>> when we were running. why? >> like why do people do this? >> the death toll, rising communities locked down overnight. >> police urgently searching overnight for a person of interest with military experience. police saying he has a history of mental health struggles. the surveillance images and other clues in this case. and what witnesses are revealing and our experts, including former fbi agents, weigh in on this special edition of america. >> this morning. from abc news in new york. >> this is america this morning. >> good thursday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. >> and i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the mass shootings in maine at two locations, police overnight searching for a person of interest believed to be armed and dangerous. at least 20 people have been killed, dozens of people are injured. >> all of this unfolding in the small city of lewiston, maine, a college town. the first shooting scene, a children's event at a bowling alley.

>> and in recent hours, police have revealed several new details about the person of interest in this case and his past. and this morning, a mass shooting tragedy unfolds in maine's second largest city. police in lewiston responding to shootings in at least two locations there are multiple scenes in the city to include multiple hospitals. >> a lot of witnesses were speaking with. >> police identified robert card as a person of interest. authorities say he has a history of military service and is a firearms instructor and was treated at a mental health facility over the summer after allegedly saying that he was hearing voices. >> if people see him, they should not approach card or make contact with him in any way. >> police were looking for card overnight, triggering a shelter in place, order in lewiston and neighboring lisbon, maine, where police say they found this white subaru. they were looking for throughout the night. the car seen with the door open and lights on. police as far south as new hampshire setting up roadblocks. authorities earlier

releasing these surveillance images showing the gunman at one of the shooting locations. >> it looks like to me an ar 15 or some version of it. it looks like to me that he's got some sort of extended magazine mean. i mean, typically those weapons, you can maybe shoot up to 25 or 30 rounds with a standard magazine. >> the first call came in around 7:00 from a bowling alley that was hosting a youth night for a kids bowling league. >> thought it was a balloon, had my back turned to the door, and as soon as i turned and saw it was not a balloon, he was holding a weapon. i just looked it down the lane and i slid basically into where the pins are and climbed up in the machine and was on top of the machines for about ten minutes until the cops got there. >> one witness says she heard a loud bang before her father, a retired cop, corralled her and her family into a corner. >> she was grazed by a bullet. while we were running.

>> i never thought i'd grow up and get a bullet in my leg. and it's just like like why? like why do people do this? >> the second shooting scene, a local restaurant, is about four miles from the bowling alley. authorities did not reveal a motive. overnight, the atf is among the agencies responding. president biden and attorney general garland have been briefed. lewiston is a relatively small city of just 36,000 people, which experts say could be an advantage to investigators. >> you're going to probably or do have survivors in each location, i presume so. with that, you can start tracking this guy. >> authorities say before being treated at that mental health facility over the summer, robert card threatened to carry out a shooting at a national guard facility in saco, maine. meanwhile, a local newspaper spoke to the owner of one of the shooting scenes, a restaurant she says people were playing cornhole when shots rang out up to 16 victims were reportedly

found at that restaurant. lewiston's sister city, auburn, maine is where a reunification center has been established for people looking to find loved ones. >> in the hours since the shooting. the local mayor speaking overnight a significant amount of shock going on with people that were actually witnesses. >> obviously, when i was bringing people in that were looking for their loved ones, there's fear, there's panic. of course, there's worry. understandably you know, we're going to really focus inside of our community and we're going to heal our community. we're going to persevere. we're going to get through this. you know, something like this doesn't just get solved overnight and nobody can expect it to. but we got to really strong community. we've overcome a lot and we'll overcome this. >> the mayor also said there were witnesses of all ages to the shooting, as we've been speaking overnight with abc news contributor richard frenkel. he's a former special agent in charge at the fbi. and we spoke about this very investigation on there are dozens of people dead and injured, a killer on the loose. and authorities say that they have named a person of interest, robert card, who said to be a firearms expert. now he

has not been named a suspect, but the fact that he has a military history and weapons training, does that change how law enforcement might approach him? um, you know, law enforcement's always going to be careful about approaching anyone, especially somebody who is just allegedly killed, 20 or more people and injured possibly up to 60. >> however, the fact that he's got that training will definitely be in the back of the minds of every agent, police officer, detective, that is out searching for him. >> and then just hours after this mass shooting, law enforcement went ahead and released the name and picture of this person of interest. how common or uncommon is that to alert the public about a specific person, though not a suspect that quickly? >> it is unusual that it was that quick, but i think that goes to the fact that they believe that this suspect actually did have the weapon and did fire that that weapon. it's also killing power that he used against innocent civilians and

they don't want those innocent civilians or any other innocent civilians to be approached and to get into harm's way. officials, they not only put out his name, but they also did a lockdown not only of the town where he was, but the town where they found the car. but now it's the entire county. >> and what are some of the challenges of conducting a massive investigation in search like this, especially in late night, early morning hours? >> the issues that they're going to have is it's dark. you know, it's obvious that it's going to be very hard for them to locate this individual in the dark in a very sparse, highly populated suburban area or rural area in maine. you know, it's winding roads, it's fields, it's farms. you know, he could hide anywhere or thanks there to richard frankel with at least 20 dead, the lewiston massacre will go down as one of the deadliest mass shootings in us history.

>> the worst of course, was the las vegas massacre back in 2017. 58 people died there and then 49 people died at the pulse nightclub, 32 at virginia tech. 27 at sandy hook elementary and 26 people died at the first baptist church in sutherland springs, texas. >> police have said the person of interest in the lewiston shootings struggled with his mental health and experts have called mental health a growing crisis in this country. the issue has already been in the headlines this week. abc's ike ejiochi is here now with more. ike good morning, andrew. >> as you said, mental health is front and center in stories we've been following this week. first in massachusetts, police have been searching for a man wanted in the death of his wife, 33 year old aaron pennington, an air force veteran, has been on the run since sunday when his wife was found dead in their home. police say pennington had mental health struggles and his wife was reportedly threatening to move to texas with their four their four kids also this week, another big headline around

mental health, the cdc releasing a report warning that health care workers are experiencing a mental health crisis with levels of anxiety, depression and other symptoms higher than before the pandemic. now the issue is getting attention on the presidential campaign. republican nikki haley spoke last night. >> i'll tell you, the world is on fire. yeah, i mean, we see it. we see it with wars around the world. we see it in our schools. we see it with protests on college campuses. we're seeing it here. but what does now, one other note on this issue, the nine, eight, eight suicide and crisis hotline that was established last year, officials have seen such high demand they were forced to limit their services. >> andrew, i thank you. >> we'll return to maine in just a few minutes for more on the deadly rampage and count on abc news for continuing coverage throughout the day. >> here's a story we're also following. one third of the us auto workers strike may be resolved. the united auto workers have reached a deal with ford, including a 25% pay raise

and also pension improvements. the proposed agreement still has to be approved by union members. now to the middle east. >> israeli troops launched a brief ground raid into northern gaza overnight. israel says troops hit several militant targets in order to prepare the battlefield before a widely expected ground invasion. meanwhile, this photo is making headlines. it shows the leaders of hezbollah and hamas meeting in lebanon in with a picture of iran's supreme leader on the wall above them. iranian backed militants have been launching attacks in recent days on us troops in the region, but the focus remains on the hostages being held in gaza. the this morning possible movement in the effort to bring home more than 220 hostages, including american , is taken by hamas militants during the october 7th attack in israel. qatar's prime minister says negotiations to release hostages are progressing. it comes as israel delays its ground invasion of gaza for now amid significant pressure from

the white house urgently pushing for more time to free hostages. >> israel has the right and i would add responsibility to respond to the slaughter of their people. but that does not lessen the need for to operate in a line with the laws of war. >> president biden says he spoke with prime minister benjamin netanyahu again yesterday about the hostages. foreign nationals wishing to leave gaza and the importance of focusing on what comes after this crisis. biden also called for an end to attacks by israeli settlers on palestine ions in the west bank, a territory larger than gaza, home to about 3 million palestinians. >> i continue to be alarmed about extremist settlers attacking palestinians in the west bank that pouring gasoline on fires in gaza neighborhood are in shambles and the health care system is collapsing. >> after more than two weeks of israeli airstrikes. this local reports say 12 of 35 hospitals are no longer functioning, with

more facilities running out of fuel for generators and medicine. in short supply. >> the hospital door is open, but the health care is not provided. if the fuel is zero, simply the doctors and the nurses will go home and the hospital will turn to big morgue. >> only eight trucks of humanitarian aid got into gaza yesterday before the war. more than 400 trucks arrived daily. the un says its operations in gaza could shut down in the coming hours if fuel is not delivered. the organization says its departure would end a lifeline for palestinians in the war zone. israel says hamas has stockpiles of fuel but refuses to give it to the hospitals. >> the resort city of acapulco has suffered catastrophic damage after a direct hit from hurricane otis. it struck mexico as a cat five storm with winds of 165mph. extensive looting was reported overnight. the storm exploded dramatically, catching forecasts by surprise. they say this is more evidence of the

together feels better together. >> updating our breaking news, a massive manhunt this morning after a deadly shooting rampage in lewiston, maine. at least 20 people were killed last night and dozens were injured at a bowling alley and a restaurant. police have identified a 40 year old robert card as a person of interest sources say he served in the military and was recently committed to a mental health facility. for two weeks, schools in that area will be closed today. >> by the way, there have been 565 mass shootings in the us this year. this attack in lewiston, maine, is the deadliest so far this year. we, of course, will bring you more details as they become available. >> so the other news this morning, new scrutiny of supreme court justice clarence thomas. an investigation by senate democrats claims thomas failed to repay much of the $267,000 loan he got from a friend in 1999. it was used to pay for a luxury rv. the report says thomas did not include the loan

on his financial disclosures or tax returns. no comment yet from thomas. >> now to a bizarre story from new york city. a man trapped inside a security vault for hours. it was like a scene out of ocean's 11, only not as glamorous. and it wasn't a robbery. authorities say just before 9:00 tuesday night, a man was going to his safety deposit box inside this high security vault in a jewelry store on fifth avenue in new york when an employee closed the vault door, not knowing someone was still inside. >> once the door is closed after 7:00, it locks automatically. >> that meant without help the man would be trapped in the 20 by 40 foot vault until morning. fire rescue crews tried to cut through the concrete walls more than two feet thick. it's about 30in or so of concrete. >> we started doing that. we got to the point where we got to the metal plating. the problem with the plating is we'd have to use our torches on there, which
