>> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. the message is loud and clear from oakland mayor shengtao and san francisco's london breed their full focus, they say, is now on cutting down on crime. but residents wonder if that's really going to happen. yeah we're taking time tonight to hear from you on the day to day issues being felt and the ways you'll soon get a voice in building a better bay area abc7 news reporter ryan curry is in the newsroom tonight with how residents are responding to mayor tao's plan. ryan. >> yeah, dan, a good evening. words are one thing, but oakland residents and business owners tell me they want action. many are fed up with what they say is too much crime and too little action from the city. if you ask oakland residents, many will have a story to tell when it comes to crime. broken down uh- ripped the safe out of the floor or took the safe out, rolled it out. >> people driving down the streets have been robbed at gunpoint and if you call 911 calling the police at 3 a.m. and then not coming until 9 a.m. in

the morning, well, we were there in front waiting for the police to come. >> they were breaking into several other businesses down the street. >> abc7 has reported on several issues of brazen crime throughout the city. oakland police say robberies and carjackings have gone up. homicides have surpassed the triple digits for the third straight year. mayor shengtao delivered her state of the city address tuesday. much of her speech focused on limiting crime. >> everyone in oakland wants to be safe wherever you live, whoever you are, you have a right to feel safe in the city of oakland, residents say they need solutions immediately. >> monique ramos says her store has been burglarized eight times. this year. >> they also broke in a broke the gate broke pretty much all of our equipment inside the store because there was no more safe. >> resident laurie beltran calls oakland the wild west lately. this is what she sees in her neighborhood motorcycle riders tearing up the park near lake merritt joyride on the weekends and throughout every day for,

you know, however long they want . uh- beltran says she hasn't seen any increased police presence either. business owner ali mohammed says he's been hit by thieves this year and feels criminals get away with whatever they want. >> the people are really scared to go out and shop or leave their cars in public. that's how that's how serious it is. >> in her speech, mayor tao says she plans to add more police to the city. >> i am dedicated to a more robust and accountable police department with an engaging presence on our streets and specialized units to tackle specific crimes. >> residents we spoke with say they support those moves, but say they need to be implemented fast. if she she don't have no strategy to do something right now, then i don't think it's going to be able to help. and you can just see the frustration from oakland citizens. many of them tell me they know plenty of others who have similar stories about crime. they also tell me they have never seen oakland this bad. live in the newsroom,

ryan curry, abc seven news. >> all right, ryan, thank you for that. and we are not done diving into these issues for you tomorrow. >> we will be speaking with mayor tao live to get thoughts on her state of the city address, her progress in finding a police chief and her future visions for oakland. you can watch it tomorrow at 11 a.m. on midday live right here on abc7. >> all right. crime is certainly a bad and a problem across the bay in san francisco. we'll focus on that now beginning with the aggressive stance being taken against street vendors around town. the city is banning all street vending on mission street and around the other bart stations downtown. as abc seven news reporter j.r. stone explains, the sale of stolen stuff is putting other people in danger. >> if all goes as planned with city officials, these images of street vending in san francisco's mission district will be a thing of the past to just make it very clear and simple. >> no vending on mission street right now. >> that is santiago lerma, an aide to san francisco supervisor

hillary ronen, the supervisor put out a community newsletter tuesday saying that starting in november, the city will ban street vending on mission street in the mission district. >> what we've seen over the last year and a half is mission street really being flooded with large scale fencing organizations, fencing, operation is involve the buying and selling of stolen goods. >> san francisco police chief bill scott is well aware of the problems in the area. >> we've done operations. we've we've arrested some fencers, you know, people that are that's what they do. they buy stolen goods for very little money and then they sell it on the on the, you know, the black market, if you will. >> lerma says as the situation is so bad that workers fear for their safety when asking individuals for permits to the point where our public works inspectors are now wearing bulletproof vests while they're walking the streets, they are escorted by police. >> but that is the level of danger that's out there for city

workers. >> they have been subject to attacks, assaults and verbal and physical assaults. and so it really makes it difficult for them to do their job both chief scott and some city leaders blame a 2018 state law that they say basically decriminalized street vending for some of the recent problems with stolen goods. >> lerma says the city is now working to try to obtain an indoor space in the mission, where permitted vendors can legally sell their items. as j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> and san francisco mayor london breed is taking her plan to increase police power throughout the city. straight to voters. >> we are taking something to the ballot. we're going around the board of supervisors. we're going around the police commission. we're going straight to the people of san francisco. >> mayor breed introduced her new, safer san francisco measure today, which would roll back some of the police commission's restrictions on things like pursuits and the use of

surveillance technology. mayor breed says the measure would also limit police paperwork, giving officers more time to patrol streets. the mayor says she's putting this initiative on the march 2024 ballot. the police commission says it is in full support of breed's plan. >> meantime, mayor breed is pushing for a controversial drug treatment initiative that will be on the ballot in march. if passed, the measure would require single adults with a substance abuse disorder to take part in treatment programs in order to continue receiving welfare from the city and county. it would also require people in assistance programs like food stamps to undergo screening for dependency on illegal drugs. financial assistance would be revoked if people refuse help with their substance abuse. certainly the drug crisis touches on a lot of important issues. and if you're looking for an ally when it comes to things like abuse, mental illness and more, turn to abc7 news.com/take action. we have put together a list of local resources to get started. >> well, we are feeling that warmth today in some places just

like sandhya warned us. so let's quickly check in with her for wednesday's outlook with our 24 hour accuweather forecast. sandhya yeah, we're going to go from warmer to hotter tomorrow so let me show you the heat advisory that begins for the santa cruz mountains and santa clara county tomorrow at 11 a.m. >> the other areas shaded in orange beginning at 11 p.m. tomorrow. all areas will last until 11 p.m. thursday. the concern is above average. temperatures will bring a risk of heat related illnesses for those who are sensitive to the heat right now, the immediate concern is the fog on the golden gate bridge. that's what you're going to start out with tomorrow morning. some dense fog, 50 on those temperatures by noontime, warming quickly into the 60 to 80 range. and at 4 p.m, we're talking about warm to hot day, 70 to 90 numbers leveling off at 7 p.m. this isn't the hottest day. i'll be back with a closer look at that forecast coming right up. dan >> okay, sandy, see you shortly. let's move now to the conflict in the middle east where there is a lot of finger pointing tonight over a deadly blast at a

hospital in gaza. hundreds of people died in the explosion in that palestinian officials claim was a result of an israeli airstrike. israeli officials insist it was a failed rocket launch by a militant group. and there's evidence to back this up. so there is a real dispute here. it comes as president biden is on a flight to israel where he is going to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the president was supposed to attend a summit in jordan, but that got canceled. his visit is to reinforce the united states support of israel. it's important for people to remember the additional military forces that are either being prepared or are on their way to the region is really about sending a signal of deterrence. >> we don't want to see this conflict escalate and widen. there are no plans or intentions to put us boots on the ground in combat in israel. everything we're doing right now is about sending a strong signal of deterrence. >> roughly 200 hostages are being held by hamas and other militant groups. a video released today reportedly shows one of the hostages who was

kidnaped at a music festival tonight. the white house says the number of americans killed in the violence rose to 31 with 13 men unaccounted for. >> a vigil seeking a cease fire in the middle east took place tonight in san francisco. dozens of people gathered at dolores park, many of them holding candles. speakers pointed to the recent events, including a blast at the hospital in gaza as a reason to bring the conflict to an end. tonight's event was organized by several groups, including jewish voice for peace and palestinian youth movement, the house will vote again tomorrow on a speaker today, republican representative tim jordan failed to get enough votes in the first round to secure the position. >> jordan fell short of the 217 votes needed, winning just 200, while democrats nominated minority leader hakeem jeffries with 212 votes. it's been two weeks since former speaker kevin mccarthy was ousted and with no end in sight to the sag-aftra strike, another picket is planned for tomorrow. outside netflix's headquarters in los gatos. we've seen similar action

notably came earlier this month when a cruise car rolled over a woman on market street in san francisco after she had been hit by another car moments before the cruise issued a statement saying in part, cruise's safety record over 5 million miles continues to outperform comparable human drivers at a time when pedestrian injuries and deaths are at an all time high. >> amazon is flying into the future with drone deliveries. the company showed off its prime air drones yesterday at its san joaquin county fulfillment center. the drones can deliver packages within three and a half mile radius from the facility. they do follow faa restrictions. amazon says prime air can get your delivery to your door in an hour or less. >> well, new at 11 bay area rap legend e-40 is going to be honored in vallejo this weekend. why vallejo? well, that is where he was born and raised. >> yes. earl stevens, which is his real name, will receive a key to the city this saturday on top of his illustrious music career, he has donated to numerous charities in vallejo
