are believed to be dead in the small town of lewiston, maine. dozens more are injured. >> authorities tell us there are at least two shooting scenes. the local bar, as well as a bowling alley in town. president biden has been briefed on the situation and now the manhunt is on for this gunman as multiple towns are under shelter in place. lockdown orders. >> abc seven news reporter j.r stone is in the newsroom digging into what we know about the suspected gunman and what's happening in maine right now. j.r. dan and alma, it is just after 2 a.m. in maine and there has been an all out manhunt for this person of interest. >> the fbi is involved. roadblocks are set up, but still no sign of him. patrol vehicles racing through the streets as a manhunt is now underway in maine after a mass shooting wednesday night. we did respond to the town of lewiston. >> it's going to be spare time recreation for an active shooter incident. >> we have active shooter of all injuries. >> lpd on scene.

>> please say the search centers around this man, robert card, a former firearms instructor with a history of military service. he's also a mental health history, including a two week stay this summer at a facility where he allegedly made threats about carrying out a shooting at a national guard facility. his white subaru was recovered and but he was not card is considered armed and dangerous. >> he is a person of interest. >> authorities say shootings appear to have unfolded at two locations, including a local bar and grill. and a bowling alley. some of those scenes were described by first responders. if you could head to the area swease on lincoln street and assist the crews over there. >> they're reporting 16 people with gunshot wounds. and i got one elderly female gunshot wound to the hip. >> someone told me that there was a children's bowling event going on at the bowling alley, which is extreme tragic. if that's the case. >> we have literally hundreds of police officers working around

the south bay gathering tonight at an intersection in san jose. a pregnant mother killed last night, police say, in a hit and run crash. it happened right by th westfield mall. the medical examiner office tells abceven news it learned that a one day old has dd at the hospital tonight. initially, the baby was alive after th tragedy, but has now passed away. we're still waitg for more information. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez spoke with san jose's mayor and has more on the grief. people are feeling there tonight. >> a group of loved ones gathered to mourn the sudden loss of a soon to be mother killed in a hit and run crash. at last report, police say her baby survived but remains in critical condition. san jose police say on tuesday, around 8:24 p.m, officers respond to a major injury crash at a busy intersection of blossom hill and winfield boulevard. police say the woman's vehicle was traveling eastbound on blossom hill when it crashed with a stolen sedan. police say two men

fled on foot immediately after the crash. mayor matt mehan said it's unimaginable, to be honest. >> when i heard the news, i was just stopped in my tracks. >> the san jose fire department said they transport treated the pregnant woman to trauma. mehan said no family should have to suffer this avoidable tragedy. >> frankly, i'm also angry. we see far too many traffic related accidents. the best information we have right now is this involved a stolen vehicle and speeding. >> we know a group of people have gathered at the scene. do you have any message to those that loved her? >> my heart goes out to you and i'm just devon stated by this news. our city is praying for you, and i know they're going to be many people in san jose who come together to support this family. >> her family asked for privacy during this time. they lit candles, sang songs and consoled one another in san jose, lauren martinez, abc seven news. new at

11. >> police in oakley say they've arrested a person in connection to the high school house party shooting that killed a 16 year old and injured three other teens. investigators say 18 year old jason walaza from antioch was just booked into jail earlier this evening. the us marshals service helped in the arrest. the shooting happened this past saturday night in oakley. police say the 16 year old boy who was killed was a student at liberty high school in brentwood. the suspect's bail was set at $1.1 million. all right. >> let's get into tonight's abc seven advancer at 11, it's our way. we like to get you in the know on some of the stories that you'll be seeing much more of in the days to come. we'll start tonight with the ongoing actors strike. members of sag-aftra, that's the union representing actors, held a rally today in front of san francisco city hall. the union and major film studio studios will meet again tomorrow in the hope of ending this 104 day strike. both sides are reportedly far apart in how to split the profits of tv and movie streaming. if a deal is

successful, many film and television series would be able to resume production. but for the moment, it's all still on hold. our next abc seven advancer at 11 is the growing pushback to driverless cars in california. we're now seeing los angeles city leaders question the viability of robo taxis in their town. it's all after the sudden dmv suspension yesterday of cruise's driverless permit in san francisco. and now a los angeles council member is introducing a motion to limit the expansion of driverless vehicles in los angeles. waymo currently operates its robo taxis there he is citing safety concerns or citing, rather, safety concerns and labor issues costing people jobs. if we can protect jobs and we can protect the safety, we can have a conversation. >> but right now, we're not having that conversation. >> these autonomous vehicles, these auto taxis are not ready for prime time. the testing should not ■be done on the publc streets where our children, our grandchildren, our spouses are walking. we are not test monkey

aston bennett is the president of the castro merchants association. >> she says this year will have a family friendly focus and feature everything from costume contest to face painting to spooky movie marathons. after being toned down for several years. aston bennett hopes this weekend will help bring people back into the neighborhood. for many in the castro, though, halloween is a lot more than just a weekend to come out and have fun, though they tell me it's a part of this rich neighborhood's identity that history stretches back decades all the way to the 1940s and includes part of aston bennett's family. she tells us her grandfather was the one who initially brought the holiday into the community. he would bring in a flatbed truck and we'd have a kids costume contest and a pie eating contest. >> and he had made this enormous papier maché dinosaur called stanislaus that somebody would get into and parade the kids around the neighborhood. >> organizers stressed that this year's event will be far different from the nighttime halloween parties. the neighborhood became famous for in the past, sidewalks. those were ultimately shut down after

a mass shooting in 2006 and several other instances of violence. city officials say in order for that type of event to make a comeback, things would have to be radically different. >> i think we're going to have to do a lot of planning. it's going to require a lot of public safety support, but a lot of thoughtfulness about how to how to roll it out in a way that is safe and respectful of the neighborhood. >> as for this weekend, castro leaders say everyone is welcome a chance to have fun and just be who they are in the castro has already, like a flamboyant, colorful place to be. >> and everybody is already comfortable and being themselves. but halloween kind of takes it a step further in the castro. >> tim johns, abc seven news. >> beat the speaker after weeks of searching for a new house speaker, the republicans make their pick. what to know tonight. >> and a historic hurricane slams into mexico's pacific coast. we're surveying the damage tonight of this category five storm. plus a heartwarming story. >> pen pals since elementary school now meet at long last.

the house of representatives. now officially has a new speaker . representative mike johnson from louisiana was elected 56th speaker of the house after the

three previous nominees failed to secure the role it has been nearly a month of republican infighting inside the house. representative johnson has been a member of congress for six and a half years, making him one of the least experienced speakers to ever serve. >> he is from louisiana. and you're right, a lot of people don't know about him. that's because he's been pretty much in the background. but we have is a guy that is very conservative, anti-abortion, anti gay marriage trump supporter. sure. that's got some people nervous. >> representative johnson said one of his top priorities as speaker is to address the upcoming spending deadline to avoid a government shutdown. >> on governor newsom's week long tour of china continued today with a meeting with the chinese president. newsom and xi jinping met in beijing today. the governor is in china promoting climate cooperation between the two countries. now the meeting is getting worldwide attention because it comes after years of heightening tensions between the us and china. of

course, newsom is the first us governor to meet with xi since jerry brown back in 2017. president biden has said that he would meet with him if he comes to the apec summit in san francisco next month. newsom tells cnn tonight that he is hopeful she will attend. >> building a better bay area isn't something done overnight, but it can be a long process. but it's important to highlight the progress along the way. tonight, we want to share some of those breakthroughs, starting with work to get safe housing for those who need it most. the oasis inn was a pilot for hotels in san francisco to start sheltering the homeless. what started off as the city renting 25 rooms in 2020 has now grown to the entire hotel housing families in need. the saint anthony's foundation recently agreed to acquire the shelter and continue its partnership with the city with housing, the homeless. >> and i'm really proud that this is just another opportunity to ensure that families have a safe, affordable place to call home. >> the city of san francisco so far funds 312 affordable housing

units, a family shelter and traditional housing. let's stay on that beat for our next abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough. our team is checking in with state officials tonight. they want to see a complete overhaul with the way san francisco approves new housing. a review from a top california housing department just found san francisco's policies and politic shefs get in the way of construction of apartments and condos. but the breakthrough here is the report identifies a long list of actions for the city to correct the problems, including rewriting local laws, governing permits and appeals. if san francisco's current rate continues, it will miss its goal to build more than 82,000 new homes by 2031. and our final abc7 building a better bay area breakthrough is looking ahead to help you get ready for this winter's incoming storms. we are checking in with teams in the south bay to see all the work that they've been doing to prevent last year's storm surges from happening again throughout the past summer, we've worked at 50 locations across the county

to maintain our waterways and clear them of debris. or at the lower silver creek, where valley water just wrapped up a flood protection project. it's to keep water flowing without any blockages. when the rain comes, five sandbag locations can be found on valley water's website and are now open across the county. they will remain open through april when any rain subsides as hurricane otis rips across mexico's southern pacific coast as a powerful and dangerous cat five hurricane alejo's album. terrifying. >> otis is the strongest hurricane on record to hit mexico's pacific coastline right now. little is known about the extent of the damage, but so far there have been no reports of any deaths. so that is at least encouraging. that could, of course, change. the storm did knock out power in some areas along with communication networks by daybreak tomorrow,

we'll know more about the damage there. and up in the sierra, our first look at snow. this is from uc berkeley's central sierra snow lab. today. you can see some pretty big flakes actually falling there. and with that snow came, the first chain controls on the local highways earlier today. those now have been cleared on both 8-80 and highway 50, but how about that? some snow, whiplash. >> weren't we just in summer last week with super high temperatures? >> so, so true. crazy so let's check on it all. yeah. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. it really is a bit of a whipsaw here. >> yeah, it really felt like the seasons changed to winter quickly. and dan and i want to show you live doppler seven as we take a look at the snow that was coming down in the sierra over the last six hours. even tahoe got in on some of this. so that snow is winding down now. and we have the chill settling in as we look at live doppler seven. we had a couple of showers go through parts of the north bay, even places like mountain view reporting a few sprinkles. earlier today, 407

inch in napa, ukiah, napa, 500 excuse me. now the clouds are clearing out of the north and we are going to continue to see those clouds push on out of here after that cold front passes through 40s and 50s on those temperatures, 61 in san jose want to turn your attention quickly to what's left of otis which it has dissipated. it was a powerful category five hurricane as it made landfall near acapulco. the strongest hurricane to hit mexico's coast on the pacific side obviously brought heavy rain, flooding issues across that region. all is quiet right now here in the bay area from our exploratorium camera, seeing a lovely view of san francisco skies clear overnight. chilly morning ahead, mainly sunny tomorrow with below average high temperatures. and we are looking at colder mornings through the weekend. so first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures will be in the 30s to 50s. the coldest spots will be up to our north in the mid to upper 30s. so before you get

going, make sure you bundle up because you're going to need that extra layer tomorrow afternoon. we're looking at cooler than average high temperatures, low 60s to low 70s . but certainly a lot of sun out there. now, we're going to fast forward to the morning temperatures for friday. we're expecting still another cold morning. look at saturday, even colder or downright cold. i mean, we're talking near freezing in petaluma, santa rosa, not far behind. so that is when we could see some patchy frost. all right. the walk to end alzheimer's is happening in san ramon this saturday. our very own dan will be the emcee of the event. 50 degrees at 8 a.m. if you're taking part in this walk, it's just going to be bright and sunny and perfect. walking weather really keeping it on the cool side as the walk begins in the low 50s and eventually milder, low 60s the accuweather seven day forecast that chilly morning followed by a sunny day temperatures will remain below average as we head towards the weekend. cold start. bright day saturday gusty in the hills on sunday. that's when fire danger will be elevated. and then as we head towards
