they mayor matt mehan is getting ready for his first state of the city address, or what he's expected to outline in today's speech as the community shares their input. good morning to you. it is saturday, october 21st. i'm gloria rodriguez. and we'll get to that story in a bit. but first, meteorologist drew tuma is in for lisa argen this morning. and drew, i know we were talking about how nice the weather was last week, you know warm but now it looks like we are finally shifting towards that fall weather. >> should we call it back to reality, so to speak? we had that warm weather for much of last week. the cooler air moved in here yesterday and that continues today. here's a live look this morning. our emeryville camera showing you the western span or sorry, the eastern span, rather, of the bay bridge and you can see it's very quiet out there. this morning. we'll take a look at temperatures. some of our coolest spots beginning in the 40s around the bay shoreline. we're in the mid 50s. we do have a bit of fog in the north bay novato is the problem spot coming in at half a mile right now. elsewhere we are doing a

okay. so it's a mix of sun and clouds today. temperatures a bit below average. we're mainly in the mid 60s to the low 70s by about 4 p.m. today. tomorrow though, things are going to change. you can see by sunday we bring in the level one storm impact scale. we are tracking scattered showers. we'll go hour by hour. show you that wet weather, gloria coming up in just a few minutes. all right. >> thank you so much, drew. happening today, san jose mayor matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address. crime, homelessness and clean streets are some of the items on his checklist. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez tells us what the community hopes to hear from the mayor. >> san jose mayor matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address on saturday. >> there are literally hundreds of things that we want to do, but there are a few things we must do this year. >> mehan plans to focus on four goals in his speech reduce crime, ending homelessness for folks on the street, cleaning up san jose and improving investment opportunities. >> i'm very proud of the

progress we've made this year. it reduced unsheltered homelessness. in fact, the number of people living outside on our streets is down 10% year over year. and we're just getting started with progress. >> there's also room for improvement. a homeless advocate shared his thoughts on what the mayor does. >> well, what i like about what mehan has done is he's treated this like the crisis. it is it is a humanitarian crisis and he's gone after it. guadalupe village transitional housing went up. arena hotel. some of the successes, the property. >> but todd langton said homeless abatements or sweeps are something that needs work. >> you can't just post the poster and say, hey, you got to be out of here in a week or two. you need to have two other parts of that abatement and they've got to have somewhere to go. and the bottom line is there's plenty of land in santa clara county and there's plenty of money. we just have to have more public will and stand up and do the right thing. >> one area the city invests in is the vision zero program,

which aims to cut down on traffic deaths. a member from the silicon valley bike coalition said this past year she's seen more city investment in individual neighborhoods, but more funding could be put to good use. >> we need more funding for all of our priorities. the truth is we never have as many resources as we would like, and right now, the things we must do is ensure that our neighborhoods are safe, that they are clean, that everyone lives indoors and has at least safe. dignified shelter means address at noon is open to the public at san jose community college in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> new at six a deadly motorcycle crash is causing major backups on highway 101. >> in mountain view. this is near the san antonio road exit near the shoreline amphitheater. authorities are still on the scene right now. all four lanes are blocked out. new video this morning shows a jeep and a

motorcycle were involved. it is not clear right now who passed away in that crash. and new this morning, the first trucks carrying water, food and medicine passed through the rafah crossing from egypt into gaza overnight night. the convoy was the first humanitarian aid to arrive to the area since the war erupted. the rafah crossing was only open for a brief time period to allow the trucks to pass through. it's not certain when it will reopen. hamas released two american hostages, a mother and daughter from the chicago area, judith and natalie raanan are dual us and israeli citizens and they were visiting relatives. they were handed over to israeli forces and taken to a military base to be reunited with family members. they are now under the care of israeli defense forces, as natalie is just 70 teen. her father said that he talked to her on the phone for a couple of minutes and cannot wait to see her again. >> i did not sleep at night and

my head always been in israel. lots of phone calls in israel, lots of tvs. i've been glued to the tv for two weeks hoping for good news. finally it came and he says his daughter told him that she and her mother were treated well while they were held captive. >> there are still roughly 210 hostage being held by hamas and other militant groups. qatar, egypt and other countries are among those working to get them released. the president says that ten americans remain unaccounted for more than 5500 people have died in the violence , including those who died in a deadly blast at a hospital in gaza. governor gavin newsom made a brief stop in israel on his way to china. the trip comes on the heels of a visit by new york's governor. so the question is, why are state governors venturing into international war zones? as abc7 news reporter

tara campbell explains, some experts believe their motivation is crystal clear. >> the ruins of war on display for nearly two weeks into the israeli hamas war. governor gavin newsom on the ground at a tel aviv medical center visiting with california families impacted by the war. his office sharing these photos friday in a statement saying, i listened to the grief and terror in a mother's voice as she spoke about her son, a californian, right now being held hostage in gaza. that mother, rachel goldberg and father john poland, spoke about their son, hirsch, on cnn. he was born in berkeley. >> we know that hirsch was last seen with an arm freshly blown off being taken captive. he is our primary interest, but of course, we're humans. we're parents. we're children of parents. and we care about all of the 200 hostages as governor newsom also meeting with a girl from los angeles who was shot in

the leg by hamas and left for dead. >> and i'm grateful that the governor is visiting israel and talking to the families. >> state senator scott wiener is co-chair of the california legislative jewish caucus. >> there's a long relationship between california and israel with sister city relationships and so i think it's good for the governor to show that that relationship continues. >> new york governor kathy hochul, also in israel this week. >> this was a never forget moment. the world can never forget the barbarism and how unsafe, civilized and savage these attacks were. >> political science expert professor steve wolpert says he's not surprised by either of these visits, particularly newsom's as well. >> he was on his way to china and i think it was an opportune time for him to represent, if you will, the large number of arab americans in california. we

in 2021, in homewood, and that's in the north lake tahoe area. the placer county sheriff's office released surveillance video. it shows one of the suspects running and a second video with a suspect walking along a path near the lake. seraphine went to sierra high school in san mateo and played for several teams, including the giants for a brief stint. now to a chaotic scene in san francisco. police say that a driver was first involved in a hit and run. and while he was trying to get away, he hit two cars. a pedestrian then crashed into a fairly well known furniture store in san francisco. everybody involved with the crashes ended up having non-life-threatening injuries as it all happened at the balboa store. that's at townson and in eighth street. the driver of the truck was detained for questioning. happening today, a community festival to showcase san francisco's civic pride. it's being held as part of a $4

drink water filling station that is at fire station 12. an airbnb host is stuck with a mess. and bill, after getting flooded out by some guests. she also has nowhere to live because of it. abc's seven news reporter suzanne phan has her story. >> so this is the toilet that caused the damage. you can still see the baby wipe. >> it's hard to believe that a clogged and broken toilet could have caused so much damage. >> it was the toilet that had been broken in and running over for 15 plus hours. >> erica gemser and her husband, who are expecting their first child any day now, were forced to move out of their home in the mission district six months ago. their house is still unfixed. >> there was no kitchen, no bathrooms that could be usable. >> gemser is an airbnb host, a march 15th for guests signed on to stay at her upstairs unit in the mission district for a month. >> they had actually left the evening of april 13th, presumably right before or right after this clog started. >> gemser lived in the unit

directly downstairs. she didn't see any red flags until it was too late. >> water coming from every crevice opening every light fixture. gemser immediately called airbnb, who then told her to get a full estimate and receipts for the repairs to her home. >> she says the extent of the damage made it impossible to get a quick assessment. >> i tried to explain this to airbnb like this is not a this is not a broken door. this isn't furniture. >> gemser says it took weeks for airbnb's investigative plumber to arrive and determine the cause of the clogged toilet. >> three of those things happening. it's the feces. it's the baby wipes that they probably use the entire 30 days that they were there. an and the trying to relieve of the clog by messing with the tank. >> gemser estimates that the damages and the losses add up to about $300,000. she says she's disappointed by airbnb coverage policy for hosts. >> they advertise it as the $3 million host protection guarantee. so the idea is, as a host, we've got you covered. top

to bottom with $3 million of coverage. so don't worry. we got you. turns out 90% of that is not covered. so they've given me an offer of around $31,000. >> gemser believes she was fully covered between airbnb's host coverage and her own homeowner's insurance. >> turns out that's not the case. so for people who are thinking about being host, look into all the different insurance you can buy. buy all of it. buy all of it. >> an airbnb just got back to us and released this statement. quote, we take air cover requests incredibly seriously, including in this case where we tried to send a third party investigator to review the damage, but the host declined, stating that her homeowner's insurance company was supporting her with the damage, as well as temporary accommodation. still, we offered to pay the loss of her bookings, her insurance deductible and additional reimbursement as a gesture of goodwill. we've been in continuous contact with the hosts, including speaking today to continue to support her. i reached out to gemser for a response. she says much of it is untrue. she also says she has 60

emails with a third party investigator trying to get him to come out to review the damage in the newsroom. suzanne phan. abc seven news. >> all right, suzanne, thank you so much. after 12 hours of negotiation, the san francisco teachers and the school district struck a deal, stopping the possibility of the city's first teacher strike since 1979. the proposal includes a $9,000 salary increase for teachers for the school year and an additional 5% raise for the next school year. the tentative agreement also includes worker protections and higher compensation for para educators. the big joy for me is that we were able to avoid a strike and we were able to kind of find a middle ground that really prioritized student learning and student outcomes as well as what our educators need. the deal will also likely help fund a $1 billion school bond that would be used to improve san francisco schools. happening today, the city of vallejo will honor bay

month's asia pacific economic cooperation summit. also known as apec. but heavy security during the event will close muni lines leading to chinatown. an abc seven news reporter, ryan curry shows us how chinatown plans to overcome this obstacle. all. for a vibrant chinatown down on friday with locals and tourists crowding the streets, leaders in this community hope it looks even busier once apec starts in november. >> it's a world known gathering, so the whole world is going to be looking at san francisco this week, sfmta announced numerous street closures and public transit changes to make apec as secure as possible. >> part of those security measures could limit access to chinatown on friday, chinatown leaders met with sfmta to talk about how to limit the impact on tourism. despite the changes, all the regular routes that might be in that area are going

to be rerouted. this line built with the intention of making it easier for people to access chinatown. but with one of the biggest conferences coming to san francisco in decades, this line won't be running sfmta has to make adjustments. >> we'll be able to run high frequency tsay shuttle trains between union square market street station and chinatown. this is very important for us to make sure we maintain strong connectivity to chinatown in addition to that, sfmta will send text messages, emails and public notices to let people know of the changes. >> lee, with the chinatown merchants association says they need to make sure anyone traveling from apec to chinatown is aware of the alternate routes she envisions. a lot of people at apec touring the rest of the city, and they're going to have a cable car over at moscone center, where people can take pictures. >> so there that can remind them and say, yeah, come on over to visit the rest of the city, she says apec could bring thousands of people to chinatown, a big boost to the local businesses.

totally fine. it's tomorrow that we are tracking some rain moving through with a level one storm on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale this morning. here's a live look from the tam cam. it is quiet to ■begin your saturday chilly in parts of the north bay. our valleys are in the 40s around the bay shoreline. we're starting out our saturday in the 50s. we're seeing a bit of improvement when it comes to fog. our visibility has increased around novato where it was quite low just about a half hour ago as we head throughout the day, it's a blend of sun and clouds heading into the afternoon and you'll find those temperatures below average. that cooler air rushed in here yesterday to break our warm spell on that. cooler weather continues today. so we'll find temperatures mainly in the mid 60s to the mid 70s under a blend of sun and clouds. we'll track that wet weather. gloria will go hour by hour on future weather time out your sunday coming up in just a few minutes. >> sounds good. thank you, drew. the situation in the middle east continues to escalate late, but there is some good news to report today. two americans who were held hostage by hamas are expected to arrive in the us

soon as abc news reporter liz landers tells us us authorities are working to bring other americans who are being held hostage back home. >> a glimmer of good news from the horrific war between israel and hamas as two americans will be heading home after being freed from hamas captivity. >> we welcome the release as the two hostages identified as judith ronan, 59 years old and her daughter, natalie ronan, 17, both from illinois, are now back in israel and expected to return to the united states by next week. >> natalie's father says his daughter is doing good. >> her i love you. i miss you very much. and i hope for the release of the other hostages. >> president joe biden spoke with them by phone, offering full us support. meanwhile at least ten more americans are still being held hostage alongside 200 or more other people, says the secretary of state, who assured the public their release is a top priority.

>> the urgent work to free every single american, to free all other hostages continues, as does our work to secure the safe passage out of gaza. for the americans who are trapped there. >> thousands of people have been killed and injured in both israel and gaza since hamas attacked israel two weeks ago. an israeli forces are expected to invade gaza and a ground incursion in at any time. and this morning, hope for millions of people trapped inside gaza as trucks loaded with humanitarian aid were seen passing the rafah crossing at the border between egypt and gaza. a deal negotiated by the us, israel and egypt to deliver critical supplies like medicine, food and water. egypt's president has agreed to allow the rafah border crossing to continue to operate in a sustained manner so that humanitarian aid gets safely into gaza. in washington, liz landers, abc news. >> and closer to home, activists gathered at the san francisco federal building for one of many

national protests in solidarity with the palestinian people. the protest was called stop the gaza genocide. it was organized by the us campaign for palestinian rights. they painted a road mural and called on people to contact their members of congress to demand a cease fire and de-escalation. protests will also take place across dozens of states over the weekend at stanford university, hundreds of people showed up in support of the palestinian people. they are calling for specialized resources for palestinian american students, and they're also demanding that stanford divert east from companies or organizations that support israel. the san francisco restaurant in the historic cafe house is being sued and facing eviction in a lawsuit was filed this week against the operator of cafe house restaurant in chinatown. it alleges that they've had trouble paying rent since 2020, and they stopped paying rent in november of last year. and now the owner of the

property says that more than $220,000 is owed in back pay. they issued a notice to pay or vacate by october 11th. one week prior to the lawsuit, another walgreens is set to close in downtown san francisco. so this time blocks away from union square. this is video of the store from earlier this year. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, the location on 500 geary street at the intersection of taylor street is closed on november 15th. this is the third walgreens to close in the city in less than two years as the cause of the closure is not known. this morning. a currently operates about 40 stores in in san francisco developing news from capitol hill. ohio represents jim jordan is out of the running for the speakership this morning. he lost a third vote of the full house and then a secret ballot amongst the gop ousted jordan as their nominee.

abc news reporter rachel scott tells us what's next. jim jordan forced out of the race for house speaker. >> it all came down to a secret closed door vote for members of his own party said enough is enough. do you believe that anyone can unite this conference ? i do. >> i do. i've just got to figure out who that is. >> the republican from ohio rejected on the house floor for the third time this week. 25 members of his own party opposing him, up from 20 on tuesday. fitzpatrick mchenry heading into the vote. jordan appearing confident. how many you think that we need to get speaker out of the meeting but even his own supporters didn't see a path forward. >> the votes are absolutely not changing that. that is a fact you can take to the grave. >> i don't think the lord jesus himself could get the 20-17 with this conference when that secret ballot was called behind closed doors on whether to keep jordan as their nominee, 112 of his gop colleagues said it was time to

move on. >> he's out. >> what do you think? he's out. >> republican is now back to the drawing board with a lot at stake. the unfolding israeli war with hamas. president biden asking for more than $100 billion in foreign aid to defend israel and to not forget ukraine . but congress can't approve the funding without a speaker of the house. >> it's astonishing to me and we are in a very bad position as a party. i'm concerned about where we go from here. >> that was abc's rachel scott. republicans acknowledge that this is an embarrassing setback. several members announced they plan to run for the speaker of the house, including the number three republican congressman tom emmer. a new oversight committee has been assigned to the san jose bart extension. the watchdog group comes as construction has fallen years behind schedule and has become one of the nation's priciest transportation projects. vta officials recently announced the santa clara extension would cost an estimated $12.2 billion.

that's more than twice the initial estimate. the san jose bart line is now expected to open in 2036. that's a decade behind schedule. l san jose police officer who was shot and injured in an ambush in august is finally out of the hospital. this video was shared of the officer being wheeled out as her colleagues applauded her along the way. so touching and according to the police department, the officer went through six major surgeries after suffering numerous internal injuries and eventually she was able to stand up with the help of a cane. the suspect in her shooting was arrested after getting into a standoff. and you could see her right there walking. so really good news there. well, after the break, poachers on the peninsula. how rideshare services are being used more often when it comes to illegally catching dungeness crabs. let's get a live look outside this

lighthouse it is looking gorgeous this morning. and the water there, such a nice day. so we'll get a check of that forecast with drew coming up. new this morning, federal regulators approved new rules aimed at reducing air pollution emitted by large ships in ports across the state. the original at birth regulations by the california air resources board forced large cargo ships and cruise liners to plug into the local power grid to cut down on emissions. the new rules foster

an oil tankers, chemical tankers and car carrying ships. officials say that tankers and car carriers emit 56% of all air pollution from ships moored in calif, virginia. there is a new effort in the battle against climate change. a technology out of iceland is removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere there. the technology uses filters and fans to take co2 and send it deep underground, where it fuzes with basalt. that's a porous rock that traps the carbon. the reason that that sort of considered a gold standard for carbon removal is that once that has solidified into rock, it's going to stay there. >> you know, the interesting thing when i was there is this filter and fan system does mean that if you're standing right at the point where it's captured for that brief period of time, you're actually breathing air that is equivalent in terms of how much co2 it has to what the air was like 200, 250 years ago. >> and you can learn all about this new technology in nat geo's

getting ready for halloween. going to the pumpkin patch today. is it a good day to do that? yeah, today is a good day to do it. >> we are totally quiet and dry today. tomorrow we'll track those showers with a cold front moving onshore this morning. what a lovely view from our mount tam cam showing you. it is quiet out there. a few clouds on the horizon. we'll find those clouds increasing as we head into the afternoon as that cold front gets closer to us. that will bring about those scattered showers tomorrow. it's a level one on the storm impact scale for sunday. temperatures today and tomorrow below average. but we're drier and we're warmer by early next week. in fact, much of next week is very quiet. some of our coolest temperatures right now in the north bay. we have a lot of 40s from san rafael to santa rosa, napa, waking up to 49 degrees. clear lake. good morning. you are cool at 46 degrees around the bay shoreline in in most areas outside of the north bay. we're starting out in the mid 50s to the low 60s. here's a lovely view from the golden gate bridge. we are fog free from this vantage point. we'll start out with a lot of sunshine that sun is up here. in about 30

minutes, we'll find those clouds increasing throughout the day for a mix of sun and clouds. this afternoon and temperatures in the 60s and 70s, which is a few degrees below average for this time of the year. looking at highs in oakland, 68 today under that blend of sun and cloud 64 in the city or should say half moon bay 67 in the city, 70 in santa rosa, 72 in concord. santa cruz coming in at 67 degrees tonight. it is mostly cloudy and we'll track those showers beginning to move through after midnight tonight. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. this is the area of low pressure, this cloud cover that has a cold front that will push through here early tomorrow morning. and bring us those showers on and off and very light in nature on the abc. seven storm impact scale is a level one storm we have here on sunday. with that front moving through, bringing light scattered showers. his biggest impact, slick roadways throughout the day tomorrow and early in the afternoon. there is the slight chance of thunder. i think that's likely between noon and 2 p.m. that's the chance we could see some lightning, a clap

just everything about it was so exciting. >> ledesma can't share details of the episode they filmed in the spring. it was back in march when a food network casting producer discovered her edible artistry through her instagram page. >> it was a three step interview and during that third interview, i actually had to do a time demonstration for them. >> ledesma thought she bombed one of the final interview questions when they asked her, what do you love about halloween? she immediately thought of her mom. >> she was a single mom. and so for every halloween, she would always come to our schools to dress up, dress us up in costume and take us trick or treating. so as an adult, i could see now that she sacrificed so much to be there for us at that time. ledesma bakes as a hobby. >> she's a mom of five and is currently a student at san jose state, majoring in psychology. she as a young mom, ledesma focused on her children and work . now she's focusing on her education and the creative outlet that allows her to balance it all.
