for joining us. the horizon air flight left everett, washington, just north of seattle bound for sfo sunday evening. >> but the plane was diverted to portland where the off duty pilot was taken off the plane and arrested for trying to shut off the engines. >> the t-handle, which is what this individual tried to pull on each engine actually turns the engines off and prepares it for a fire extinguisher. but you can get them back on by pushing it in. but you've got to go through a relight procedure. the problem is at high altitude, you can get the engines restarted at low altitude and that could be a fatal result, potentially fatal result. >> very scary. obviously. abc seven news anchor karina nova is in the newsroom with a closer look at what happened in the cockpit last night karina, dan, kristen, that off duty pilot who's from pleasant hill, now faces 83 counts of attempted murder, among other charges, joseph emerson was on a horizon air flight headed to sfo when officials say he tried to shut off the engines by pulling the fire extinguisher handles. >> so how did this happen? well,

emerson works for alaska airlines, which owns horizon air, and he was authorized to sit in the cockpit in the flight deck seat. aviation experts say it's not unusual for a pilot commuting to another airport to sit there. we're still working to figure out exactly what happened next, but officials say emerson was overpowered and alaska airlines saying his attempt to shut off the engines was unsuccessful, adding that the captain and first officer quickly restored landed. the plane, was then able to safely land in portland with no one injured. here's a recording of the exchange on board between the pilot and air traffic controllers. this is shortly after emerson was subdued by the flight crew and handcuffed to a seat. okay i just give you a heads up. >> we've got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. um, and he doesn't sound like he's causing any issue in the back right now. i think he's subdued. >> yeah, we want law enforcement as soon as we get on the ground and parked horizon 2059, turn right, heading 100.

>> when you have a moment, what is your gate that you're parking at? and do you need a local law enforcement to show up? >> yes, we need law enforcement 100. and we don't know the gate yet. >> 2059. roger, when you find out, let me know, please. yes, we do. 2059. what is the threat level? the threat the threat is now in the back of the airplane. >> so we're we're reduced on the threat level now. >> we're going to check in with the flight attendants and make sure everything is running smoothly. but it seems like he's settled down as soon as he, uh, after one moment of going a little bit overboard, we put him back. so 2059. roger, just because we can report this, what was the highest level that occurred escalated it to a409. >> but he's out of the cockpit now. >> when the plane landed in portland, emerson was arrested and booked into jail. he'll be arraigned in court tomorrow. karina nova, abc seven news. >> all right, karina, thanks very much. so many questions now about this alaska flight operated by horizon emerson.

that person riding in the jump seat, the cap off duty pilot, is facing 83 counts of attempt murder, 83 counts of recklessly endanger another person. those are one count for each person on the flightnd one count of endangering an aircraft. >> that flight was full. and we are hearing today from some passengers who say that the crew handled this emergency so calmly . they had no idea how serious things were, is reassuring for them. >> of course. abc seven news reporter suzanne fawn spoke with one couple who had two very different views of actually what happened. suzanne >> so, dan, kristen, a san francisco couple tells me they're just grateful to have made it home safely. >> the boyfriend was seated up at the front of the plane right by the pilots in seat one a his girlfriend and aubrey at the back of the plane. >> just happy to be home. happy to be safe. and i'm happy they handled it really well. >> alex wood is one of the passengers on alaska airlines flight 2059. so relieved to be safe. he and his girlfriend,

aubrey gavello, were returning home from a friend's wedding when police say an off duty pilot inside the cockpit attempted to disable the aircraft engines. neither wood or gavello ever saw or heard any commotion. did you hear anything at all that raised red flags? >> nothing. nothing. until the flight attendants announcement that said we had a situation we needed to prepare for landing. my boyfriend was up in the front, so we weren't sitting together and he slept through the whole thing. so that tells you how calm it was. >> gavello says the announcement was made about an hour into the flight. then she saw flight attendants walk the suspect past her. >> i saw zip ties during which was confusing because they had told us it was a medical emergency, gavello says. >> at the back of the plane, a flight attendant tried to calm the suspect, telling him you're going to be okay. what was his demeanor? >> yeah, he was tall. well, kempt had a lanyard well, like shirt tucked in, looked well put together. this is what it looked like after the emergency landing in portland. we landed and then about ten police officers armed came on, walked straight to the

back of the plane where i was sitting and detained him. and walked the gentleman off the plane. he looked dead in the eyes, almost. it was almost like he had a psychotic breakdown and then the flight attendant got back on and told us he had a mental breakdown. >> when gavello both say this experience has raised some big concerns with all love and respect for people dealing with mental health issues, it's a scary moment for all of us and hope he gets the help he needs. >> but i also don't think it's acceptable for a pilot to do this and just be able to hop on the plane with this going on, wood says. >> he thanked one of the pilots flying the plane and he's grateful for what the crew did. >> props to them for being able to keep us safe. >> alex wood and aubrey gavello both got back here to sfo around midnight after an emergency landing in portland. now both of them never had any indication of what truly went on until they

got home and they read about it online. hours later live at sfo. suzanne vaughn, abc seven news. >> suzanne, thank you. >> we're learning more about the suspect now, joseph david emerson. we're not showing his photograph because he has not yet been formally charged. abc seven news i-team reporter dan noyes is here with more on emerson's background and what he's been able to find out today dan? >> well, dan and kristen, when i check into cases like this, sometimes what you don't find is most important. >> there are virtually no warning signs that lead to that close call in the cockpit. joseph david emerson is 44 years old. the jail booking sheet says he's six foot one, 210 pounds and that he was arrested by the port of portland police at 411 this morning. a comprehend live records search shows no criminal record, no tax liens, no divorce proceedings. he was born in washington state and moved to contra costa county in 2008. he became a pilot for alaska airlines in april 2016. he has a wife who teaches at peralta community college and two young

sons. he owns his home in pleasant hill today, neighbors were struggling to make sense of what happened. >> he's never had a negative statement about his job or anything like that. >> so yeah, he's very understanding and well of other people and, you know, we have a grandson with special needs and he's very good to him. >> so we just can't imagine him doing anything that would hurt anyone. >> he was active on twitter now ex during the pandemic discussing alaska airlines pilots being furloughed. he wrote in december 2020, the future of air travel remains highly depressed. immediate relief for the airline industry is critical, and one of his facebook posts, especially struck me. i tell my son every night, every day is another gift of this great adventure called life good and bad, happy, sad. all are equally important. if it is true that emerson tried to

crash that plane on sunday, you have to wonder how and why he lost that healthy outlook. i also called and texted his parents, his brothers and sisters, and did not reach any of them. >> dan kristen more likely as we go along here. >> exactly. >> thank you, dan, very much. >> the airline pilots association says pilots are continuously evaluated throughout their careers, adding while the investigation is just getting underway, it is important to remember that the airline pilot profession in north america is one of the most highly vetted and scrutinized careers. >> and with that in mind, we wanted to learn exactly how something like this could have happened. from a technical point of view. so abc seven news south bay reporter dustin dorsey got inside a cockpit with an aviation expert with just a pull of a lever and a press of a button. >> power and fuel can be cut to a plane's engine by fire extinguishers. that's what was allegedly attempted by off duty pilot joe emerson in an embraer 175 cockpit during a flight from everett, washington, to san francisco. a look inside a similar plane could give us a

look at how this could have gone down. >> i'm in the captain's spot on the boeing 737. again, a slightly different aircraft, hiller aviation museum ceo john welty showed us how things look in this plane. >> these are the emergency controls for the number one and number two engines, only to be used in case of a fire. >> what i would do is i would pull this lever up, which is hard to do. i've got to push the safety button down first so it can't happen by accident. when i pull this up, this disconnects the fuel flow going to the engine. this also disconnects the hydraulics and the electrical power. >> turning the lever would start the fire extinguishers and if done for both engines, this would leave the plane with no way to fly. normally in the embraer 175 cockpit, these fire extinguisher controls are up top within easy access to engage for a pilot sitting in the jump seat of the cockpit right between the two pilots, exactly where emerson was said to be, the flight was full. >> so all the seats were occupied. but the jump seat was available. and there are a number of airline personnel who can sit up in the jump seats of the cockpit. >> that includes off duty

pilots, often flying to destinations where they will board a plane. they will pilot themselves. emerson was scheduled to be on a flight crew in san francisco monday. thankfully, the control of the aircraft was never lost and the crew was able to divert to portland. the mental health of emerson has been brought into question and welty says airline pilots are required to undergo medical exams every six months. a very important part of that examination is reviewing any mental illness issues, any medications that might affect cognitive functioning, any psychological issues that may have arisen in the six month interval since the last first class medical exam. questions we may learn answers to in the future. as emerson now faces 83 counts of attempted murder in san carlos. dustin dawsey, abc seven news. >> i spoke with abc news aviation analyst john nance during getting answers this afternoon when he put things into perspective about how rare these incidents are and how the crew managed the threat. >> the captain and the first officer took care of the problem and there were no weapons involved. thank thanks to our ability with tsa to screen them

>> new details just in now about a shooting at a teenage house party in oakley that left a 16 year old high school student dead and three others injured. we just learned a 17 year old girl was released from the hospital today and that the two others surviving victims are 15 year a 16 year old boy. >> yeah, now it happened on saturday night, abc seven news reporter leslienky has more on a tragedy that is reverberating thro three high schools with a suspect still out on the loose. >> a house party on this peaceful street in this suburban neighborhood erupted into gunfire for around 1115 saturday night. basically because we could hear a bunch of noise and some loud screaming, like a fight was kind of going on outside. >> so i came out and at that point, there was already people running down the street. so scared wasn't shortly after that i heard six shots ring off this neighbor called 911. >> as chaos ensued, it was at least 100 to 150 kids at the minimum that were running out of

here. >> it could have been 200. it was so many. their innocents were lost. you could see the terror in their face, in their eyes. so many of them running out of here and having to experience that. >> oakley's police chief released a statement saying they found five nine millimeter shell casings in front of the house. a 16 year old died on the front lawn. three others were injured and taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek with non-life threatening injuries. witnesses described gunshot wounds to arms and legs. police say officers came to the house based on a noise complaint 30 minutes before the shooting, but left when an 18 year old assured them she would break up the party. but 20 to 30 teenagers showed up a short time later and a fight broke out. the shooter escaped. most of the students in this neighborhood go to freedom high school, where there was a heavy police presence. today, parents clustered around the outside doors as rumors circulated and some students left class. >> they said that there was a rumor that the person from the party was going to come and

shoot up the school. and we felt very unsafe being here. and we just wanted to get away. >> you've walked off campus because your parents were worried? >> yes, and i was worried for my own safety being here. >> witnesses i spoke to said students present at the party were from three high schools. freedom liberty and heritage. and here at liberty high school, at least today, counselors are available to students who might have been traumatized. police say they are following up on all the leads and believe there was just one shooter in oakley. i'm leslie brinkly, abc7 news. >> this police patrol is at petaluma high school today after a threat of a school shooting was written inside a school bathroom on friday. the student who wrote the message threatened to shoot up the school today and then named three people targeted . over the weekend. police interrogated several people and determined the students who made the threat did not have access to weapons. those involved were scheduled to meet with school administrators this morning. >> a mother here in northern california says she's hurt and

angry after sacramento police mistook her eight year old son for a crime suspect. a witness recorded the incident which took place on the shoulder of 80 in sacramento. shanice stewart says police pulled her over last week when she checked her rear view mirror. she saw police with their guns drawn. she told her son to stay in the car because she was afraid police would open fire at her son if he made a sudden move out of fear in the video, you can hear her son pleading for his mother, please. >> that moment i was at fear that maybe the cops can think that, okay, this is trying to run towards us and they're in danger and they can shoot. >> sacramento police say they mistook the eight year old for a juvenile with several felony warrants. they apologized to the family, but stewart is afraid her son will be traumatized and anxious if he ever has an encounter with police in the future. >> ferry riders in alameda will have to adjust their travel plans if they use the main street terminal. it's closed until january for much needed renovation work. drone view

ago as golden gate park will soon have a new home. the 150 foot tall sky star observation wheel is being moved to fisherman's wharf. the ride will be set up at a triangular shaped parking lot right next to pier 39. you can see in this video how the gondolas are already gone at golden gate park. operators aim to get the ferris wheel up and running in time for that big apec summit with all the asia pacific leaders here. that kicks off on november 11th. you know, i think that's a good idea because i think a lot of those folks delegates and journalists will be covering that and they'll be in that fisherman's wharf area. right. so it's a nice visual piece. what do you think? >> i think you know, i think it's a great idea. it's going to get a lot of pushback, i'm sure, from some people in the city. but, you know, i think of all the cities, london and others that have these it's in a much more prominent place now. it's going to be a big attraction. a

slammed down mats and get up in an athlete's face as a tactic to intimidate them. she claims to have gone to the school's athletic department to report the behavior, but was allegedly dismissed. >> i was really interested in coming to utah because of their team chemistry and the 2021 olympic alternate opening up about how the experience has affected her, saying i was scared to death by the loud and angry outburst from the coach and saying her physical, mental and emotional health has rapidly declined and agar has not publicly named the source of the alleged abuse. >> but the team's head coach, tom farden, recently faced allegations of verbal and emotional abuse from former athletes. an investigation conducted by a third party found his conduct included cursing and throwing of objects. farden allegedly would negatively comment on body image, weight or food choices and targeted struggling students with negative treatment. in one case allegedly telling an athlete she would be a nobody working at a gas station. but the review concluded coach farden did not

it's a real thing. but monday night football, you've been watching as a child. what is it like under the prime time lights with the whole country and the whole league watching you? can you describe what a monday night is like? >> it's really special for me being in the league. i think this is my third year, but my first year ever going out, one of my first starts, my third start, i think was against was on a monday night. and so i think it's just such a surreal feeling. i think the fan base, we travel well, but you know, going into a place like minnesota, you know, with a great fan base that's going to allow ourselves to be on a big stage, another prime time lights. and so for us, we're just going to enjoy it and take it in the first loss of the season. >> you don't want to have them, but how can this maybe reset you guys? you come off such a high against the cowboys, i guess knocked down a little bit. how do you feel the team is ready to bounce back monday against minnesota? >> i think we're in a great spot. i think honestly, it was almost a good loss in a sense for us just to have that taste in our mouths, that feeling. so be able to go out there and kind of compete even at a higher level. the next time we go out
