seven news. >> the rumble of an earthquake caught by a surveillance camera. that quake central sfo was felt from santa cruz all the way up to santa rosa and beyond. good evening. i'm ama daetz. >> and i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. boy, friday night got going with quite the jolt with a quake centered right underneath san francisco international airport. it hit at 6:38 p.m, measured 3.7 in magnitude. we felt a pretty good shake here at abc seven while am and i were on the air here in the studio, we haven't heard of any damage. don't expect any. with a quake that size, but it's certainly rattled some nerves. >> yes, abc seven news reporter tara campbell joins us live from the newsroom. she spoke with the

us geologic survey. tara? yeah for alma and don, we and dan, we certainly felt that jolt up here in the newsroom as well. >> and what was first reported as a 4.0 magnitude earthquake before being downgraded to a 3.7. but certainly still enough to catch a lot of people off guard, high under the table. >> and just like a duck and cover the head. >> passengers shaken up at the san francisco international airport friday evening with the earthquake centered right near the main terminal, you may have felt nothing. >> you may have felt quite a strong jolt. >> sarah minson is with the usgs and says an earthquake of this magnitude isn't enough to cause structural damage. >> your experience of that earthquake is going to be highly dependent on exactly how close you are to it, what kind of material you're on, whether you're driving or standing still or awake or asleep. >> usgs getting reports of the earthquake being felt from santa cruz to sonoma. it was not a big enough earthquake with significant enough shaking to

trigger an emergency law through the emergency law system, through the wireless emergency alert system, which is the one that we trigger for potentially life threatening shaking in san francisco. some felt it, others didn't. did you feel t earthquake? >> not at all, no. >> we were sitting at our kitchen like coffee bar eating dinner, and i thought someone dropped something upstairs. >> but i looked at her and i was like, oh, i think that's an earthquake. and she's like, no, that was not an earthquake. >> it was too short to be an earthquake. >> i'm new to the city. and so i thought it was like the bart or something. but i don't think there's a station around here. >> rove anslow recently moved to san francisco from minnesota. >> my, like, like innate natural fears around, like, disasters are like snowstorms, blizzards like those things. and so, like, i don't have like the earthquake fear like built into me. and so i don't know. should i be worried? >> well, no, because like these are very tiny earthquakes with very tiny stresses. >> and the chances of them causing something big to happen

is, you know, minute school. >> now, so far, there are no reports of any injuries from this earthquake, but officials say it is a good reminder for all of us to be prepared as we felt tonight, even those smaller earthquakes can cause a pretty good jolt. dan and alma. >> all right, tara, thank you. hey, sure can all right. >> what a way to head into the weekend. we had the earthquake and tomorrow there is a red flag warning for much of the bay area. >> so let's get over to meteorologist sandhya patel, who's tracking all of that for us. sandhya yeah, dan and let's take a look at the earthquake situation first and then we'll talk about the fire danger. so just minutes ago, southeast of tahoe near coalville, there have been some earthquakes, so we are seeing multiple earthquake reports today. one near mount hamilton. earlier in the day. but the one that everybody has been talking about is the one by millbrae. let's talk about what happened there. this was shortly after 630, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake was the largest of the reports. there were 35 reports. it's this is near sfo

close to the san andreas fault. and i've been getting reports from all around the bay area and you can see the shake intensity of how far it was felt. much of the bay area felt it. and when we even zoom it out some more, even north of ukiah and down towards the monterey carmel area, it was felt. the other big story is the red flag warning. it starts at 5 a.m. tomorrow. it starts for the hills first and then the valleys in the evening goes until sunday night. the concern is gusts 40 to 60 miles an hour out of the north northeast. humidity dropping. any fires that develop are going to quickly spread. there's a wind advisory at 8 a.m. tomorrow for the hills going until sunday evening. those gusty winds could knock down power lines, causing a few outages, downed tree limbs . so keep that in mind. and as we go hour by hour, you'll notice the winds ramping up tomorrow afternoon. but the strongest winds coming in tomorrow night going into early sunday. that's when the greatest fire danger is expected, particularly in the hills. we also have a frosted visory for

tomorrow morning in the north bay valleys as those temperatures before that fire danger gets here will be plunging mid 30s or lower and frost will form. i'll be back to let you know how long cold weather will last and how long that fire danger will be elevated coming up on gma. all right. >> we'll check back. and this is the largest red flag warning for the bay area since october 2021. and we didn't have a single warning last year. there's a lot of brush and grass that's overgrown thanks to the extremely wet winter. abc7 news south bay reporter lauren martinez has more on the concern . >> a mild fire season this year could change with the first red flag warning issued throughout the bay area this weekend. >> this kind of wind event is something that happens routinely this time of year. >> the month of october is known for producing catastrophic wildfires. was this weekend. the national weather service says there is less concern for dense areas from recent rains and the cool summer. >> the soil is not saturated, but it is moist and wet.

>> but there is much more concern for finer grass year spaces scrapping a type of fuel that can burn very quickly and so that's where i think people should be most cautious. cal state east bay assistant professor tony marks block says this year more prescribed burns should be happening. controlled burns create fire resilience and prevent fires from being extreme or erratic. what we see is a potential window in the coming weeks if this event really dries things out to allow for more prescribed fire. >> and i really encourage agencies to take advantage of those windows and burn the areas that are necessary to burn marks, block says. >> what should be of concern is how much moisture is needed in the coming weeks if we don't get rain for another month or so, then we could and we get more and more of these red flag events.

>> we could have disasters occur on a scale that we haven't seen since, you know, a couple of years ago, p-g-and-e's says. >> they're increasing their staff this weekend, but they are not anticipating any public safety power shutoffs in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. >> all right. much of the east bay is also going to be under a red flag warning through the weekend. high winds and dry brush can, of course, be a deadly, dangerous combination for wildfires. and firefighters are worried that people may be complacent, thinking the fire season is over. conditions this weekend have many firefighters on standby, especially with how quickly wildfires can break out in grassy areas. fire officials telling residents in fire prone areas to have supplies ready in case they need to evacuate. a lot of our vegetation is still intact, hasn't burned and some high winds and our folks thinking that the fire season or the vegetation fire season is over. >> it's just delayed. >> fire officials say that while

they hope nothing will happen, of course they are prepared and ready to respond if needed. and you can keep track of the temperatures with the same tools that sandia uses every day. it's all on our app. just download the abc7 bay area app wherever you stream. >> new at 11 multiple sources tell abc7 news a work laptop belonging to alameda county da pamela price was stolen from her vehicle. the car burglary happened around 3 p.m. at the alameda county family justice center on 27th street in oakland. sources say the da was told to file a police report online because she didn't want to wait for an officer to arrive. we will keep you updated as this story unfolds. >> also new at 11, a bay area native who is a former major league baseball player is back in california tonight to face charges in a 2021 lake tahoe murder. surveillance showed the suspect near the scene of the crime. we showed this to you. danny seraphine was extradited from nevada and landed in placer county today day. according to the sheriff's office, he was taken off the plane, then booked

into the county jail. he's expected to be in court next week. seraphine is accused of killing his father in law and severely injuring his mother in law. he went to sarah high school in san mateo and played for several major league teams. >> developing news now out of maine where the gunman suspected of killing 18 people wednesday night was found dead. his body was found near a recycling center where he had worked. this ends a frantic two day search that had people being told not to leave their homes. abc news reporter reena roy has the latest from investigators. a 48 hour manhunt coming to an end friday night. >> police finding the body of 40 year old robert card. >> like many people, i'm breathing a sigh of relief tonight, knowing that robert card is no longer a threat to anyone. >> card was found dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound. >> and tonight, the city of lewiston and the state of maine begin to move forward on what

will be a long and difficult road to healing. but we will heal. >> authorities had been zeroing in on this river cards car had been discovered near the boat launch there shortly after wednesday's deadly rampage that left 18 dead and 13 injured. meanwhile officials releasing the identities of those who were killed at a local bowling alley in the town of lewiston then and a restaurant several miles away. so many of the victims leaving young children behind. arthur strout was a father of five. people loved him. >> you know, they just loved him. the youngest victim, aaron young, was just 14, killed along with his father, bill, in the bowling alley. >> aaron lovable. and it was something they did fairly regularly. and just happened to be that night. >> david greenleaf and lisa osgood also were inside the bowling alley when gunfire broke out. lisa's best friend, trisha ashland, was killed while trying to call 911. david says he saw the suspect drive away past

police. i thought maybe someone got out and was leaving, but they drove so casual. >> turns out it was him. >> abc news has learned card's sister told investigators she thought her brother may have been going after an ex-girlfriend who was frequently in the bowling alley. sources tell abc news that authorities found a suicide note addressed to card's son on with rantings and bank information inside, but no specific motive. reena roy, abc news, lewiston, maine. >> the israeli military is preparing to expand its ground operation into gaza. the idf launched airstrikes throughout the territory to create optimal conditions for forces on the ground. israeli missiles struck hamas military targets, including missile launch sites and command centers. meanwhile, the humanitarian crisis in gaza has grown more dire, with many residents running low on food, water and medicine. the territory's health ministry has said the palestinian death toll

covid things have gotten harder in recent years. competition from big box retailers and places like spirit and amazon have hit small businesses hard and many of them now struggle to make ends meet. seeing that her dad's store was struggling this year to adams's daughter made a now viral post on social media asking people to buy halloween costumes like this right here in the store. >> if you live in the bay area and you have literally any need for halloween, give my dad a fighting chance against jeff bezos and visit dunham's party and toy. >> that video has now gained thousands of views online and touched the hearts of many not least of all. >> steve oh, it made me cry, you know, it was the funniest thing because i get this call from her and she says, daddy, i hope you're not mad. i made a video to help you and i didn't tell you. >> one of those who saw the video was dana, trey. trey is new to the area and decided to do her halloween shopping at dunham's on friday. >> i just, like, realized that it's so close to me that i just, like, really wanted to support and come in and see what it's

all about. trey isn't alone either. >> over the past week, steve says foot traffic to the store has noticeably increased and for everyone to sign to stop by. he and his family have only one message. thank you. >> we are so appreciative. i mean, from the bottom of our hearts. >> in san mateo, tim johns, abc seven news. >> that is so nice. sweet isn't he? it seems like a great guy, too. halloween candy is getting pricey. the rising cost of sweets is impacting how generous people can be with their trick or treater. visitors, especially chocolate coco. get this cost 61% more than last year at the highest in decades. it's sitting there now with the price after a rainy harvest season, americans are expected to spend $3.6 billion just on candy this season. that's an increase of 16% from just last year. another 8.6 billion will be spent on costumes and other holiday expenses. >> the cdc is now recommending routine pox vaccines for those who are at high risk, formerly known as monkeypox, spread

rapidly throughout the us when it arrived in may of last year. now, cases started to dwindle in august of that same year when people started getting the vaccine. now the cdc is recommending the vaccine for all people over 18 and at high risk of getting mpox. >> so it's kind of folding vaccination into regular sexual health care. so along with getting tested for stis regularly, along with getting vaccinated for some sexually transmitted infections like hepatitis b, having mpox vaccine as a part of your general sexual health care is what these guidance guidelines would add. >> experts say if you received both doses of the vaccine already, there are no new recommendations to get more. this year's commercial dungeness crab season will be delayed at least two weeks, which means they're likely won't be any crab on thanksgiving tables. the delay is part of an effort to protect migrating whales that could become entangled in netting from the crab traps this season traditionally opens november 15th, but now officials with the department of fish and

wildlife will reevaluate the risk to whales on november 17th to see if the commercial season can open by december 1st. no crab means extra turkey. >> guess there you go. >> all right. let's turn our attention now to the weather forecast and the earthquake tonight. >> yeah, a lot to talk about. meteorologist sandy patel is here. sandhya. yeah. and dan and omar. let's take a look at that earthquake. one more time. if you felt it at 638 magnitude 3.7 near millbrae, the depth was eight miles. >> a lot of people reported feeling it and now let's talk about the wind and the fire alert. elevated fire danger this weekend. dry downsloping winds and lowering humidity will mean the fire danger will run high. you can see much of northern california central california and southern california will be under a red flag warning. notice the wind direction out of the north northeast. it's a very drying wind. the set up in the atmosphere as you look at live. doppler seven is a trough is going to deepen. high pressure is going to build in. and as you look at the computer animation, you'll see what happens is when the to get a little too close

together the winds you can see the wind arrows getting closer together, stronger winds coming out of the north northeast. and that's what's going to elevate that fire danger. so we see it here, san saturday night, tomorrow night, yellows and oranges indicating high to very high fire danger. parts of the north and east bay, a little bit of red includes very high to extreme fire danger going into your sunday as well. so definitely stay aware of your surroundings and have it to go bag. here's what happens to the relative humidity with offshore flow tomorrow morning. it's fine , but it's later on in the day that the humidity values drop down to 10% in napa, concord and 11% in fairfield. those values go down to the single digits. sunday you can see 6% in napa and 7% in fairfield, which is why that fire danger will be running high. pier 39 camera, a lovely view, right now. high fire danger this weekend. strongest winds late tomorrow into sunday morning. it is going to be a cold and frosty start tomorrow morning, especially in

the north bay. sunny and milder for the afternoon. not just tomorrow, but also on sunday. your temperatures right now in the 40s and the 50s. so we do have that autumn chill out there by morning. you're looking at numbers that will be near freezing for parts of the north bay valleys, 30s and 40s. elsewhere mainly clear skies. tomorrow afternoon, looking at a milder day certainly will get windy low 60s to low 70s plenty of sun out there for the walk to end alzheimer's in san ramon. dan will be the emcee of the event. go by and say hello and enjoy the walk because it's going to be cool in the morning during the walk. and then sun will be out. it'll be a little bit milder as that walk ends for trick or treating. it's going to be nothing but treats for halloween. we're looking at 60 when the sun sets, the temperature is coming down into the 50s by 9 p.m. with a few creepy clouds, but not bone chilling cold. accuweather seven day forecast high fire danger this weekend, but milder afternoons expected and then we have a nice halloween treat for you on tuesday for the little

friday night in sacramento and like he did in the playoffs. steph curry came through with another big game. steph had 50 points in golden state's game seven win over the former warriors assistant mike brown and the kings in the spring. and he had another fantastic game friday, scoring 16 of his game high 41 in the third quarter. the warriors scored 39 points in the third and at one point led by 18 points. now the kings closed in the fourth within five, but with under a minute to play, steph hits a huge three and celebrates the night night warriors win 122 114 and get their first win of this new season in you love to play well especially on the road and silence the crowd and get a big win for us because i don't know if you remember last year it took us like 14 games or something like that to win a road game to start the season. >> so to get our first one is a big deal. >> despite being diagnosed with a concussion after losing to the vikings, niners qb brock purdy

has was a full participant in practice today and may be cleared to play in sunday's game at levi's stadium against cincinnati. head coach kyle shanahan says he will be tested again tomorrow. shanahan was asked if they had considered not playing purdy regardless of the test results that come tomorrow. he says, hey, if purdy is cleared, he will start on sunday game one of the world series in texas, former giants manager bruce bochy looking for his fourth championship. the rangers trailed 5 to 3 in the bottom of the ninth when corey seager hit a game tying two home, two run home, run to extra are tied at five. galileo high graduate kyle nelson, who is the nephew of our assistant assignment editor and who, by the way, pitched out of a jam for the d-backs in the 10th. he went an inning and a third and didn't allow a run. but he was taken out in the 11th, and that's when adolis garcia hit a walk off homer to win it for the rangers. six five. the final game two is on saturday night and the sharks zero and seven on the young

or like a san francisco burrito, or taste something different to come and see like, "oh, this is mexican, but it's different. i haven't seen it before." i think it's important to expand mexican food in terms of how we know it. you can have different flavors that they might be new for people in the bay area, because they haven't experienced them in mexico, or flavors that we just came up with, kind of original flavors. i mean, it's something simple always, you know, like something straightforward. so, first of all, the ingredient, it has to be a fresh ingredient, it has to be a good ingredient. but the other side that we're looking for is the authenticity on the flavors. we're trying to make the classic tacos the same way that they are made in mexico. we make our tortillas by hand. octopus taco, it's very usual when you go to baja or you go to sinaloa in mexico.

but it's not that known around here. and i think what we're just doing is expanding that variety of food that we can offer and that mexican food that can happen. we make our own birria, so we braise it for about 14 hours in different, like, chili and spices. we make these awesome fries that are crunchy french fries. we put on top cheese, pico de gallo, and guacamole. so, it can be a whole meal by itself, but it's awesome when you're having a beer or a great margarita. it's worth to try it. [chuckles] every time i go to mexico, i always ask for the café de la olla. all the flavors is delicious.

i'm gonna make the buenas dias, which is the cocktail with café de la olla. this is amaretti that i make. some tequila cream and tequila reposado. [ice rattling] voila. buenas dias. daniel: i'm born and raised in mexico city, so i-- i mean, i grew up with these flavors. i grew up with tacos in my life all day. and then during my kitchen training, i learned a lot about ingredients, and then i just apply ingredients to what i knew from since i was a kid, you know, like, those flavors. when you have the right product, the flavors come out by itself. you just have to treat it right. the product you find in san francisco and the bay area, seafood and produce, it's amazing, so why don't you use it?
