rowing inside of a pumpkin >> from abc news in new york. this is america this morning. >> good monday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you. i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with israel. apparently on the verge of launching a ground invasion of gaza with troops and tanks at the border. >> the humanitarian crisis for the 2 million people in gaza is worsened with no power, little food and water and hospitals in crisis. airstrikes have been relentless. israel claims that this attack took out a key leader of hamas, the terror group responsible for that barbaric attack on israeli border villages that triggered this new war. the combined death toll on both sides is now more than 4000 people, including 30 americans. >> there is new hope today for some people who are trapped in gaza. egypt has offered to briefly open a border crossing for people and supplies. >> but iran is now warning of a wider region. escalation of this conflict if israel enters gaza.

this morning, the new war in the middle east on the verge of a major escalation, threatening to explode into a regional conflict with a ground invasion of gaza possible any moment. israel's prime minister speaking with his troops, vowing to, quote, demolish hamas, mobilizing 360,000 reservists in pursuit of militants who plotted the rampage through israeli border towns that took 1400 lives earlier this month. we will strike hamas from the top through its institutions, all the way down to the individuals that conducted the butchery of our babies. israel's military friday ordered more than 1 million people to evacuate northern gaza, where hamas has built a sophisticated network of tunnels to hide and possibly hold hostages taken in the attack. an estimated 600,000 people in gaza have listened to those orders and evacuated south . in a new interview, president biden warned the israelis not to occupy gaza, which hamas has led since 2007. what happened in gaza, in my view, is hamas and

the extreme elements of hamas don't represent all the palestinian people. >> and i think that it would be a mistake to for israel to occupy gaza again. but to going in and taking out the extremists, the hezbollah is up north, but hamas down south is a necessary requirement. >> israel has pounded gaza with thousands of bombs in the nine days since the hamas attack. it says this video shows a strike that killed a hamas commander, president biden has said he's confident israel is doing everything it can to avoid killing civilians. but according to the un, gaza is running out of body bags as the palestinian death toll tops 2600. food, water and gas supplies have been cut off for days and hospitals are running out of medical supplies. as a tense scene at this bakery as people scramble

for bread. >> i don't know if it's stay alive or not. >> sources say the biden administration has asked israel what it plans to do after it invades gaza, but apparently did not get an answer. as to its strategy going forward. >> if it does, it will be responsible for the welfare of some 2 million palestinians living there. it will have to provide services like food, water and electric city. and right now, there's no obvious successor to hamas. >> meanwhile, the us is sending a second aircraft carrier to the region. the uss eisenhower, a show of force aimed at deterring iran and others from joining the conflict. iranian backed hezbollah fighters have exchanged gunfire with israeli troops on the country's northern border. israel releasing this video overnight, claiming to show a strike on hezbollah's military infrastructure. iran's foreign minister this weekend warned israel of a regional escalation if, quote, aggressions against the palestinians don't stop a war with hezbollah would make gaza a sideshow. israel said it's reopening the water supply to

southern parts of gaza. but as of last night, the water was still not running in the area. >> we have new details about efforts to evacuate thousands of americans from that region. abc's justin finch has that part of the story. justin, good morning. >> rihanna. and good morning. americans trying to leave the war zone have a new option this morning, but it's likely just for a few hours this morning. an egyptian controlled border crossing out of gaza, the rafah border crossing was expected to briefly reopen, offering a sliver of hope to foreign nationals trying to leave gaza, including about 600 americans. >> our goal is to ensure that every american who is in gaza has safe passage out. >> gaza is safe, which between egypt, israel and the mediterranean, leaving people who want to evacuate with nowhere to go until egypt agreed to temporarily reopen the crossing. american maha barakat tells abc's ian pannell her attempts to flee gaza have been met with frustration and confusion.

>> we're trying to get out. it's going to be a short one, they say. it's going to be a short notice, like are you talking about like you're going to give me 20 minutes to gather my stuff, get to the crossing and leave? it's going to take me about a half hour to get there. >> four americans trying to leave israel. the state department says charter flights out of tel aviv will continue today and tomorrow on a rolling basis. us citizens were also able to leave the israeli city of haifa this morning on a ship to cyprus. and last night, 270 americans landed in tampa after the state of florida flew them out of tel aviv. >> some people laugh, some people cry. we have four dogs on the plane, 91 kids, captains don't know what's going on. >> meanwhile, a detroit man has now filed a lawsuit against secretary of state antony blinken and defense secretary lloyd austin claiming the us government failed to evacuate palestinian americans, including his parents. right now, they're

joseph zuba targeted the boy and his mother in their plainfield, illinois, home because of their muslim faith. amid the ongoing war between israel and hamas. >> she said he knocked on the door and that he attempted to choke her and said, you muslims must die. >> the boy, suffering 26 stab wounds, his mother stabbed at least a dozen times. >> she ran into the bathroom and called 911. and by the time she came out, he had located and murdered her child, six year old wadiya. >> the attack coming during a weekend of rising tensions due to the war overseas clashes breaking out between pro-palestinian and pro-israel protesters. at this rally in los angeles, where pepper spray was reportedly used, fbi director christopher wray in a speech this weekend, said while there have been no specific credible plots against the us, there has been an increase in reported threats since the war broke out.
