crazy person off the street like that's a trusted person at the airline. >> we're learning more about the east bay man who attempted to shut off the engines of a plane while it was in the air. good morning on this tuesday, october 24th. start the check of our forecast. andrew hey, good morning. >> so we have a dense fog advisory again in the north bay. this lasting until 10 a.m. we are seeing low visibility in the valleys of napa and sonoma county, especially around santa rosa, petaluma, napa itself, even yountville. so we take a look at visibility. we're down a half a mile in santa rosa, a quarter of a mile in petaluma, three miles in novato. and just like yesterday morning, it's probably going to linger between about nine and 10 a.m. before this cloud cover is really going to lift. it's a cooler start to the day compared to yesterday. we're down to 48 in novato 54 in the city, 57 in san jose with mostly cloudy skies in the south bay. 55 right now in concord. half moon bay coming in at 57 degrees. so keep that fog in the forecast at least through 9 a.m. this morning. but again, just

a community meeting where frustrations boiled over last night. the shooting happened saturday night at a home on shannon way. a 16 year old died and three other teens were injured and no arrests have been made. there are rumors online that there could be more violence connected to that shooting at freedom high school. police say the rumors are not true, but the fear prompted 1000 students to walk out of class yesterday ahead of the community meeting. and that is where parents voiced their frustrations. >> we don't know where the shooter is. we don't know what's happening. we don't know anything. if you think i'm going to let my daughter walk back here, you're crazy. and i think all of these parents probably feel the same. >> the principal confirmed with abc seven that the teen killed was not a student at freedom high school, but students tell abc seven that many of them knew the teen who died. oakland police say. the chief says a school resource officer will be on campus for the rest of the week. >> the east bay pilot accused of

trying to turn off the engines of alaska airlines flight on its way to san francisco is expected to appear in court for the first time today. >> thousand 2059. what is the threat level? the threat is now in the back of the airplane, so we're reduced on the threat level. what was the highest level that occurred? it escalated to a four for irvine, but he's out of the cockpit now. >> the pilot was off duty at the time, but he was riding in the cockpit. this was a flight going from everett, washington to sfo ever as just outside of seattle. the plane had to divert to portland and jobina were learning the man may have been having a mental health emergency. yes reggie. >> so passengers on the flight say the pilot told them 44 year old joseph emerson had a, quote, mental breakdown during the flight. he is originally from washington state but has lived in contra costa county since 2008. emerson works for alaska airlines, which owns horizon air, which is the reason he was

authorized to sit in the jump seat in the cockpit. abc seven went to his home in pleasant hill yesterday. neighbors say he was always kind toward them and they were shocked to hear what happened. >> and he's never had a negative statement about his job or anything like that. so yeah, he's very understanding and well of other people. >> and, you know, we have a grandson with special needs and he's very good to him. >> the airline pilots association says pilots are continuously evaluate throughout their careers, adding, quote, while the investigation is just getting underway, it is important to remember that the airline pilot profession in north america is one of the most highly vetted and scrutinized careers. the faa relies on pilots to self-report any mental health conditions during annual visits with medical examiners. records show emerson received his last medical clearance just

last month. when emerson appears in court today, he's facing 83 counts of attempted murder, one for each person on board. he's also facing dozens of other charges. so we will continue to follow this. kumasi thanks, gibby. >> and we wanted to learn exactly how something like this could happen from a technical aspect. so we got inside a cockpit with an aviation expert with just a pull of a lever and a press of a button. power and fuel can be cut off to an engines plane engine by fire extinguisher workers, which is what emerson is accused of attempting to do. now, normally this function is only to be used in case of a fire or what i would do is i would pull this lever up, which is hard to do. >> i've got to push the safety button down first so it can't happen by accident. when i pull this up, this disk connects the fuel flow going to the engine. this also disconnects the hydro helix and the electrical power. now for this particular plane model, emerson would have had easy access to those controls from where he was sitting in the

cockpit if he succeeded. >> it would have left the plane with no way to fly. normally >> developing news, two israeli hostages released by hamas arrived in tel aviv overnight after they were turned over to the red cross in gaza. their release is raising new hope that others could be freed. the us says they're keeping up efforts to ensure the release of ten americans, along with 200 others being held by hamas. israel is planning a ground invasion in the coming days. president biden says he won't talk about a ceasefire deal until the hostage is are free. israel claims to have struck 300 targets in gaza within 24 hours. some trucks with badly needed water, food and medicine for palestinians made it into gaza over the weekend. >> today, republicans will try again to elect a new house speaker. there are now eight people in the running after a ninth candidate. pennsylvania's dan meuser dropped out yesterday. now, this morning,

the conference will hold a closed door secret ballot vote with the goal of selecting the party's nominee. now, depending on the outcome of that, a floor vote on the nominee could happen later today. it's been almost three weeks now without a speaker. no legislation can reach the floor in the meantime. so there is rising urgency to get someone elected. >> happening today, san francisco mayor london breed is expected to give an update on preparations for the asia pacific economic cooperation, otherwise known as apec, which is coming in just a few weeks. it's about three weeks away. in fact, between 30 and 50,000 people are expected to come to the city, including president biden and several heads of state . officials say a four square block section of downtown san francisco will be locked down. this is around moscone center. businesses are also gearing up, some expecting a boom in customers. others are worried about going dark because of the tight security measures. the summit is the reason behind an immediate push by the city to move the giant ferris wheel from golden gate park to the

prepping the seats with these shirts for fans. but tonight, the warriors will be without one of their star players. draymond green will not play tonight because of a sprained ankle. green suffered the ankle injury during a pickup game here at the chase center before training camp even opened. however tonight we are expecting to see former phenix suns player chris paul as a warrior for the first time in a game that counts as opening night. >> it's a new team, you know. i know what i bring to the table. you know, and that's a that's an edge every time that i play. so it's been like that for a long time. and i don't see it changing. >> on the flip side of things, former warriors player kevin durant should be playing for the suns tonight. it'll be the first time he'll be playing in front of warriors fans here in san francisco since he left the team . now tonight's game tips off at 7:00, but you might want to get here a little bit early just to enjoy everything that comes

along here with the first night back at the chase center live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> thanks, lena. and if you travel to and from chase center later on today, it will be breezy. we'll have winds gusting about 10 to 20mph. and it will be a cool evening with temperatures mainly in the upper 50s for the home opener. temperatures right now, you look at the 24 hour temperature change and we are cooler across the board, almost ten degrees cooler in novato, ten degrees cooler in livermore, seven degrees cooler in the city. so you need that jacket first thing. this morning. there's a little bit of a chill in the atmosphere. upper 40s to lower 50s. that's where a lot of us are beginning this morning and we have dense fog in the north bay that dense fog advisory lasting until 10 a.m. this morning. here's a live look from the exploratorium camera over the city right now. we have mainly clear conditions, but we do have areas of dense fog in the north bay. some cloud cover in the south bay as well. that fog will lift by about 10 a.m. we have bright skies this afternoon and just like yesterday, it's another mild day. by 4 p.m, we'll have those

busy interstate in sacramento. shanice stewart, who is nine months pregnant, by the way, says police pulled her over last week when she checked her rear view mirror. she saw police with their guns drawn when she told her son to stay in the car because she was afraid. police would start shooting if her son made a sudden movement. in the video, you can hear her son pleading for his mom. please >> at that moment, i was at fear that maybe the cops can think that, okay, they're trying to run towards us and they're in danger. they can shoot. >> sacramento police say they mistook the eight year old for a juvenile with several felony warrants. they apologized to the family. stewart is afraid her son will be traumatized and anxious if he ever has another encounter with police. >> the sag-aftra union and major film studios are agreeing to resume negotiations today. it'll be the first time the two sides have spoken since october 11th.

that was when the union and major film studios are reportedly some 500 million apart on streaming service revenue sharing. the united auto workers have escalated their strike members from a factory that makes dodge ram pickup trucks walked out yesterday. about 6800 members halted production at the stellantis plant, which is located just north of detroit. the plant's a big profit center for dodge. the uaw says the plant has the worst offer on the table as a union continues those negotiations with dodge and other big name manufacturers. this is a second surprise strike that's happened during the larger strike. >> it's time the working class gets their fair share and the corporate class pays up. that's it. they keep taking everything. and the workers keep going further and further behind. those days are done. more than 40,000 workers are now picketing as the strike enters its sixth week. >> teamsters are holding a rally outside cruise headquarters in

san francisco. >> members from multiple unions say they want to highlight safety concerns with the company's robotaxis and demand regulations. the national highway traffic safety excuse me, the national highway traffic safety administration even opened an investigation into cruise after reports of the taxis not using proper caution around pedestrians in the roads. when that investigation was announced, cruise said in a statement to abc7 news that their safety record continues to, quote, outperform comparable or human drivers. co working company we work is reportedly being sued for $250 million for breaching their lease agreement in downtown san francisco. according to our media partner, the sf standard, the company stopped paying rent in july and august. we were told it's landlords. the entire space. at 430 california street was vacated. this comes as a company recently lost its president and laid off roughly 300 workers globally within the past year. >> oakland first fridays is coming to a pause. starting in 2024, this well known community

event and vibrant art festival attracts about 30,000 people every month. but now organizers say they are taking a three month hiatus from january to march because of financial constraints. the event supports local artists, food vendors and more than 80% of participants are people of color. on an instagram post, organizers expressed their regret for the disruption and the impact it would have on the community. they are hoping to bring the event back in april. when you think of a cool neighborhood, what comes to mind? >> according to a survey, by time out, san francisco's richmond district ranks as number 27 on a global list. the website says experts ranked neighborhoods from around the world on fun, food, culture and community. the top american rankings go to mid-city and new orleans. la's arts district and fort greene in brooklyn. >> oh, okay. i like all those neighborhoods. all right. richmond, nice. >> yeah, i was reading an

the north bay. we're down to a quarter of a mile in petaluma. novato same spots just like yesterday. that was really dealing with thick fog. we have it once again, half a mile in santa rosa. a bit better in napa, but this dense fog advisory lasting until 10 a.m. a little bit of fog on the coast. we're down to three miles in half moon bay, but not thick enough to warrant a dense fog advisory there. future weather as we go hour by hour. that fog will lift after 10 a.m. we have a lot of sunshine today. it's a mild afternoon. but then we watch a cold front that will move through here on wednesday. it's going to add a lot of cloud cover to our sky tomorrow. so tomorrow is a mostly cloudy day. it's going to move through without any moisture, but it will bring if you look around tahoe, some high elevation snow. we could pick up 1 or 2in of snow at lake level. so a little dusting early on in the season. we'll have that front move through and it will kick up our winds for tomorrow afternoon. here are future tracker wind gusts by wednesday afternoon, we'll likely have those winds gusting about 15 to 30mph as

flight 2059 left everett, washington, for san francisco sunday, packed with 80 passengers. and in the cockpit, 44 year old joseph emerson, an off duty pilot with alaska air, hitching a ride in the jump seat soon after takeoff. officials say emerson tried to cut the plane's engines by pulling the fire extinguisher handles known as the t handles the t handle, which is what this individual tried to pull on each engine actually turns the engines off and prepares it for a fire extinguisher. >> the problem is at high altitude, you can get the engines restarted at low altitude and that could be a fatal result. the crew was able to overpower emerson, handcuffing him to a seat in the cabin. >> we've got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. it doesn't sound like he's causing any issue in the back right now. i think he's subdued. >> the pilots then diverted to portland, where emerson was taken into custody after we did land and the gentleman was escorted off the flight attendant got back on the speaker and said, plain and

bay. we are doing much better when it comes to our visibility. that fog lifts after 10 a.m. for sunshine. then it's a mild afternoon. it's very nice today, heading into wednesday, we'll start to see a lot of changes to our sky. we turn mostly cloudy thanks to a cold front moving through. it won't bring us any moisture. it will likely bring some moisture to the sierra and some snow likely a dusting above about 6000ft. look at the snow forecast wednesday night into thursday morning. not a huge impact when it comes to travel, but just getting us into the season, so to speak. we'll see a couple of inches probably above 7000ft. just an indication of the cold air that's moving in with this front. winds will pick up here locally tomorrow as that front crosses us and brings the additional cloud cover by tomorrow afternoon. they're gusting about 15 to 30mph today. enjoy the mild conditions, the sunshine, once that fog lifts in the north bay after 10 a.m, mainly in the 60s and 70s for daytime highs overnight tonight, we'll have some chilly spots dipping into the 40s in the

gave birth to a baby girl at the stadium. tyler jones is going to watch her cousin, david bell, who plays for the browns and reported she went into labor going into the stadium. then about 20 minutes after kickoff, she had the baby. she says she's thankful and really still overwhelmed by what happened. >> i had a talk with her and i told her she cannot come on this day. i'm still in shock. like everybody comes in and like, you had a crazy day yesterday. and i'm like, yeah, it was crazy. >> how cute is this baby? just resting. the medics at the stadium helped to deliver her. one medic said it was the team's first baby delivered at lucas oil stadium. >> a teacher in the south bay is making sure all students get to

have a fun and inclusive halloween. it's the second year he's hosting a halloween dance for special education students. here's abc seven news. south bay reporter laura martinez with how you can help. what do we say, daniel? >> how are you feeling today? right. yeah. >> special education teacher riley vital has eight students in his class at leyva middle school in san jose. daniel delgado is one of them. for last year, vital had the idea to organize a halloween dance specifically for special needs students. and it's becoming tradition in, you know, we don't usually go to the regular school dances. >> and i said, hey, i want to showcase and really highlight students appreciation. i thought, hey, my students, they want to go to the dance. so let's have a dance. >> last year, six classrooms attended from the evergreen school district. parent rebecca delgado said the dance created an inclusive environment. >> it's nice because he feels like his peers, you know, he doesn't they don't feel isolated and they feel like, you know,
