we learned tonight that the suspect, robert card, has been found dead, ending a massive and exhaustive manhunt. the news breaking some small relief to a close-knit community in mourning. here's abc's trevor holt. >> our community can now breathe a sigh of relief. >> reporter: the urgent manhunt now over. a community still grieving but no longer living in fear. >> it's a good feeling i think for a lot of people. i mean, i definitely feel more safe now. but it's still sad knowing that something this tragic could happen in a small town. >> reporter: almost exactly two days after he killed 18 and injured 13 at a bowling alley and bar in lewiston, maine robert card found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> at 7:45 this evening is when mr. card was located. i won't give you an exact address. it was near the river along androscoggin in lisbon falls was

the location. >> reporter: sources say his body was found near a recycling center where he worked about ten miles between the two kriek crime scenes. the discovery of card's body bringing to an end three days of extensive searches, law enforcement scouring by land, air and water to find him, receiving more than 500 tips and leads from the general public. this morning about a mile from where his body was found divers combed the androscoggin river near the boat ramp where authorities found the subaru they believe the suspect was last driving. a gun discovered inside. earlier today shelter in place orders lifted in the surrounding areas. authorities unable to provide many answers on the suspect's whereabouts this afternoon or whether they believed he was alive. >> is there any information that you have that's leading you in a direction that he may have killed himself and his body is in there, or is it just one of the possibilities? >> well, i think the one of the possibilities is key. because clearly we don't have him located at this point. we don't have him in custody. so all of those options are on the table. >> reporter: law enforcement

sources tell abc news they found a suicide note addressed to the suspect's son containing rantings and personal information like bank account details but haven't revealed clues as to the shooter's motive. >> just have a moment of silence. thank you. >> reporter: today the identities of all 18 victims finally confirmed. the oldest 76 years old. the youngest a teenager, 14-year-old aaron young. >> it hit me when i got here and he wasn't there to greet me way huge smile and a hug. when we got in. i just kept saying he gives the best hugs. >> reporter: aaron was a member of the youth bowling league. his father, bill, was also killed. the two were on a night out at the bowling alley. aaron's stepsister kayla putnam speaking with abc boston affiliate wcvb. >> aaron loved to bowl and it was something they did fairly regularly, and just happened to be that night. >> reporter: bill was an auto mechanic, remembered as the rock of the family. >> he's going to be very missed. it's going to be very hard for

the family right now to be without him because he's kind of the center of the family. >> reporter: we're also learning more about the heroes in their final moments. the family of michael deslauriers says he was shot while rushing the shooter. joe walker's wife telling wcvb she wasn't surprised to hear her husband the bar manager grabbed a knife in a desperate attempt to save others. >> he could have just went out the back door and he didn't. he grabbed the knife and decided to go after him. >> there's a back door in that kitchen that he could have went to. so as he grabbed that knife he could have just went out the door but he grabbed that knife, went right back out. and just decided to defend. >> he was a hero. >> reporter: and for some families glimmers of hope. ben dyer, a father of two, was shot at the bar. doctors removed him from a ventilator. >> he is breathing on his own, and his first words to us as we walked in the room was "i just want to live." and he smiled at both of us.

>> reporter: the news of card's death providing some closure. >> white man with a beard, dark clothes with a rifle pointing at the counter. >> reporter: david greenleaf and lisa osgood were at the bowling alley wednesday night. they were able to escape but lisa says her friend tricia asselin chose to stay back. >> she had gone up to the desk when the shooter came in. it didn't surprise me to know that she stayed and tried to find help. and she lost her life doing it. i don't want people to forget her. she was a great person. >> reporter: i spoke with david and lisa earlier today before the suspect's death was announced. >> how do you feel knowing he's still out there? >> afraid. >> when we got home, my nec my hand was on searching the house. we got a 9 mill and searched the

house. and every closet felt like i was being scared. just that feeling i don't like. and knowing he's out there. but we want to know why, why he took our friends. >> reporter: david and lisa may never know the why but hope the healing with begin. vigils held online to remember those lost. >> in a strange way we are united by this we think of those who were injured and those who were killed and of the circle of loved ones around them. >> reporter: one man's terror no match for a community's resilience and strength. >> byron: our thanks to trevor. we turn now to the online shopping retailer shein. it's the most visited clothing brand on the internet. the company founded in china rose to prominence during the pandemic. now they're facing accusations from some designers that the

retailer copied their work. here's abc's senior white house correspondent selena wang. >> reporter: shein hauls are typically young women showing off hundreds of dollars in merchandise. they've been going viral on social media since 2020. >> we have a massive back to school shein haul. >> this order was $200. look at the receipt. >> i spent $500 at shein. >> also, guys, i got so many things that i even forgot what i even ordered. >> reporter: people then follow those tiktoks to shein. it's the most visited clothing website in the world. customers spend twice as much time on there as on nike.com, the next post popular site. >> there are so many fashion companies out there, but we've never really seen one grow this quickly and take this much market share as quickly as shein did. >> reporter: the idea behind

fast fashion is to get the newest styles on the market as quickly and cheaply as possible so consumers can snap them up while they're the most popular. big fast fashion retailers like zara and h & m normally get runway styles to customers in just a few weeks at a fraction of the luxury price. >> to some degree like h & m and zara operate the way that the fashion industry has for 150 years. they try to predict the trends for the season. they order clothes. at least several weeks in advance. up to several months in advance. and they fill all these retail stores with clothing that they think consumers are going to want to buy. >> reporter: but shein's business model is a little different. >> what they do is they use data and algorithms to track trends, and when a trend emerges they place an order and then they wait to see which product is going to take off. and only then do they go back to their factories and say this is

selling, we need to make more of it. you can get a dress for under $2 on shein. you can get a top for, you know, less than a dollar. you can have it shipped to your house for under probably $10. so i think it was just this perfect combination of a captive audience during the pandemic, everybody being on their phones, combined with speed to market and low price that kind of just propelled them to dominance in the fashion industry. >> reporter: this massive churn through products may not cost consumers a lot of money, but it does have a price. some consumers have started pushing back on the company. even the giudice family faced criticism for their partnership. but in a statement they said, "we 100% believe in ethical practices in all capacities and in doing our due diligence have not seen any substantive evidence definitively showing unethical practices." >> we're actually in my family

home. i just kind of asked my grandparents if i could use this space as a studio. i want it to feel when you walk in here like it is my room or my closet. >> reporter: and this is where all the magic happens. >> yes. >> reporter: bailey prado is an independent clothing designer from southern california. >> this was the original design that i found out was copied. one of my followers actually dmed me a picture of this dress because it's very distinctive and very unique. >> reporter: in august 2021 a popular fashion watchdog account called diet prada posted screen grabs of the shein website side by side with prado's designs. >> how many hours would you say it takes to create these pieces? >> i would say over 20, 30 hours. >> reporter: she says that shein's copied more than 40 of her designs and sold them for way cheaper. prado was selling this set for $175. a very similar design was going for $25 on shein. >> calling out a big company is scary.

and especially when the comments started coming in. >> reporter: so if that crochet collection was still up on shein's website you think that would have meant a big hit to your sales? >> definitely. i think that once your work is out there it loses value in your original designs because why would someone want to pay more for something that they can get for cheaper? >> reporter: she tried to contact shein, but she never heard back. we asked shein about bailey's claims and they said, "shein takes all claims of infringement seriously. it is not our intent to infringe's anyone valid intellectual property and it is not our business model to do so. shein suppliers and marketplace sellers are required to comply with company policy and certify their products do not infringe third party i.p." did you ever take legal action against shein? >> i definitely had some lawyers reach out and e-mail me. and i definitely was interested. but again, it takes a lot of time and money. i did not have the money to pay for these lawyers. >> byron: our thanks to selena.
