two americans held hostage by hamas are released. the pleas coming tonight from desperate parents hoping their loved ones will also be set free. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thank you for joining us. hamas released two american hostages today. a mother and daughter from the chicago area. judith and natalie raanan are dual us and israeli citizens and were visiting relatives. they were handed over to israeli forces and taken to a military base to be reunited with their family. they're now under the care of israeli

defense forces. natalie is just 17. her father tonight said he talked with her on the phone for a couple of minutes. and just as you can understand, cannot wait to see her again. >> i did not sleep at night and my head always been in israel. lots of phone calls in israel, lots of tvs. i've been glued to the tv for two weeks hoping for good news. finally it came. >> finally, yuri raanan says his daughter told him she and her mother were treated well while they were held captive. there are still roughly 200 hostages being held by hamas and other militant groups. qatar egypt and other countries are among those working to get them released. but more than 5500 people have died in the violence so far. that number includes those who died in the deadly blast at a hospital in gaza. a border crossing from gaza into egypt remains closed because of damage by airstrikes. and egypt is working to repair the crossing,

which would allow humanitarian aid to flow into gaza. >> locally, activists gathered at the san francisco federal building for one of many national protests today in solidarity with the palestinian people. this one was called stop the gaza genocide. it was organized by the us campaign for palestinian rights. they painted a road mural and called on people to contact their members of congress to demand a ceasefire and de-escalation. an protests will also take place across dozens of states over the weekend at stanford university, a couple hundred people showed up for a rally in support of the palestinian people. they're calling for specialized resources for palestinian american students and demanding stanford divest from companies or organizations that support israel. >> governor newsom made a brief stop in israel today on his way to china. his trip comes on the heels of a visit by new york's governor, kathy hochul. so why are state governors venturing into international war zones? as abc seven news reporter tara campbell explains to some experts, their motivation is

crystal clear. the ruins of war on display nearly two weeks into the israeli hamas war. >> governor gavin newsom on the ground at a tel aviv medical center visiting with california families impacted by the war. his office sharing these photos friday in a statement saying, i listened to the grief and terror in a mother's voice as she spoke about her son, a californian, right now being held hostage in gaza. that mother, rachel goldberg, and father john poland, spoke about their son, hirsch, on cnn. he was born in berkeley. >> we know that hirsch was last seen with an arm freshly blown off being taken captive. he is our primary interest, but of course, we're humans. we're parents. we're children of parents. and we care about all of the 200 hostages. >> governor newsom also meeting with a girl from los angeles who was shot in the leg by hamas and left for dead. >> i'm grateful that the

digit drop in temperatures today so it was definitely noticeable tomorrow morning. gray and drizzly temperatures in the 50s at noon time. you're in the 60s. a mix of sun and clouds. it's going to be a breezy afternoon. those numbers ranging from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. so our cooling trend is going to continue. and then those temperatures will continue to drop off as the sun goes down. and guess what else is coming our way? a system is developing in the pacific and it is going to bring us weekend showers live. doppler seven is tracking that system. i'll be back with the timeline of what part of your weekend will be wet. alma >> all right. thank you, sandra. new at 11. a san jose police officer critically injured when she was ambushed and shot by a suspect in august. is finally out of the hospital this video was shared today of the female officer being wheeled out. as you see with her colleagues applauding her along the way. according to the police department, the officer went through six major surgeries after suffering numerous internal injuries. as she eventually stands up with the

help of a cane. the suspect in her shooting was arrested after getting into a standoff. and also new at 11, a bay area native and former major league baseball player is under arrest, accused of killing his father in law and severely injuring his mother in law. 49 year old danny serafini along with the woman, were arrested this morning in nevada. the shooting happened in 2021, in homewood, which is in the north lake tahoe area. the placer county sheriff's office released surveillance video showing one of the suspects running and a second video with the suspect walking along a path near the lake. serafini went to sarah high school in san mateo and played for several teams, including the giants, for a brief stint at the san jose mayor, matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address tomorrow since taking office. >> he's laid out a vision for what he'd like to see the bay area's most populous city do to improve. abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez with what people are telling us that they want to hear from the mayor.

>> san jose mayor matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address on saturday. >> there are literally hundreds of things that we want to do, but there are a few things we must do this year. >> mehan plans to focus on four goals in his speech reducing crime, ending homelessness for folks on the street, cleaning up san jose and improving investment opportunities. >> i'm very proud of the progress we've made this year. it reducing unsheltered homelessness in fact, the number of people living outside on our streets is down 10% year over year. and we're just getting started with progress. >> there's also room for improvement. a homeless advocate shared his thoughts on what the mayor does. >> well, what i like about what mehan has done is he's treated this like the crisis. it is it is a humanitarian crisis and he's gone after it. guadalupe village is transitional housing went up arena hotel. some of the successors to the throne property. >> but todd langton said homeless abatements or sweeps are something that needs work. you can't just post the poster

and say, hey, you got to be out of here in a week or two. >> you need to have to other parts of that abatement. they've got to have somewhere to go. and the bottom line is there's plenty of land in santa clara county and there's plenty of money. we just have to have more public will and stand up and do the right thing. >> one area the city invests in is the vision zero program, which aims to cut down on traffic deaths. a member from the silicon valley bike coalition said this past year she's seen more city investment in individual neighborhoods, but more funding could be put to good use. >> we need more funding for all of our priority is the truth is we never have as many resources as we would like. and right now the things we must first do is ensure that our neighborhoods are safe, that they are clean, that everyone one lives in doors and has at least safe, dignified shelter. >> mayhem's address at noon is open to the public at san jose community college in san jose.

lauren martinez, abc seven news and also in the south bay. >> new at 11 a new oversight committee has been assigned to the san jose bart extension. the watchdog group becomes or comes as construction has fallen years behind schedule and has become one of the nation's priciest transportation projects. vta officials recently announced the santa clara extension would cost an estimated. $12.2 billion more than twice the initial estimate. the san jose bart line is now expected to open in 2036, a decade behind schedule in the north bay. >> the town of yountville is under a precautionary notice to boil water samples from a treatment plant tested positive for e coli today. they came from the town's main water source, rector reservoir. it's the second boil water notice this year after one was set for three days in july. locals say they've been stocking up on water bottles for the coming days. the city also set up a safe to drink water filling station at fire

station 12. san francisco police responded earlier after a truck hit four cars and struck a pedestrian, then crashed into a building. it happened near townsend and eighth street. officers say the truck's driver was involved in a hit and run and took off from the scene. the truck went on to hit an unoccupied vehicle. two more occupied vehicles and a pedestrian before ramming into that building. everyone involved with the crashes sustained nonlife threatening injuries. the driver of the truck was detained for questioning. >> a lot more to come this friday night. a mom mental mess at an airbnb rental in san francisco and hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage. who the host says needs to pay. >> use botox or pay visits to the plastic surgeon's office frequently. why your personal information could be at risk. also here, it's more than just a halloween display. >> why this? this particular one has special meaning for a south bay family. that's when abc7 news continues

they're flooding my house. water coming from every crevice. opening every light fixture for an airbnb host gets stuck with a monstrous mess. >> and bill, after getting flooded out by some guests. she also has nowhere to live because of it. abc7 news reporter suzanne thorne has her story. >> so this is the toilet that it caused the damage. you can still see the baby wipe. >> it's hard to believe that a clogged and broken toilet could have caused so much damage. >> it was the toilet that had been broken and running over for 15 plus hours. >> erika gemser and her husband, who are expecting their first child any day now, were forced to move out of their home in the mission district six months ago. their house is still unfixed.

>> there was no kitchen, no bathrooms that could be usable. gemser is an airbnb host. >> a march 15th, four guests signed on to stay at her upstairs unit in the mission district for a month. >> they had actually left the evening of april 13th prison assumably right before or right after this clog started, gemser lived in the unit directly downstairs. >> she didn't see any red flags until it was too late. >> water coming from every crevice opening. every light fixture. >> gemser immediately called airbnb, who then told her to get a full estimate and receipts for the repairs to her home. she says the extent of the damage made it impossible to get a quick assessment. >> i tried to explain this to airbnb like this is not a this is not a broken door. this isn't furniture. >> gemser says it took weeks for airbnb's investigative plumber to arrive and determine the cause of the clogged toilet. >> three of those things happening. it's the feces. it's the baby wipes that they probably use the entire 30 days

that they were there. and the trying to relieve of the clog by messing with the tank. >> gemser estimates that the damages and the losses add up to about $300,000. she says she's disappointed by airbnb's coverage policy for hosts. >> they advertise it as the $3 million host protection guarantee. so the idea is, as a host, we've got you covered. top to bottom with $3 million of coverage. so don't worry. we got you. turns out 90% of that is not covered. so they've given me an offer of around $31,000. >> gemser believes she was fully covered between airbnb's host coverage and her own homeowner's insurance. >> turns out that's not the case. so for people who are thinking about being hosts, look into all the different insurance you can buy. buy all of it. buy all of it. >> an airbnb just got back to us and released this statement, quote, we take air cover requests incredibly seriously, including in this case where we tried to send a third party investigator to review the damage, but the host declined. state that her homeowner's insurance company was supporting

her with the damage as well as temporary accommodation. still we offer to pay the loss of her bookings. her insurance deductible and additional reimbursement as a gesture of goodwill. we've been in continuous contact with the hosts, including speaking today to continue to support her. i reached out to gemser for a response. she says much of it is untrue, too. she also says she has 60 emails with a third party investigator trying to get him to come out to review the damage . in the newsroom, suzanne fawn, abc seven news. >> well, it seems like there's always a new scam, right? well, the fbi issued a fraud alert to the public, warning that hackers are targeting plastic surgery offices and their patients. they've been using tech to disguise their phone numbers and emails in phishing scams to send out malware to offices from there, they collect private health information and photos. they use that data as leverage for extortion. they contact plastic surgeons asking for payment to prevent sharing all of their protected health information. well, after 12

hours of negotiate in san francisco, teachers and the school district struck a deal today, stopping the possibility of the city's first teacher strike since 1979. the proposal includes $9,000 in salary increases for teachers for this school year and an additional 5% raise for next school year. the tentative agreement also includes worker protections and higher compensation for paraeducators. >> the big joy for me is that we were able to avoid a strike and we were able to kind of find a middle ground that really prioritized student learning and student outcomes as well as what our educators need. >> the deal will also likely help fund a $1 billion school bond that would be used to improve san francisco's schools. >> let's take a live look now at capitol hill, where the house still remains without a speaker after a chaotic day. ohio representative jim jordan is now forced out of the speaker race after losing for the third time. republicans held a secret ballot afterward where they revoked

background, the marine layer just surging in. that's what brought the big cool down today. you can see it, the marine layer is about 2000ft deep. this is a live view from our tam cam. and we are noticing the drop off in the temperatures compared to 24 hours ago, 11 degrees cooler in san jose right now, down seven in santa rosa for today's high temperatures were only in the 60s to 80s compared to yesterday's record heat, 50s and 60s. right now as we check out a live view from live doppler seven, we certainly have plenty of cloud cover around and we're going to see a lot more cloud cover tomorrow as this system continues to send us some clouds. a trough is going to drop down behind it and that's what's going to bring in some wet weather for your sunday pier 39 camera. it's a lovely view. certainly clouds out there, cooling continues this weekend. showers coming in sunday. dry and warmer start early next week before those temperatures drop. some more. now, the beach hazards statement that is in effect right now for the coastline will remain up until 2

a.m. increased risk of rip currents remain in place. as we look at your morning temperatures in the 50s, you might run into some patchy drizzle out there. in addition to the fog and the clouds. so be aware of that tomorrow afternoon when you're looking at filtered sunshine mid 60s to mid 70s and it is going to be breezy for your saturday. sunday is when a level one system comes in with those scattered showers. watch out for slippery roads, breezy conditions and there's a slight possibility of thunder hour by hour. the timeline showing you when that wet weather gets here, it's 7 a.m. sunday light to moderate showers moving in. you will notice that 9 a.m. still coming through the bay area. and then the next wave comes through sunday night, way into late sunday night is how long we're expecting the rain to last. this is beneficial from a fire danger perspective around this time of year. any time we can add more moisture to the fuels, it helps out rainfall. estimates have gone up from earlier today. so, yes, it's only a hundredth of an inch in san jose, but up to a half an inch in some of our
