out of anger that it was happening. community because mainers were much better than this. >> now at six, a search for a person of interest after a mass shooting in maine, at least 16 people killed. and the urgent messages coming from authorities as they expand the search area overnight in the south bay, a pregnant woman and her baby die after a hit and run crash. >> police say the driver was in a stolen car. >> plus, local communities showing support for those impacted by the war in the middle east. the events being held across the bay area today. an odd tomorrow. good morning to you on this thursday, october 26th. first of all, why don't we get started with a check of your morning traffic jobina. good morning. >> hey, good morning, sam. we're going to start with a live look from the bay bridge toll plaza and everybody wants to see it. metering lights came on at 532. the backup is heavy here. we had an earlier crash on westbound 80 at right around the fremont street off ramp this morning. that really has just caused a

domino effect there. as far as mass transit, though, you're on time with bart, muni and caltrain. so no problems to report in that stretch. but if you do rely on bart for the weekend, i do want to let you know about these track upgrades that are going to impact you if you take the train somewhere through pleasant hill or also the concord station. so you can expect up to about 30 minute delays. hey, drew. hey, jobina. >> we begin with our temperature as it is a chilly start out there for a lot of us. for most of us, this is one of our colder mornings in recent weeks. we're in the 30s and some of our coldest areas in the north bay. santa rosa. good morning. 38 degrees. we're at 49 in oakland. a cool 45 in half moon bay. even inland san ramon waking up to 44 degrees. so i would take the heavier jacket with you this morning. it is clear out there. we have great visibility from our sutro tower camera. that crisp start leads to a bright day. we're expecting a lot of sunshine, but temperatures below average, 4:00 pm. we're only going into the 60s. reggie drew, thank you. >> lockdown and main this morning after a mass shooting there. so far, at least 16 people are believed to be dead

in the small town of lewiston. dozen more are injured. jobina is at the live desk and jobina, the accused gunman still hasn't been found. >> yes, reggie, a mass search is underway for a person of interest. they're looking for 40 year old robert cod. police say he has a history of military service. he's also a firearms instructor and was treated at a mental health facility over the summer after allegedly saying he was hearing voices. the deadly attack unfolding in lewiston, maine, in the state's second largest city with police responding to shootings in at least two locations. the first call came from a bowling alley hosting a youth night for a kids bowling league. one witness says she heard a loud bang before her father, a retired police officer, corralled her and her family into a corner. >> i kind of like laid on top of her and my mom was kind of on top of me. >> riley dumont was bowling with her 11 year old daughter when she heard several shots during the chaos. she said she saw 3 or

4 bodies on the ground. the second shooting happened at a local restaurant about four miles from the bowling alley. this morning, a shelter in place order remains in lewiston and neighboring lisbon, maine, where police say they found this white subaru believed to be owned by cod. the white house released a statement offering full federal support in the wake of this horrific attack. officials say they're now expanding that shelter in place advisory to include the town of bowdoin schools in the area will also be closed today, and they're planning a news conference later this morning gloria. >> all right. thank you so much, jobina. the bay area pilot accused of trying to shut off a plane's engines as it was heading to sfo is expected to appear in federal court in portland today. that's where the plane diverted and police arrested 44 year old joseph emerson late sunday. emerson was in court earlier this week and pleaded not guilty to the 83 attempted murder counts that is one for each person aboard that flight, emerson was hitching a

ride in the cockpit's jump seat when this all allegedly happened . the fbi affidavit says that emerson suddenly said, i'm not okay before trying to pull the t handles on the plane. and he's also accused of trying to open the exit door. emerson told police he thought he was having a nervous breakdown and that he had not slept in 43 hours. court is set for 2:00 this afternoon. >> this morning, the situation in the gaza strip is growing more dire. the un agency for palestinian refugees has issued a warning, saying it is on the verge of running out of fuel. the agency says the development is forcing it to sharply cut back relief operations across the region. the territory has been blockaded and hit by devastating israeli airstrikes since the deadly attack launched by hamas militants on israel. israel is accusing hamas of using fuel for its operations instead of providing that fuel to hospitals. meanwhile, a qatari official says

international efforts to secure the release of the more than 200 hostages taken by hamas during the siege are making progress. yesterday, president biden reiterated he has urged but not demanded that israel delay its planned ground invasion of gaza to allow additional time to win the release of israeli hostages and allow aid into gaza. >> israel has the right, and i would add responsibility to respond to the slaughter of their people. but that does not lessen the need for to operate in a line with the laws of war. >> the president is calling for a concentrated effort by the world's leaders to work toward a two state solution. he added there is no going back to the status quo as it stood before the hamas attacks that killed more than 1400 people in israel. october seventh. >> and as we know, the war is having an effect on communities right here in the bay area tonight. the jewish community will come together in san francisco. kenneth beth israel chabad is hosting a unite for

israel event to pray for the safety and security of jewish people in israel. it will include a candle lighting ceremony and vigil. anybody is welcome and the event starts at 8:00. >> jewish students at uc berkeley are planning to rally tomorrow. it comes after hundreds of people on campus rallied in support of palestinians yesterday. free, free palestine. >> free. free palestine. >> several palestinian campus organizations put together this event. a small group of jewish students was also there. we spoke with a student helping to organize tomorrow's rally. she says some of the chants made her feel unsafe on campus. >> the chance that they're using from the river to the sea, if you were to ask any of these people, what does that mean for the jewish people who live there from the river to the sea means annihilation of all of them. that means executing every single jewish person. >> we dispute this claim because what from the river to the sea and what all of 48 means is that palestinians have a right to return to their homes. this

right is enshrined in international law and the geneva convention. >> some of the participants wore masks because they didn't want to be identified. a jewish owned ice cream shop in san francisco was vandalized and tagged with pro palestine graffiti. this is video of smitten ice cream shop on valencia street. it was boarded up after the windows were shattered and according to the news website, mission local, the window that was not smashed was covered in graffiti that read, quote, free palestine mission. local reports the store's owner is jewish state senator scott wiener tweeted about the incident, calling the actions anti-semitic. >> this morning, an unfortunate update to an already tragic story. it involves a hit and run crash in the south bay that took the life of a pregnant woman. it all happened on tuesday night near the oak ridge mall. abc7 news reporter lena howland is live in san jose with what we've learned about the investigation and the people in the car that hit her and lena, we're going to

you're old and wounded. three other teens. investigators say that 18 year old jason walizada from antioch was arrested and booked into jail last night. the shooting happened this past saturday night in oakley. police say the 16 year old boy who was killed was a student at liberty high school in brentwood. the suspect's bail was set at $1.1 million. state lawmakers are asking the california highway patrol to help with the ongoing public safety crisis in antioch. more than half of all antioch police officers are currently on

leave after a massive investigation involving racist texts and violent tactics. the city has been struggling to respond to basic public safety needs with only 4 to 5 officers on duty at a time covering a city of 120,000 people. governor newsom has not yet responded to this request. >> halloween is almost here in san francisco. castro district is getting ready for a weekend full of fun. >> the celebrations have become part of the neighborhood's culture over the years. terry austin bennett is the president of the castro merchants association and she says that this year's events will be more family friendly with costume contests, but also some face painting and a spooky movie marathon. often, she says, her grandfather was the one who initially brought the holiday into the community. >> he would bring in a flatbed truck and we'd have a kids costume contest and a pie eating contest. >> and he had made this enormous

this is northbound to 84 winchester boulevard. your speeds are down to around nine miles per hour in this spot. gloria, all right. >> thank you so much, jobina. as you wake up this morning, we want to get you updated on the mass shooting in maine. so here is what we know this morning. abc news sources now say at least 16 people died in the shooting. dozens more are injured in the town of lewiston, that town and surrounding areas are under a shelter in place order right now as law enforcement continues a mass search to find a person of interest. that person is believed to be armed and dangerous. abc news spoke with a ten year old who was grazed by a bullet but managed to escape the attack with her mother. >> when i turned around, i saw the shooter right behind me. he had just come in the door. i don't know if that was just a warning shot or if he actually shot somebody with that one. shocking. >> get something that you think would never happen. i never

thought i'd grow up and get a bullet in my leg. why? like, why do people do this? and again, that person of interest is still on the loose this morning. >> reporter dan krauth from our sister station wabc in new york traveled domain overnight and is live there this morning. dan good morning. good morning, gloria. >> this city that's known as one of the safest cities in america is now home to the latest mass shooting. i'm going to step out of the way so i can show you the police presence here behind me. they're guarding one of two crime scenes in the city of lewiston. they're not letting anyone near and they're going to remain here for quite some time. people are waking up here today feeling sad, anxious and devastated. so many victims and the man responsible is still on the run. take a look. police respond to two shootings in at least two locations overnight at a senior federal law enforcement official telling abc news, between 16 and 22 people may have been killed, dozens more

injured. here officials searching for a man identified as 40 year old robert cod. authorities say he has a history of military service, is a firearms instructor and was recently treated at a mental health facility. the first call came in last night from a bowling alley. and get this, they were hosting a youth night for a kids bowling league at the time. one witness telling us she heard a loud bang before her father corralled her and her family into a corner to survive. another witness described a harrowing scene with shots ringing out just after he walked in the front door. many people here caught in the crossfire. >> yeah, i've heard people that down there by the door is that have family members in there. there was a girl down there with five people all got shot up. i have to tell you, this city is eerily quiet this morning. >> people are abiding by the shelter in place order as they search for this missing gunman. people are staying home and a lot of businesses here are shut down. police have been very quiet overnight, not releasing

morning, congress will be getting back to work. new house speaker mike johnson says he's planning an aggressive schedule in the weeks and months ahead. and we're learning more about johnson this morning. he's from louisiana and led the state's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. he has supported anti lgbtq plus laws and opposes a woman's right to choose. johnson has served only six and a half years in congress, and he has the least experience of any speaker in 140 years as the country demands strong leadership of this body. >> and we must not waver. we want our allies around the world to know that this body of lawmakers is reporting again to our duty stations let the enemies of freedom around the world hear us loud and clear. the people's house is back in business. >> the first vote under speaker johnson was a resolution supporting israel. the house must also take up funding for ukraine. that's something that

johnson has questioned in the past. another crucial task is a looming government shutdown, with government funding set to expire on november 17th. former president donald trump has been fined $10,000 for violating a limited gag order. >> it's part of trump's fraud trial. the judge referenced a statement the former president made in the hallway outside the courtroom in new york city. >> this judge is very partizan judge with a person who's very partizan, sitting alongside of him. >> so the question now is, who is he referring to when he said the person who sits alongside him? was that the law clerk? trump has targeted that clerk before and had been warned not to do it again. on the stand and under oath, trump insisted that he wasn't referring to the clerk, but instead to the state star witness. his former fixer, michael cohen. cohen testified trump directed him to inflate trump's net worth to, quote, whatever number mr. trump told us to. >> you look him in the eye, michael. what did you see? i saw a defeated man.

16 people in lewiston, maine. dozens of people are injured right now. police are asking residents to shelter in place as schools in the area are closed. they are looking for 40 year old robert card, who they say is armed and dangerous. the suspect opened fire at a restaurant and a bowling alley on wednesday night. we expect an update on the investigation around 730. we will have that for you live right here on abc seven. and wherever you stream and the nearly six week long strike against detroit automakers could soon be coming to an end. yesterday, the united auto workers union reached a tentative deal with ford. abc news sources say ford has agreed to a 25% wage increase with an 11% raise in the first year of the new contract. the union president says the deal will now be submitted to the a. excuse me, the uaw council overseeing relations with ford. once the

council approves workers will vote on it. ford's deal could set the pattern for agreements with general motors and stellantis, both of which are still negotiating with the union . hundreds of striking hotel workers in la are about to hit the four month mark. they are demanding that the hotels return to the bargaining table to work out a new deal. they want a retirement plan. they want health insurance. also higher wages. another big issue is the use of immigrants who recently arrived by bus. the da's office is looking into allegations that the hotels have been employing them. >> a lot of these hotel workers, they themselves hail from different parts of the world. and so it is ridiculous and disgusting that the hotels will try to use vulnerable unhoused immigrants to try to put these workers against each other. but what we're telling them, that's not going to work. >> right. we're taking them under our wing and we're going to fight for them as well. >> hotel officials have said the hotels remain open with

many injuries or deaths will be blamed on this storm. hurricane otis is the strongest hurricane on record to hit mexico's pacific coastline. just tragic to see the impact that this has had already. yeah, we talked about it a lot yesterday morning and part of the problem, the national hurricane center called it a nightmare scenario because leading up to it, about 24 hours out, they thought just a tropical storm was going to make landfall. >> but then it quickly became a major category five storm. so people didn't really have time to prepare for that huge difference. and that's what we're seeing this morning. unfortunately, back here at home, though, it's all about cool temperatures this morning and a bright afternoon on the way. here's a live look at our rooftop camera at kgo, starting to see those beautiful sunrise colors, your sunrise is right before 730 this morning. so in about 40 minutes, that sun will cross the horizon. it is quiet out there this morning. we have chilly temperatures starting out in the 30 soquel's and 40s for a lot of us. but it's a bright day. it's mostly sunny, but the afternoon and the next several afternoons, we will keep those temperatures below average for

this time of the year. colder mornings is also a trend in the next couple of morning, especially saturday morning. we'll watch for the possibility, maybe frost advisories pop up. we'll talk about that in one second. for the past couple of mornings, fog has been an issue. no visibility problems this morning in the wake of that cold front. it's mixed out our atmosphere and we have clear skies across the board. but those clear skies and that cooler air in the wake of that cold front means many cities are starting out in the 30s in the north bay. we're at 36 in ukiah, the same in clear lake, 39 in novato this morning, 43 in vallejo, even around the bay shoreline. look at palo alto waking up to 45 at 43in san ramon. so you may want that heavier jacket as you step out the door this morning and you'll likely keep it on for a huge portion of the morning because it is a bright day. but temperatures are limited because of that cold front will only go into the 60s, which is below average for this time of the year. overnight tonight, we'll keep that trend of some cold mornings, 30s and 40s for most of us under a blend of stars and clouds. here's the accuweather 70 forecast. we'll keep

right. >> thank you so much, jobina duncan has reached a settlement with an atlanta woman after she claimed she had severe life changing burns because of one of its coffee cups. the 70 year old's attorney says that at a drive thru, a worker handed her the cup with an unsecured lid, causing the coffee to spill onto her lap. she had second and third degree burns and spent weeks in the hospital while getting skin grafts. duncan settled with the woman for $3 million. >> now for an update to a story we first brought you yesterday, a stolen u-haul truck filled with thousands of dollars worth of performing gear has been found, but the owner says he's lost dozens of items used in his show. the truck was located in richmond yesterday with some of the damaged items still inside the vehicle. this is a puppet show. and hamid rahmani told abc seven news that the thieves stole the u-haul early monday morning from outside his hotel in san francisco in the marina. he says at least two boxes of the puppets are still missing.

so are all of his costumes. and more than $100,000 worth of equipment. he is in the bay area from new york for a series of performances in the san francisco giants. >> have a new manager. the team introduced bay area native bob melvin as their new skipper. he managed the a's for ten years before going to the padres. he admitted that he would often look at oracle park and wonder if he would get the chance to manage the giants. >> i was lucky enough to grow up in an area where you got to experience sports like nowhere else. that's really kind of the thing that resonates with me and be able to do it with with several teams in the bay area now and going to cal and my second tour here with the giants and with the a's, it means so much to me. and this is going to be my last stop. so to be able to know that this is where my career is going to end as far as managing goes, it's pretty surreal moment. >> melvin was born in palo alto, went to cal and was a backup catcher with the giants in the mid 80s.
