expanding. tens of thousands of people in two maine counties are sheltering in place. businesses and schools are closed as far as an hour away from the crime scenes. police responded last night to cards home in a nearby town to execute search warrants. >> now the police presence and the commands they issued raised speculation that card was at that location, but that was apparently not the case. >> let's get right to abc's ike ejiochi with the latest. he is in lewiston this morning. ike good morning. >> good morning, andrew. good morning, renee. and we're in day two of this massive search. we're learning more and more about the victims from this tragedy, all while law enforcement learns more about the suspect based on the evidence he left behind. overnight, investigators appeared no closer to catching robert card, the army reservist wanted for the deadly mass shootings in maine. heavily armed police surrounded a home associated with card last night. loud bangs were heard as police shouted for card to surrender a

number of tactical vehicles and troops come in. >> drones, helicopters and our reporters there heard a call calling out commands to say come out, calling the suspect by his name. and the suspicion was, is that they may have had him surround sounded. >> but nearly two hours later, most of the swat teams left the property. if he's hiding in the woods, if he's hiding in an environment that he's familiar with, he has all the advantage of the world. >> in the world he has the ability to scoped it out initially to have set aside hiding spots to have positioned himself in a in a way that he can see anybody that's coming. police say card opened fire at a bowling alley and nearby restaurant in the small city of lewiston wednesday night, killing 18 people and injuring 13. >> an abc news has learned card's sister told investigators she thought her brother may have been going after an ex-girl friend at the bowling alley to counties remained under shelter

subway. >> tony managed to make it out, but her mom was forced to hide any minute. >> i was waiting to see his face come around that corner, and that was the most daunting part because i'm laying there on my back face, you know, on my back, laying flat and there's a table in front of me. but i've got nowhere to go. >> it comes as we learn more about the 18 people killed in the shooting spree. bob violet was one of 11 victims at the bowling alley. he was a coach for the youth bowling league. tricia aslan, a regular at the alley, was also killed, and joseph walker, a manager at jimmy's bar and grill, was shot while trying to stop the suspect at the second shooting scene. my son had grabbed some type of a butcher knife or something and went towards the killer to try to stop him from killing anyone else. >> and that's when he shot my son. >> walker was one of seven people killed at the bar. many of those victims were part of a gathering for the death. >> i don't know how some people

restrictive, and it has been used, but i think it could be more widely applied if we had a red flag law. margaret groban from the university of maine law school says maine's gun laws are lax compared to other northeastern states, which have red flag laws. >> they simplify the process, allowing relatives of a gun owner to directly ask a court to remove a gun during a mental health crisis. still, that may not have been enough. >> even if robert card had been prohibited from buying a gun. we do not have universal background checks in maine, and he could have gone to a local coroner to a private dealer, and he would have been able to buy a gun illegally that way, despite maine's soft gun laws, the state has fewer mass shootings per capita than those with stricter laws. >> maine had three mass shootings since 2018, none far below connecticut. new jersey and new york. others say it's the type of gun that's the issue in this case. the suspect using an assault style weapon. maine congressman jared golden, who previously opposed an assault
