washed his car and that's how brazen they are on the eve of oakland, mayor tsingtao's first state of the city address is this community meeting was held at b.b. memorial cathedral. >> not just complaining, but those here advocating for change. after a weekend where we saw three more killings, bringing the yearly homicide total in oakland above 100. >> we need professional security teams, ems or policemen to guard the blocks, either walking or just having a presence as a deterrent. >> several people here would also like to see some police officers on bicycles going forward. burglaries, robberies and vehicle thefts are all up. someone even stole this taco truck last weekend. councilman dan kalb is calling for license plate readers to be installed on all freeway onramps and asking for more help from the feds. >> we are now going to formally and officially ask the federal government and we're going to

emergence of zoom bombing. so we don't want to create the platform or these zoom bombing can occur with that hate speech. and again, this is also contingent with your city diverse city policy, where you need to denounce that type of behavior and hate speech by policy. >> walnut creek banned zoom public comments earlier this year for the same reason. and san francisco is now considering a ban, too, after a racist zoom ambush a few weeks ago during a board of supervisors meeting. new developments tonight in israel's war with hamas. president biden will be visiting israel on wednesday. and new york governor kathy hochul is also making a trip this week. >> it comes as global fears increase about the war with hamas growing into a much larger conflict in the middle east. with the us caught in between. the key concern is evacuating civilians from the gaza strip before a possible israel ground invasion. >> refugees from inside gaza have been heading to the egyptian border and dissipating.

it will open to allow some people out of the war zone access to water and supplies are running dangerously low as israeli defense forces continue to pound the gaza strip. it's absolutely horrendous. >> the bodies are stacked up. people are too afraid to bury their dead. when you drive by one of the targeted buildings, there's the stench of decaying bodies ahead of biden's visit this week, abc news reports the top us military commander in the middle east just arrived in israel. >> tonight, president biden will underscore our crystal clear message to any actor, state or non-state, trying to take advantage of this crisis to attack israel. don't. nearly 2000 us troops have been told to be ready for possible deployment to the region. >> it is a place that has a long history of demonstrations over the decades at uc berkeley today, hundreds of pro-palestinian students rallied and filled sproul plaza and blocked access to the cal campus. at saturday gate. the demonstrators called for a free

be sunny bay and inland by noontime. a little bit of fog still lingering at the coast. and then it's a warmer afternoon with mid 60s to upper 80s temperatures dropping off into the upper 50s to mid 70s. closer to sunset. we do have a big warm up on the way. i'll let you know who's going to feel that heat coming right up. >> alma all right, sandhya, thank you so much. dot those i's and cross those t's. cursive will be coming back to classrooms across california for the lovely looking riding style has been somewhat of a lost art lately, thanks to texts, emojis and all the rest. so tonight, abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez is looking at the new yet old skill being taught again in school to additional handwriting is making a comeback in california schools . >> on friday, governor newsom signed a bill that would require cursive instruction in first through sixth grade handwriting actually activates different parts of the brain that do not get activated when printing block letters or typing.

>> can you read what this says? learning how to read and write in cursive is going to be new for students and for some teachers. >> for 13 years, our teacher education programs have said cursive is not part of the standards we have quite a chunk of teachers who have not taught it and who haven't needed to teach it, and some who probably were not taught it themselves in english and language arts, private tutor said it's important to be open to different things for different kids. >> a lot of the neurodiverse and learning disabled kids i've worked with actually do better with cursive. um i've read that it has something to do with a different part of the brain that the same part that you use for drawing and those flowing movements can really help the kids. they don't have to be picking up the pencil. >> victoria lara is a calligrapher based out of napa and works throughout the bay area. four years ago, lara turned her passion into a business and started blossom, an ink studio i do in studio and on

site events, so i've worked with big brands, local businesses. lara said. learning cursive has helped transfer her skill of lettering to engravings and wood burning, having something handwritten is just it's a different feeling. >> it's a very emotion, whole feeling behind it. lara said her son in high school wasn't taught cursive as much and he's learned the skill more through her calligraphy. now he's used to it. he definitely takes them a little bit longer to read the note cards or whatever it is, but but he definitely has gotten used to it. now and that's something that i told him, honey, like we need to we need to work on your person in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. tomorrow marks one of the most significant days in bay area history. >> 34 years since the 1989 loma prieta earthquake. >> the marina is really hard hit. there are cracks everywhere. >> oh, my god. look at that. the

squabbling. i think the american people are tired of watching this this fiasco unfold. but there may be some surprises yet in store with some moderate republican lawmakers in talks with democrats about a possible bipartisan alternative. >> now to your voice, your vote. representative adam schiff continues to be the top fundraiser in the race for dianne feinstein's senate seat. the la times looked at campaign contributions over the past three months. schiff has about $32 million in cash on hand. he has money left over from his easy house reelection last year. so that's now going toward this campaign. oakland representative barbara lee is very low in funding with just $1.3 million on hand. a spending quickly as cash comes in to build a more of a fund raising base. that's the big challenge for a southern california representative, katie porter is in the middle with $12 million. the primary election is now about five months away. >> every day here at abc7, our

focus is finding stories in our communities, pushing to help build a better bay area in meaningful ways. and tonight we're highlighting some of those breakthroughs. our first takes us to the south bay. thanks to a new grant from google. students in san jose will be introduced to the world of robotics and ai. $10 million is going to support robotics clubs across the country with 450,000 going to rec foundation for california schools. it will offer robotics classes during the school day, plus advanced clubs after school for students to compete across the country. >> there's mindsets that are adopted by these students at such a young age that they can or they can't do technology, or they can or they can't do math or they can't, or they can't do science well with robotics. they do it all and they don't even know it. >> school students got to start these new programs today at adelante two dual language academy. the goal is to build self confidence for them to end up in the field of stem one day and by the way, students in the

robotics club on campus will use their skills to later compete in a national competition next year. our next abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough tonight also has to do with building our future generations where we're really going to blend and integrate the best of the academic community as well as government laboratory like nasa. >> nasa and uc berkeley announced the launch of the berkeley space center. >> the new campus will be designed for research and advancements and will be located on the nasa ames campus in mountain view. officials say the $2 billion project will bring the private, academic and governmental sectors together in one facility. today is a very special day here at abc7, and for disney fans everywhere. >> for our parent company, disney is celebrating 100 years of stories. magic and memories on this day in 1923, walt and his brother roy founded the walt disney company and it's grown into countless memories over the decades. celebrations took place all across the globe today, including at tonight's

so over the next few days as it nudges closer, those temperatures are going up. look at this stunning view from our mount tam cam as we look at the city by the bay. but you certainly will notice some fog out there. warming begins tomorrow. santa rosa going from 80 degrees today to 85. so five degrees warmer. not so noticeable around places like half moon bay, up one up one in oakland and san jose up two degrees. livermore, you're going to go from 81 to 85 and redwood city four degrees warmer from the 70s to the 80s. here is a little bit of fog from our sutro tower camera over downtown san francisco. good air quality for your tuesday. it's going to go to moderate as those temperatures rise. not much of the wind to kind of stir up the atmosphere wednesday and thursday. but still safe to be outside as we look at live doppler seven, we do have that fog. watch out. visibility will be poor across parts of our coastal regions, especially early tomorrow morning during the commute 60s and 70s. right now it's pretty mild outside for most of you. a live view from our pier 39 camera and you can

certainly see some fog out there. areas of fog overnight may be dense in patches warming trend begins tomorrow and there's a possibility of records both wednesday and thursday. so midweek time period, there's a fog at 5 a.m. as we go hour by hour, the fog pulls away to the coastline and then in the afternoon, in the evening, just kind of hangs around near the beaches. but for the rest of you, you are looking at sun temperatures first thing in the morning in the 50s. and the 60s once again, watch out. visibility will be poor. maybe give yourself a little extra time. it could be a little misty as well. tomorrow afternoon, mid 60s along the coast, all the way to the upper 80s inland for your tuesday. if that's not warm enough for you, look at wednesday we're going to be mainly in the 70s around the coast 80s around the bay 90s even showing up inland. and this is going to repeat. but those temperatures are going to come up even a few more degrees for your thursday, which will be the hottest day. don't get too used to that idea because look what's going to happen as we head towards the weekend. clouds will
