america." >> and it is a good morning america on this busy friday morning. it is great to be here with you, juju and you, gio, as well. >> we do have a lot of news to get to, including the latest on the twist for the speaker of the house. you see capitol hill right there. >> so much turmoil still. but we begin with breaking news overnight in israel, in the war zone. u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin arrived in israel early this morning to meet with prime minister netanyahu and discuss military aid. >> take a live look at gaza right now. israel is urging the evacuation of more than 1 million people in northern gaza, an indication the military may be preparing for a ground invasion. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell starts us off in jerusalem. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, rebecca. from damascus gate which is just outside the old city of jerusalem. i have been here many times. i have to say, it is eerily calm. there is a really tense atmosphere here.

the situation in gaza is not calm. a seventh day of continuous bombing as many residents now are being warned by the israeli defense forces to leave their homes. this morning as the bombing of gaza continues israel calling on hundreds of thousands of people to leave their homes amid fears of an imminent land operation. israel's saying people should move from north gaza for their own protection, but hamas telling residents they should stay where they are. overnight the u.n. warning that moving so many people could have, quote, devastating humanitarian consequences. its own teams in gaza also affected by the advice as a convoy of u.n. vehicles drive south. now the military wing of hamas claiming that 13 of the hostages were killed in overnight bombing. vast areas in gaza already reduced to rubble. the death toll climbing remorsefully.

more than 1500 palestinians killed since saturday's attack in israel, many more wounded. 300,000 palestinians have been forced from their homes so far. this little girl seen crying in a stranger's arms. humanitarian groups say hospitals are overwhelmed and on the brink of collapse. today worshippers attending midday prayers in jerusalem amid calls by hamas for a day of rage. this is one of the most holy sites in islam. police aren't allowing anyone in under the age of 50. there's a lot of anger. there's a lot of tension. and there's a lot of fear. now israeli forces are gathering at the border of gaza for a possible ground assault, israel retaliating for last saturday's massacre of israeli civilians that killed more than 1,300 people, including at least 27 americans. as the fighting intensifies there are growing fears that the war could spread.

you in jerusalem is one of the h holiest sites in the world. with hamas calling for that day of rage. what are you seeing? what is the mood on the ground there? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. they are calling for a day of rage. not just here in israel or in the palestinian territory, but also around the world, a day of action. now, i have to say it's very very quiet here unusually quiet. we spoke to someone at a mosque, someone on our team did. they say normally they expect something like 4,000 worshippers to gather in the morning in the early prayers but there are only just a few hundred who gathered. all the shops are closed. we're hearing there may well have been protests in some areas but other than that, here, at least, people are afraid. people are afraid about the israeli response. people are genuinely angry about what's happened, but worried that if they protest, the reaction could be stronger. one last thing. the united nations just issuing a warning, saying the situation

in gaza is horrendous and warning this order to push people from their homes will push gaza into the abyss. rebecca? >> just an unspeakably difficult week and great, great challenges ahead. ian, thank you so much for your reporting on the ground there for us all week long. please stay safe. gio? >> all right, rebecca. you talked about that day of rage. back here at home, police are bracing for potential violence, monitoring the situation very very closely. will carr is in los angeles with more. good morning, will. >> good morning. abc news confirmed law enfo enforcement agencies across the country including here in los angeles are on high alert. l.a.p.d. is increasing patrols in jewish and muslim communities. the sheriffs department said it is adding detectives to its detective division and increasing its presence in strategic locations across the county. it comes after hamas leaders have called for a day of rage,

sparking concern over violence. in new york city, all officers have been called in including those on vacation. they are blanketing the city for the potential of violence. some synagogues are making their services virtual today. the fbi said it is aware of the call of action by hamas and is working with state and local law enforcement. here in beverly hills, the police is increasing its presence, asking everyone in the city to remain vigilant and to report anything they may see throughout the course of the day. gio? >> thank you very much. >> juju? >> we're going to turn to the u.s. blocking iran from accessing billions of dollars in funds that were released as part of a deal to free american prisoners. as iran comes under scrutiny for its possible role in helping hamas. our chief white house correspondent mary bruce has more. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, juju. the u.s. and qatar have agreed for now to prevent iran from

accessing $6 billion in oil revenues. the deputy treasury secretary telling lawmakers this money isn't going anywhere anytime soon. now this money, you'll recall, was freed up as part of that prisoner swap between the u.s. and iran last month. this is money that is intended only for humanitarian purposes. and the u.s. has strict oversight over how this is spent. the administration faced a lot of blow back for this. tehran so far has not withdrawn any of this money yet, but iran is facing new scrutiny for its role in supporting hamas, even though so far there's no intelligence to show that iran actually played any kind of direct role in this attack. now, i have pressed the white house on this. they are refusing to go into specifics, but they do say that iran is complicit in this because we know they fund, train and arm hamas. rebecca? >> some huge questions with major implications there. mary bruce, thank you very much for your reporting. we turn now to the race for house speaker. in a state of chaos this morning.

steve scalise, who had been the leading contender, stepping aside in the face of opposition by gop hard liners. our senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is on the hill tracking it all. a very busy night. rachel, good morning. >> reporter: rebecca, good morning. this is a sudden turn in what has become an unprecedented fight for speaker of the house. the chamber has been at a stand still for ten days. republican the conference nominated now says he's out. this morning whiplash on capitol hill. congressman steve scalise dropping out of the race for speaker just one day after being nominated. >> our conference still has to come together. it is not there. >> reporter: scalise was scrambling to secure the votes, meeting with republicans behind closed doors for hours. but in the end, it wasn't enough. >> i said i'm not going to be part of it. >> reporter: scalise could only afford to lose four republicans. at least 15 were against him. >> i can count votes. the votes aren't there for steve. >> reporter: all of this throwing the house into even more chaos and uncertainty.

>> it's getting tiresome. we have to lead. >> reporter: when does the party need to unite? >> yesterday, yesterday. >> reporter: it's been ten days since a group of rebel republicans turned against kevin mcmccarthy, paralyzing the chamber. what does it say about the party that it's so fractured? >> it's not fractured. >> you can't even elect a speaker. >> 4% of the conference. it's 4% of the conference. >> reporter: now there are serious questions about whether any republican can unite the party. this morning all eyes on jim jordan, who challenged scalise for the nomination. if scalise can't do it why will jordan be able to do? >> he unites the factions of the party who weren't behind scalise. >> reporter: it's unclear if jordan can sway moderates, frustrated with how this went down. do you have major concerns with jordan as candidate for speaker? >> no. we are rewarding bad behavior. that's what i don't like. >> reporter: leaving the capitol overnight, jordan

confident the party will eventually come together. >> i think we'll get there. >> reporter: sources tell me that congressman jim jordan has already started calling members asking for their support. but this has turned into a major standoff between different wings of the party. that crisis in israel is unfolding and the deadline to fund the government is just 35 days away, gio. >> the clock is ticking. we are back to square one. rachel, thank you very much. we are going to turn now to senator bob menendez. federal prosecutors filed new charges against him and his wife, accusing the new jersey democrat of conspireing to act as an agent of egypt. aaron katersky is here with the latest developments. >> reporter: bob menendez has been accused of taking gold bars and cold cash. now the u.s. senator is accused of acting more like a lobbyist for a foreign government. senator, can we have a few words with you, sir? bob menendez is facing new charges, accusing the new jersey democrat of plotting with his

wife and an associate to make the senator an agent of egypt while he was chairman of the foreign relations committee. prosecutors say it's the first time a sitting member of congress has ever been charged with conspiracy for a public official to act as a foreign agent. the new indictment showing menendez and his wife hosting one egyptian official in his senate office and dining with another at a washington, d.c. steak house. at that dinner, nadine menendez allegedly asking, what else can the love of my life do for you? federal prosecutors say senator menendez lifted a block on u.s. military aid to egypt, texting his wife, tell will i am going to sign off this sale to egypt today, 10,000 rounds tank ammunition. in exchange, prosecutors say they were paid bribes and gold bars, a new mercedes and wads of cash, some found stuffed inside the senator's jacket. prosecutors want to seize all of it, plus the senator's home in new jersey. >> i want to make a couple of things very clear. first, my office remains firmly committed to rooting out public corruption without fear or favor

mcclain was not armed, dying because of what appears to be a tragic misunderstanding. warning, what you are about to see is not graphic but it is emotionally wrenching. this morning a colorado police officer guilty of illegally killing elijah mcclain, a young man whose death shocked the nation. >> we, the jury, find the defendant guilty of criminal homicide. >> reporter: mcclain's mother raising her fist, telling reporters she's not satisfied. >> this is the united states of america. this is the divided states of america. that's what happened. >> reporter: mcclain's mom clearly frustrated that he faces less than a decade in prison, and that another officer was acquitted in the killing of her son who, by all accounts, was a gentle person who loved to play the violin and whose death raised serious questions about race and policing. the end of his life all caught on chilling body camera footage. his death a tragic misunderstanding. it was august 2019 and mcclain,

signed on to a controversial statement. this morning as protests erupt on college campuses across the country over the escalating hamas israeli war in the middle east, tensions mounting between some student protesters and their potential employers. harvard finding itself in the middle of contentious conversation after its palestine solidarity groups released a statement signed by more than 30 student groups in the wake of the hamas terrorist attacks saying they held the israeli regime entirely responsible for all the unfolding violence for the last two decades, millions of palestinians in gaza have been forced to live in an open air prison. ceo's from major corporations like sweet green and fabfitfun calling for the names of the students within those groups to be released. >> what we wanted to do was try to understand who actually is signing on to that statement and if people are actually signing on to that statement, we would want to make sure we are not hiring those individuals. >> reporter: billionaire bill ackman took to x to share his

views writing, i have been asked by a number of ceo's if harvard would release a list of the members of each of the harvard organizations that have issued the letter to ensure that none of us inadvertently hire any of its members. the backlash also raising safety concerns. this truck going around harvard's campus naming people who were allegedly part of the group that signed the statement. i spoke with several palestinian students who asked that we not show their faces out of fear for their safety. >> we have friends who had their names on the lists who have had their work places contacted. we had friends who received death threats. >> reporter: they say they are scared to mourn in public. >> i just got a message from my grandmother letting me know ten members of our family have been killed. imagine feeling like the place that you're from is going to get wiped off the map? >> reporter: some of the groups that signed the letter now retracting their support and some students resigning from their positions. harvard's president later

to keep up with rising prices for everyday goods like groceries or gas. but because inflation has been cooling, that means the 3% increase next year is a lot lower than the historically high nearly 9% raise this year and 6% bump in 2022. the government will start notifying recipients about their updated payment amounts by mail in december. if you want to find that out sooner, go to ssa.gov. rebecca? >> updates by mail or ssa.gov. thank you very much. we turn to a new study finding young and middle aged women are being diagnosed with lung cancer at higher rates than men in the same age group. these results reverse the trend we've seen in the past, and our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here to break it all down. nice to see you, dr. jen. what are these results telling us? >> big picture here, the leading cause of cancer death in the united states, not breast, not colon, not pancreatic. it's lung cancer. traditionally more common for men than women.

this latest study reverses that. they were looking at age and sex. they found younger women under 50 and middle age women 50-55 are seeing a slight uptick. that is something they are paying attention to. >> what are the signs that we need to pay attention to? >> look, when you talk about signs and symptoms of lung cancer, there are some that need to be front of mind because this is such a deadly cancer. any cough lasting longer than six weeks. any unexplained weight loss, blood in your cough, lingers shortness of breath or hoarsness, you want to get that checked out. >> what about screening? >> we don't know the cause. observation is the first step. in terms of screening, patients and doctors alike often times do not know this. there are screening recommendations for adults 50-80 who have a 20 pack year smoking history. that's not 20 packs a year.

more of them are turning to these adjustable rate mortgages or arms as they're called. that's because the average five year adjustable rate actually fell to 6.3%. so it's lower. an arm actually allows you to pay less monthly but they are riskier because after those five years your rates can go up. >> it's a really important point. lot of people took these on during the mortgage crisis, during the financial crisis and they learned the hard way that those rates can go up. they can go up even higher. >> there's always a catch here. you've been educating us about this for years. after five years your monthly payments could go up if the current market rate is higher than what you can pay. if you are lucky your rate could go down and your monthly could go down and you could make less on those payments. but there is usually a cap on how much the rate can go up but that could still mean you are substantially paying more than you were paying in the beginning. >> yeah. it's a really important point and you want to have that conversation up front with your

mortgage lender. tell us about what else you recommend. >> all of this is highly dependent on your situation. if you are buying a place and you don't think you will live there more than five years, one of these arms may be a good situation for you. if you end up staying you could try to refinance. keep in mind there is no guarantee you will get a good rate. if you are planning to stay in your home, one of those traditional mortgages may be a safer bet. >> depends on what you want. have those conversations, think about it up front. great information as always. thank you. okay. juju? >> now to our series together in pink as we mark national metastatic breast cancer awareness day. with new targeted treatments, some patients with the diagnosis can thrive for years. robin has a story of one of those survivors. >> reporter: sally joy is redefining what it means to live and thrive with metastatic breast cancer. >> this is something i did everything to avoid.

it's also something that i genuinely believe is meant to be my path. >> reporter: first diagnosed at age 40, her cancer recurring, two years later, spreading to her hip. >> i have grown up in a world where we are told if you are vigilant, you will catch it early. and if you catch it early, you will be cured. and i did all of that. you can do all of the right things and still end up with a stage iv cancer. that was really eye-opening to me. >> reporter: nearly 30% of women diagnosed with early stage breast cancer develop metastatic disease, when cancer is found in another part of the body, months or years after the initial treatment. but there is hope. >> it wasn't long ago that metastatic cancer meant people would live months or years.

now what we're finding r because treatments are more tolerable and targeted, people are living for decades with metastatic disease. >> reporter: today at 48, doctors have told sally there is no evidence of disease. and she is responding well to her first line of defense treatment over five years later. >> i am being told i will never hear the words cured. i like to believe science can change that. but regardless of what happens from a research perspective, i'm thriving right now. not only i'm thriving with cancer, but also i would say thriving in part because of this cancer journey i have been on. >> reporter: sally, finding purpose and meaning beyond the disease. even changing careers, leaving her 9 to 5 to become a corporate well-being expert. >> since we don't question the good luck in our lives, i don't believe we should question the bad luck either. >> reporter: sally also says she's leaned into gratitude
