shooting scenes are in lewiston. >> abc seven news anchor karina nova has been following the very latest, joins us live from the newsroom karina. yeah, a lot of developments happening right now. >> the fbi is at the suspect's home in bowdoin with a spotlight. drones and a helicopter overhead. we can take a live look at what's going on, even though it's dark. what we know is that law enforcement has been surrounding the suspect's home for more than an hour during this time, we heard the fbi say over a loudspeaker, come out with your hands up. but as of now, law enforcement has not confirmed whether robert card is in the house or if he's in custody. in the meantime, here is the latest update on the victims and today we are learning some of their names. seven people were killed at a bowling alley in lewiston, maine . eight people were killed in the billiards room at a local restaurant. four miles away, three people died at the hospital and at least 13 others are injured. and here's the latest on that suspect, robert card. abc news has learned the 40 year old has a history of

military service and has experience as a firearms instructor. just this summer, he was treated for two weeks at a mental health facility after allegedly hearing voices and threatening to shoot up a national guard facility in maine. card legally owns multiple weapons. he has no criminal record. we have been hearing from families of victims and people who were in the crossfire. that includes a little girl whose leg was grazed by a bullet. zoe, who's just ten years old, says she was worried whether she would live or die. we also heard from the father of the bowling alley manager picked up a butcher knife and went after the gunman to try to stop him from killing other people. >> and that's when he shot my son to death, trying to save some more lives. that he ended up losing his life. >> it's shocking. get something that you think would never happen. i never thought i'd grow up and get a bullet in my leg.

why like why do people do this? >> this afternoon, maine officials held a press conference with political leaders. republican senator susan collins was questioned about the yellow flag law, which she says should have been triggered based on the shooter's mental health background. democratic congressman jared golden called on congress to ban assault rifles like the one used in this shooting. and we did just confirm this new development. law enforcement sources now describe the note found at the suspect's home as a suicide note addressed to roberts card son. again the hunt for card is happening as we speak. and as i mentioned, the fbi is at the suspect's home right now. back to you. >> all right. we continue to follow this. thank you, karina. and please remember these events of gun violence. they do weigh on all of us. and we have a list of vetted resources to try to help you to get started, just visit abc seven news.com/take action there is more heartache

tonight in the south bay following a deadly crash that claimed the life of a pregnant woman. >> the baby delivered by emergency surgery has also died. the crash happened near oak ridge mall in san jose at the intersection of blossom hill road and winfield boulevard. a memorial has gone up there to pay tribute to 21 year old april zalgaller, pregnant with a son to be named devonte and they had to pull him from life support last night. >> and he passed around 915. but he's with his mother now in her arms. in heaven's police say zalgaller was driving eastbound on blossom hill road when a stolen car crashed into her. >> two men left the scene immediately after the collision. they have not yet been caught. >> a lot of tragic news tonight. a man in his 40 ends was pinned between two parked cars and crushed to death when the vehicles were hit by a speeding stolen kia suv last night. crash happened on international

boulevard near high street. now, police say the kia initially hit a pontiac. then it lost control at high speed and slammed into the parked cars. the victim was just walking on the sidewalk when he was pinned. he died at the scene. police say the driver ran away after the crash and officers are still searching for that person in closing, a loophole in a state law today, senator scott wiener introduced a plan to make it easier to prosecute car break ins. >> we have had enough. >> we want to see change and we need laws that don't make it easy for criminals to get away with these kinds of crimes. >> i believe that the impact of this legislation session will be transformative. >> the epidemic of car break ins is not limited to just one bay area city, of course, but even if the criminals are caught, there's one part of the current state law that makes it challenging to prosecute them. abc7 news reporter suzanne fawn is in the newsroom to explain how lawmakers are planning and hoping anyway, suzanne, to change that. >> well, dan, state senator scott wiener says he wants to hold auto burglars accountable

by changing a serious loophole in a current law. >> it's an absurd requirement, isn't it? makes no sense. >> state senator scott wiener says there's an auto burglary law on the books that needs a big change. >> we are going to get rid of that useless requirement. >> that requirement is to prove someone is guilty of breaking into a car. california's current auto burglary statute requires proof the vehicle was locked. >> even if you have a video of the person smashing the window, even if there's clear evidence the person broke into the car, the da also has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the car was locked out. >> wiener says his legislation, which he's introducing for the third time, will remove that requirement. san francisco's da says criminals are more brazen, more organized. they're going through windows and seconds to take stuff. but because of that current requirement, victims are required to physically come back to san francisco to testify that their doors were locked that

prevent prosecution of these crimes from being successful. supporters say this proposed legislation would benefit communities across the bay that are being hit hard by car break ins. in oakland, police are ramping up patrols, bringing back foot patrols in the downtown area. and this weekend, opd is launching a pilot program. people can report an auto burglary on instagram and x in san francisco. sfpd is adding more officers in neighborhoods where break ins are happening. even using bait cars to catch thieves. >> we pulled up here and we saw the glass everywhere here at this parking lot of the palace of fine arts, there are several parking stalls filled with broken glass. >> brianna yanez, who's visiting from houston, didn't want to take any chances. we were counting on getting our car broken into, so we put everything in the trunk. >> the president of the american car rental association believes senator wiener's proposed legislation will make a big difference. >> the lack of consequence is for getting caught doing it, and that's what we're here today to

address this is exactly what's needed. >> senator wiener's into produced similar legislation back in 2018 and 19, but believes the bills did not move forward because of the leadership at the time. now, senator wiener hopes the third time will be a charm. back to you. >> yeah, suzanne, it seems like an obvious loophole to close. any idea how many car break in cases have actually not been prosecuted? because the victims could not return to testify in court that their doors were locked? well the da says that's very difficult to quantify. >> but remember, lots of the places where auto burglaries occur are frequented by tourists who don't live in the state or even the country. so they are very unlikely to come back to testify in these cases. back to you. >> question okay, suzanne, thank you. >> a suspect is now in custody in connection to the death of a 16 year old at a house party in oakley last night. police arrested an 18 year old from antioch. he's accused of shooting and killing that 16 year old who went to liberty high school in brentwood. three others were also hurt. the suspects bail was set at $1.1 million.

>> a homicide investigation is underway after a man in fremont was shot and killed. paramedics responded but were not able to save him. police got the report around 5 p.m. yesterday to walnut avenue near central park. they found one shell casing and have yet to identify a suspect. it's fremont's fourth homicide of the year. the police department accepts anonymous tips by text or online. if you think you may know anything about what happened that could help, moving to the north bay. >> a pilot and passenger walked away unharmed after a single engine plane made an emergency landing near north field and nevada this afternoon. sky seven shows you the scene there. the kit plane was painted to resemble a navy fighter jet, but it was registered to a nevada company. there was damage to the plane's landing gear. no word yet on what caused that plane to come down. >> well, certainly a chilly start to the day, but there is a change on the way. here's a live look outside at the condition just sparkling outside. let's go to abc7 news meteorologist sandy patel with details on fire. weather watch issued for this

weekend. sandy yeah, dan the concern is gusty winds developing and the humidity dropping this weekend. >> that fire weather watch covers our hills, also covers lake solano and mendocino counties. it's 5 a.m. saturday until 5 p.m. sunday. those wind gusts 40 to 50 miles an hour, minimum humidity down to 15 to 25. so any fires that do break out are going to rapidly grow in size and intensity. here's an hour by hour. look at those winds coming up saturday afternoon in the 25 to 35 mile an hour range, even stronger over the hilltops, as you will notice, by 8 p.m, you're looking at 43 miles an hour in fairfield. those gusty winds remaining with us on sunday morning. so the fire danger index takes into account the wind and the fuels. and obviously the humidity levels. we are going into that high to very high category by saturday afternoon. and there will be some areas of red in the northern part of our viewing area, which is extreme fire danger for saturday night going

developments in maine. and we are streaming their coverage on the abc seven news live stream right now so you can watch it there now as this investigation unfolds. >> all right. coming back here at home, a santa clara county murder case gone cold more than 40 years has finally been solved. a county investigators and sunnyvale police credit the break in the case to new technology. abc seven news reporter ryan curry is in the south bay with more on the victim and how authorities identified her killer for more than 40 years, no one knew who killed estela mina. >> it's been a mystery since 1979, but now, because of dna and genealogy, police say they finally know her killer. >> we don't forget the victims and we don't forget the families and friends of those victims who still want justice. >> all this time, samuel silva was the murderer. mina died here on the 400 block of guinea avenue in sunnyvale. she was stabbed multiple times while silva was trying to sexually assault her after her death. there were no leads pointing to

silva, no matter how many years it's been. >> ten, 20, 50 years, we want to get justice for those people. >> authorities believe the two met while working at great america. silva died in prison in 2008 while serving a federal gun charge. they say he had a lengthy criminal history, including attempted murder, rape and manslaughter. it wasn't until this year when the county and sunnyvale police tested new evidence matching silva to mina's death. >> the advent of forensic genealogy allows us to be proactive, to try to find out the name and the person behind that profile without having to wait around. >> now, santa clara county is going a step further. they launched a new hotline where people can submit anonymous tips, cold case experts think this will help solve more murders. >> it could be the most seemingly insignificant piece of information that allows those investigators to connect the dots and finally get the answers that might solve the case. >> since 2018, deputy da baker

and santa clara county have solved 16 cold case murders, advancements in dna testing and genealogy will help them solve more, especially for jane and john. does every day an unknown murder victim is given a face and a name through the use of genealogy, a necessary step in giving victims families closure. >> they shouldn't give up. it's more validation for them to continue fighting for answers in the south bay. >> ryan curry, abc seven news. coming up, state health officials are urging californians to get vaccinated before viruses surge this winter. >> what they're saying about the vaccination rates for covid, the flu and rsv i'm just the flu. doctors expect infections to pick back up in time for the winter. he's urging everyone to get vaccinations to reduce the severity of illness or death. california's covid vaccination rate is just 4.6. now, the vaccination rate for those 65 and up is especially concerning. >> so right now, it's almost 14. that's not good enough. we want to see we should really be seeing much higher, much higher rates, especially amongst amongst the old. >> meanwhile, there is a nationwide shortage of the rsv vaccine for infants. pediatricians are reporting unprecedented demand from parents. the season's for snow has come to the sierra. >> the uc berkeley snow lab there measured nearly four inches over the last 24 hours. that's a bit higher than the forecast expected. this video from yesterday shows the small storm rolling through the start to the chilly season. also giving a gorgeous look at at falling flakes. nothing quite like the first snow of the season. oh, it's so nice. kind of magical, isn't it? yeah

especially from our vantage point where it's not snowing. >> that's true. >> all right. so let's check on the weather. >> meteorologist sandhya patel is here. >> sandhya yeah, it is definitely magical, but our weather here certainly starting to feel like the seasons are changing. dan and yes, it is fall, but we've got that winter like chill. as we take a look at these live pictures, you will notice how pretty it is with those high thin, wispy clouds. there's certainly some snow from zephyr cove on the hilltops there in the mountains. so that is a welcome sight. here's live doppler seven. and here is where those high clouds are coming from. there's a system off the coast. it is not going to bring us rain, but it will certainly increase the cloud cover and behind that system, high pressure builds in and that's what's going to bring the fire danger over the weekend as a pressure gradient tightens 50s and 60s on your temperatures. right now, chilled sunshine out there. here's a live view from our pier 39 camera. look how pretty it is right now. increasing high clouds overnight . it cold the next few mornings with below average high

temperatures continuing and elevated fire danger this upcoming weekend. so here's the hourly forecast animation showing you those high clouds coming in that will help to insulate us a little bit, but it's still going to get chilly by morning. it's not going to help completely. so we will take a look at your morning. temperatures, 36 degrees in santa rosa. could see some patchy frost in some of the wind sheltered valleys. 35 in lakeport, 42 livermore, 48, san jose, 47. in oakland, 50 degrees in san francisco. tomorrow afternoon. upper 50s to upper 60s. it is going to be breezy but a mainly sunny friday. now in terms of those temperatures saturday morning, close to freezing there in santa rosa. this is when frost is likely going to form as we head towards sunday. not quite as cold. and then monday, those temperatures do come up in the overnight hours. a look at the walk to end alzheimer's in san ramon for saturday. it is going to be on the chilly side to start the

morning sunshine, 43 degrees. the walk begins 48 degrees. so make sure you have those extra layers, 55. and really the sunny, comfortable weather for the noontime hour. dan ashley will be there to serve as emcee. a look at the accuweather seven day forecast it and you will notice those temperatures even though they're going down in the overnight hours for friday saturday they'll be going up in the afternoons for the weekend and so will that fire danger with gusty winds. so stay aware as we head towards early next week, we'll bring in that all important halloween forecast. and right now, it's looking dry. so ama and dan, the little ones should have no problems. >> fantastic. dan, we'll be there at the alzheimer's walk with a sweater. >> yeah, i was going to say, you'll need that sweater. >> thank you very much. all right. >> in mexico, at least 27 people are dead and several more are missing. >> a day after that deadly category five hurricane made landfall in acapulco. it was the strongest hurricane on record to hit mexico's pacific coast. reporter patrick oppmann has the

latest. acapulco is a tourist beach town now the scene of heartbreaking destruction after the category five hurricane. >> otis barreled into southern mexico with sustained winds of 165mph, building after building ripped apart video taken from a drone showing widespread flooding, some residents say they had no choice but to evacuate on foot. power is disrupted for more than 300,000 people as of thursday. in food increasingly scarce as acapulco is looking at it now. >> uh- acapulco is a total disaster for it's not what it was before the park was totally destroyed. the buildings, all the streets. no, i would describe acapulco now as a total disaster, as rescue workers reached the hardest hit areas, they reported grim news about the loss of life lamentablemente. >> unfortunately, we received

word from the state and city governments that 27 people are dead and four are missing. >> officials said they tried to alert the populace about the rapidly intensifying storm, but there was not enough time for many to seek shelter or flee or stock up on supplies. in less than 24 hours. otis exploded from a tropical storm to a category five hurricane, which can inflict catastrophic wind damage and life threatening storm surge. forecasters admit otis's sudden strengthening as it traveled over uncommonly warm waters caught them off guard. hiyoshi ocean temperatures helped fuel hurricanes in 2023. broke records for surface ocean heat, which scientists say is one of the effects of human caused climate change. mexico's president is visiting the region where the storm hit and said his country had never experienced a hurricane like otis. >> president has no precedent in
