protect lives and property. but people are coming out to make their voices heard and practice their their first amendment rights. we will absolutely facilitate those and we'll be on hand to make sure it's done in a peaceful and safe manner for anyone who comes out. >> california's homeland security advisor says they've been in touch with faith leaders and communities across the state. abc seven has learned stanford law school is moving all of its classes to zoom today over fears of violence because of the ongoing tensions on campus. that's according to the stanford daily newspaper. a message from the interim dean reportedly says the school is not facing any credible threats, that this is out of an abundance of caution. the war is causing a jolt at several of our nation's

universities and college campuses. yesterday, a group of students at the university of north carolina protested in support of palestinians. columbia university in new york city closed its manhattan campus to allow for dual pro-israel and pro-palestinian protests as those same tensions are being felt right here at home, as students are watching what's happening in the middle east, they're becoming concerned about their own sense of security. >> abc seven news south bay reporter laura martinez found one example of what community leaders say is a concerning trend. >> armored shubert is 13 years old. his favorite subject at his south bay school is music. this week, he's had to field a lot of questions about the israel-gaza conflict. >> i felt a bit worse towards the beginning of the week, but i got more questions actually today. >> his parents say they've raised their sons to know the history of palestine, where they still have family helping them just constantly be aware and think about what's happening around them and not be afraid to talk, because that's sometimes

our most powerful tool is being able to talk and raise awareness. ahmed says the conversations he's had at school with friends or other classmates have been welcoming. but he said one parent told him not to speak up and this was his response. >> i don't think it's very just to lower my voice about how palestinians are being oppressed and losing their lives. >> the executive director for the local chapter of the council on american islamic relations said she's been overwhelmed with the amount of concern members in the community are coming to her with. >> someone said this to me right before i started talking to you, she said. the fear and tension on campus is palpable below said a contributing factor to the concern in are the statements some school districts and leaders are issuing. we saw statements that were gentle, gently one sided, and then we saw statements that were vitriolic and said, you know, we stand with israel, which implies that the expense of the over 2

is live in san francisco with what teachers are demanding from these contract negotiations. lena >> well, reggie, just yesterday more than 3000 san francisco unified teachers cast their ballot and 97% of them voted to authorize a strike. now even though it was overwhelmingly approved, that does not mean the teachers are going to walk out, but it does now give union leaders the power to call one. after the strike was authorized, the district put out a new offer with a $10,000 raise for all credentialed teachers with a 4% raise for next year. the union, however, is asking for a 12 for a $12,000 raise this year and a 7.5% raise for next year. >> our educator vacancies are skyrocketing, impacting every child in sfusd and every school site. we cannot we cannot agree to what the district currently has, and we will make that

known. so many schools are performing staffing, gymnastics, putting teachers in positions that are not their expertise, asking them to wear several hats. >> this is not fair and it is not sustainable. >> the union that represents 900 para educators food service workers and custodians also authorized a strike last week. they want the district to keep up with what the city pays for similar jobs, which they say is up to 25% higher in a statement, the district said, our employees are critical to creating an educational environment where each and every student can learn and thrive. we want to reach an agreement that honors our employees contribution and ensures we are responsibly stewarding public funds. now there is another negotiation session scheduled for monday as as soon as any information comes out of that, we will let you know what happens for now, reporting live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news.

>> thanks, lena 5-10 this morning we have some cool numbers right now in the north bay where some of our chillier spots starting out in the 40s from santa rosa to rohnert park to petaluma, sebastopol. good morning. you're coming in at 46 degrees outside of the north bay. it's a little bit warmer. we're finding numbers mainly in the 50s as we begin our friday. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite. we're tracking our next cold front. you can clearly see it with all of that cloud cover right here, a few showers getting picked up on radar as this front approaches us throughout the day. we'll go from sunshine to increasing clouds by the afternoon, we turn partly sunny across the region. and then later on this evening into the early overnight hours of saturday, we'll likely find a light isolated shower, mainly in the north bay. but this morning, the tam cam. here's a live look. you can see we have generally good visibility out there, but we'll start out with sunshine, bright conditions and then you'll notice those clouds thickening as the0 pmit's partly with temperatures in the 60s and

and union members. it comes nearly a week after 75,000 health care workers went on a three day strike over pay and staffing shortages. abc seven news is working on getting the details of what exactly has been agreed upon. but the coalition of kaiser permanente unions posted this announcement around 4:00 this morning. kaiser permanente will be paying a $50 million penalty under a settlement after the state found $150 million over five years to make improvement in that area. the investigation started last year after patients and providers complained about access and oversight of behavioral health care. complaints got worse after health care workers went on

strike last august. >> new developments with crews and its robo taxis that roam the streets of san francisco. upgrades are being made to better handle emergency situations. we've reported on several incidents where vehicles got stuck and blocked traffic. the final straw might have come when a pedestrian was struck in a hit and run. then had a cruise vehicle run her over and stop on top of her when a lot of the companies are trying to do is collect video data from their driving operations in which the av is nearby. >> one of these emergency response vehicles and specifically train an algorithms to understand, hey, there's an emergency response vehicle categorically the vehicle needs to behave differently. >> tsay cruise vehicles will also receive notifications directly from the city to help avoid emergency scenes entirely. >> the home of san francisco's historic anchor brewing company is now on the market, according

sunday, here's future weather watch those clouds increase throughout the day as you head into the overnight hours that cold front is going to cross us. so we'll track the chance of a light, isolate and shower, mainly in the north bay where we see those showers set up. they'll be very minimal in terms of their amounts of rainfall. and heading into saturday, i'm stopping the clock right here at about 10 a.m. because we do have that solar eclipse occurring and we're fighting a lot of cloud cover to see it. i think the best visibility is likely in the south bay tomorrow morning, but nonetheless, we will see a part of it through the cloud cover as the morning rolls on tomorrow. highs today, it's partly sunny. temperatures mainly in the 60s and 70s overnight tonight, it's mostly cloudy and the chance of a shower in the north bay. here's the accuweather seven day forecast showing you sun and clouds today and tomorrow much brighter and warmer on sunday and then much of next week features a warming trend with 90s returning inland by thursday. gloria, good morning, drew. >> traffic is pretty light, right now. of course, it's very early in the morning, but we want to remind you about that sig alert that is still in effect. this is on the richmond-san rafael bridge. there was that deadly crash

p.m. it's going on until monday at 5 a.m. o number seven, rudolph isley, one of the founders of the famous r&b group the isley brothers, has died at the age of 84. >> the isley brothers were one of the biggest acts in r&b and motown. their hits include shout. twist and shout and that lady with the music dating back to the 50s. >> state officials are getting resources ready ahead of the potential impact of el nino. the state says it's provided flood training to over a dozen agencies and other groups around the state. >> every region in the state is at risk of flooding. we really have to be ready to respond anywhere within the state and really depend on our local partners to have that preparedness as well. >> he also says the department of water resources will have items like sandbags ready in case local supplies are not available. and there will be several meetings with local and state partners to address potential flooding in the coming months. california was battered with heavy rain, dangerous

floods and a lot of snow. this past winter. tomorrow the bay area will be treated to an eclipse, but you do have to be up and out of the bed around 930, which if you're up now, you will be. people looking up may see the sun and moon in alignment and what's called an annular solar eclipse. abc's seven news bay reporter, south bay reporter i should say dustin dorsey has more on the phenomenon known as the ring of fire. >> when you get up saturday morning, make sure to look up our skies will be transformed during a rare annular solar eclipse, passing right by parts of the western us, including here in the bay area. >> this is an opportunity to see a very rare event and that is an occasion when the moon actually is between the earth and the sun from our point of view. and can actually get in front of the sun and block a large portion of it in this case for a couple of hours. it's known as the ring of fire for three hours saturday morning, starting around 8 a.m, the sun will begin to be blocked by the moon during its orbit.

>> its path is much closer to us here in the bay area compared to the 2017 total solar eclipse and the one coming in april 2024. that's good news for us because around 930 we'll see the moon cover about 70% of the sun. since the sun will still be visible, you can only look at it through special eclipse glasses or through pinhole cameras. these can be naturally made from using the shadows of trees or even homemade. >> it's a really simple process. all you need is a cereal box, a white piece of paper, and some aluminum foil. so once again, once you have your viewing device all done, you're going to want to put your back towards the sun, put your i in one hole and watch as the sun goes through the other hole. what you're seeing is a projection, an image of the sun and the shadow of the of the moon as it passes across the sun, as millions around the country prepare to watch the eclipse. >> cal iso is preparing for how to handle it. the three hour event will reduce output from grid scale and rooftop solar generation compared to a normal day. advanced planning and forecasting have been critical

425,000 people have been displaced in gaza out of a population of about 2.5 million. the associated press reports at least 2700 people have been killed in both israel and gaza. the crisis began saturday when the hamas terror group launched a surprise assault on israeli citizens. the us government will be operating evacuate flights today to help americans leave israel at least 27 us citizens have been killed. >> the search continues for at least 17 missing us citizens in that war torn area. one woman's family and friends reached out to abc seven news reporter j.r stone. >> the whereabouts of sharon shmunis aral are unknown. she was at the music festival in south israel celebrating her 40th birthday when she and others came under attack from hamas militants saturday morning she sent him at 907 in the morning. >> the last message, the message was they are shooting at at us and i'm hiding.

>> her brother in law, ohad ariel, spoke with us from israel wednesday night. sharon has family members and friends in the united states who originally reached out to us. uh- ohad says he immediately picked up his brother, drove an hour and a half south to the music festival on saturday morning. >> drive on the car, missiles go on top of you every few minutes you see on both sides of the roads. you see burning bushes. okay, you see people running like a festival. people you know, not all the painted like this. yeah, they will. colorful people, you see them running and every now and then you see a body. >> what is what is your belief? do you think she is still alive? it's the only thing that keeps me optimist.

strikes. we've seen over the past few months. sfusd teachers now say they have overwhelmingly authorized a strike. abc7 news reporter lena howland live in san francisco with what teachers are demanding from contract negotiations. good morning, lena . hey, good morning, kumasi. >> more than 30. more than 97% of teachers here in the san francisco unified in the san francisco unified school district voted to authorize the strike. and they're hoping to see things like teacher pay benefits, prep time and what they're calling a skyrocketing teacher vacancy rate addressed. even though it was over whelming approved, that does not mean the teachers are going to walk out. but it does mean it does now give union leaders the power to call one. after the strike was authorized, the district put out a new offer with 10,000 with a $10,000 raise for all credentialed teachers with a 4% raise for next year. the union, however, is asking for a $12,000 raise this year and a 7.5% raise

next year. one parent told us students deserve a permanent teacher in every classroom. >> nobody wants to go on strike. teachers and educators don't want it. parents and families don't want it. however, in order to avoid a strike, sfusd must support our teachers and support staff and agree to a fair contract.■ >> the union that represents 900 para educators, food service workers and custodians voted also to authorize a strike last week. they want the district to keep, to keep up with what the city pays for similar jobs, which they say is up to 25% higher. in a statement, the district said sfusd is working diligently and in good faith to reach an agreement with our labor partners. we recognize that there might be concerns and questions about potential impact of escalated labor action, given the recent attention on the

clearly see it on satellite. all this cloud cover and a little bit of rain getting picked up on radar this morning as this front advances closer to us throughout the day, we'll find increasing clouds. we'll turn partly sunny by the afternoon and late tonight to early tomorrow morning in the north bay. as that front crosses us, we'll likely find an isolated shower at times. so here's how today looks. we'll start out with mainly clear skies giving way to increasing clouds throughout your friday. by 4 p.m, it's partly sunny temperatures in the 60s and 70s. and then late tonight, after the sun goes down, there's that chance of a shower in the north bay. looking at rainfall estimates again, this is another weak front early in the season. so that means any rainfall is going to be very light and it's showing you that the north bay is really the best area, again, like it has been for the past week, to see any moisture outside of the north bay. it's just a mostly cloudy night tonight and temperatures mainly in the 50. so taking a look at the three day forecast, we'll go from sun to clouds today with that late night chance of a shower. we'll keep a chance very early in the north
