objective given the civilian population, which i know you've already talked about. but going into an area like that, a very, very densely populated area, i've been there before myself and seen it up close, it is nearly impossible to avoid civilians, especially as they try to evacuate. so that is something that the whole world is truly watching. >> one of the many concerns in all this, we know the u.s. is sending a second aircraft carrier to the region. you're speaking with white house national security adviser jake sullivan on your show later today. what is the role the u.s. is expected to play in this war effort? >> reporter: i think you know that antony blinken, the secretary of state, has been around the middle east all week, talking to diplomats around here and other foreign ministers and other secretaries of state, trying to get them to listen to the u.s., saying, can you help with this evacuation, can you take some of these refugees.

getting any hostages out who are being held by hamas. then the big worry on getting aid in. this is tricky diplomacy. the white house does not want to look like it is telling israel what to do, but also they very much acknowledge the dire situation that innocent people of gaza are facing right now. the reality is u.s. support for israel will be tested if a ground invasion and air strikes continue to harm and displace civilians in gaza. secretary of state blinken is still on his extensive trip in the region. overnight, he met with the saudi crown prince, bin salam. and yesterday, we learned that the president not only spoke with prime minister netanyahu again at the white house, but he also talked for the first time since this conflict broke out with the president of the palestinian authority, mahmoud abbas. we are told the two men talked about how to keep the violence from spreading to the west bank,

7:47 am
all the talk is around brock purdy, mr. irrelevant, brock, not whit. is he the guy to beat? >> i think the 49ers are the team to beat. i think right now as you look at the season, they are the best team in the national football league. with that being said, they're playing a tough cleveland brown defense. the cleveland browns are ranked first in defense. people don't realize that. but the problem with cleveland facing san francisco, deshaun watson is not going to play. i look for this to be a tight game at the end. you see that guy killing mccaffrey, that will be the difference. san francisco should win this game. you mentioned purdy. no interceptions. you know, he's flawless right now. this is a good team. they understand it. the weather will play a factor in this game, but i think the 49ers win. >> purdy looking pretty. that brings us to monday night's game, dem boys, the cowboys facing the chargers. you say this game as playoff implications.
7:48 am
you're calling it a get-right game for the cowboys. what do they have to do differently? >> they have to seize the moment. both teams mirror each other. they both have very talented players on both sides of the ball. they seem to always be in playoff contention. the chargers are on a 2-2 winning streak. the cowboys come off a bad beatdown by san francisco. if you're asking me to pick, you're asking a former philadelphia eagle to pick a cowboy team? just can't do it. i'll go with the chargers. i'll go with the chargers! sorry. sorry, cowboys fans! i can't do it! >> you've been saying the cowboys have to play well on first down. the other team is doing well on first down. >> it's important, because when you think about it, if you think about the 49ers, why the 49ers are so good, they're averaging seven yards on first down. they're never in third and longs. first down is important in the national football league because you want to stay ahead of the chains.
7:49 am
if you get behind the chains, it becomes a problem, especially for the cowboys on third down, because now all of a sudden dak has to sit in the pocket, hold the football. that's a problem. so, i think first down for both teams will be critical. >> all right. but you're going for the 49ers. herm, look, if we had to find somebody who knows more about football than me, you are the only person to do it. thank you for being with us. >> my pleasure. >> catch the game monday night at 8:15 eastern on both abc and espn. there's challenges,
