golden lottery ticket at. abc news in new york. >> this is a america this morning. >> good wednesday morning, everyone. i'm rhiannon ally. >> and i'm andrew dymburt. we begin with new details about the talks underway to free more hostages being held by hamas in gaza. >> americans are among them. and the negotiations are being described as intense and they come as conditions grow even more desperate inside of gaza, where the world health organization says at least six hospitals have been forced to shut down because of a lack of fuel for power. israel says hamas has fuel stockpiles but refuses to distribute them. meanwhile the pentagon is releasing more information about the threat us troops are facing in the region. >> this morning, more american air power is arriving in the middle east, including f-16 from the new jersey air national guard. a group known as the jersey devils. >> it is our aim to avoid any

regional expansion of israel's conflict with hamas. but we stand ready and prepared to protect and defend our partners and our interests and will act to do so. last week, the uss carney shot down missiles and drones over the red sea, launched by iranian backed houthi rebels in yemen. >> the pentagon now confirms those missiles could have reached israel. the pentagon also revealing 13 attacks on us military bases in iraq and syria in the last week with dozens of minor injuries. an iranian backed militant group claims us bases in the united arab emirates and kuwait will also be targeted in response to the israeli hamas war. >> if iran or its proxies attack us personnel anywhere. make no mistake, we will defend our people. we will defend our security swiftly and decisively. >> the pentagon is also preparing for the potential mass evacuation of hundreds of thousands of americans in the middle east if the war expands. meanwhile, new efforts to free more hostages in gaza, including

american, is taken by hamas during the october seventh attack. sources say talks are ongoing between the us, israel, egypt and qatar to secure the release of a large number of people. the us has been pushing israel to delay a ground invasion of gaza. abc's matt gutman is along the border and you can see armor starting to prepare a maneuver. >> and just on the other side over there behind those armored personnel carriers, israeli troops are preparing for combat. they say they're getting closer and closer to moving into gaza here. >> israel is preparing for a potential influx of war casualties. this under ground parking lot has been converted to a hospital. >> while we managed to fully equip this place, we're talking about the hospital, a 130 beds at the end there are intensive and intensive care unit in gaza facing relentless airstrike as more hospitals are shutting down , running out of fuel for power. >> an estimated 5500 pregnant women are due to give birth in the coming weeks. their emergency delivery kits have yet to arrive. the kits include

>> johnson getting 128 votes, but 44 republicans voted for others, including kevin mccarthy , who was ousted from the job. three weeks ago. mccarthy, late yesterday floating a plan in which he would return as speaker with jim jordan as assistant speaker. that came after congressman tom emmer dropped out of the race yesterday, just four hours after being nominated and emmer withdrawing after former president trump came out against him. emmer no fan of trump loyalists, voted to certify the 2020 election results for joe biden, politico reports. after emmer withdrew, trump was quoted saying he's done. it's over. i killed him. abc's rachel scott tried to ask the new nominee, mike johnson, if he still stands by his vote to overturn the 2020 election results. alexi supporters, including congresswoman virginia fox, telling rachel to shut up.

earlier, one lawmaker appeared to be stunned by all the chaos. we are hopelessly divided. >> we are struggling to find our way to continue to go through this exercise in is. i think, existential threat to the. know, to the constitution or republic. >> now, the full house is expected to vote on johnson's nomination today, but it's unclear if he has enough votes to be elected on the house floor. andrew >> all right, ike, thank you. and sources say former white house chief of staff mark meadows has testified before the federal grand jury investigating interference in the 2020 election. sources say meadows received immunity and told prosecutors trump was being dishonest when he claimed on election night that he had won because the final results were not in. and meadows sources say he testified and told trump in the weeks after the election that fraud allegations were turning out to be baseless.

meadows testimony is an extraordinarily significant development. >> in the days and weeks between the 2020 election and january sixth, no individual was closer to donald trump than mark meadows. meadows testified that he never once heard donald trump acknowledge that he lost the election, not even privately. >> overnight, trump responded to our reporting, denying that meadows told him the fraud claims were baseless. meanwhile another trump ally has pleaded guilty in the georgia election interference case. lawyer jenna ellis has pledged to cooperate with prosecutors as new details after that shocking moment on a flight from washington to san francisco. >> an off duty pilot allegedly trying to crash the plane. and now comes word that he mentioned recently using psychedelic mushrooms. this morning, an alaska airlines pilot has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges, accused of trying to shut off the engines during a flight to san

francisco. >> enter a not guilty plea on all counts. >> new video shows 44 year old joseph emerson being removed from the plane, which had taken off from everett, washington, sunday. emerson was off duty sitting in the cockpit jumpseat when authorities say he stood up, said i'm not okay and tried to pull the plane's t handles. the pilot then grabbed emerson's wrists and wrestled with emerson for a few seconds for control of the aircraft before emerson stopped. officials say it had emerson pulled the handles all the way down, the plane would have turned into a glider within seconds. court documents show. emerson told investigators he had not slept in 40 hours, felt he was having a nervous breakdown and mentioned using psychedelic mushrooms. he's about 48 hours earlier. >> no fight, no commotion, just nervous passengers, but quietly nervous. >> emerson was removed from the cockpit, reportedly asking a flight attendant to cuff him. the flight diverted to portland, one of the 80 passengers on board called the situation scary

scare for sheriff's deputies approaching a minivan. >> in all we saw was snail and eyes. it was looking right at us, a snout and eyes. >> that's what deputies in avery county, north carolina, saw when they approached this minivan after getting a call about a bear that had managed to break in and get trapped inside. the deputies using rope to pull the front door of the van open and out came a fully grown black bear. she didn't go far, though. standing on her back legs, keeping her eyes glued on that van, didn't really know what to think at the moment, but it's kind of scary situation. that's when the deputies realized there were two cubs still in the van. with a little coaxing. they were able to get the cubs out and they quickly rejoined mom and a third cub in that backyard. all of this a good reminder, not to leave food in your car and always lock the doors just because you're out in the mountains and you don't think you need to lock your doors. >> you need to go ahead and lock your doors to your vehicle. >> here's the kicker. that van
