security are coming for next month's summit of major world leaders. good evening. i'm karina nova and i'm j.r. stone. >> leaders from 21 nations and hundreds of ceos will be here for the asia-pacific economic cooperation summit, or apec, on november 11th. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn explains what the secret service and local authorities will be doing to keep everyone safe. >> san francisco, known for its iconic sights and sounds, is about to host what some consider to be the super bowl of world economies, or apec, the asia pacific economic cooperation summit is a very big deal. dozens of bus shelters across the city have spelled it out. apec is going to be epic. expect 21 world leaders from the pacific rim regions, including president joe biden, canadian prime minister justin trudeau, possibly chinese president xi jinping. expect a lot of security all over san francisco. >> what i can tell you is there will be an extraordinary amount of law enforcement, military and

public safety personnel in san francisco for this event. so well above what anybody has ever seen here before. >> along the outer perimeter, san francisco police will be supported by about 1000 chp officers. >> i can't think the california highway patrol enough. i can't think the us secret service, all of our partners up here in the inner high security zone at moscone center in yerba buena gardens, the secret service will secure the area with a 14 foot unscathed fence. >> the higher security zone will be limited to people with credentials. the secret service is also talking to local transit leaders over the temporary closure of the central subway that runs underneath the security zone for security reasons, the yerba buena station and fourth and brandon stations of the central subway will need to be closed for the duration of the event. >> we're grateful, however, that we're able to reroute trains. >> bus routes will be rerouted to the outer edge of the zone. the powell street bart station

will likely remain open throughout the summit. clifton clark, the area general manager of marriott hotels, says his hotels are geared up for this big event. >> call every other week with all of the marriott branded hotels to discuss shefs preparations for their teams staffing outside security assistance. dozens of law enforcement people that have been procured from other municipalities to come in and help out. plus many of the hotels, many of our marriott hotels have a lot of secret service staying with them as well. so they're this is probably going to be the safest place in the united states to be the last time apec was held in the united states was back in 2011, in honolulu, in san francisco, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> thank you, suzanne. president biden plans to address the nation tomorrow night after his whirlwind visit to israel today.

mr. biden and tel aviv pledged support to israel during meetings with prime minister benjamin netanyahu and top officials. the president convinced the israelis to allow food, water and supplies into gaza from egypt and also announced $100 million in humanity aid. he addressed the deadly blast at a gaza hospital expressing condolences to families of those killed, adding it appears to have been caused by a rocket misfired by militants. the attack has prompted protests outside us and israeli embassies in the arab and muslim world. >> a tragic end to the search for an israeli mother of two with family members in the us. we've learned that sharon shmunis harel was killed during an attack by hamas at the music festival she was attending. she was celebrating her 40th birthday. i spoke with her brother in law last night who says their family is still in shock. >> and don't forget, don't forget she's not just representing an army or israel.

she's a civilian. my sister in law went for a festival and they massacred the people. you all have to understand it. they are you have to understand it. it's crazy. families got slaughtered by hamas. people that's it. >> sharon leaves behind a six year old, a nine year old and her husband. her family tells me that as part of jewish culture, they are now in seven days of mourning. ohad says sharon's remains were unrecognizable and dna was used to identify her. >> this afternoon, a bay area resident who witnessed the tragedy and destruction in israel firsthand is finally back in the us, but not before running into multiple roadblocks . tessa morgan arrived at sfo a short time ago from portugal with assistance from the state department and north bay congressman mike thompson's office. morgan spent ten months

in israel traveling with a jewish youth group. congressman thompson says so far work to get his constituents home has been effective. >> i talked to my district office staff this afternoon and everyone who has been working one of these cases reports to me that their the people they've been working with are either home or on their way home. >> thompson says for right now, the turmoil to select a new house speaker has not impacted efforts to bring americans home. but he says there needs to be a resolution soon if congress is to move forward with foreign aid. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes will have more on tessa morgan's journey tonight at six. >> still, events across the bay area joined a national walkout today to call for a cease fire in gaza. there were marches from berkeley to san francisco. more than 100 teens took to the streets outside of galileo high school. >> they have been seeing

viewers told us they felt the shaking there in stockton, in modesto and other parts of the east bay. we visited isleton today shortly after the quake and there are no reports of damage or injuries. but a clerk at a local store tells us this was her first time experiencing an earthquake and it made for a few scary moments. >> all of a sudden, i see everything shaking, like going back and forth, like that, and i hear something falling behind me . there was three bottles of the smirnoff that luckily they were plastic. they were not bottles, but living it live. it was it was a very scary. yeah >> the earthquake also triggered widespread inspections of levees and other infrastructure in the area, but there was no damage to the delta supplies water to an estimated 27 million people across the state. and we want to ma sure you'rprepared for the next earthquake. go to abc7 news.com. slash prepare nor-cal. we have a guide to get you and your family ready right now.

well, it is a spectacular day across the bay area as this live picture from our camera on mount sutro shows us warm to hot temperatures depending on where you are, but beautiful outside. it's beautiful. but i stepped outside and i had to find some shade. it's steamy out there in san francisco and of course, various parts of the bay area. so let's get the latest from abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel because it's going to get hotter. sandhya can you believe that? >> yes, temperatures are going up even more tomorrow. karina and j.r. let's take a look at those numbers right now. good evening to all of you. right now ranging from the 70s to the 90s. yeah, in case you're thinking, we're out of it, not quite. heat advisory is up right now for the santa cruz mountains. santa clara county. it goes into effect for all other areas shaded in orange at 11 p.m. tonight. all of these areas will remain up until 11 p.m. tomorrow. the risk of for heat related illnesses is running moderate for most areas, major for parts of the bay area. so

take it easy if you're sensitive to the heat. the other concern is you see the surf in santa cruz right now. beach hazard statement in effect until 7 a.m. tomorrow as there is an increase risk of sneaker waves. 10 to 11 footers now, that hazardous statement will get replaced by a high surf advisory tomorrow. so and it's because those breakers will be building 17 to 22ft and there is a risk of rip currents as well, with dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. definitely be careful if you want to go to the beach to escape the hot weather, i'll be back to let you know how long this heat is hanging around and we'll talk about some dramatic changes is in time for your weekend coming up, karina. >> all right, sandhya, thank you . the state department of justice is teaming up with a federal task force to stop fentanyl trafficking at the california mexico border. attorney general rob bonta made the announcement today in san diego. the county has seen a 700% increase in fentanyl overdose deaths since 2016. that's according to the doj. while their bonta led a closed

found he mishandled two misconduct cases. he was since cleared of any wrongdoing. >> now to the ongoing efforts to rid san francisco of illegal street vendors. city officials concerned about safety have now banned all street vending on mission street and around bart stations downtown. abc seven news reporter lou pena has been following the story for months and is live in the newsroom with the impact on vendors lose. that's right, karina. >> supervisor ronan is categorized in the ban on street vending as a necessary emergency measure. she's hoping to start with 90 days, but if it works, keep it indefinitely. it's been four months since san francisco's street vendors in the mission district entered a permitting program. but now they're being told street vending will be banned next month for 90 days as an emergency measure to address health and safety issues. >> vending from mission street from 14th to 25th and a small perimeter around the bart stations. >> supervisor hillary ronen represents this district. her

office is getting reports of san francisco public works employees being attacked and on permitted vendors blocking sidewalks. she's hoping that by banning street vending in selected areas, those who are selling stolen goods will leave. >> it's hard to enforce and it's just not working. it's not working enough. this is so much a safety problem. >> we went to the mission district to speak to vendors. many had no idea this enforcement is about to happen. what else are we going to be able to live out of? >> todos? not only me, but everybody. >> every vendor we spoke to has a permit, and now they're confused, asking why they have to pay the price for the group that's not following the rules. we are a very clean area here in the mission. but if you look across the street, you can tell that it's a different a different look. cesar has two daughters and says he's concerned he won't have enough

time. up 11 in napa, up 12 in oakland, san jose, you're running nine degrees warmer than yesterday at this time in case you want to go to santa cruz to just kind of enjoy the beach, be careful, rip current and sneaker wave risk is running higher and that will continue tomorrow. so a spare the air alert has been issued for tomorrow. you will notice the air quality is going into that moderate to poor category. but by friday and saturday, things will improve as the heat really backs off blue skies from our golden gate bridge camera, a gentle breeze, low 80s from san francisco to oakland mountain view. right now it is 87 in san jose and 75 in half moon bay, east bay hills camera looking towards mount diablo. you see a bit of that haze building right now. 91 in santa rosa, upper 80s, napa, novato, fairfield, livermore, you're at 86 degrees. so it is warm out there from our exploratorium camera. clear skies as we look towards the transamerica pyramid. heat peaks tomorrow. records are likely relief arrives on friday and there's a big cooldown coming with a chance of showers this

weekend. and so as we go hour by hour, 6:00 tonight, you'll notice many areas are still in the 70s and 80s by 8 p.m, temperatures begin to come down. but you really don't get that relief until tomorrow morning when. the numbers wil on the mild side and then quickly rise up tomorrow afternoon. we are looking at many areas getting up into the 90s. i'll show you where the ultimately end up in just a moment. morning temperatures, 5060s mainly clear skies, maybe a patch or two of fog along the coastline tomorrow afternoon. south bay temperatures 94 in santa clara, 97. los gatos, 95 degrees in san jose. so, yeah, it's going to be hot on the peninsula, 96 in redwood city, 86 half moon bay, downtown san francisco and south city getting up to 90 degrees. we are likely going to see records tomorrow, 96 in santa rosa, 94, san rafael, 98. in calistoga heading into the east bay, berkeley, oakland low, 90s, 92 in fremont, inland areas you'll be baking in

the heat 98. in fairfield, 94, concord 96 degrees in livermore. of course, there are a lot of homes that don't have air conditioning here in the bay area. and if you're one of them, here's the good news. by friday, those temperatures will really back off. but you're going to be feeling the heat tomorrow. 80s and 90s tomorrow. relief arrives on friday and then it's much cooler for the weekend. 60s and 70s with a level one system bringing us scattered showers on sunday and temperatures will rebound a little bit next week. we're not going to rerun that heat. j.r. and karina next week. it's just tomorrow will be the hottest day we could deal with that. this was a short burst of hot weather. that's right. and so short. that's the key. so it's not going to last long. >> i wouldn't i would guess the parks would be last time it got hot outside, they were busy into the nighttime hours here in san francisco, especially in the city, because this is summer for san francisco. >> so, i mean, you both walked outside and you're like, oh, my gosh, you know, it was warm, but it feels good. later in the night. so we'll we'll take the cool down once the sun goes

warm welcome home today for the crew from the us coast guard cutter monroe. family members greeted the 140 member unit at the base in alameda this morning. they're back from a four month deployment in hawaii, japan, malaysia and singapore. star guard commanders say the coast guardsmen worked with partner nations to keep the pacific free and open for some seeing their loved ones after so long proved a bit overwhelming. you know, it's one thing to miss. >> my husband, but it's another thing done. >> miss the father of your kids. >> so what a special moment right there. the ship will stay docked in alameda for the next few months for servicing before leaving on its next mission. >> we have much more coming up at 530 on our live stream, including a deeper look at the battle to fight the drug crisis in san francisco. abc7 news
