we'll get to that story in just a little bit. but meteorologist drew tuma is in for lisa argen today. drew thanks for waking up bright and early on saturday to join us. mean look how beautiful it is out there already and we're in store for a really nice start to the weekend. >> we'll have a lot of sunshine early on. here's a live look from our sutro tower camera showing you the golden gate bridge just splashed in that sunshine. we're fog free there. bit of dense fog in novato this morning 4040s and our coolest spots right now but a lot of 50s around the bay shoreline. let's go hour by hour on future weather. today is just a blend of sun and clouds throughout the day we're dry into the afternoon. temperatures is a little bit below average. we had that cooler air rush in here yesterday to break our warm spell and now that cooler air has really settled in so high of 67. in the city today, 68 in oakland, 74 in san jose. but that cloud cover tomorrow will give way to some showers. we'll track our storm to finish out the weekend. it's a level one, a light storm on the storm impact scale. all the details in a few minutes. gloria we definitely

want to know all about that. >> thank you, drew. happening today, san jose mayor matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address. crime, homelessness and clean streets are some of the items on his checklist at abc7 news reporter lauren martinez tells us what the community hopes to hear from the mayor. >> san jose mayor matt mehan will deliver his first state of the city address on saturday. >> there are literally hundreds of things that we want to do, but there are a few things we must do this year. >> mehan plans to focus on four goals in his speech reduce crime, ending homelessness for folks on the street, cleaning up san jose and improving investment opportunities. >> i'm very proud of the progress we've made this year at reducing unsheltered homelessness. in fact, at the number of people living outside on our streets is down 10% year over year. and we're just getting started with progress. >> there's also room for improvement. a homeless advocate shared his thoughts on what the mayor does. >> well, what i like about what mehan has done is he's treated this like the crisis. it is it

is a humanitarian crisis and he's gone after it. guadalupe village transitional housing went up. arena hotel. some of the successes, the property. >> but todd langton said homeless abatements or sweeps are something that needs work. >> you can't just post the poster and say, hey, you got to be out of here in a week or two. you need to have two other parts of that abatement and they've got to have somewhere to go in. the bottom line is there's plenty of land in santa clara county and there's plenty of money. we just have to have more public will and stand up and do the right thing. >> one area the city invests in is the vision zero program, which aims to cut down on traffic deaths. a member from the silicon valley bike coalition said this past year she's seen more city investment in individual neighborhoods, but more funding could be put to good use. >> we need more funding for all of our priorities. the truth is we never have as many resources as we would like, and right now, the things we must do is ensure

that our neighborhoods are safe, that they are clean, that everyone lives indoors and has at least safe. dignified shelter means address at noon is open to the public at san jose community college in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> now to a story we've been following for you this morning, highway 101 in mountain view is now open after a deadly motorcycle crash caused major backups this morning. >> it happened near the san antonio road exit near the shoreline amphitheater. authorities were on the scene since two in the morning with the closure of all four lanes that lasted for hours. the video this morning shows a jeep and a motorcycle were involved. it's still unclear who died in that crash. new this morning, the first trucks carrying water, food and medicine passed through the rafah crossing from egypt into gaza overnight. the convoy was the first humanitarian aid

to arrive to the area since the war erupted and the rafah crossing was only open for a brief time period to allow the trucks to pass through. it's not certain when it will reopen. hamas released to american hostages a mother and daughter from the chicago area, judith and natalie raanan are dual us and israeli citizen and they were visiting relatives. they were handed over to israeli forces and taken to a military base to be reunited with family members. they are now under the care of israeli defense forces. natalie is just 17. her father said that he talked to her on the phone for a couple of minutes and cannot wait to see her again. >> i did not sleep at night and my head always been in israel. lots of phone calls in israel, lots of tvs. i've been glued to the tv for two weeks hoping for good news. finally it came. >> he says his daughter told him

that she and her mother were treated well while they were being held captive. there are still roughly 210 hostages is being held by hamas and other militant groups. qatar, egypt and other countries are among those working to get them released. the president says ten americans are unaccounted for, more than 5700 people have died in the violence, including those who died in a deadly blast at a hospital in gaza. governor gavin newsom made a brief stop in israel on his way to china. his trip comes on the heels of a visit by new york's governor. so the question is, why are state governors venturing into international war zones? as abc7 news reporter tara campbell explains, some experts believe their motivation is crystal clear. >> the ruins of war on display for nearly two weeks into the israeli hamas war. governor gavin newsom on the ground at a tel aviv medical center visiting

with california families impacted by the war. his office sharing these photos friday. in a statement saying, i listened to the grief and terror in a mother's voice as she spoke about her son, a calif right now being held hostage in gaza. that mother, rachel goldberg and father john poland, spoke about their son, hirsch, on cnn. he was born in berkeley. we know that hirsch was last seen with an arm freshly blown off being taken captive. >> he is our primary interest, but of course, we're humans. we're parents. we're children of parents. and we care about all of the 200 hostages. >> governor newsom also meeting with a girl from los angeles who was shot in the leg by hamas and left for dead. >> i'm grateful that the governor is visiting israel and talking to the families. >> state senator scott wiener is co-chair of the california legislative jewish caucus. >> there's a long relationship between california and israel

with sister city relationships and so i think it's good for the governor to show, though, that that relationship continues. >> as new york governor kathy hochul, also in israel this week. >> this was a never forget moment. the world can never forget the barbarism and how unsafe, realized and savage these attacks were. >> political science expert professor steve wolpert says he's not surprised by either of these visits, particularly newsom's. >> well, he was on his way to china and i think it was an opportune time for him to represent, if you will, the large number of arab americans in california. we have more than any other state. and the second largest number of jewish people in california, second to new york. >> governor newsom showing on the internet national stage, also raising questions about a potential president bid. >> she's acting like a potential candidate. and not this coming election. but the next one. this

for several major league teams over seven seasons to a chaotic scene in san francisco. police say that a driver was first involved in a hit and run, and while he was trying to get away, he hit two cars. a pedestrian then crashed into a fairly well known furniture store in san francisco. everyone involved ended up having non-life threatening injuries. it happened at the rush store at townsend and eighth street. the driver of the truck was detained for questioning. new this morning, san francisco based dropbox is turning over a quarter of their office space. in a filing, dropbox agreed to surrender more than 165,000ft■!s of space in their mission. bay headquarters. they will also pay $79 million in termination fees. the file hosting company will move its offices out over time until 2025. this comes after the company had widespread layoffs in april. shrink ing their

workforce by 16. firing 500 workers. happening today, a community festival to showcase san francisco civic pride. the event is all part of a $4 million campaign to try to repair the city's image. it's called it all starts here. this weekend is the official launch with cultural performances reflective of the city and the local foods. and it includes music from bay area rapper p-lo. it all starts at 11:00 this morning. it goes until 5 p.m. at the east. cut crossing. that's over at 200 folsom street. everybody's welcome. there will be family friendly activities there as well. and it looks like hopefully it'll be a good day to go to that event or if you're going to be outdoors today. right, drew yeah, it really is going to be a nice day, gloria. >> live look from our santa cruz camera. we do have mainly clear skies to start out our saturday, but that will change as the day

>> so this is the toilet that caused the damage. you can still see the baby wipe. >> it's hard to believe that a clogged and broken toilet could have caused so much damage. >> it was the toilet that had been broken in and running over for 15 plus hours. >> erica gemser and her husband, who are expecting their first child any day now, were forced to move out of their home in the mission district six months ago. their house is still unfixed. >> there was no kitchen, no bathrooms that could be usable. >> gemser is an airbnb host, a march 15th for guests signed on to stay at her upstairs unit in the mission district for a month. >> they had actually left the evening of april 13th, presumably right before or right after this clog started. >> gemser lived in the unit directly downstairs. she didn't see any red flags until it was too late. >> water coming from every crevice opening every light fixture. >> gemser immediately called airbnb, who then told her to get a full estimate and receipts for the repairs to her home. she

says the extent of the damage made it impossible to get a quick assessment out. >> i tried to explain this to airbnb like this is not a this is not a broken door. this isn't furniture. >> gemser says it took weeks for airbnb bnb's investigative plumber to arrive and determine the cause of the clogged toilet. >> three of those things happening. it's the feces. it's the baby wipes that they probably use. the entire 30 days that they were there and the trying to relieve the clog by messing with the tank. >> gemser estimates that the damages and the losses add up to about $300,000. she says she's disappointed by airbnb coverage policy for hosts. >> they advertise it as the $3 million host protection guarantee. so the idea is, as a host, we've got you covered. top to bottom with $3 million of coverage. so don't worry. we got you. turns out 90% of that is not covered. so they've given me an offer of around $31,000. >> gemser believes she was fully covered between airbnb's host coverage and her own homeowner's

insurance. >> turns out that's not the case. so for people who are thinking about being hosts, look into all the different insurance you can buy. buy all of it. buy all of it. >> an airbnb just got back to us and released this statement. quote, we take air cover requests incredibly seriously, including in this case where we tried to send a third party investigator to review the damage, but the host declined, stating that her homeowner's insurance company was supporting her with the damage, as well as temporary accommodation. still, we offered to pay the loss of her bookings, her insurance deductible and additional reimbursement as a gesture of goodwill. we've been in continuous contact with the hosts, including speaking today to continue to support her. i reached out to gemser for a response. she says much of it is untrue. she also says she has 60 emails with a third party investigator trying to get him to come out to review the damage in the newsroom, suzanne phan abc seven news. >> thank you, suzanne. after 12 hours of negotiations, san francisco teachers and the school district struck a deal stopping the possible 8-80 of

the city's first teacher strike since the 1979. the proposal includes a $9,000 salary increase for teachers for this school year and an additional 5% raise for the next school year. the tentative agreement also includes worker protections and higher compensation for paraeducators. the deal will likely help fund a $1 billion school bond that would be used to improve city schools. today, the city of vallejo will honor bay area wrap legend e-40. that's where he was born. earl stevens, which is his real name, will get a key to the city today. on top of his illustrious music career, he has donated to numerous charities in vallejo over the years. a one mile stretch of magazine street is going to be renamed e-40 way as well. e-40 way is a street that he lived on as a kid, and it also made it onto his 2015 album, uh. as a song. very cool. well turning now to

the north bay. a little bit cooler. a slight chill in the air this morning. napa, you're coming in at 49 degrees. here's a live look at pier 39. trying to find any sea lions out there this morning. maybe a bit early for them to be up, but nonetheless, folks are out there enjoying this nice morning with a cup of coffee and getting in the sights. here's how the day looks. we have a lot of sunshine early on giving way to increase cloud cover. this afternoon. and as that cloud cover increases, it's going to limit how warm we get this afternoon. we'll find temperatures a bit below average in the 60s and low 70s. so 68, the high in oakland today. we'll go to 74. in san jose, 67 in the city, 68in napa, 72 in concord, half moon bay, a bit cooler at 64 degrees. mostly cloudy tonight, numbers dropping into the 50s and we'll track those showers moving through after midnight. here's the area of low pressure that pushes a cold front into northern california early tomorrow morning. and that's why we do bring in the exclusive abc7 storm impact scale a level one on your sunday with scattered light showers. the biggest impact will be slick

during next month's asia pacific economic cooperation summit, also known as apec. but heavy security during the event will close will close muni lines heading to chinatown. an abc seven news reporter, ryan curry shows us how chinatown plans to overcome this obstacle. all vibrant chinatown on friday with locals and tourists crowding the streets. >> leaders in this community hope it looks even busier once apec starts in november. it's a world known uh- gathering, so the whole world is going to be looking at san francisco this week. sfmta announced numerous street closures and public transit changes to make apec as secure as possible. part of those security measures could

limit access to chinatown on friday. chinatown leaders met with sfmta to talk about how to limit the impact on tourism. despite the changes. >> all the regular routes that might be in that area are going to be rerouted. >> this line built with the intention of making it easier for people to access chinatown. but with one of the biggest conferences coming to san francisco in decades, this line won't be running. sfmta has to make adjustments. >> we'll be able to run high frequency tsay shuttle trains between union square market street station and chinatown. this is very important for us to make sure we maintain strong connectivity to chinatown in addition to that, sfmta will send text messages, emails and public notices to let people know of the changes. >> lee, with the chinatown merchants association says they need to make sure anyone traveling from apec to chinatown is aware of the alternate routes she envisions. a lot of people at apec touring the rest of the city, and they're going to have

cooler spots in the 40s. but most of us waking up to temperatures right now in the 50s as we go throughout your saturday. it's just a blend of sun and clouds throughout the day. we are dry and temperatures later on this afternoon are a bit below average. will max out in the mid 60s to the lower 70s by about 4:00 pm this afternoon. looking at the three day forecast, changes come our way for the back half of the weekend. it's a level one light storm on the abc seven storm impact scale that will bring us scattered showers. tomorrow we'll go hour by hour time out. this rain chance coming up, gloria in just a few minutes. >> so we'll need those umbrellas. thank you, drew. just hours ago, the rafah border crossing between gaza and egypt reopened briefly with truckloads of humanitarian supplies rolling through the border. 20 trucks led by the egyptian red crescent moved into gaza, bringing with them desperately needed food, water and medicine. the agreement to temporarily open the border was brokered by president biden and the president of egypt earlier this week, but it faced repeated delays with israeli airstrikes

and concerns of who would inspect the aid crossing, causing nearly 4000 tons of aid to pile up. on the egyptian side . now it starts to move in and the need has never been greater. >> so these trucks are not just trucks. they are a lifeline. they are the difference between life and death for so many people in gaza, more than 1400 people in israel have been killed while the death toll in gaza has risen to nearly 4000 people closer to home activists gathered at the san francisco federal building for one of many national protests in solidarity with the palestinian people. >> the protest was called stop the gaza genocide. it was organized by the us campaign for palestinian rights. they painted a road mural and also called on people to contact their members of congress to demand a cease fire and de-escalation in

protests will take place across dozens of states over the weekend. at stanford university, hundreds of people showed up for a rally in support of the palestinian people. they are calling for specialized resources for palestinian american students, and they're also demanding that stanford divest from companies or organizations that support israel. the san francisco restaurant in the historic cafe house is being sued and is facing eviction in a lawsuit was filed this week against the operator of cafe house restaurant in chinatown. it alleges that they've had trouble paying rent since 2020 and that they stopped paying rent in november of last year. and now the owner of the property says that more than $220,000 is owed in back pay. they issued a notice to pay or baker by october 11th. that's one week prior to the lawsuit suit. another walgreens is set to close in downtown san francisco, and this time it's blocks away from union square. we have video

of the store from earlier this year. according to our media partners at the san francisco standard, the location on 500 geary street at the intersection of taylor street is closing on november 15th. this is the third walgreens to close in the city in less than two years. the cause of the closure is not known this morning. it currently operates about 40 stores in san francisco. develop news from capitol hill. ohio rep resentative jim jordan is out of the running for the speakership this morning. he lost a third vote of the full house and then a secret ballot amongst the gop ousted jordan as their nominee. abc news reporter rachel scott tells us what's next. >> jim jordan forced out of the race for house speaker. it all came down to a secret closed door vote where members of his own party said enough is enough. do you believe that anyone can unite this conference? >> i do. i do. i've just got to figure out who that is.

>> the republican from ohio reject a bid on the house floor for the third time this week. 25 members of his own party opposing him, up from 20 on tuesday. fitz patrick mchenry heading into the vote. jordan appearing confident. how many hours do you think that we need to get speaker by the media? but even his own supporters didn't see a path forward. >> the votes are absolute. not changing that that is a fact you can take to the grave. >> i don't think the lord jesus himself could get the 20-17 with this conference when that secret ballot was called behind closed doors on whether to keep jordan as their nominee, 112 of his gop colleagues said it was time to move on. >> he's out. what do you think? he's out. >> republicans now back to the drawing board with a lot at stake. the unfolding israeli war with hamas. president biden asking for more than $100 billion in foreign aid to defend israel and to not forget ukraine . but congress can't approve the funding without a speaker of the house.

>> it's astonishing to me and we are in a very bad position as a party. i'm concerned about where we go from here. that was abc's rachel scott. >> republicans acknowledge that this is an embarrassing setback. several members announced they plan to run for speaker of the house, including the number three republican congressman tom emmer. the us budget deficit nearly doubled in the 2023 fiscal year, according to treasury department data released on friday. the deficit was $1.7 trillion when the fiscal year ended in september. that's a $320 billion increase from the prior year on september 30th, a stopgap spending measure was passed by congress to avoid a federal government shutdown when federal funding was extended until november 17th. a new oversight committee has been assigned to the san jose bart extension. the watchdog group comes as construction has fallen years behind schedule. the

aimed at reducing air pollution emitted by large ships in ports across the state. the original at berth regulations by the california air resources board forced large cargo ships and cruise liners to plug into the local power grid to cut down on emissions. the new rules foster an oil tankers, chemical tankers and car carrying ships. officials say that tankers and car carriers emit 56% of all air pollution from ships moored in california. there's a new tactic that's being used by people who illegally catch dungeness crabs on the peninsula. they're apparently using rideshare services like uber to get to their secluded spot during the night. instead of parking along the beach. according to the chronicle, state officials conducted a special operation in half moon bay. they say that agents encountered people who had hailed rides to the coast, mostly from san francisco and san jose. uber did not immediately comment on the

cloudy conditions. it's after midnight. we'll start to track those light showers crossing the region thanks to that cold front. so we do bring in the exclusive abc7 storm impact scale. remember we rank our storms here at abc7 from one light five to severe. just to give you a better idea of what to expect with each system and the one tomorrow is very light in nature. it's a one we just expect scattered light showers. the biggest impact, just slick roadways out there and there is the slight chance early in the afternoon of a clap of thunder. here's future weather. 530 tomorrow morning. you can see those scattered showers are moving onshore. we'll continue to track a peppering of showers throughout the morning. and the early afternoon, even 230 a, you could still see we have some light showers pushing through. it's close to sunset and thereafter that this front moves out of here. so at night, tomorrow, we are drying out and that sets the stage for a pretty nice workweek. ahead, rainfall estimates with this system where we see a downpour set up for a little bit longer, could see
