level one storm. drew is tracking the latest. good morning. >> hey, good morning, stephanie. showers have returned to the region. we're watching a cold front approach us and that has brought back the rain. here's a live look from the exploratorium camera showing you the raindrops on our camera this morning. live doppler seven over the past couple of hours showing you that it's really a smattering of light, scattered showers out there to begin our sunday. much of the wet weather focused in the east bay the north bay right now. and this is where we will find more showers moving through later on this morning and into the afternoon. on the storm impact scale, it's a level one for those scattered showers bringing about slick roadways and a slight chance of thunder later on this afternoon. here's how the day plays out. scattered showers for most of us, the best chance between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. so lunchtime you'll take the rain gear with you if you have errands to run. this morning as we head into the afternoon, the showers will diminish. and by sunset it this wet weather will be out of here. but we'll go hour by hour on future weather.

time out. this cold front show you when you have the best chance of that rain where you live. coming up in just a few minutes, stephanie. >> drew, thank you. developing news now, the war between israel and hamas is escalating as a ground attack appears to be imminent. the israel defense forces said it will enter the gaza strip and initiate an operation to take out hamas. but did not give a specific timeframe. the us military is placing additional us troops on prepare to deploy orders and deploying additional missile defense systems in the middle east. the death toll has risen to nearly 4600 people. this morning, we're also learning an israeli american dual citizen who was serving as a reservist was killed in action on friday. abc news reporter liz landers tells us more about the developments in just the last 24 hours. >> good morning. despite calls for a cease fire between israel and hamas, both sides ignoring those demands as israel prepares for what they are calling the next stage of this war against hamas. the world watching

border of israel and gaza. this morning as a ground invasion is expected soon. and airstrikes in gaza have ramped back up and for the first time, the state department has confirmed that an american was killed in action fighting for israeli defense forces. israeli defense forces have told their soldiers that they will enter gaza to, quote, destroy the hamas fighters and their infrastructure. archer, as he left church on saturday, president joe biden not directly answering reporters when asked about the potential for israeli invasion in two americans kidnaped by hamas have been released. but at least ten more americans and hundreds of other people remain as hostages in gaza territory, though the president insists us boots will not fight on the ground in the middle east, the secretary of defense announced late saturday that another navy carrier, the uss eisenhower, has been redirected to the middle east to, quote, bolster regional defense efforts against iran and help the israelis as the war

reaches into week two, more than 1400 have been killed in israel and thousands more in gaza. and the humanitarian crisis in that small area deteriorates. but at a glimmer of hope for civilians in the area came yesterday as 20 trucks from the world food program finally moved through the rafah crossing from egypt into gaza. the united nations estimates that a half a million people have evacuated into emergency shelters in gaza. the world food program and usaid continue to call for humanitarian aid to that area in the coming days. in washington, liz landers, abc news in the bay area, people are feeling the weight of this war. >> in palo alto, an interfaith vigil was held to show solidarity for israel. it's one of many vigils and rallies we've seen here locally as abc seven news reporter anser hassan reports, the focus is all on peace. >> slosser shalom. yeah, it was a small group that gathered for a big message light of flame and

together we can all try to banish the darkness. >> it was an interfaith vigil in palo alto to condemn the october seventh hamas attacks in israel standing for justice, praying for peace, says pastor jack cabanas. >> whether their neighbors are israeli have connections with israel, you know, are with palestine on the most important thing is to recognize that human grief that need and just the deep hope for justice and for eventual peace. >> sukhi chahal is a leader in the sikh community. >> terrorism of any form of any form. anybody is bad. it needs to be condemned. and this is the time least. so we have to stand together. >> rabbi david booth says unity is important at a time like this , especially with some recent attacks on muslims and jews. >> it's very frightening. i mean, haters and anti-semites, people who hate muslims, are using this as an excuse to do terrible things. we've been filling in the jewish community very insecure since this happened. people have been using this as an excuse to spew anti-semitic hate. and it's very, very frightening for our

saturday morning. officers say when they found the 40 year old woman, she was unresponsive with multiple stab wounds. they also found a trail of blood and believed she was attacked inside of her home. the death is sparking concern, especially within the jewish community, with many demanding answers. police have not identified a suspect or a motive in this killing. in contra costa county, a large fire sent plumes of smoke into the air yesterday afternoon. it all started when an agricultural burn near discovery bay got out of control. according to contra costa, fire, crews formed a perimeter line around the flames and allowed the fire to burn itself out in the south bay. san jose mayor matt mehan delivered his first state of the city address as abc7 news reporter tara campbell tells us he applauded the city's progress, but also says there's a lot more work to do. >> san jose mayor matt mehan delivering his first state of the city address saturday day, taking direct aim at one of its most pressing issues homelessness.

out in the bay area. the california association of realtors says the median sales price for bay area homes rose 6.6% in september. home sales declined nearly 24% over last year. high interest rates have more homeowners staying put, reducing supply and increasing prices. the median price is $1.3 million. so bottom line, some home buyers say they are paying more and getting less footage than they might have just a year ago. we all know san francisco gets a lot of criticism, but a new effort is underway to paint a different picture. abc7 news reporter suzanne phan talks to hopeful residents and tells us how this campaign is helping build a better bay area. make

some noise. >> it all starts here. >> it all starts here. san francisco is the new civic pride campaign aimed at bringing everyone together at saturday's kickoff event. families, artists and community members celebrated san francisco's strengths. what do you love about san francisco? >> oh, it's the diversity. for me, it's the community. and how engaged we are down. you'll see him outside the $4 million multi year civic pride campaign comes at a crucial time, according to campaign organizers. >> headlines about san francisco often highlight homelessness, drugs and crime. >> this is the beginning of a civic pride campaign to essentially rally san franciscans to share their love, share their unique stories about san francisco. >> this is to instill hope and to get people excited about san francisco. and part of it is you have to counter some of the

we've got all do our part. you know, it can't all be just the government or you know, the donors from the tech companies and so on. we've got to all pitch in in san francisco, suzanne phan abc7 news. >> if you take the main streets, alameda ferry, keep in mind tomorrow the terminal in the east bay will temporarily close. the closure will allow crews to begin a 10 million refurbishing project. the water emergency transportation authority says san francisco bay ferry service through that main street terminal will be rerouted. crews are said to begin construction later this month. the terminal will be closed for the duration of the project service is expected to resume in january in the east bay. now the people of oakland are being featured in a new exhibit at uptown station. take a look at this painting with pride. the transportation hub and shopping mall debuted 100 portraits by two local street photographer offers somebody who is. physically and emotionally invested in the city

and the progress of the city. >> i feel happy to be a part of something that shows and drives a positive narrative of what the city is and what it can be. >> the project was commissioned by visit oakland to capture the heart and soul of the town across its 19 neighborhoods. 100 faces of oakland was opened to the public as a chance for people to connect with their community. everyone photographed was also invited to the event. pretty neat. well, halloween is right around the corner and three dogs from humboldt county are already getting into the spooky season. check this out. these rescued shelter pups are blowing up social media with their array of cute costumes. and i got to say, if i opened the door and saw these cuties, i'd give them all the treats you can recognize some characters from movies like toy story, shrek and monsters inc, their owner says dale franklin. and joey, who you see here, are all called the rescue boys. i got to wonder, though, if the owner is

dressing up with them, what do you think? >> right. do they have like a costume theme going on? exactly i mean, it's like it's dapper going to expect to be paired up with you. i think i think of my costume. i have no idea what i'm going to wear. and it's only just a week out of here for halloween. it's certainly feeling a lot like fall today. we have showers out there this morning. temperatures in the upper 50s to lower 60s and we have more wet weather on the way as our sunday progresses. let's go to our network of cameras outside. you can see some of them have drops on them. san jose right now, you're dealing with partly cloudy skies, but the south bay will get a little light rain as the day rolls on. here's live. doppler seven, you can see it's just a peppering of light showers out there. we had one shower move through the east bay. it's now into solano county, approaching rio vista this morning. we have a light shower that just moved through santa rosa. it's pushing off to the east and we have some more light showers in parts of the south bay working through mount hamilton in this morning. the biggest impact with this system will be slick roadways

throughout the morning and early afternoon. 62. good morning, oakland. it's mild out there. it's also humid, 58 in the city. we're at 58 in santa rosa, 62. in san jose, we're at 59 in san ramon. here's live. doppler seven along with satellite. the story we are tracking. you can clearly see the area of low pressure. it's spin pushing a cold front into northern california this morning. supplies us with the showers today on the exclusive abc seven storm impacts. gale it is a level one light storm. we are tracking on your sunday scattered showers with slick roadways. the biggest impact as this front moves through later on today in the early afternoon, there is a slight chance for a thunder shower popping up. we could hear a clap of thunder. let's go hour by hour on future weather. time out your sunday. we have scattered showers, light in nature out there right now. by 10 a.m, though, we're starting to see some scattered downpours move through parts of the north bay. this is when the front is moving onshore right around lunchtime. that is when we have the best chance of hearing a clap of thunder. and that's when a lot of us have our best chance of seeing showers in

our neighborhoods. by about 2 p.m, we're expecting the wet weather to be in the inland east bay, parts of the south bay, and then it's pushing out of here. by the time the sun goes down later on this evening after 6 p.m, that front has crossed us and the showers are diminishing. the rainfall totals where we see those downpours linger a little bit longer, picking up about a quarter of an inch, if not a little bit more than that when it comes to rainfall for a lot of us, we are expecting less than a quarter of an inch of rain out of this fast moving front. a level one today, a lot of cloud cover. take the rain gear with you. it's not raining the entire day, but between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m, that's when you'll likely need the umbrella as that front moves through overnight tonight, the cloud cover begins to move out. the showers are done, but we'll likely see some dense areas of fog developing in the north bay valleys. that's something we'll track very closely. first thing on your monday. here's the accuweather 70 forecast next seven days for you scattered showers today with the best chance between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. later on today after this front moves through. it is sunny. it is warmer with morning fog to

hurricane tammy on the caribbean island of barbuda. the effects and what to expect for the rest of the weekend at home here in the states. and finally, sports fans gearing up for monday night football and that showdown between the 49 ers and the vikings. ooh, lots to look forward to. and formula one, we are live in texas for today's us grand prix. that's all ahead here on gma. we will see you then. >> building a better bay area is about looking at possible solutions to issues in our communities and following up on those ideas to see if they're working. this morning we're looking at bike lanes in san francisco's mission district. they were installed to make it safer for cyclists, but we're learning they're actually hurting some local businesses. abc seven news reporter luis pena has a closer look at the problem. >> three months ago, we tested and reported on the controversial valencia street bike lane. cars can easily drive through these rubber dividers. back then, it was still under

construction and there was already a mix of opinions. >> i don't love it. >> actually, i like it a lot. >> this week we went back and heard from multiple business owners who say the bike lane is making it hard to survive on valencia street. >> not everybody, you know, take bicycles or walk. people drive to the city in the weekend. our businesses have went down dramatically when the valencia street bike lane was installed, about 70 parking spots were removed from the area. >> i get a lot of calls every day right before the shift starts. sorry, we cannot make it . we've been looking for parking for half an hour for 45 minutes. we have to cancel. >> gola restaurant opened five months ago. rafiq said it was a dream to open his business on this street. but lately it's been a nightmare. >> this is was the last disaster. we were okay with it the first month because. okay, it's a pilot program. what's the worst could happen? and we've seen the worst. >> supervisor hillary ronen represents the mission district.

she said her office has been swamped with hundreds of messages from cyclists complaining about the safety aspect of the bike lane. she's proposing a solution if they made it a one way street, maybe we could have a place for people to double park. >> we could have bike lanes that are, you know, on the on the sides of the streets. and we could engineer things so that both sides would be happier than they are now. >> during an sfmta board of directors meeting, sustainable transportation advocate luke bornheimer called for change. >> either pedestrianized the street or install curbside protected bike lanes immediately. not wait any longer. >> at that same meeting, the citizens advisory committee made strong recommendations to end the pilot program. the sfmta cac recommends abandoning the current unintuitive and dangerous center running bicycle lane pilot on valencia and refocusing the street toward its core needs. in a statement, sfmta acknowledged the impacts of the bike lane and said in part, we are committed to continued changes throughout the

pilot period to optimize the available space to the extent possible. all as it stands now, business owners like rafiq don't think they can wait for the pilot program to run its course within a year, this street will die completely. luz pena, abc seven news. >> the sfmta board of directors did not make a decision at that meeting, but the agency did say it's actively monitoring use of loading zones and commercial loading. coming up on abc seven mornings, how bay area and southern california leaders are coming together to find solutions to the drug overdose crisis. then as the war continues in israel, the impact is felt. we hear from locals who say their family in gaza is, quote,rying their best to live

>> i'm looking forward to that, drew. thank you. it's all hands on deck as california grapples with an increasingly complex drug overdose crisis. now san francisco and los angeles are coming together to find some solutions. la city councilwoman tracy park took to the streets of san francisco this week. fentanyl is fueling record deaths in both cities. san francisco is on pace for its deadliest year yet. >> i represent the west side of los angeles, including venice beach, which has been ground zero of the homelessness, mental health and addiction crisis in los angeles. outside of skid row. and so i'm here to learn what has worked, what hasn't worked. >> the councilwoman was joined by ellen grants, one of the founders of mothers against drug addiction and deaths. she also met with supervisor matt dorsey park plans to present her findings to the la city council next week as the war rages on, people in the bay area are trying to keep up with family members in both israel and in gaza for palestinian americans,

it's becoming increasingly harder because power is cut off on the gaza strip. abc seven news reporter anser hassan spoke to some locals who hope their family members will survive into rami sultan recorded the last phone call he had with his cousin, who lives in gaza right now. >> the people of gaza have no spokespeople. they have no witnesses. it's a situation where you have to choose between what way you're going to die. rami who works in high tech in silicon valley, says 500 of his family members had to walk almost 20 miles, fleeing israeli airstrikes in northern gaza, take refuge in unrun schools who , rami's cousin tells him they don't have food, they don't have water, they don't have money. my cousin explained to me that it's not safe. it's just somewhat less dangerous. they're trying their best to live. they're trying their best to live. >> rami recorded the conversation to have an

eyewitness account of what's happening on the ground and to serve as a family archive if they don't survive. >> my cousin conveyed that they had given up on human rights and the concept of human rights with respect to them being applied to their situation and i want the world to know is that we're human. our lives, my family's lives are just as valuable as israeli lives. >> it is very important for us to remember our humanity that this is not a political issue and that this is a humanitarian issue. >> to colette ghonim is a filmmaker who lives in san francisco. her first feature length film traces of home, traces her palestinian father's journey back to his childhood home in what is now israel, which he was forced to flee. >> my father is definitely a refugee. he was removed in 1948 with the catastro of the nakba. >> her family is safe, but her concerns remain around the deteriorating conditions on the ground in gaza. as a filmmaker,

hold a forum with the new contenders in the running for the speakership. it's been over two weeks since kevin mccarthy was ousted from the seat. legislation cannot be brought to the floor until the conference makes a choice on his replacement. but the list of potential candidates is crowded with representatives kevin hern and tom emmer leading the pack. a secret ballot vote will be held on tuesday morning with hopes of bringing a candidate to the floor. a colorado judge has rejected former president donald trump's move to dismiss a lawsuit that could keep him off the state's ballot. trump's attorneys argue that exercising his free speech protects him from this lawsuit. a judge ruled that this law did not apply in this case. the nonprofit suing claims that putting trump on the ballot in colorado violates the 14th amendment. it blocks anyone from holding office who has engaged in insurrection against the us constitution. nearly 100 days after hollywood's tv and film actors walked off the job, there's now finally a date for when negotiations will resume.

the actors union and studios announced they'll meet again on tuesday with several studio executives expected to join those talks. both sides last met on october 11th. that's when talks broke off, saying the gap between managed and the unions was too great to continue negotiations. one of the major sticking points is the union is asking for 2% of revenue generated by particular titles to the cast. in oakland, a safe place to support fathers. the alameda county fatherhood summit gave more than 1000 dads a chance to network and swap resources. these are father figures. it's meant to uplift them as leaders in their homes and communities. speakers at the event were therapists, authors, educators and activists. they say it can be difficult for men to seek help or share their feelings, which makes this event all the more important. >> we have seen in doing this work is if you provide the space where fathers won't be judged, they are eager to talk hungry

have a tesla, listen up. nearly 55,000 teslas are being recalled due to a potential brake safety issue. the issue affects model x cars from 2021 through 2023, according to the national highway traffic safety administration. affected vehicles can fail to detect low brake fluid. this decreases its braking capacity and increases the risk of a crash. tesla has released a free software update to correct the issue and will be notifying affected owners starting in december. well, dozens of motor officers are showing off their driving skills in sfpd's motorcycle skills competition and it's not easy. the event was set up near pier 30 on the embarcadero. the competition invites motorbike officers to move through a series of obstacle courses. i just won the last man standing motorcycle competition by sfpd. >> you're up against all these good riders and you just try to

and his twin sister were born prematurely. christopher has terminal lung disease and other complications in the last several months. >> has been really difficult. he no longer leaves the house. he no longer comes outside. he is in a pretty much like a state of dementia becoming homebound several years ago kept christopher from going out and seeing holiday lights. >> something he always loved. so in 2018, his mom brought the lights to him. >> the next year, 2019, i went a little bit bigger and that that's how it snowballed. >> fillled neighbors can't go past the house without stopping. many touched by the significance of the display part of our community to do it. >> so i'm so glad that she's doing this. this is amazing. >> the display, though, isn't just attracting people from around the block. >> people come from fresno, san diego, way, way up north, jimenez says. >> it's that community support that inspires her to continue the display, even as things have become more challenging for her family. >> i was not going to do it this

basically either side of about 60 degrees, 62 in oakland right now, 59in the city, 59 in palo alto. we're at 57in napa. it's also humid out there with this moisture moving through. here's live doppler seven along with satellite. the story we are tracking. here's our area of low pressure about to spin onshore. it's pushing a cold front through this morning and that's ushering in those showers on our sunday look at rainfall totals across northern california. coastal communities will pick up a decent amount of rain where eureka is closing in on three quarters of an inch of rain. parts of the north bay will see some heavier showers later on this morning as that front pushes through on the exclusive abc7 storm impact scale. it's a level one light storm we have today with scattered showers. biggest impact, slower travel than normal thanks to slick roadways as we head into the early afternoon, we do have the slight chance of a thunder shower moving through. we could hear a clap of thunder say around noon today. here's future weather. let's go hour by hour, 10 a.m. here are some of those heavier downpours. cars working through parts of the north bay,

santa rosa, cloverdale, ukiah getting a bit of heavy rain early on in the afternoon. we'll head into 12 p.m. this is when the front is crossing us. this is when we have a chance of a thunderstorm moving through by about 2 p.m, much of the rain is centered in the inland east bay, the south bay. and then after that, it is pushing out. so as the sun goes down later on today, we do expect the showers to diminish as well. rainfall totals will see some heavier totals in the north bay with that round of some heavier downpours this morning. look at santa rosa. could pick up a half an inch of rain, a little bit more than that in ukiah outside of the north bay. it's a lot less rain. we're anticipating less than a quarter of an inch of rain outside of the north bay. but certainly the window between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. today, that five hour window is when you'll likely need the umbrella as you head out and about today. it's a level one. we have a lot of cloud cover scattered showers. it's cooler than average mid 60s to the low 70 soquel's overnight. tonight we get rid of the showers. we'll likely see some areas of dense fog developing in the valleys of
