others say they're making things worse. >> good morning. you made it to friday, october 27th. >> we are here friday, uh. well, why don't we get it started with a check of your forecast? drew, how's the weekend looking? >> yeah, the weekend looks pretty windy this morning. we're tracking some cold temperatures. it's the coldest start in the city since last may. so about 5 or 6 months since we've seen temperatures this low outside this morning. it's a live look from sutro tower with clear skies, but it is chilly out there across the board. we're down to 36 in santa rosa, the same in nevada. we're down to 41 and half moon bay right now. the city is at 49 degrees. the last time we were in the 40s was back in may. it's 48in san jose, 39 right now in san ramon. take that winter jacket with you. maybe even the scarf, because we do warm slowly as the morning goes on. it's a sunny day today, but temperature is just like yesterday. are pretty much limited into the 60s by about 4:00 pm. but it's a bright day today. it's chilly this morning, but we will warm into 63 for the city. 64 for oakland, 68 in san jose up to 65 in napa. we do have a fire weather watch that

will go into effect over the weekend. gloria, we'll get into the details of that coming up in just a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thank you so much. and we'll start this morning with the urgent effort to find the man suspected in the deadly mass shooting in maine. as we speak, hundreds of law enforcement officers are involved in the search for robert cod. maine's governor now says 18 people are dead and some of those victims are being identif fillled. they include a youth bowling coach and members of a deaf cornhole club. a law enforcement source tells abc news that the suspect had affiliations at both the local bowling alley and the bar that he allegedly targeted. the source says he may have been looking for an ex-girlfriend. at one, the suspect also now appears to have been fairly thoughtful about eluding police. police recovered a cell phone that he left behind, apparently thinking that it could be tracked and jobina as the search intensifies throughout, sounds of people are essentially locked down, right? >> yes. gloria schools and businesses will be closed again

today and a shelter in place. order now spans across two counties. last night, law enforcement surrounded robert cod's home and bowed in maine, which is about 25 minutes away from where the shootings happened. but after about two hours, most law enforcement left a note, which is being called a suicide note, was found inside and addressed to his son, cod's neighbor says he recently bought a high tech scope for one of his guns. >> it was a $2,000 thermal scope he had just gotten. and it's you know, that's infrared. you can see in the dark with it. it picks up heat signatures, sources confirm with abc news cod's ex-girlfriend is connected to one of the shooting locations . >> the 40 year old suspect has a history of military service as a reservist and has experience as a firearms instructor. he spent two weeks in a mental health facility in the summer after he was allegedly hearing voices. and there are questions now as to why he wasn't flagged under

maine's yellow flag law, which is meant to keep guns from people who could be a danger to themselves or to others. reggie jobina, thank you. >> yeah. and we're now hearing stories from family and friends of the victims, including from the father of joseph walker. he was the manager on duty at a local bar and grill, and his father says he was shot while trying to stop the suspect out. >> my son had grabbed some type of a butcher knife or something and went towards the killer to try to stop him from killing anyone else. and that's when he shot my son, walker was one of seven people killed at the bar. >> many of those victims were part of a gathering for the deaf as more information emerges about this story, stay with abc seven news. if you download our abc seven bay area app, you can get push alerts like this when there are live updates or breaking news. >> we're hearing from the wife of the bay area pilot accused of trying to shut down the engines of a plane that was heading to sfo. she tells the associated

press she knew her husband was struggling with depression, but doesn't think that he would have knowingly tried to crash the plane. joseph emerson pleaded not guilty to federal charges of interference with flight crew members and attendants. bay area legal experts say that charge could have a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. emerson is also facing state charges in oregon, including 83 counts of attempted murder. his defense attorney spoke outside of court yesterday and he would like to re reiterate that he had no intention to harm himself or anybody on the airplane when he acted, according to an fbi affidavit. emerson said he was suffering from a nervous breakdown on the plane. he told authorities he had taken psychedelic mushrooms about two days prior. >> developing news, the pentagon says a us military carried out airstrikes in syria overnight at two facilities linked to iranian backed militias. defense secretary lloyd austin says the strikes were in response to a series of attacks on us military

personnel in iraq and syria. they were not linked to the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. us officials say they are making progress in helping americans escape the gaza strip. a state department spokesman says they're working closely with the governments of israel and egypt and with the un to open the rafah border for us citizens. and back here in the bay area, a brother and sister baking team are selling out of their treats for children affected by the war. to date, they have raised thousands of dollars. abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez introduces us to this sweet business. >> some of the bay area's best young bakers are selling their sweet treats for a good cause. on thursday at the los altos farmers market, nigel chaudhry and his sister panel donated 100% of their proceeds to the palestine children's relief fund. nigel said young adults can also help innocent victims from the israel hamas war.

in california to make it easier to prosecute suspects in car break ins. >> state senator scott wiener is now looking at revising legislation to tie up a legal loophole and help leaders crack down on crime. abc7 news reporter lena howland joins us live right now to explain that loophole that some say has been protecting criminals. good morning, lena. >> good morning, gloria. current state law says that in order to prove that someone is guilty of breaking into a car, you must be able to prove that vehicle was locked in the first place. that's the loophole that senator scott wiener is hoping to get rid of. san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins, says criminals are more brazen and more organized. they're going through windows and seconds to take stuff, often preying on vulnerable tourists. but because of that current requirement, victims are required to physically come back to san francisco to testify that their doors were locked. jenkins says that prevents the prosecution of

these sorts of crimes from being successful. >> my prosecutors could go into court today, even having an eyewitness to an auto burglary, even having video evidence of somebody committing an auto burglary, but without having an individual who owns the car or possesses the car, say that they lock the doors would be required to dismiss a case or see that case be dismissed by a judge. >> it's an absurd requirement that senator wiener introduce similar legislation back in 2018 and 2019, but believes the bills did not move forward because of the leadership at the time. >> senator wieder hopes that the third time will be the charm. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. thanks lena. >> time now, 510. it's all about those temperatures this morning. we are down to 48 in the city, which is the coldest start since may. we have 30s in the north

bay. the east bay. you want that winter jacket this morning because it is certainly brisk out there and we're on our way to a bright day. but again, temperatures below average this afternoon. here's a live look from san jose. we have clear skies out there. it's one of those days, again, just like yesterday where it's a nice looking day. we have a lot of sunshine on tap, but it's below average. temperatures are very slow to warm. it's still pretty brisk by noon. we're mainly stuck in the 50s. and then later on this afternoon away from the coast, we're in the mid 60s for daytime highs. your sunrise here coming at 729, 60 for high in oakland today, only 68in san jose, 63 in the city, 68 in santa rosa hit about 67. in antioch. now the three day forecast we are watching the weekend very closely because the winds are going to ramp up and that is going to create high fire danger both saturday and sunday. it's for that fact. a fire weather watch will go into effect early tomorrow morning. it's for the north bay mountains. the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains because this will be the strongest offshore wind event we have seen this season. winds

year there were 645. they count any shooting with four or more people that were shot. there were 688 mass shootings in 2021. that's one of the highest counts since the data started being tracked. killings in maine are rare, with the state reporting a total of 29 last year. >> lewiston is a fairly small city and to think that this is in our own backyard is just it's just very hard to comprehend. >> maine has had just three, i.e. mass shootings since 2018. what happened at lewiston has at least one lawmaker vowing for change. maine i would point out, has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country and has a long heritage of responsible gun ownership. >> the time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why i now call on the united states congress to ban assault rifles like the one

requirement which says you have to prove that the vehicle was locked in order to prosecute an auto burglary. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins said that there have been 15,000 auto burglaries citywide in 2023 alone and that criminals are more brazen and more organized. they're going through windows in seconds to take stuff often preying on vulnerable tourists. but because of that current requirement, victims are required to physically come back to san francisco to testify that their doors were locked. senator scott wiener says if this requirement gets removed, this means evidence of forcible entry would finally be enough to prove an auto burglary. >> we, because of this requirement, there are clear cases where someone has broken into a car and committed the crime, but either it was a tourist or with a rental car and that tourist is now 3000 miles away and they're not going to come back to san francisco to testify that they locked the car

future weather, sunny skies once again to finish out the week. temperatures struggling to even hit average again, just like yesterday. we're going to stay in the 60s for daytime highs. looking at the three day forecast, it's chilly this morning with sunshine in the afternoon. soon tomorrow mornings, even colder. frost advisories are in effect for the north bay. but the weekend we have enhanced fire danger because offshore winds are going to develop. in fact, this is the strongest offshore wind event we have seen this season. thus far, it's been pretty quiet when it comes to our fire season. but a fire weather watch has been posted for the mountains of the north bay, the east bay hills and the santa cruz mountains. this will begin tomorrow morning , lasting through sunday evening where we will find winds out of the north northeast, gusting as high as 50mph, dragging in some very dry air, some bone dry humidity levels. and under these conditions, we know we are very cognizant under these offshore wind events that any fires that start could grow in size and intensity. we are going to go hour by hour on future weather.

kicks in. we're well into the 30s in the north bay, but even around the bay shoreline, it is a cool overnight period with temperatures in the 40s. let's talk about the winds and the fire danger that increases over the weekend. a wind advisory kicks in here tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. north bay mountains, east bay hills, santa cruz mountains, areas highlighted in yellow have the strongest wind gust potential up to 50mph. that could cause power outages, could blow around unsecured objects. but it's also going to bring in some very dry air. future tracker wins. we start saturday. light winds, winds ramp up in the afternoon. that offshore component really kicks in by 4 p.m. we're really highlighting the overnight hours into sunday. this six hour window between 10 p.m. saturday to 4 a.m. sunday is when we'll find those winds really strong. you can see some areas gusting over 40mph, watching these winds very closely for you over the weekend. we'll be on top of it. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. chilly start today that high fire danger saturday and sunday with that fire weather watch in effect the winds relaxed sunday evening

five hurricane to make landfall in the eastern pacific. the full scope of damage and injuries is still unclear. people are desperate for basic supplies. as the president of mexico says, more than 1000 workers are rebuilding the grid. so water service can be restored to the area. at last check, 300,000 homes and businesses were still without power before and after satellite images show the incredible amount of damage caused in acapulco by hurricane otis in just a single day. the mexican government says it has deployed around 10,000 troops to help out, but equipment to move tons of mud and fallen trees from the streets has been slow in arriving, just devastating. >> yeah, those are incredible images back here at home. 556 this morning, we're looking at dew points, measures, how much moisture is in the atmosphere when they start to get below about 35 degrees. we're seeing that in several cities this morning. that's when your skin gets very dry, starts to crack or getting into that season
