[laughs] ♪ ♪ yes! yes! yes! i win! bad doggy. leads wanders off in east bay public school campus. he was found in the street by a driver. more than 1500 feet from his school. tonight they're thankful he's okay, but furious that it happened. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ahmad daetz. we could have easily been reporting a tragedy tonight instead of a close call. >> abc seven news i-team reporter melanie woodrow has a story you'll see only on seven do spider-man.

>> spider-man. show her captain america. how about hulk? >> hulk? >> five year old jojo loves superheroes. monday, the kindergartner had an adventure of his own after he wandered from del rey elementary school in san lorenzo during recess. after asking to go to the restroom, person on their line told me they were from the school and that jojo was missing . >> i said, what do you mean missing? we can't find him. and she asked me, does he like to hide? i go, did you call the police? she said, no, not yet. >> jojo's dad rushed to the school and he called me and said, yeah, they found him. >> he was on bachmann and a citizen had stopped and called the sheriff's department and waited with him. >> that citizen was angie williams, who was driving with her six year old daughter, faith, when she spotted jojo. >> so i turn this corner and i see him run right here and he's still running. but i'm waiting to see if there's a parent. no one came. so i turned around in the middle of the street attempting to block jojo. the thing is, the school is on this side, so he had already crossed the street, so he's ran all the

way down here, ran through the stop sign and was going towards the stoplight. >> he was all the way down the end of bachmann, all the way down there. and he's running the whole time, ran the whole time? yeah. approximately a third of a mile. i was like, someone's going to hit him and nobody is stopping. once she and another driver stopped, they called 911. when alameda county sheriff's deputies arrived and she posted this picture to the. what's happening? sant lorenzo facebook group. this this little boy look familiar to you? the alameda county sheriff's office tells the i-team the little boy walked away from the school just before 10 a.m. around 10:15 a.m. del rey elementary school called them to report he was missing. a spokesman for the school district tells abc7 news the district is investigating what occurred and that student safety is always its highest priority. but jojo's mom tina questions why staff allowed her son, who is nonverbal, out of their sight. >> i'm just pretty shocked because he's only five and he is special needs. i wouldn't imagine they would let him go on his own to the bathroom, the district spokesperson tells the

i-team jojo's class includes a teacher and two other adults for nine students. >> also that an adult supervises individual students as they enter and exit the restroom. >> the principal called me at the end of the day saying proper bathroom protocol was not followed. so they let him go and they kept a long eye on him is what they how they put it. they kept a long eye on him. >> the school has not said how jojo got out. >> i mean, it could have been so much worse. he could have been hit by a car. someone could have taken him. >> i know that they should be doing a lot more of keeping the kids safe while they're here. >> and it begs the question to me, if they can get out, can people get in? i mean, they're supposed to be locked down. and how safe are the schools, according to the district spokesperson, school doors can be opened from the inside in accordance with building and fire codes, but they are locked to entry from the outside. >> the school has an intercom system to monitor the front door area and allow approved visitors to enter. >> did you go on the street? huh did you get to ride in a police car? tina isn't sure how much her son understands about what happened. >> she's mostly relieved he's

expecting a rerun of the records. here are the records for today. high temperature of 93. san jose, sfo, 88, 95. napa, richmond, 92. all new records for today and this morning, we had record low temperatures with temperatures going into the low 60s surpass icing or tying the previous records. as you take a look at the high temperatures for the day, it was definitely hot. 93 in livermore, 92 degrees in santa rosa to warm around places like oakland, 89 degrees. high surf advisory has been extended until 3 a.m. wave heights are still up there. it's going to take a little bit of time before the ocean calms down. here's a look at what you can expect tomorrow. it's a much cooler day mid 60s to mid 80s. even bigger changes are ahead for the weekend. i'll be back with that coming up. dan and emma. >> okay, sandhya, thanks. >> in a rare oval office address today, president joe biden made a direct appeal to the american public for us support for the wars in israel and ukraine. >> the president called this moment an inflection point, a battle between the world's

democracies and autocracies, saying it would be a mistake for the us to turn its back on those nations. according to abc news, the president is asking congress to approve an enormous $105 billion foreign aid package $60 billion for ukraine, $14 billion for israel. >> and another 14 billion for border security and billions more for the indo pacific region, which includes taiwan. humanitarian aid is also included, and american leadership is what holds the world together. >> american alliance is what keeps us america safe. american values are what make us a partner that other nations want to work with to put all that at risk. if we walk away from ukraine, we turn our backs on israel. it's just not worth it. >> president biden says he's making the urgent funding request tomorrow. it will face a challenging path through the house, where legislation has been gridlocked as it enters a second week without a speaker. >> we are seeing some pushback here locally tonight to

president biden's address and the us response. sky seven was flying overhead during this massive pro-palestinian demonstration that took place outside the federal building in san francisco, and that is what some protesters did to the front entrance, leaving a message for the us government to end aid to israel. some protesters locked arms and sat down near the doors , calling on speaker emerita. nancy pelosi, whose local office is inside the building to sign on to an immediate cease fire in gaza and president biden's address comes as governor newsom arrives in israel tomorrow. >> during the one day trip, newsom will meet with those affected by hamas attack on israeli civilians. the state is sending medical supplies to the region, including provisions intended for the gaza strip starting next week. governor newsom will be in china for a week long tour focused on the country's climate change policies. and in the meantime, not too far away, we saw another large candlelight vigil designed to create a sense of unity during these unsettling times. abc7 news reporter ryan curry

first hit in the back and then ran as security guards distracted. 31 year old san juan yang. when officers arrived, they were coughing because of the pepper spray that consulate security guards had deployed. something that impacts yang. two seconds later, officers then fired shots that proved to be fatal in slow motion. you can see yang waving the knife back and forth through the air. it almost appears as though yang couldn't see anything. i asked chief bill scott about that thursday day. >> what i will say, though, in fairness, is we don't really know what this person could see or not see. and we at that point, the officers remember the call was that the person had a gun and in fairness to the situation, we don't know what he could or couldn't see. >> police say yang had this knife in his hand and found this fully loaded crossbow in the back seat of his car with 240

caliber fired cartridge casings. witnesses heard him previously asking or demanding the ccp or chinese communist party, but police won't say what he was doing there. j.r. stone, abc seven news. >> new details tonight on the couple killed this week while cycling in napa county. the cyclists have been identified as christian and michelle deaton of portland, oregon. investigators say they were riding their bikes along silverado trail when lumber from a truck fell off and struck them. angela fisher, who was a close friend of the deaton's, spoke with abc seven news tonight. >> they loved and lived as hard as anybody could at, and they were the type of people you wanted to they made you want to be better. exceptional, exceptional people. >> it's just such a tragic freak accident. chp is continuing to investigate exactly what happened. congress is in chaos

trying to find anyone as the next house speaker. as you know, at a natural disaster test drill did not go exactly as planned. >> no, those are just a couple of the stories headlining tonight's abc seven news to know the struggle to find the next speaker of the house is dragging on. republican congressman jim jordan decided not to push for a third vote today, but a vote is expected tomorrow. jordan says he's open to finding a temporary solution, but republicans remain divided on how to move forward. laphonza butler says after consideration, she is not going to run for dianne feinstein's senate seat. >> governor newsom appointed butler a few weeks ago to complete feinstein's term. newsom had pledged to name a black woman to the senate not including any of the declared 2024 candidates, as several more arrests have been made in connection with the father's day shootout along san francisco's embarcadero that left five people hurt in vestigators today, said they also seized multiple guns and lots of ammunition. >> one suspect is due in court friday and police say the

investigation isn't done yet. >> today was the great california shakeout earthquake drill, but there may be room for improvement. many bay area residents tell abc7 news they received no mobile alert at all while others got it seven hours early in the middle of the night. organizers say it seems one of the servers was mis calibrated with the wrong time zone. >> the national oceanic and atmospheric administration is forecasting another wet winter for our region. their experts say they can't yet predict how much rain will get, but it will be more than normal. temperatures will also likely be trending higher. governor newsom has signed a new bill that allows local governments to ban synthetic lawns over health concerns. in 2015, at the height of california's drought, the state saw a boom in artificial turf. now, some synthetic lawns have been linked to cancer, causing chemicals, as well as other issues involving runoff and extreme heat. >> we made a decision at a time when the drought was so acute.

and i think we just i think it was a rash decision by frankly, i understand why we did it. the state originally blocked local communities from banning synthetic turf, but lawmakers say this new bill allows them to decide for themselves. >> the bay area's iconic jelly belly brand has just been sold to a chicago based candy company . jelly belly is headquartered in fairfield and has been family owned since the 1800s. but they are now set to be sold to the ferrera candy company. fairfield's mayor tells our media partner at the east bay times the company will stay local, adding this does not mean mass layoffs. the deal is expected to be finalized by the end of the year. >> jelly bellies melt in the heat. >> we could have found out today for sure. it was hot. >> it was. let's get to abc7 news meteorologist sandhya patel. any records? we did have records as we mentioned earlier in the broadcast, dan and alma, as we take a look, we're going to go beyond today. >> today we're going to look at the winter outlook. national

oceanic and atmospheric administration released this today and they're basically saying above average temperatures out west and across the northern tier of states this upcoming winter with above average rainfall for the western us, including the bay area and much of the southern tier states. now, i do want to caution you that it doesn't guarantee that we're going to see this. things could change between now and then. but we do know that our weather is changing for tomorrow. this area of low pressure has been drying up the southerly surge, the fog. so we have been seeing those changes, high pressure brought us the heat today. it's moving off to the east and that area of low pressure drying, the fog all the way up to the golden gate and will continue to spread during the overnight hours. watch out. the fog is dense, a quarter mile, visibility in half moon bay right now. and you look at those temperatures, they're in the 50s to 70s, quite a range . but we have seen some nice cooling tonight along the coast and near parts of the bay. there is a fog from our emeryville

camera. air quality is going to improve moderate tomorrow. looking at good air quality for your weekend plans both saturday and sunday. here's a view on the golden gate bridge. this is what you're going to be facing for the morning commute. it is pretty socked in. foggy areas for the commute dense in spots. relief from the heat tomorrow through the weekend. and we are expecting scattered showers sunday with a slight possibility of an isolated thunderstorm or two, 5:00 tomorrow morning. watch out for not just the fog along the coast and parts of the bay. you'll see some higher clouds coming in as well. but watch out for that dense fog during that morning commute. your numbers will be in the 50s and the 60s. as we take a look at the afternoon highs there, nowhere near where they were today. we're looking at mid 80s for our warmer spots like livermore and fairfield, 64 degrees in half moon bay and everybody else in between. you'll also notice filtered sunshine on for your friday and here comes sunday's system. we will see those showers developing first sunday morning in the north bay and then really just scattered in nature for the

afternoon hours going into the evening. so it's not a washout for your weekend, but we will get a level one system on sunday . the accuweather seven day forecast, it's a much cooler friday. cooling continues on saturday when you go from the mid 90s to the mid 70s. i think you'll notice that scattered showers sunday and then it's dry and a little bit milder for the start of the workweek. but it cools back off again the middle of next week with below average temperatures ama and dan. we'll be right back

her cookie talents earned her a spot in the food network's halloween cookie challenge, and abc's seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez sat down with her for a sneak peek. >> so for halloween, i'll do a 3d printed cookie cutter. this is just a black cat. >> christina ledesma has a talent for decorating cookies. the fremont baker posts her creations under the name the retro cookie lady on instagram. >> i like to channel my inner child by creating edible pieces of cartoon because it just makes me happy. >> on monday, ledesma will be competing against the nation's top cookie makers in food network's halloween cookie challenge. >> i just took it all in and

just everything about it was so exciting. >> ledesma can't share details of the episode they filmed in the spring. it was back in march when a food network casting producer discovered her edible artistry through her instagram page. >> it was a three step interview and during that third interview, i actually had to do a time demonstration for them. >> ledesma thought she bombed one of the final interview questions when they asked her, what do you love about halloween? she immediately thought of her mom. >> she was a single mom. and so for every halloween, she would always come to our schools to dress up, dress us up in costumes and take us trick or treating. so as an adult, i could see now that she has sacrificed so much to be there for us at that time. >> ledesma bakes as a hobby. she's a mom of five and is currently a student at san jose state, majoring in psychology. she as a young mom, ledesma focused on her children and work now she's focusing on her education and the creative outlet that allows her to balance it all.
