morning to you. it's saturday, october 14th. i'm zach fuentes. we're going to get to that developing news soon. but first, meteorologist lisa arjun is here. good morning to you, lisa. good morning, zach. >> we're looking at a fall like situation here this morning with a cold front on the way. not really bringing much with the rainfall, but we did have a little on top of mt. tam and far northern sonoma county. you can see up by clear lake there. but otherwise, it's all about the cloud cover. there is an empty pier, 39, 60 downtown, 63 in oakland, 61 in san jose. another view of a cloudy san francisco from our sutro tower camera. upper 50s in the north bay. very mild out there. low 60s napa and fairfield. we'll be about 70 today. later on. but notice maybe a sprinkle this morning and then as we get towards noontime 60s to low 70s inland mid to upper 70s late part of the day and it'll be sunnier east and south, but we'll hold on to the cloud cover more so in the north bay talking about a warmup. we'll show it to you for

tomorrow coming up. zach. >> lisa, thank you. new overnight, israel's military announced a six hour window for over a million people to safely evacuate out of northern gaza today. that window closed and a decision on a ground offensive has not been announced. but israel has been massing troops along the gaza border. we also know israeli troops entered gaza friday, but left after conducting a raid on hamas. so this does not appear to be the start of a ground invasion. people are scrambling to get out of gaza after the israeli military dropped leaflets on friday warning them to leave. but hamas has reportedly been telling palestinians to stay home. the total number of deaths since fighting erupted last weekend is now more than 3500. israel says it has also killed around 1500 hamas militants. abc news reporter derek dennis has more on the rush to get americans out of harm's way. explodes >> dozens hurt in gaza early saturday morning as israeli strikes continue one week after the terror attack in israel by hamas militants. israel friday

telling gazans to evacuate. leaflets dropped from the sky with a warning to move away from the border. many people carrying whatever they could hold and heading out on foot. 21 year old college student afaf najjar and her family started driving south , a journey she describes as horrifying. >> the moment we arrive to canyons, we realized that airstrikes were happening in canyons as well. very heavy ones. just just a couple of minutes ago, there was one that shook the entire house, hamas urging gazans not to heed the evacuation orders. >> the white house accusing them of using innocent civilians as human shields. abc's ian pannell in israel, it feels we're now on the eve of a significant military movement by the israelis into gaza. >> the men, the munitions are tanks are all into place and now they're just waiting for the order if it comes to move across that border. >> more than 3000 people in both israel and gaza have been killed since last week's terror attack,

including americans. friday, president biden spoke with the families of 14 americans who are missing. some believed to be hostages held by hamas in gaza. >> they're going through agony, not knowing what the status of their sons, daughters, husbands, wives, children are. you know, it's gut wrenching. i assured them my personal commitment to do everything possible, everything possible to return every missing american to their families. >> according to the idf, israeli special forces have already carried out raids inside gaza trying to locate hostages. but their presence not part of a possible ground offensive. derek dennis, abc news, new york. >> and here at home, we're seeing multiple rallies over the war in israel. there were demonstrations supporting israel as well as palestine. abc seven news reporter ryan curry shows us the messages coming from these rallies and how one synagogue dedicated its shabbat service to israelis overseas as demonstrations across san francisco friday at the steps of city hall, protesters supporting

israel and denouncing the actions by hamas bring them home. >> realizing that something like that can happen, it just it's inhumane. it's terrible. >> and in front of the israeli consulate, supporters of palestine pray three palestine. >> there is a country called palestine where jewish and muslims and everybody should be able to live together. >> and then in the evening, shabbat at keneseth, israel, chabad is taking on a different meaning. rabbi moshe langer says this one is focused on praying for jewish people in israel. we have to show terrorism and evil that they're not going to stop us, they're not going to stop us from prayer. >> they're not going to stop us from our day to day life. >> friday night service carries a significant importance in light of everything that is going on. the rabbi says. they hope that through their community and through their faith, they can call for the violence to stop. >> you fight hate with light, with love, unbounded love. and

that is really what is going to bring the redemption to the world light a source of energy for rabbi langer's congregation. >> many there lighting candles to show resilience when we spread light positive light, that is what is going to fight darkness in san francisco. ryan curry, abc seven news. >> and new this morning, the louvre museum in paris is shutting its doors today after receiving a written threat. alarms rang early saturday where staff and visitors were evacuated from the facility. museum officials say it was linked to the government's decision to put france on high alert after a fatal school stabbing and that stabbing. french authorities say a student of islamic radicalization killed a teacher and wounded three others before being arrested, knowing that the museum was harmed. all right. so the israeli israel-hamas war, it's an ongoing situation, will continue to keep you updated on what's happening there in israel and here at home. we're bringing

you the latest local connections on tv and online. our website is abc7 news.com and you can download the abc seven bay area app on your phone to get breaking news alerts and live stream updates on the peninsula. a surfer survived a suspected shark attack at linda mar beach in pacifica. he was reportedly knocked off his board and dragged into the water. we do have a picture of the injury to his leg, but we're blurring it out for you this morning. the man did not see what bit him, but says there's a clear shark bite mark. he was eventually taken to the hospital. and right now, warning signs are posted at linda mar beach telling people that there was a shark in the area within the last 48 hours in the south bay, police arrested a mother and daughter who are owners of a san jose daycare facility. two girls, two girls died when they drowned in a backyard pool at that home. daycare a two year old boy was also found in the pool. he survived. investigators say the children were left unattended in an outdoor play area. they then walked through a pool gate which was propped open on abc seven

news reporter lauren martinez asked a legal expert to evaluate the case. >> the owners of a san jose home daycare where two toddlers drowned are facing felony child endangerment charges. the santa clara county district attorney's office says criminal negligence led to the fatal drownings of two one year old girls in the backyard pool. >> many times, prosecutors don't want to compound a tragedy like this by filing criminal charges. but this is very different than the backyard accident that happens with a drowning. what you have here is the highest duty of care to these children because they were at a daycare. the da's office says a mother and her adult daughter owned happy, happy daycare. >> detectives outlined a timeline of events on sunday, october 1st. an employee called out of work on monday. the daughter was the only caretaker since her mother was at another daycare. according to the investigator, when the mother's husband normally waters plants

by the pool, it stated, quote, while doing so, he propped open the pool gate with a clothes hanging rack. he failed to close the gate after watering the plants. the allegation say while the daughter was making breakfast that she let the girls and a two year old boy into the rear patio play area. unsuper revised and out of her side and with access to the open gate, at least five minutes later is when she discovered the boy unconscious in the pool and then called for help for the girls. >> so it's not just one violation, but a number of problems at the daycare that compounded this tragedy. and i think that will be key. it's possible the da's office could look at filing homicide charges. >> pool safety advocates say better state regulations are needed. >> the like science requirements for daycare or home daycare operations with pools or open water are nominal at best. parents should take a really

good, hard, long look at what happened here because, again, this is not just about the daycare operators. this is about a system that enables these daycare operators to exist in the first place. >> the two women are due in court in december in san jose. lauren martinez, abc seven news. in pinole some residents did not have water service friday after a water main break caused this large sinkhole. >> officials blocked off the area near buxton road which also saw some flooding. the fire department in east bay mud crews responded. and now an update for you this morning. the sinkhole is now fixed and water service was restored around 430 this morning. and in oakland, the city is one step closer to getting a new police chief. the time frame for applicants to submit their application is now over. that's according to the east bay times. the police commission hired an outside firm to lead the search for a new chief after the firing of former chief leronne armstrong, a

publicized list of candidates included armstrong, whose name along with six other candidates, is new developments. a woman accused of killing an elite cycling from san francisco tried to escape this week. caitlin armstrong is accused of shooting and killing mariah wilson in her austin home. then leaving to costa rica in 2022. and this week, authorities say armstrong ran from corrections officers when leaving a doctor's appointment on wednesday. she was caught shortly after. armstrong's trial is scheduled for later this month. and right now, a stretch of highway 101 is shut down for the entire weekend. this affects only the northbound lanes of 101 between the whipple avenue and britton avenue, exits between redwood city and san carlos. that closure is going to last until monday at 5:00 in the morning, the weekend closure will allow caltrans to finish replacing the cordilleras creek bridge. and three weeks, that's how long repairs of the richmond-san rafael bridge toll plazas, canopy and safety components will take the repairs, follow a big rig crash and fire monday night. that crash killed a truck

area qualcomm in san francisco based flexport plan to lay off hundreds of workers, according to the sf chronicle. qualcomm will cut about two and one half percent of its more than 50,000 employees. about 194 workers based in santa clara will be affected. a notice sent to the state says the cuts will begin in december. this is the company's second round of cuts. this year. in may, they laid off more than 80 people in the south bay and software startup flexport announced it would also lay off about 20% of its workforce. that's nearly 700 of their reported 3500 employees. it's unclear how many local positions would be affected by the layoffs as employees have reached a tentative agreement with kaiser permanente. after seven months of negotiation and a three day strike. the deal includes higher wages with a 21% pay increase over the next four years. the minimum wage is set at $25 in california, with $23 in other states. there's a

commitment to on the job training so employees can advance their careers. people under this tentative agreement can rightfully expect to make real economic progress in real terms, which is really important right now. >> this new contract will actually help us continue to have some of the best employees in health care acting us secretary of labor julie su is at the bargaining table. >> the unions represent 85,000 workers. they're going to vote on whether to ratify the contract contract next week. and new this morning, an incentive to slow down speeding drivers. governor gavin newsom signed a bill into law which will allow the use of speed cameras. so this means drivers going at least 11mph over the speed limit will be issued. automated speeding tickets, bay area cities, including san francisco, oakland and san jose will be part of the pilot programs. oakland mayor shengtao released a statement supporting the move. she says in part quote, i am grateful the state legislature and the governor recognize the value of this tool in our

efforts to make oakland a safer place to walk, roll and ride in. also signed into law the nation's first statewide minimum wage of $25 an hour for all health care workers. the action comes after years of lobbying and protesting by labor unions. the wage increase will go into effect over the next decade. uc berkeley labor center says about 455,000 workers will benefit from the increase. three out of four are women and 76% are workers of color. happening today, pumpkin festival returns to half moon bay. people can enjoy a day filled with food, drinks and of course, lots of pumpkins. a 2,749 pound pumpkin is going to be this year's main attraction that was harvested from minnesota. and it set a new world record with its massive size. the chp also says anyone attending the festival can expect traffic along highway 92. so they're encouraging people to drive safely. >> it's a great time. it's a it's a great festival. you know, alcohol is going to be served. so we'll just be out there making sure everyone is

celebrating responsibly and having a good time. >> the festival starts at 9 a.m. and lasts until 5 p.m. officials suggest people get there early to avoid heavy traffic delays. so the weather not necessarily serving us for the eclipse today here in the bay area, but hopefully, lisa, maybe for the people going to the pumpkin festival on the coast, it will. >> yeah, that's true. you know, the light is going to get a little funny about an hour from now when we get into peak darkness. yes. even with the cloud cover, some of you may notice that. but certainly the cold front messing things up for us. timing is everything, right? and looking at a good deal of cloud cover and even a few sprinkles up in the north bay. so here's live doppler seven and you notice much of northern california obscured there, the san joaquin valley, parts of the central coast. much better viewing. and as we get in closer , a couple of raindrops far to the north. mount saint helena is where our sweep is. and this is a look from our east bay hills camera, where you can see how gray it is out there. so with all the cloud cover overnight, certainly mild, 60 degrees

downtown, 63 in oakland with 59 in mountain view, 61. san jose, palo alto 57, 60 one half moon bay and the raindrops at about 2300ft. mount tam temperatures just in the low 50s here, 59. santa rosa, 61in novato 63 napa and fairfield. and so when we do get a little sun this afternoon, temperatures are going to come up, but it'll be mainly in the east bay and south bay north bay. a few peeks here and there, 57 in livermore and kind of a neat view isn't this of san jose with some cloud cover and you can see some clear spots there so the lights getting kind of funky the way it's lit out there in the next hour or so due to that eclipse, make sure you have those goggles or those special glasses if you're checking it out. sprinkles in the north bay, clouds thinning out in the afternoon, particularly east and south, and then warmer days arriving tuesday through friday. we're talking well above average. again, here's what's going to happen. happening now now is obscuring the sun. the

moon here at 920, 77, maximum eclipse and it ends at 1042. so unfortunately, not seeing a whole lot of it. but some of you may certainly notice a change out there as we go through the morning hours, getting into partly cloudy conditions throughout the later afternoon, the clouds come back for your sunday morning, sunday afternoon . soon we are warmer and we're going to see some sunshine as well. temperatures will be on the other side of 80 degrees for sunday, then back to a few degrees cooler as a cold front gets close here by mid day on monday, 3:00. but really missing us, perhaps parts of sonoma and santa rosa picking up a few raindrop pops. but after that, we're going to warm up considerably. this is sunday day, a warmer day, low 80s inland, mid 70s over in oakland and then we drop off a few degrees for monday with more cloud cover and then by tuesday we're going to begin that warming trend with with high pressure building in for the rest of the week. 72 in oakland, 70 in napa, 75. in fremont, san

on the campus of the university of washington, rece davis and kirk herbstreit great tripleheader on abc. starting with syracuse and florida state. florida state gets big leads, lets teams back in it, and then finds ways to finish games. >> that's a great point and it's fair. i think if florida state is trying to go into this territory of being a legitimate playoff contender, these are the weeks. there's not a lot of fanfare, not a lot of excitement. you've got to be careful. you've got to show maturity and being able to handle becoming that hunted team. to me, i'm i'm in on florida state, but i really learn as much about them in a week like this where they're expected to win big. we're going to learn a lot about oregon and washington, both prolific offenses, a game you'll call on abc. >> yeah, fired up for this one. >> it's 330 on abc. and again, two of the better quarterbacks right now. the way they're executing in the country, this is a very different game as far as what's at stake and the defense is, with all due respect to their opponents, they have neither offense has seen what they'll see this saturday. and then in prime time miami and north carolina, canes coming off one of the most embarrassing

for the most part, wasting our time that most of the prices we saw over and over again, no matter which website we went to, whether we called the hotel desk directly, whether we visited the hotel's website, did a quick check this morning looking to book a room at the fairmont in san francisco for two days later this month at the hotel's website. >> the price. was $371.50 a night. a travel ocity $0.50 more at $372 and a kayak which promises to check hundreds of sites. the price was the same $372. >> most of those websites are owned by one of two companies. one is expedia, the other is booking holdings. and they, together with hotels, have come up with agreements that essentially say they're all going to charge the same prices for the same stays across all the different booking platforms as yesterday i was talking with tourists visiting san francisco. >> so when i ran into a dallas man in the hotel business, he

confirms those arrangements. they said there was no difference in prices anymore, which is absolutely correct. why is that? because as the brands dictate that to us, we can't have different price points to different websites. now there are a handful of ways to get a discount. one is to book a nonrefundable hotel room a bit risky, but there are discounts of around 10. you can sign up for a loyalty program at a hotel, which sometimes can get you a 10% discount. costco travel has discounted rooms, but it is fairly limited checkbooks. brasler says the best prices are the mystery deals found on priceline and hotwire, where you don't know the exact hotel until after you have booked and paid. >> the reason i think these these deals are worth looking at is that it was the only way we significantly cut our costs on average, we found that booking one of these mystery deals saved us about 25 to 30% off. most our

news. good morning to you. >> i'm zach fuentes. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you. good morning, zach. >> we are pretty cloudy out there. a few raindrops on top of mount tam. but what a dramatic view from our oakland airport. look at the cloud cover here. and the lighting there. so interesting, isn't it? peak darkness at 920 with the eclipse. it is 61 degrees in san francisco, 63 in oakland with low 60s in san jose and half

moon bay. and here's a look at some sunshine not only in san jose, the tri valley. you could see a little bit of that as well as we're partly cloudy there, 59, santa rosa, 61 in nevada, 63 by the delta, very mild due to all the cloud cover. as much as 17 degrees warmer where we have a few raindrops in santa rosa, nine degrees warmer. san carlos. so there is the mostly cloudy sky. 9:00 it is gray. but then by 12 1:00, we're breaking out into sun east bay, south bay. even the north bay may get a few peeks of sun. upper 70s inland low 70s around the bay shore and even the pumpkin festival will brighten up throughout the afternoon. we'll have some clouds visit us again tonight. a warmer sunday, another cold front on monday and a big warm up for the week ahead. zach, lisa, thank you. >> developing news, israel's military gave people in northern gaza a six hour window to safely evacuate to the southern part of gaza. that window closed. that ended at 4 p.m. local time,

which was about two hours ago. and right now, thousands of people are rushing to safely get out of northern gaza. but the israeli military says hamas is trying to stop people from evacuating. you know, we'll have to assess the situation on the ground, see how many civilians are left in the area, understand how many of them have been blocked by hamas from actually evacuating. >> and we've seen active efforts by hamas to block these people from leaving, which i think is appalling at a whole a whole new level. and once we'll see that the situation will be permissible for significant combat operations, then they will commence. >> the advisory to evacuate comes amid signs israel is set to ramp up its offensive against hamas. the total number of deaths since fighting erupted last weekend is now more than 3500. israel says it has also killed around 1500 hamas militants. as of this morning, 27 americans have been killed and 14 are missing. and as our nation watches the situation escalate abroad, leaders across

the us are ramping up security in their cities. cnn news reporter emily schmidt tells us how other major cities are staying prepared. >> in new york city friday, those at pro-israel rallies speaking their message. you support terror. >> pro palestinian rally goers doing the same. >> israel you can hide across the city, there were signs of worry. other expressions could prove more violent. >> while there is no credible threat and everybody is urging new yorkers to go about their business, we are very prepared and very much deployed. >> new york city visibly upped its security presence in its transit systems and outside of places of worship. >> nobody should have to worry about going to school or work or recreation for their own safety because of anti semitic violence in washington, extra security surrounds the us capital. >> a jewish day school in nearby rockville, maryland, canceled classes friday after the israeli

developing news from washington house republicans voting behind closed doors to nominate representative jim jordan as speaker. but it's already clear he doesn't have enough support in his own party to win election. abc news reporter and wynn has the latest on this morning. >> house republicans still in disarray as they fumbled to elect a new speaker. >> we've allowed emotion to get in the way of logic. rep >> jim jordan of ohio became the second republican nominated this week to replace ousted kevin mccarthy as speaker of the house in a secret ballot among the gop conference, jordan defeating a dark horse candidate, representative austin scott of georgia, the conservative firebrand, gaining more votes. this time than when he faced and lost to representative steve scalise tuesday. but the question remains whether jordan can unite the party. i think i can unite the conference in another vote over how many members would actually support the hard line republican on the

they're struggling to understand why a study by the american cancer society found women between 35 to 54 were diagnosed at a higher rate of men the same age over a 20 year period. experts say there's a common perception that lung cancer happens only in older men who have smoked for decades. a lack of understanding about the gender trend is helping fuel a push for more funding to launch more studies. and in the north bay, a nonprofit is finding success renting shared homes to people who were once unhoused and highlighting solutions to

parts of the bay area. you'll be able to see it. if you look up at the sky around 930 this morning, you'll see about 70% of the sun covered by the moon. this is also known as the ring of fire. and experts, they recommend you look through special eclipse glasses or by using the shade from trees. the eclipse started at the top of the hour when the moon blocked the sun during its orbit. it's expected to last three hours. and we want to take you now to a live feed of that ring of fire eclipse. many places around the nation are posting what they can see from their cameras. i believe this shot is from roswell, new mexico, right now. so we're going to continue to follow this view because there's not too much for us to see here in the bay area. as lisa's been telling us, this morning. but we'll have our live stream up, our 24 hour, 24 over seven live stream show will be streaming a live feed of the eclipse. kind of like what you're seeing right now. and lisa, i think it's really neat seeing this in whatever capacity we can see it in because weather's not really showing up for us here in the bay area to be able to experience it the way others are getting to. it's so true.

>> south san jose, inland valley, san joaquin valley, the best viewing in lubbock, texas. and then another 1 in 2023 were dallas, texas will get the best view of a total lunar eclipse. so right now it is underway. 920 maximum eclipse. so some areas might be a little bit darker out there. you will be able to notice that. and then it ends at 1042. such a bummer with all the cloud cover here, but we are all looking at the raindrops. that's what we're somewhat interested in, even though it's a very, very weak system. it is kind of washing out overhead and live doppler seven, picking up on just a few rain showers there. mt. tam, that's where we're watching instead. and since we can't see the eclipse, you can see how drippy it is where temperatures have been quite mild overnight with 61 san francisco and san jose, half moon bay, 61, 63 in oakland. temperatures in palo alto, upper 50s and some sunshine here in san jose. pretty view where numbers in the north bay upper 50s santa rosa had a few raindrops a few showers. there
