israel hitting more targets for hamas and hezbollah, as the u.s. points to iran for attacks on u.s. military in the region. overnight two more hostages released by hamas, touching down in tel aviv. what one woman is saying about her kidnapping ordeal as more than 200 people are still being held, including an israeli-american. his parents will join us live on gma. the off duty pilot accused of trying to crash a plane subdued by the flight crew and arrested, now set to face a judge. this morning we're hearing from passengers who were on board. speaker showdown. eight candidates facing off in a secret ballot this morning with the potential government shutdown just over three weeks away. super fog. a deadly pileup outside new orleans. seven people killed when visibility dropped near zero in some spots. this morning ginger is tracking the new super fog threat happening right now.

families of the 200 men, women and children who were kidnapped by hamas on october 7th. they are handing out yellow ribbons, posters to put pressure on the israeli government not just to bring them home, but to prioritize their loved ones. two more just released. this morning for the first time, testimony from one of the hostages taken by hamas. she said she went through hell, describing how she was kidnapped by hamas and taken on the back of a motor bike to what she said was a spider's web of under ground tunnels. speaking together with her daughter at the hospital, she says she was beaten with sticks and had her jewelry taken, held together with five others from the same kibbutz. she said they were given the same food as their captors, given regular medical care an hygiene products. she even said her captors were very friendly. but she's critical of the idea, saying she feels let down for not reading the intelligence correctly before the attack.

she and 75-year-old nora cooper were released by hamas touching down in tel aviv overnight. both of them seen in this video, released by hamas, handed over to recross officials. the two women kidnapped alongside their husbands, who are still believed to be held captive when hamas stormed their kibbutz october 7th. their release bringing the number of freed hostages to just four, as pressure mounts to get the remaining 219, including americans, out. in central israel, people gathering to celebrate the ninth birthday of a boy believed to have been taken hostage along with his mother and grandparents. >> i hope he is celebrating. i hope his mother is hugging him. we must free them now. >> reporter: as israel prepares for a ground invasion of gaza, u.s. and other allies urging a delay, to have time to get hostages out and to get aid distributed to those trapped inside. israel saying it is not

concerned about a delayed ground invasion and will use that extra time to prepare. this comes as israel intensifies its aerial assault on gaza, now more than 5,000 killed and more than 15,000 injured according to hamas run health authorities. israel vowing to eradicate hamas for the october 7th massacre. at least 1,400 murders in israel in addition to the more than 200 hostages taken. this video circulating online shows the deadly after math of an israeli air strike at a school used as a u.n. shelter. for now humanitarian aid is slowly trickling in to gaza. aid agencies warning it's only 1% of the population's daily needs and doesn't include fuel, despite hospitals running out, for fear it could get to hamas. and to the northern border with lebanon, more clashes with the iranian backed militant group hezbollah. overnight the idea of releasing this video they say shows strikes on hezbollah targets.

so officially 219 hostages missing but an israeli official telling me this morning it's likely more than that. also saying that it isn't just those militant groups who took them. civilians crossed over the border during the attack and are now holding israeli citizens. that's going to complicate any hostage negotiation. >> ian, thanks. let's bring in mary bruce and martha raddatz. mary, let me begin with you. the biden administration appears to be doing everything they can to urge israel to delay the ground invasion of gaza. >> reporter: they are. this white house is working around the clock to tamp down tensions. that includes pressing israel to go slowly. the white house is adamant they are not trying to dictate israel's military response but the president has also made clear that his top priority is getting these hostages back home. also getting more humanitarian aid flowing in. so behind the scenes the president and the white house are urging caution. they are pressing israel to delay its ground invasion,

hoping to buy more time to get more hostages out and more aid and critically needed assistance in to gaza. the big question now is whether israel will agree to further delay this. i have asked the white house if they are seeing signs the israelis are receptive to their message. so far no response. >> martha, this is such a desperate situation in so many ways. perhaps the bigger concern, a wider war with iran. >> reporter: exactly, george. there is deep concern this could escalate. the administration wants the israelis to slow down, not just for humanitarian reasons but because the pentagon wants to get capabilities in place to protect our bases in the region. we know they are sending that second carrier strike group and missile defenses to the region. these military assets are not just defensive. there has been an uptick in iranian proxy attacks on our troops. hezbollah and the hutis. the administration is saying there are iranian fingerprints all over them. u.s. official telling me the u.s. is weighing military

options against the proxies and to expect much more u.s. engagement this week. of course, last week we saw that u.s. war ship shoot down huti missiles and drones fired from yemen towards israel. so this is far more than just a threat. george? >> clearly is. okay, thanks very much. we will be talking to the parents of a 23-year-old israeli american citizen still held hostage by hamas in our next hour. michael? >> thank you, george. we turn now to the terrifying incident on an alaska airline flight. an off duty pilot is accused of trying to cut off the engines. he was restrained and is now charged with attempted murder. this morning we are hearing from passengers on that flight. gio benitez has the latest for us. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, michael, good morning. thank goodness for that quick thinking crew on that plane who made sure nothing happened to passengers on board. as you said, michael, this was a terrifying moment. this morning that man faces an incredible amount of charges. this morning the off duty pilot accused of trying to take down a

passenger plane heading to court to face more than 100 charges including 83 counts of attempted murder. 44-year-old joseph emerson allegedly trying to crash an alaska airlines flight from washington to san francisco sunday with 84 people on board. >> we got the guy that tried to shut the engines down out of the cockpit. >> reporter: emerson sitting in the jump seat of the cockpit situated right behind instrument console between the captain and co-pilot. according to a federal official, he allegedly tried to pull the engine fire extinguisher handle located right here before being subdued by the flight crew. >> the t handle, which is what this individual tried to pull on each engine, actually turns the engine off and prepares it for a fire extinguisher. the problem is at high altitude you can get the engines restarted. at low altitude it could be a fatal result. >> reporter: the pilots and crew able to overpower emerson,

removing him from the cockpit, handcuffing him to a seat at the back of the plane. >> doesn't sound like he has any issue in the back. i think he's sedated. >> reporter: the plane diverting to portland, where emerson was arrested. now this morning we are hearing from terrified passengers who were on board. >> i was panicked. i was alone in the back. everyone was shifting around trying to figure out what was happening. after we did land and the gentle man was escorted off, the flight attendant got back on the speaker and said plain and simple, he had a mental breakdown. >> reporter: emerson was reportedly heard saying, i'm not right, before the incident. he was scheduled to fly a 737 when he landed in san francisco. >> the pilots, that's their airplane. they are responsible for every life aboard. believe me, they're going to act instantaneously if they see a threat. that's what happened here. >> reporter: the suspect, a father. neighbors calling him friendly, saying they could never imagine something like this.

>> yeah. he's very understanding of other people. we just can't imagine him doing anything that would hurt anybody. >> reporter: this was so shocking because letting pilots ride in the jump seat is a long held tradition to help them get from point a to point b, george. >> okay, gio. thanks very much. we are going to get the latest on the battle for house speaker. is congress has been at a stand still with a government shutdown looming, a little over three weeks. senior congressional correspondent rachel scott is tracking it all on capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. in just a few hours republicans will meet behind closed doors for the third time in three weeks to try to select a new nominee to become the next speaker of the house. the field is crowded. eight republicans, largely unknown, outside of their districts, now vying for a job that will put them second in line to the presidency. every single candidate but two voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. one of the candidates that didn't is congressman tom emmer.

one of the top republicans in the house. he voted to certify the 2020 election results. that has been a problem for former president trump and his allies, who have launched a pressure campaign against him. the former president did speak by phone to several of the candidates, including emmer and byron donalds, who is considered a favorite among far right conservatives. every candidate has signed a pledge to support the eventual nominee. whoever that is will face significant challenges. there's a looming government shutdown right before thanksgiving, and a fierce debate over whether to provide billions of dollars in aid to ukraine and israel. michael? >> whoever it is has a lot of challenges ahead. thank you very much for that. we're going to turn to the deadly multicar pileup in louisiana. transportation officials are investigating after a so-called super fog lowered visibility so much that dozens of cars crashed on an interstate near new orleans. trevor ault is here with the story. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: super fog is a type of severe weather phenomenon that we don't often see. basically a mix of dense fog and

smoke. this didn't just cause a few drivers problems, it led to a deadly pileup of more than 150 vehicles. this morning, stunning images from a frightening scene monday on this louisiana highway. seven people dead and nearly 30 others injured after a multivehicle pileup caused by a weather phenomenon known as super fog. more than 150 cars colliding, starting fires on the road, leaving cars burned out and drivers stranded along i-55 outside new orleans. >> people were screaming for help. >> reporter: rescue teams scours the scene, searching for any remaining victims. >> our troopers and emergency first responders have been working diligently up there to not only investigate all of the crashes that are involved, but also clear the roadway. >> reporter: this was the view from behind the wheel. police say these extreme hazardous conditions were likely caused by smoke from marsh fires burning nearby mixed with

already dense fog permeating the atmosphere, making it extremely difficult to see. visibility in some spots dropping to near zero. this time lapse video showing the dramatic approach as it rolled across the region. one woman said she noticed a truck quickly approaching in her rear view mirror. >> i was able to move out of their way somehow. 90% of the cars that were surrounding me were hit. >> reporter: that collision sparking multiple fires. >> everything felt a little more chaotic. tires started popping from the fires and everything. >> reporter: last march, a similar situation played out in florida. police say super fog captured on this drone video led to three fatalities and a 15 car pileup on i 95. this pileup in louisiana was so large it shut down three highways. officials say a 24 mile stretch of i 55 is going to remain shutdown for the foreseeable future. >> thank you, trevor. now to ginger with the latest on a new super fog threat.

saying she went through hell, describing how she was kidnapped by hamas and taken on the back of a motor bike. she was beaten, robbed then taken to a spider of tunnels. she said they were given regular medical care, food and hygiene products. she said her captors were friendly but we have no way of knowing what the conditions or treatment is like for the other 219 hostages. she and 75-year-old noris cooper, seen in this video released by hamas, were handed over to red cross officials. as israel prepare force a likely ground invasion, the u.s. and other allies are urging delay, to allow time to get the rest of the hostages out and aid in. israel intensifying its assault on gaza, vowing to eradicate hamas after the october 7th massacre. there have been more clashes with hezbollah in lebanon to israel's north as well. there are fears this conflict could spread. for the people here, the families, the loved ones and the friends of the kidnapped, their number one priority is to get

their loved ones home. in the words of one woman i have been speaking to here, we're all broken. michael? >> you're right about that. ian, we are happy they are released and hopefully more to follow. thank you. we are going to turn to the off duty pilot accused of trying to crash a passenger plane. let's go back to our transportation correspondent gio benitez with more. good morning, gio. >> reporter: hey, michael. good morning again. yeah, that off duty pilot is facing a slew of charges for very serious incident that has shocked even the most seasoned aviation experts. this morning the off duty pilot accused of trying to take down a passenger plane heading to court to face more than 100 charges including 83 counts of attempted murder. 44-year-old joseph emerson allegedly trying to crash an alaska airlines flight from washington to san francisco on sunday with 84 people on board. >> we've got the guy that tried to shut the incident down.

>> reporter: emerson sitting in the cockpit situated right behind the instrument console between the captain and co-pilot. according to a federal official, he allegedly tried to pull the engine fire extinguisher handle located right here before being subdued by the flight crew. the pilots and crew able to overpower emerson, removing him from the cockpit, handcuffing him to a seat at the back of the plane. the plane eventually diverting to portland where emerson was arrested. >> after we did land and the gentle man was escorted off the flight attendant got back on the speaker and said, plain and simple, he had a mental breakdown. >> reporter: emerson was reported by heard saying, i'm not right, before the incident. he was scheduled to fly a 737 when he landed in san francisco. that off duty pilot will be in court later today. it's important to say this, it appears the crew did everything right to keep those passengers safe and that plane in the air,

robin. >> thank goodness for that crew. gio, thank you. now to the housing market and the impact of high mortgage rates on the classic rent or buy debate. elizabeth schulze is in washington, going to crunch sop numbers for us. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: this is frustrating for aspiring homeowners. by one measure, it's never been more expensive to buy a new home compared to renting one. data from a firm that tracks real estate prices shows the average monthly cost of a new lease is just under $2,200. average new payment on a new home is just above $3,300. in other words, it's about 52% more expensive to buy than to rent right now. that is the biggest difference on record. now the key reason this gap is widening is those higher mortgage rates which can add hundreds of dollars on to your home bill. if you're buying a $430,000 home with 10% down your monthly payment is about 60% more today

he was last seen by anybody that we have heard from on saturday morning october 7th. he was seen with his arm blown off after being in a bunker with 28 other people, we think, most of whom were killed. the bunker came under heavy gun fire, grenades were being thrown in. at 9 a.m. hamas gun men came in, took hirsch and two other boys, pulled them out, loaded them onto a pickup truck. it left towards gaza. that's the last we know. >> did you hear anything from him while that was going on? >> yes. >> at 8:11 in the morning we had heard bomb sirens in jerusalem where we live, around 8. when we got the all clear that we could come out of our bomb shelter that we have in our home, i went to turn on my phone, which i normally don't use on the jewish sabbath, but i knew hirsch and his friend were camping out so i needed to make sure they were okay. i turned on my phone at 8:20. two what's app notes popped up.

they had come in at 8:11, two consecutive ones. one said, i love you. the other said, i'm sorry. so i immediately knew something was unfolding that was horrible. and then we subsequently found out that this huge massacre was taking place at this music festival, which ironically was called the music festival for unity and love. we also recently received a video of the actual kidnapping. >> that must have been so hard to watch. >> john has watched it many times and he can explain why he gains strength from that. i didn't want to see it, but once it was going out there, i knew i had to see it once so that i could -- that it wouldn't come to me in the wrong way. so for me, i mean, what parent wants to see their child -- critically wounded. >> you gained strength from it?

>> in a weird way, i did. no parent should ever be subjected to this sight. that being said, and i know now from witnesses who were in the same bunker, three survivors who have each shared the same story of what happened the massacre that took place there. knowing he spent an hour to an hour and a half being subjected to this massacre and he then gets up with an arm freshly blown off and walks on his own two feet, under his own strength, towards this truck and uses his weak hand, his only hand now, to pull himself onto the truck while bloodied, but looking sort of composed. it gives me a sense of, he's got a perseverance and fortitude that we hope carries him through this. >> an ever since that moment you all have been on a nonstop mission to save hirsch. >> it's 18 days ago. honestly, george, we don't know

this one is something we've been seeing develop in the last couple of months. really dry conditions leaving memphis tennessee to show case their lowest on record for the mississippi river. a lot of that has to do with drought from the ohio river, missouri and then, of course, the southern part which led, in part, to a lot of the wild fires which have combined with the fog. this morning we still have fog advisories. i-12 is the area they're most concerned about. let's get a check now little closer to home. >> we all just need a moment. we had to go over there and hug their parents and thank them for their message. now we have a possible game changer in cervical cancer treatment.

11,000 cases are diagnosed annually in the u.s. now researchers say they have found the first major development in care in nearly 20 years. our medical correspondent dr. darien sutton is here. we need some good news right now. what's so encouraging about this? >> good morning, robin. this is tremendous news in the world of cervical cancer, mainly because this is a world of medicine that has had limited abilities or advancements within the past decade or two. so in this finding, they found existing therapy weres found to benefit those with specific types of cervical cancer. they looked at 500 women and followed them for 20 years. they all had a form of locally advanced cervical cancer which means it has grown beyond what would normally be surgically removed but has not extended to the rest of the body. they gave half of these women standard chemotherapy an gave the other half an additional form of chemotherapy called induction chemotherapy. they found the half they gave

that additional form of chemotherapy had an additional risk of death and progression by up to 35%. >> as with most cancers, early detection is so key. it's not a guarantee but it's so key. there's some preventible measures that can be taken. >> there are. the most important thing is the average age of diagnosis is from 34-44. screening and prevention need to start earlier, thing likes pap smears and hpv testing which ideally start at the age of 21. most important way to prevent this is via vaccination against hpv which theoretically all are going to be exposed to. getting vaccinated by this is key. >> other headlines? >> bladder cancer coming up soon in the pipeline. >> you're the best. all right. see you on gma3. >> thank you. >> michael? now to our series finding the positive in the negative. this morning an exclusive look at a startling new harvard report finding 18 to 25-year-olds suffer anxiety and

depression at twice the rate of 14 to 17-year-olds. deborah roberts is here with that. good morning. >> good morning, michael. twice the rate. wow. this is a finding that caught researchers off guard. we've been shining a light on adolescents and young teens struggling with their mental health. what we didn't realize is young adults have been struggling even more so, fixated on financial pressures and trying to fine meaning in their life as they step out into an uncertain world. >> hi. i'm audrey. >> i'm jordan. >> i'm daria and i'm 23 years old. >> reporter: they are among the brightest, daria, jerome and andre. >> working in research. >> i am going to be a senior in college but dropped out to start my own startup. >> i'm studying political science. >> reporter: but this morning they are also raising concerns about the state of their generation's mental health. >> there are things that can make us overwhelmed and stressed out. >> reporter: some researchers aren't at all surprised. a new report from harvard's making caring common project says 18 to 25-year-olds are about twice as likely as 14 to

17-year-olds to suffer from anxiety and depression. psychologist richard weisbord directed that study. young adults you figure they are coming out of college, maybe starting their first new jobs. why are they so vulnerable? >> high rates of loneliness. it's a world that seems off the rails to them. i think it's unclarity about their job prospects. i think social media turbo charges all of this. >> reporter: after talking with more than 700 young adult, the survey found more than half sa trying to figure out where you're going to live and how you're going to afford to live. >> everyone is super ambitious and that creates a little bit of a toxic environment where people feel like it's a very comparative space. >> and though the internet may connect them, these young adults

say they crave in-person interaction. >> i remember my parents telling me about bowling leagues and being able to go to the mall and then and doing things like that in real life. but now when you meet someone, you exchange instagrams. >> while the numbers may sound bleak, weissbourd says there are some positives in the data. what gives you hope for them? >> i think this is a very psychologically aware generation. they're very articulate about their feelings, and they may break the stigma about mental health that we have in this country. >> that's how people make connections, right? it's like you have anxiety. oh, my gosh, me too. >> everyone really is more used to showing their emotions on their sleeve. and i think that's like a really good step in the right direction. >> i've made your hope in our generation, even if it's so great to hear the positive. >> and another one is that once they realize that they're dealing with anxiety, if these young people step outside themselves, they say that service will make a big difference. michael volunteering , adding something to your community and you in turn get something back and it cures
