this is america this morning. good tuesday morning, everyone. >> i'm andrew dymburt. >> good morning to you. i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with major developments from the middle east, including concerns about iranian backed militants targeting us troops. it comes as israel intensifies its assault on hamas in the gaza strip. >> israel says it killed three deputy commanders of hamas last night inside mosques being used by the terror group as a gathering place. also overnight, new video of israeli attacks on iranian backed hezbollah targets in lebanon, including a military compound. >> but the biggest headline this morning, the release of two more hostages held by hamas raising the question, will israel further delay its ground invasion in the hopes that more hostages will be freed? >> but we begin our coverage with those concerns about us troops being targeted. and this morning, abc news has learned the us military is weighing options to respond to iranian backed militants in the middle east after israel ramped up its

war against hamas in gaza. >> this could really expand rapidly and i believe the united states not only wants to have the assets to assist israel, but also defend us troops in syria and iraq. >> a senior us official says there is deep concern in israeli ground invasion of gaza could trigger a larger war. the white house yesterday accused iran of actively facilitating rocket and drone attacks on us military bases in the region from syria to iraq and beyond, launched by militant groups from hezbollah to the houthis. iran accuses the us of expanding the war. the iranian foreign minister calling on president biden to stop what the minister described as hypocrisy. >> i don't believe that the hezbollah leadership does want to get involved, but but ultimately, they're going to get a lot of guidance from iran and they're going to have a lot of pressure if the israelis do a ground invasion into gaza and hamas starts losing. and if they

don't join the fight, then and then they'll lose a lot of credentials. >> the us has advised israeli officials to consider delaying a ground invasion after two weeks of airstrikes on gaza in retaliation for hamas militants slaughtering civilians. >> on october seventh. a senior us official also tells abc news hamas is willing to release more hostages depending on what israel does. new video shows two israeli hostages arriving at a hospital in tel aviv this morning. hamas released the 85 and 79 year old women to the red cross. they were abducted from their homes along with their husbands. >> i know that she's well enough to speak and well enough to walk. i think she walks across the border so my mom's story is an amazing story. >> their release brings the total number of hostages freed to four. the us says efforts are ongoing to secure the release of hundreds of other hostages, including americans. >> these images have been plastered wall to wall on israeli television an and that's

raising the pressure on israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu echoed in washington to pause the invasion of gaza and instead focus on releasing those 220 hostages. >> meanwhile, a third convoy of trucks delivered water, food and medicine to gaza. but the supplies amount to only 1% of the population. daily needs. more trucks are waiting to be cleared at the rafah border crossing, but no fuel has been allowed in for fear it will be used by hamas. desperate hospitals say they're running out of fuel for generators to keep the power on, but israel says hamas has fuel stockpiles, oils and just won't release them for civilians. as the wall street journal reports, hamas was willing to release up to 50 hostages. but the group backed out after israel refused to allow fuel into gaza. us intelligence officials are warning that hamas and hezbollah militant may be trying to enter the united states through the southern border. >> border agents have been warned that people may travel from the middle east. they have been told to look out for men who are traveling alone, wearing military gear. we now turn to

louisiana. at least seven people have died after this highway pile up outside of new orleans. it's being blamed on so-called super fog and it involved nearly 160 vehicles. so super fog is a combination of dense fog and smoke from marsh fires. witnesses say they heard chain reaction crashes for 30 minutes. it kind of got a little bit more chaotic and tire started popping. >> and from the fires and everything was able to move out of their way somehow. there were i mean, 90% of the cars that were surrounding me were hit. louisiana's governor is calling for people to donate blood. >> more super fog is expected there today. an off duty pilot will face 83 charges of attempted murder today after allegedly trying to crash a plane on the way to san francisco. >> the suspect was hitching a ride in the cockpit, which is common when pilots travel to other cities. sources say before the incident, the suspect made a comment similar to i'm not

right. abc's ike ejiochi is here now with more. ike, good morning. what can you tell us? >> good morning, andrew. this case is raising new questions about the medical screening of pilots, especially when it comes to their mental health. this morning, the fbi is investigating after an off duty pilot allegedly tried to crash a passenger plane. alaska airlines flight 2059 left everett, washington, for san francisco sunday, packed with 80 passengers and in the cockpit, 44 year old joseph emerson, an off duty pilot with alaska air, hitching a ride in the jump seat soon after takeoff. officials say emerson tried to cut the plane's engines by pulling the fire extinguisher handles known as the t, handles the t handle, which is what this individual tried to pull on. >> each engine actually turns the engines off and prepares it for a fire extinguisher. the problem is at high altitude, you can get the engines restarted at low altitude. that could be a fatal result. >> the crew was able to overpower emerson, handcuffing him to a seat in the cabin.

>> we've got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. doesn't sound like he's causing any issue in the back right now. i think he's the dude. >> the pilots then diverted to portland where emerson was taken into custody after we did land and the gentleman was escorted off, the flight attendant got back on the speaker and said, plane and simple, he had a mental breakdown. passenger planes have been deliberately crashed before. in 2015, officials say a copilot on a suicide mission crashed this germanwings flight into the alps. and last year, authorities believe this china eastern flight was brought down intentionally. the faa relies on pilots to self-report any mental health conditions during annual visits with aviation. medical examiners. pilots only get additional psychological testing if it's requested by their examiner or the faa recently acknowledged hiring additional mental health professionals. as for joseph emerson, a neighbor described him as friendly. we just can't imagine him doing

anything that would hurt anyone. now, faa records show joseph emerson received his latest medical clearance just last month. investigators say this incident was not related to events in the middle east or current events. they're now looking through emerson's social media. rhiannon really scary. >> ike. thank you for that. one less republican is now running for speaker of the house. pennsylvania congressman dan muser has dropped out of the race. house members last night heard from the remaining eight candidates ahead of another secret ballot vote today. congressman tom emmer is considered the front runner. he denies any tension with former president trump and members voted to certify the 2020 election, angering trump loyalists. >> police near milwaukee are investigating a shooting at a middle school. they say a suspect was acting erratically and climbed onto the school's roof and began firing at police. they fired back, killing the suspect. no details on the suspect identity were released. it has taken more than 50 years to find out that scientists may have been wrong about the age of

pennington has experienced mental health issues is now to a new lawsuit against a fast food chain accused of serving lemonade with three times more caffeine than a popular energy drink. >> a new jersey family claims that drink killed their daughter. here's abc's derek dennis. this morning, the family of a new jersey college student is suing panera bread, claiming their daughter died after drinking the company's charged lemonade. >> they say the large sized drink contained 390mg of caffeine, more than three cans of red bull. there's no way that she would have purchased that drink had she known of the contents of that drink. the family says 21 year old sarah katz, a junior at upenn, suffered cardiac arrest and died hours after consuming the drink. >> whether or not she understood it had some level of caffeine is unclear. but what she understood that if it did have caffeine, she thought it to have a reasonable amount of caffeine, like something similar to a

coffee. >> the family says katz was under doctor's orders to avoid energy drinks because of her heart condition. known as long type one syndrome diagnosed when she was five, she saw cardiologists every year, and she managed her condition very well. the family's attorney says panera advertises its charged lemonade as a plant based clean beverage with as much caffeine as our dark roast coffee. but she claims the company fails to appropriately warn customers about the ingredients. in a statement to abc news, panera bread responding saying, we are very saddened to learn about the tragic passing of sarah katz at panera. we strongly believe in transparency around our ingredients. we will work quickly to thoroughly investigate this matter. the lawsuit also claims the lemonade is mixed in-house by panera employees suggesting the caffeine content may vary. the family is seeking punitive damages, but did not specify an amount. rhiannon, andrew, derek,
