understand over a thousand kids left school today. >> i am further informed that they left school out of concerns over their safety that after rumors spread on social media that there could be more violence connected to the shooting that happened at a house party saturday night in oakley, one that left a 16 year old dead and three other teens wounded with gunshots. >> we don't know where the shooter is. we don't know what's happening. we don't know anything. if you think i'm going to let my daughter walk back here. you're crazy. and i think all of these parents probably feel the same. >> yes. oakley police chief paul beard says monday his rumors were not true and there was no threat to freedom high school. >> nothing in our investigation that leads us to believe that is the fact. we knew that our kids were safe today, that this incident did not have any connections to school. >> the principal and superintendent saying at one point that some students left the campus to hang out at nearby fast food restaurant. >> that's some kid just got killed. and then now there's a

having to divert in portland. the flight crew was able to put zip ties on the suspect and arrest him on the tarmac. abc7 news reporter tim johns is learning more about this off duty pilot from the bay area. tim's in the newsroom. tim. >> yeah. dan now oregon authorities have identified that pilot as 44 year old joseph david emerson. emerson is originally from washington state but currently resides in the east bay. he works for alaska airlines, which owns horizon air and is why he was authorized to sit in the cockpit in the flight deck, jump seat with joseph david emerson now in custody. more details are beginning to emerge about the man who allegedly tried to turn the engines off. a plane flying from seattle to san francisco. records reviewed by the abc seven news i-team show that emerson has lived in contra costa county since 2008 and has no criminal record, tax liens or divorce proceedings. he has a wife who teaches at peralta community college, as well as two young children. neighbors near his home in pleasant hill tell us emerson was always kind towards them. they say they were

shocked to hear the news. >> he's never had a negative statement about his job or anything like that. so yeah, he's very understanding and well of other people. >> and, you know, we have a grandson with special needs and he's very good to him. >> that sense of disbelief was also felt by passenger others on the plane. emerson allegedly tried to down. >> it was definitely rattling. not knowing what was happening. >> but aubrey cavallo was flying back to the bay area after attending a wedding. she says knowing that emerson had been thoroughly vetted and trained by the airline makes the situation even more shocking. aubrey tells us she saw emerson's arrest firsthand after the plane made its emergency landing in oregon. >> about ten police officers, us armed, came on, walked straight to the back of the plane where i was sitting and detained him and walked. the gentleman off the plane. he looked me dead in the eyes almost. others though, say the experience wasn't as terrifying for them.

>> that includes aubrey's boyfriend, alex, who says he slept through the entire incident. >> i regret falling asleep. yeah, i'm never going to fall asleep again on a flight despite missing the action, though, alex says he's just relieved everything turned out okay. i'm just happy to be home. happy to be safe. and i'm happy they handled it really well. >> now, we did reach out to several of emerson's family members this evening, but have not heard back from any of them as of yet. he is facing charges, including 83 counts of attempted murder. that's one for each person on board that plane. he could be in court as soon as this week in the newsroom. tim johns, abc seven news. all right, tim, thank you. >> and we wanted to learn how exactly something like this could happen from a technical aspect. so we got inside a cockpit with an aviation expert with just a pull of a lever and a press of a button. power and fuel can be cut to a plane's engine by fire, extinguish fires, which is what emerson is accused of attempting to do. now, normally this function is only to be used in case of fire. >> what i would do is i would pull this lever up, which is hard to do. i've got to push the

>> one less republican tonight in the race for the speaker of the house. another vote is scheduled for tomorrow morning. representative jim jordan failed three times to get the 217 votes needed. so he was dropped by his gop colleagues. house majority leader steve scalise ended his bid when he couldn't secure the votes. the party has yet to unify behind anyone. there are now eight republicans in the running after representative dan muser dropped out today. it's been almost three weeks now without a speaker and no legislation can reach the floor in the meantime. um, so there is rising urgency to get someone selected. >> happening tomorrow, san francisco mayor london breed is expected to give an update on preparations for the asia pacific economic cooperation summit, or apec, which is coming next month. it's just about three weeks away now, between 30 and 50,000 people are expected in the city, including president biden and several heads of state. it is a very big deal. officials say a four square block section of downtown san francisco will be locked down

school in san jose. daniel delgado is one of them. three, three, four, five, six. last year, vital had the idea to organize a halloween dance specifically for special needs students. and it's becoming tradition. >> you know, we don't usually go to the regular school dances. and i said, hey, i want to showcase and really highlight students association. and i thought, hey, my students, they want to go to the dance. so let's have a dance. >> last year, six classrooms attended from the evergreen school district. parent rebecca delgado said the dance created an inclusive environment. >> it it's nice because he feels like his peers, you know, he doesn't they don't feel isolated . they feel like, you know, part of the part of the students. >> delgado said. it's a great feeling to know her son can be himself. >> and it's very hard, you know, because the things we go through on a daily basis, you know, other children don't have to deal with this year. >> vital is going bigger and better. the district is allowing

camera. all's quiet here. a crisp morning with patchy dense fog. sunny and mild afternoon. it is going to get cooler mid to late in the workweek and a chance of showers coming your way on friday. the fog will be dense in patches around the region, not just the bay shoreline and the coast, but parts of the north bay valley. so be careful. tomorrow afternoon, we'll see some higher clouds, but pretty much a nice looking day. morning temperatures in the 40s and the 50s. this is where you need the sweaters or the jackets as it will start out cooler than yesterday morning or this morning as well. temperatures in the low 60s to low 80s. it's going to be a mild tuesday. plenty of sun from coast to inland. wednesday, temperatures drop off as a cold front comes in thursday is going to be a cooler one. and friday is when those numbers bottom out. upper 50s to barely making it into the 60s. the reason for all of these changes mid to late in the week, cold front coming in. it will bring some snow down to lake level in the sierra nevada. it'll bring us cooler windier weather on wednesday and then
