camera. we have clear skies overhead and it is brisk this morning with those temperatures in the 30s and 40s. it's a nice looking day once again. we have a lot of sunshine just like yesterday. we'll have those baby blue skies, but temperatures really limited below average by about 4:00 pm. we're only going into the 50s and mid 60s for daytime highs. a fire weather watch is in effect this weekend. we'll talk about offshore winds developing coming up in about eight minutes. gloria >> all right. thank you so much, drew. we'll start this morning with the urgent effort to find the man suspected in the deadly mass shooting in maine. as we speak, hundreds of law enforcement officers are involved in the search for robert cod. maine's governor now says 18 people are dead. some of those victims are being identified now. they include a youth bowling coach and members of a deaf cornhole club. a law enforcement source tells abc news that the suspect had affiliations at both the local bowling alley and the bar that he allegedly targeted. the source says he may have been looking for an ex-girlfriend at

one. the suspect also now appears to have been fairly thoughtful about eluding police. police recovered a cell phone that he left behind, apparently thinking it could be tracked and jobina. as the search intensifies, thousands of people are essentially locked down, right? >> yes, gloria, schools and businesses will be closed again today in a shelter in place. order now spans across two counties. last night, law enforcement surrounded robert cod's home and bowed in maine, which is about 25 minutes away from where the shootings happened. but after about two hours, most law enforcement left a note which is being called a suicide note, was found inside and addressed to his son, cod. a neighbor says he recently bought a high tech scope for one of his guns. >> it was a $2,000 thermal scope. he had just gotten. and it's infrared. you can see in the dark with it. it picks up heat signatures. >> sources confirm with abc news that cod's ex-girlfriend friend is connected to one of the

shooting locations as the 40 year old suspect has a history of military service as a reservist and has experience as a firearms instructor. he spent two weeks in a mental health facility in the summer after he was allegedly hearing voices. and there are questions as to why he wasn't flagged under maine's yellow flag law, which is meant to keep guns from people who could be a danger to themselves or others. gloria uh- jobina, thank you. >> and right now, we are hearing stories from friends and family members of the victims, including from the father of joseph walker. he was the manager on duty at a local bar and grill. his father says that he was shot while trying to stop that suspect. >> my son had grabbed some type of a butcher knife or something and went towards the killer to try to stop him from killing anyone else. and that's when he shot my son, walker was one of seven people killed at the bar. >> many of those victims were part of a gathering for the

deaf. as more information emerges, emerges about this story, stay with abc seven news. if you download our abc seven bay area app, you can get push alerts like this when there are live updates or breaking news. >> we're hearing from the wife of the bay area pilot accused of trying to shut down the engines on an alaska flight that was heading to sfo. she tells the associated press that she knew her husband was struggling with depression in but doesn't think he would have knowingly tried to crash the plane. joseph emerson pleaded not guilty to federal charges of interference with flight crew members and attendants. bay area legal experts say that charge could have a penalty of up to 20 years in prison. eon is also facing state charges in oregon, including 83 counts of attempted murder. his defense attorney spoke outside court yesterday. >> he would like to read iterate that he had no intention to harm himself or anybody on the airplane when he acted, according to an fbi affidavit, emerson said he was suffering from a nervous breakdown on the plane.

>> he told authorities he took psychedelic mushrooms nearly two days prior. >> developing news. the pentagon says the us military carried out airstrikes in syria overnight at two facilities linked to iranian backed militias. defense secretary lloyd austin says the strikes were in response to a series of attacks on us military personnel in iraq and syria. they were not linked to the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. us officials say they are making progress in helping americans escape the gaza strip. a state department spokesperson says they are working closely with the governments of israel and egypt and with the un to open the rafah border for us citizens here in the bay area. >> a brother and sister baking team are selling out of their treats for children affected by the war. to date, they've raised thousands of dollars. nigel sandri and his sister punal sold sweet treats at the los altos farmers market yesterday. the duo donated 100% of their proceeds from the event to the palestine children's relief fund. they launched their

business. la jawab treats during the pandemic to highlight asian american fusion desserts. they say young adults can also help innocent victims from the israel-hamas war in general, raising money and just helping the community that it's also a job that us children have to do to. the last farmers market. they raised $3,000 and during a pop up event on sunday, they raised 4000. >> good for them. well, there's a new effort in california to make it easier to prosecute suspects in car break-ins state senator scott wiener is now looking at revising legislation to tie up a legal loophole and also help leaders crack down on crime. abc7 news reporter lena howland joins us live to explain that loophole that some say has been protecting criminals. good morning, lena. >> well, current state law says that in order to prove someone is guilty of breaking into a car, you must prove that vehicle was locked in the first place. that's the loophole that senator scott wiener is hoping to get

rid of. san francisco's district attorney, brooke jenkins, says criminals are more brazen and more organized. they're going through windows in seconds to take stuff often preying on vulnerable tourists. but because of that current requirement, victims are required to physically come back to san francisco to testify that their doors were locked. jenkins says that prevents the prosecution of these sorts of crimes from being successful. >> my prosecutors could go into court today, even having an eyewitness to an auto burglary, even having video evidence of somebody committing an auto burglary, but without having an individual who owns the car or possesses the car, say that they lock the doors would be required to dismiss a case or see that case be dismissed by a judge. >> it's an absurd requirement that senator wiener introduced similar legislation back in 2018 and 2019, but believes the bills

did not move forward because of the leadership at the time. >> senator wiener hopes the third time will be the charm. live in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. lena thank you. >> just days after the california dmv suspended its permit to operate autonomous vehicles here, cruz has decided to pause its driverless operations nationwide. and in a statement, general motors run cruz said the decision is about rebuilding public trust. while looking inward at its processes and systems. the announcement said this is a proactive measure and is not related to any additional incidents with its cars. it's unclear how long the pause will last, but you'll likely still see cruz cars on the road. and in fact, i just saw one this morning because testing is still allowed with a driver present at the wheel. cruz has driverless operations in phenix, houston, austin, dallas and miami. >> boost for bard. the new funding just announced for the agency's south bay extension in barbie and baseball. >> the special screening tonight

the mass shooting in lewiston, maine, and you're going to see now the man accused of carrying out the shooter. he is still out there. maine's governor now says 18 people have died and some of those victims are being identified. hundreds of law enforcement officers are working to find the suspect. schools and businesses in two counties are closed once again today. abc news reporter a.j. archie is live in maine, where police are collecting evidence and giving insight into the suspected killer's actions. >> good morning, reggie. we are in day two of this massive search and we're learning more and more about the victims from this tragedy, all while law enforcement learns more about the suspect based on the evidence he left behind. overnight, investigators appearing no closer to catching robert cod, the army reservist wanted for the deadly mass shootings in maine. heavily armed police surrounding a home associated with cod thursday night. loud bangs ringing out through the neighborhood as police shouted for cod to surrender. abc's aaron katersky

describes the scene. >> a number of tactical vehicles and troops come in drones, helicopters and our reporters there heard a call calling out commands to say come out, calling the suspect by his name and the suspicion was that they may have had him surround it. >> but nearly two hours later, most of the swat teams leaving the property, police say cod opened fire at a bowling alley and nearby restaurant in the small city of lewiston wednesday night, killing 18 people and injuring 13. abc news learning cod sister told investigators she thought her brother may have been going after an ex girlfriend at the bowling alley. two counties still under shelter in place. advisories this morning. school malls and businesses are closed as far as 50 miles from the shooting scenes. >> everybody is scared. i mean, nobody is used to having a shooter in maine. >> according to sources, investigators finding a suicide

note at cod's home addressed to his son. it did not provide a motive for the rampage, but contained bank information and what are described as rantings cod. this past summer was treated at a mental health facility after reportedly hearing voices and allegedly threatening to attack a national guard facility. now it appears cod was thoughtful about eluding police. he left behind a cell phone which authorities have recovered. apparently cod suspected the phone would be tracked. gloria, back to you. >> i thank you so much for your reporting. and it's well documented that the united states has far and away more mass shootings than any other country in the world. this year, the us has seen 565 mass shootings. this with all but seven states reporting at least one. that's according to the gun violence archive. last year there were 645. they count any shooting with four or more people shot. there were 688 mass shootings in 2021. that's one of the highest counts since the

data started being tracked. killings in maine are rare, with a state reporting a total of 29 last year. >> lewiston is a fairly small city, and to think that this is in our own backyard is just it's just very hard to comprehend. >> and maine has had just three mass shootings since 2018. what happened at lewiston has at least one lawmaker vowed going for change. maine i would point out, has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the country. >> and has a long heritage of responsible gun ownership. >> the time has now come for me to take responsibility for this failure, which is why i now call on the united states congress to ban assault rifles like the one used by the sikh perpetrator of this mass killing in lewiston. >> is a second largest city in maine with about 37,000 people.

hamas is controlling. >> the events that are unfolding in the middle east are affecting us security at the southern border. san diego county officials are calling for a partial closure of the border following a federal alert that hamas and hezbollah militants could be encountered there. jobina what are supervisors proposing? >> gloria san diego county supervisor jim desmond is pushing to keep people without proper documentation out of the us. he says if people have the proper documentation, they should be allowed to cross the border. but it's the new immigrants. he's concerned about. desmond pointed to that memo from us customs and border protection officials sent out last week. the memo warns hamas and hezbollah militants could potentially be encountered at the southwest border. it asks personnel to be on the lookout for several indicators, including military aged men wearing military gear, traveling alone at the border. >> we've got to secure the border, stop reset it and allow
