coogan says one of her first projects was in bethlehem. >> we had three faiths working together there and also an israeli, a miner and a palestinian. and together they detonated those anti tank mines,

anti-personnel land mines where eight children had died. >> roots of peace will receive a $250,000 award from the world food prize. an airbnb host says it will take thousands of dollars to repair damage after guest's accidental accidentally flooded the bathroom and then just checked out the clock is ticking for her to get help. >> and on top of all of it all, the owner is pregnant and due any day now. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn is in the newsroom with this story. suzanne so, karina, julian, the airbnb host, says this has been a nightmare. a toilet clogged by baby wipes led to sewer water overflowing, damaging the airbnb unit and the unit downstairs where the host lived. now, for the past six months, the host and her family have had to find somewhere else to live. no repairs have been made and the damages and the costs have not been resolved. >> so this is the toilet that caused the damage. you can still
4:04 pm
see the baby wipe. >> it's hard to believe that a clogged and broken toilet could have caused so much damage. >> it was the toilet that had been broken and running over for 15 plus hours. >> erica gimsa and her husband, who are expecting their first child any day now, were forced to move out of their home in the mission district six months ago. their house is still unfixed. >> there was no kitchen, no bathrooms that could be usable. >> gemser is an airbnb host, a march 15th for guests signed on to stay at her upstairs unit in the mission district for a month. >> they had actually left the evening of april 13th, presumably right before or right after this clog started. >> gemser lived in the unit directly downstairs. she didn't see any red flags until it was too late. >> water coming from every crevice, opening, every light fixture. >> gensler immediately called airbnb, who then told her to get a full estimate and receipts for the repairs to her home. she says the extent of the damage made it impact possible. to get a quick assessment.
4:05 pm
>> i tried to explain this to airbnb like this is not a this is not a broken door. this isn't furniture. >> gemser says it took weeks for airbnb's investigative plumber to arrive and determine the cause of the clogged toilet. >> three of those things happening. it's the feces. it's the baby wipes that they probably use. the entire 30 days that they were there. and the trying to relieve the clog by messing with the tank. >> gemser estimates that the damages and the losses add up to about $300,000. she says she's disappointed by airbnb's coverage policy for hosts. >> they advertise it as the $3 million host protection guarantee. so the idea is, as a host, we've got you covered top to bottom with $3 million of coverage. so don't worry. we got you. turns out 90% of that is not covered. so they've given me an offer of around $31,000. >> gemser believes she was fully covered between airbnb host coverage and her own homeowner's insurance. >> turns out that's not the
4:06 pm
case. so for people who are thinking about being hosts, look into all the different insurance you can buy, buy all of it, buy all of it. >> we reached out to airbnb and are still waiting to hear back. in the meantime, gemser says she is not accepting that $31,000 offer by airbnb. she says homeowners insurance has been a big help, but it doesn't cover everything like the loss of income. the family will be out of their unit for a year. they can't have tenants and they can't have rental income, live in the newsroom, suzanne phon, abc seven news. >> okay. thank you so much, suzanne. a tentative agreement today between teachers at the san francisco unified school district will avert a possible strike. the two sides have been negotiating since march. abc7 news reporter luis pena has a closer look at the deal after more than 12 hours, san francisco teachers and the school district reached. >> we have a deal. >> a tentative deal. but to get here, both sides began bargaining sessions at 5 p.m. thursday that extended all the
4:07 pm
way into friday morning. geoffrey finger, a math teacher at balboa high school, was part of the bargaining committee when we met him. he had only gotten 30 minutes of sleep. >> we're proud of what we were able to accomplish with this tentative agreement. we're hoping that the union rallies around it. >> among the proposal was an economic package that includes a $9,000 salary increase for teachers in the 2023 to 2024 school year. teachers will also receive an additional 5% raise for the 2024, 2025 school year, which will be in full effect by january of 2025. initially the united educators of san francisco were asking for more. >> we came in initially asking for $12,000 for the first year and 8. and again, that those might sound like large numbers, but those numbers are very much in par with, frankly, what has been 20% inflation over the last three years. >> the tentative agreement includes worker protections and higher compensation for paramedics, doctors.
4:08 pm
>> they have been paid historic low amounts in some in many cases, amounts that that would frankly lead them to go to other other jobs. this raised the floor from $18 an hour for them all the way up to $30 an hour. now, what's next? >> well, there will be several town halls where teachers will get to ask questions. and in about two weeks or so, teachers will be asked to vote. >> after that, the board will actually take action and vote on the final agreement. >> this agreement was vital to prevent the possibility of san francisco's first teacher strike since 1979. >> the big joy for me is that we were able to avoid a strike and we were able to kind of find a middle ground that really prioritized student learning and student outcomes, as well as what our educators need. >> according to the sfusd board president, this agreement will also likely help a proposed $1 billion school bond. it just allows for our whole school community to come together and be focused on what it will take

4:10 pm
hide? i go, did you call the police? she said, no, not yet. >> jojo's dad rushed to the school and he called me and said, yeah, they found him. >> he was on bachmann, and a citizen had stopped and called the sheriff's department and waited with him. >> that citizen was angie williams, who was driving with her six year old daughter, faith, when she spotted jojo. >> so i turned this corner and i see him run right here and he's still running, but i'm waiting to see if there was a parent. no one came. so i turned around in the middle of the street attempting to block jojo. >> the thing is, the school is on this side, so he had already crossed the street, so he's ran all the way down here, ran through the stop sign and was going towards the stoplight. he was all the way down the end of bachmann, all the way down there . and he's running the whole time. ran the whole time? >> yeah, approximately a third of a mile. >> i was like, someone's going to hit him and nobody's stopping. once she and another driver stopped, they called 911. when alameda county sheriff's deputies arrived and she posted this picture to the what's happening? san lorenzo, facebook group. >> this this little boy look

4:12 pm
taken him. >> i know that they should be doing a lot more of keeping the kids safe while they're here. >> and it begs the question to me, if they can get out, can people get in? i mean, they're supposed to be locked down and how safe are the schools according to the district spokesperson, school doors can be open from the inside in accordance with building and fire codes, but they are locked to entry from the outside. >> the school has an intercom system to monitor the front door area and allow approved visitors to enter. >> did you go in the street? huh did you get to ride in a police car? go >> tina isn't sure how much her son understood about what happened. she's mostly relieved he's okay. >> thank you, angie, for being a kind person, being a kind citizen and stopping and doing the right thing. i would do it for anybody's kid after jojo was found, tina says the school did not contact her. >> she reached out to them the least i could expected was, i'm so sorry that happened. >> and is he okay? >> she took jojo out of his class and is figuring out what's next. >> frankly, i don't even know if i want him in this district. i'm contemplating that now. what do i want to do? the school

4:18 pm
the bay area for crimes related to possessing these keys. some of those suspects are now facing decades in prison, but also they're being assaulted. >> they're having weapons pointed at them. they're being hit and shoved and beaten to get something really that's not even theirs. >> postal inspection says they are trying to catch more offenders to help with that. they are raising the reward for reporting mail crimes from. 50,000 to $150,000. >> letter carriers don't wake up in the morning wondering if someone's going to stick a gun in their face. so they are being hunted. and these criminals need to be held accountable. >> folks are being asked to pick up their mail as soon as possible. and don't leave it in your mailbox overnight because that's when they say the thefts are more likely to happen. another option, you can also have your mail held at the post office in san francisco. lena howland, abc seven news. >> we have good news to share about a taco truck that was stolen in oakland this weekend.

helping the environment is one part of our effort to build a better bay area. the goal to minimize our dependency on plastic bags was thrown off course during the pandemic. >> so of course, during covid, those reusable bags from home, they were discussing out of fear of spreading the virus and people opted for those heavy duty plastic bags instead. abc7 news reporter leanne melendez is here with why people just cannot let go of those plastic bags. well remember during covid you would bring in your bags from home and then you were told you can't bag them inside. >> you got to do it outside and you would bag it for fear of contamination. so some people decided it wasn't worth it. they left their bags at home and
4:32 pm
opted for the heavy duty plastic bags at the store instead. now, because we are creatures of habit, people still can't say no to those plastic bags. san francisco was the first city in the nation to get rid of single use plastic bags in 2007. in 2014, the rest of the state would also ban the so called urban tumbleweed. >> overnight, like at our recycling facility, pier 96, it's like plastic bags just went away and they were no longer a problem. >> people began embracing the concept of bring your own reusable bag to the market. the law did allow for stores to offer paper or heavy duty plastic bags, but only if they were considered reusable. but then, because of the fear of spreading the coronavirus for a short period of time, any bags brought from home were not allowed. >> so during the pandemic, we stopped bringing our own reusable bags to the store, and that was important to protect public health. both ourselves as
4:33 pm
shoppers, but also to the workers at the stores. >> the problem now is that some people are having a hard time giving up those heavy duty plastic bags is a good thing or not so much so that they don't mind paying extra to use, in some cases, lots of them. >> lots of them do you? okay. >> so why not bring your bag? >> i'll try. i'll try to remember that. >> so. so are these how much did you have to pay for these bags? >> i'm not sure. i don't know. >> $0.10. right here. >> oh, really? >> i think so. the plastic industry claims these heavy duty plastic bags can be reused up to 125 times. that's how, by law, they are allowed to be called reusable. they're not necessarily being used as much as the industry claims that they can be, and they are ending up in our landfills. what do you do with those bags after you're
4:34 pm
done with them? >> actually, i got a stack of them at the house sometime. i use them just different things like do you ever throw them away ? >> yes, once in a while you'll find people who say they do use them over and over again. would you say that you use it? 125 times? >> yes. yes, i do. >> so here's how they are allowed. despite the ban on plastic bags, number one, they have to be at least 40% post-consumer material and can be reused. 125 times is not it 100? not 150, but 125 times? i have no idea how they came up with that number. each bag must be able to carry 22 pounds at a distance of 175ft or 125 times. so for the purpose of this experiment, i'm going to go from point a to point b. 125 times
4:35 pm
how many? here you go, 20 to go tot. >> that s it. >> you can still use it. >> it's reusable. >> oh, it just broke at 125 of oh. i'm the one who was not reusable at the moment. >> i do think california needs to take a look at that law and make adjustments and do what it was intended to do, which was to do away with all plastic bags kind of thick and or thin. >> but there is little incentive to do so coming from supermarket
4:36 pm
sits and pharmacies because they are allowed to keep the proceeds from the sale of each bag in 2020. san francisco new charge $0.10 wasn't enough to keep people from buying them. so the city increased the fee to $0.25 per bag. does it bother you that it's $0.25 per bag? i have we're in san francisco and we're in california for. >> so it just used to it i just i don't think about it because it's about convenience. >> now, the oakland city council is considering an ordinance that goes beyond plastic bags. it would ban every kind of single use plastic such as plastic forks, knives, spoons that are typically used with takeout orders, don't ask me if i did it 125 times because you know. you know the answer. of course i did it. >> and the bag lasted exactly 125. you couldn't plan for that? >> no way. predicted that. >> yeah, you did that on the hottest day. yeah. this week. yeah. >> thank you very much. >> thank you for that

government workers to say. sarah huckabee sanders signed an executive order yesterday saying enough of trying to erase women and girls. >> they're using nonsense words to erase women and girls and more importantly, to erase our voices and our experiences. today say we're taking a stand against woke nonsense. >> the banner phrases include pregnant person, human milk, birthing person and alternate spellings of the word woman. okay, well, thankfully, we have several ladies as part of this. fought for this sit this one out, julie, and you can weigh in, too. but your thoughts on this? >> well, i mean, she really knows how to stir the pot, right? i mean, she banned latinx two and you knew there would be a ton of pushback like the aclu is saying it's divisive. and, you know, not just, you, not just for our women girls, but also just erasing marginalized other marginalized groups. so i

mean, isn't it i don't know anybody really surprised hearing this from there. i don't. i'm not. >> but yes. sandhya, your thoughts? you know, i mean, human milk, like, what else would you feed your kids? i mean, it's breast milk. i don't know. i mean, it doesn't i don't hear it here. obviously, it's happening in arkansas. but yeah, it's kind of crazy. and for her just to ban it and it's only with the government workers, but still, you know, she could just say these are things i prefer you not to say, but to make it an overall whole thing. you know, if somebody says it out loud, do they get fired? you know? yeah, no, i agree with you. prefer would have probably been the better way. >> and to hold a press conference to announce that. yeah. like is this really what the taxpayer dollars you know want to be doing and the questions were how much was it being used and how many instances and was it really necessary? >> three. >> exactly. okay well, thankfully we are here in the beautiful state of california
