now at five wildfire risk. the national weather service issuing a red flag warning for much of the bay area that warning is in effect right now. good morning. it is saturday, october 28th. i'm gloria rodriguez. let's get right to that red flag warning for much of the bay area that starts a little bit later on today. meteorologist lisa arjun is here with the details. good morning, lisa. hey, gloria. >> good morning to you. yes, the critical fire weather will be

with us all weekend long, but it will peak later tonight into sunday morning. and that will be in the hills of the north and east bay. but right now, let's cover where it is. it is everywhere across the bay area primarily, but we're looking at the north northeast, winds 15 to 30 miles an hour. gusts 40 to 60 miles an hour, bringing the relative humidity anywhere from 35 to 10. and that could create fire starts and allow the fires to spread easily. we also have a wind advisory. 8:00 this morning through 5:00 tomorrow for those northeast. winds could gust as high as 50 miles an hour, bringing down trees, power lines and those unsecured objects. so objects. so make sure you put the lids on those trash cans. you'll be chasing them down the street. hopefully not the winds out of the north right now. saint helena, 32 miles an hour. you can see mount diablo. not too bad. current numbers are chilly once again, we are cold with the upper 30s in the north bay to the mid and upper 40s. elsewhere so we'll be looking at our 24 hour temperature change that says we're a little warmer but boy it is cold out there. so

a sunshine and gusty winds arriving. our red flag warning throughout the day. we'll talk about the winds all throughout the afternoon into tomorrow. and when they will subside and the week ahead. coming up, gloria. >> all right, lisa, thank you so much. the red flag warning is the largest of its kind for the bay area since october of 2021. we didn't have a warning last year. there is a lot of brush and grass that has overgrown because of the extremely wet winter. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez tells us more about the concerns as a mild fire season this year could change with the first red flag warning issued throughout the bay area this weekend. >> this kind of wind event is something that happens routinely this time of year. >> the month of october is known for producing catastrophic wildfires. this weekend, the national weather service says there is less concern for dense areas from recent rains and the cool summer. >> the soil is not saturated, but it is moist and wet. but there is much more concern for

finer grassier spaces scrapping a type of fuel that can burn very quickly. and so that's where i think people should be most cautious. >> cal state east bay assistant professor tony marks block says this year more prescribed burns should be happening. controlled burns create fire resilience and prevent fires from being extreme or erratic. what we see is a potential window in the coming weeks if this event really dries things out to allow for more prescribed fire. >> and i really encourage agencies to take advantage of those windows and burn the areas that are necessary to burn marks, block says. >> what should be of concern is how much moisture is needed in the coming weeks if we don't get rain for another month or so, then then we could and we get more and more of these as red flag events. >> we could have disasters occur on a scale that we haven't seen

since, you know, a couple of years ago, p-g-and-e's says they're increasing their staff this weekend, but they are not anticipating any public safety power shutoffs in the south bay. >> lauren martinez, abc seven news. and you can keep track of the temperatures with the same tools at least that uses. >> it's all on our app. just download the abc7 bay area app wherever you stream. and did you feel it? a 3.7 magnitude earthquake rattled the bay area on friday evening. we have not heard of any damage, but it definitely puts some of us on edge. the epicenter was on the peninsula just hitting just under the san francisco international airport at 6:38 p.m. abc7 news reporter tara campbell spoke with the us geological survey and has reaction. >> hide under the table and just like a duck and cover the head. >> passengers shaken up at the san francisco international airport friday evening with the earthquake centered right near the main terminal.

>> you may have felt nothing. you may have felt quite a strong jolt. >> sarah minson is with the usgs and says an earthquake of this magnitude isn't enough to cause structural damage. >> your experience of that earthquake is going to be highly dependent on exactly how close you are to it, what kind of material you're on, whether you're driving or standing still or awake or asleep. >> usgs getting reports of the earthquake being felt from santa cruz to sonoma. >> it was not a big enough earthquake with significant enough shaking to trigger an emergency law through the emergency law system, through the wireless emergency alert system, which is the one that we trigger for potentially life threatening shaking in san francisco. >> some felt it, others didn't. did you feel the earthquake? >> not at all. no >> we were sitting at our kitchen like coffee bar, eating dinner, and i thought someone dropped something upstairs. >> but i looked at her and i was like, oh, i think that's an earthquake. and she's like, no, that was not an earthquake. >> it was too short to be an earthquake. >> i'm new to the city. and so i

thought it was like the bart or something. but i don't think there's a station around here. >> rove winslow recently moved to san francisco from minnesota. >> my like, like innate natural fears around like, disasters are like snowstorms, blizzards like those things. and so, like i don't have like the earthquake fear like built into me. and so i don't know. should i be worried? >> well, no, because like these are very tiny earthquakes with very tiny stresses. >> and the chances of them causing something big to happen is, you know, many skule. >> now, so far, there are no reports of any injuries from this earthquake, but officials say it is a good reminder for all of us to be prepared in the newsroom. tara campbell, abc7 news. >> very good reminder. thank you, tara. multiple sources tell abc7 news that a work laptop that belongs to alameda county da pamela price was stolen from her car. the car burglary happened around 3 p.m. yesterday at the alameda county family justice center in oakland. sources say the da was told to file a police report online if

she didn't want to wait for an officer to arrive. we'll keep you updated on this. develop story. a bay area native and former major league baseball player is back in california as he faces charges in a 2021 murder. it happened in lake tahoe. danny seraphine was extradited from nevada and landed in placer county. according to the sheriff's office, he was taken off the plane and then booked into the county jail. he is expected to be in court next week. seraphine is accused of killing his father in law and severely injuring his mother in law. he went to sarah high school in san mateo and played for several major league teams. happening right now, a massive pro-palestinian rally in london. and you could see thousands, thousands of people in the streets outside big ben. officials estimate that about 100,000 people will be participating today. this as the israeli military says its troops are on the ground inside gaza. the idf says its warplanes hit 150 underground targets

overnight. and we'll have more on this a later on in our newscast. and new developments, the search for the suspect in the main mass shooting is now over. authorities say robert hard was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. abc news reporter morgan norwood tells us more about the recovery and the community as the investigation continues. this morning, the massive manhunt for robert card now over after police say they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> the lockdown that kept residents on edge for nearly 48 hours. lifts id, like many people. >> i'm breathing a sigh of relief tonight knowing that robert card is no longer a threat to anyone. >> state police say card was found last night around 745 near recycling center where he used to work. reaction pouring in from state and federal leaders. president biden writing, this has been a tragic two days, adding, i once again call on republicans in congress to fulfill their obligation to keep the american people safe until

that day comes, i will continue to do everything in my power to end this gun violence epidemic. authorities had been focusing in on this river where they say car dumped his car at a boat launch just hours after wednesday's massacre that left 18 dead and 14 injured. the victims, ranging in age from 14 to 76, many leaving behind young children. arthur strout was a father of five. >> people loved him, you know, they just loved him. >> david greenleaf and lisa osgood were inside that bowling alley when gunfire rang out. lisa's best friend, tricia aslin, was killed while trying to call 911. david says he saw the suspect drive away past police. i thought maybe someone got out and was leaving, but they drove so casual. >> turns out it was him. >> and though the exhaustive manhunt is now over, police are still investigating a motive. sources telling abc news card's sister told investigators that she thought her brother may have been going after an

highest in decades. americans are expected to spend $3.6 billion on candy this year. that's an increase of 16% from last year. another $8.6 billion will be spent on costumes and other holiday expenses. new this morning, the city of san francisco is dealing with overcrowding at county jails as the daily population of inmates has grown by 32% from last october to right now to deal with the influx, the city is opening a jail annex in their san bruno location, which has six open dorms. that area has been closed since 2020. san francisco county jail number three lists their capacity at more than 750 inmates as drug dealers in san francisco could soon face murder charges. california governor gavin newsom announced a new task force to take a closer look at drug overdoses in the city. this is part of a new effort by state and city officials to hold drug dealers accountable. the task force will investigate opioid

deaths similar to homicide cases and gathering evidence on drug traffickers as well. >> the objective is to make sure that we are looking into who is selling fentanyl to the individuals who are dying of overdose on our streets every day. >> the team will include personnel from sfpd, the da's office, chp, and the california national guard. governor newsom says this task force is fighting for those affected by the crisis . it's expected to roll out early next year. the cdc is recommending routine mpox vaccines for those who are at high risk mpox formerly known as monkeypox, spread rapidly throughout the us. when it arrived in may of last year. cases started to dwindle last august, when people started getting that vaccine. now the cdc is recommending the vaccine for all people over 18 and also those at high risk of getting mpox. so it's kind of folding and pox vaccination into regular sexual health care.

san ramon. the route is three miles, but there's also a one mile shortcut. so i know a lot of you are heading out there for the walk today. we have meteorologist lisa argen tracking the forecast. and lisa, it's going to be a little chilly out there this morning for those who are going. so they should probably have a jacket right? >> yeah, just to start out because we have plenty of sunshine and the temperatures will be comfortable throughout the late morning hours and we'll be looking at numbers throughout the afternoon, even milder. so plenty of sunshine and we'll need that. we've got those 30s this morning, but we are warmer than we were yesterday day at this time. so temperatures will slowly modify as we get through the week ahead. in terms of our overnight lows. so in san ramon today, 8:00, 43 degrees, 930 upper 40s, mid 50 at 11:00 and by noontime it is a comfortable 60 degrees. here's a look at live doppler seven. the system to the east allowing for offshore winds to develop throughout the day today and we passed on some advisories to you early on. but right now we're looking at the current numbers

where we had a little bit of fog for santa rosa 36 degrees right now, 45 in oakland is 47 in fremont as well as san jose. and good visibility here where we're looking at that sun not coming up until 730 and tomorrow, next weekend, we do fall back high fire danger this weekend. the strongest winds will be late today into sunday morning. and looking at our warmer days arriving throughout the middle of the week, the winds will subside by late tomorrow and then we'll be looking at those overnight lows modifying as well , our fire danger index follows the wind pattern 8:00 this morning. notice we're in the low category. the green. and then as we go through about 4:00, the blues and the yellows getting a little bit critical here to high fire danger throughout the afternoon. and in fact, this will carry over from late tomorrow into sunday. so we're looking at the gusty winds up above 1000ft to 2000ft. and that will take us anywhere from 50 to 60 miles an hour. this is 3:00

early tomorrow morning. so this is when the winds could be quite strong as we get into sunrise on sunday. a look at the relative humidity. early this morning, 85 to 90. but as those winds get going, 4:00 this afternoon, 17, petaluma. 24% in hayward. and look what happens by late in the afternoon. it continues to not only be knocked down from the teens to the single digits in parts as we get through your sunday. so some of the driest weather, the windiest weather we have seen in years on the way over the weekend in terms of the winds, you'll notice starting out north and east bay with the winds over 25 miles an hour. and by 5:00 saturday, we're looking at those wind gusts over 25 to 30 miles an hour through 11:00. and this is our period that we're watching from late saturday into sunday. and this will take us into the rest of your sunday morning. and by sunday afternoon, we'll finally begin to see these winds become

live or work. but now more people are even factoring in climate change when planning their families. >> folks are either choosing not to have children or are having fewer children than they consider ideal. in part in large part because of climate change. so while there are other other are other factors, climate change is a growing reason why it's turning into a global opinion. >> this year, hewlett-packard asked 5000 people how climate change impacts their decisions. 91% surveyed say they have anxiety about the climate, and 53% of that group said the climate has impacted their perspective on having more children or any at all. >> this trend of folks having fewer kids than they would like to or having no kids at all, right. when they would ideally like to have children. i think it's a sign of how dire the climate change situation is. >> csu east bay assistant professor of sociology amara miller, says many parents say they simply don't want their children growing up in a world of natural disasters caused by climate change. but others, including kristin weaver, say

emergen-c crystals. the news up, staffing a couple of crews, a few more wildland apparatus, ice water tenders hand crews. >> so we're prepared now a 530 increased fire danger to the national weather service issuing a red flag warning for much of the bay area starting this morning. >> good morning to you and happy saturday. i'm gloria rodriguez, meteorologist lisa argent is here to tell us more about that red flag warning and lisa, how big of a concern is this? >> it's a big deal. we haven't seen one. this strong, moderate to strong in quite some time with winds gusting to 60 miles an hour on the peaks of the north and east bay hills. so, yes, it certainly is not unusual. and as you look at the highlighted area where isn't there a red flag warning that

would be along the bay shore, everywhere else we're looking at north northeast, winds 15 to 30 miles an hour with those gusts 40 to 60 miles an hour. the minimum humidity could be as low as 10. so this is definitely ripe to start. fires spread fires and the wind advisory starting earlier in the higher elevations, 8:00 with those winds gusty. and then these could knock down trees. the good news is that we have seen a little bit of rain. so some of these trees are not as drought stressed as they have been. those unsecured objects, though, will be blowing around. and already the north winds 20 to 30 miles an hour from mount tam to mount diablo. and as current numbers start out this morning, we are certainly chilly again with 36 santa rosa, 40in san ramon, 45. in oakland, but that is a little warmer than it was yesterday. so we'll talk about those temperatures warming up throughout the week. but as for the day to day, it's the winds we're watching. temperatures mid and upper 60s by 1:00. but those winds we'll start gusting and the critical winds will be later

on tonight into early sunday. gloria we'll talk about that and show you how windy it'll get right around your neighborhood. >> all right. thank you, lisa. we'll check in with you in a little bit. hi winds and dry brush can be a deadly combination for wildfire fires. like lisa mentioned. this impacts much of the bay area, including in the east bay. firefighters there are worried that people may be complacent, thinking that fire season is over. our conditions this weekend have crews on standby, especially with how quickly wildfires can break out in grassy areas. fire officials are telling people in fire prone areas to have supplies ready in case they need to evacuate. >> a lot of our vegetation is still intact, hasn't burned at and some high winds and our folks thinking that the fire season or the vegetation fire season is over or it's just delayed, this fire official goes on to say, while they hope nothing will happen, they are prepared and ready to respond if they are needed. >> as we continue to monitor the conditions, you can get alerts like this one sent straight to

nothing they are zero and eight and in dc on sunday. all right that's a look at sports i'm dan ashley hope you have a great saturday. >> all right dan thank you so much. and let's get a check of your bay area forecast right now with meteorologist lisa argen. lisa, how's it looking today? >> all right, gloria, good morning to you. we are watching the winds developing. we have a red flag warning not only today but for tomorrow and the peak wind gusts from about noon time today until noon on sunday when those gusty offshore winds will be dropping. our relative humidity. live doppler seven right now. we did have a little bit of fog up in santa rosa, but right now, clear sky, 36 there. a system dropping down to our north and east has allowed for those winds to kick up throughout the next 48 hours. it is 50 in san francisco. so overnight lows tonight will be a little milder due to all that wind that develops today and really peaks through the overnight hours. 47 in hayward, 46 in fremont. and a nice view here. sunrise not until 730. so

high fire danger this weekend. strongest winds will be happening throughout the afternoon to the early morning hours tomorrow and through about midday. then they'll begin to dial back and we'll look for the warmer days this week and modify those overnight lows as well. our fire danger index starts out low today, this morning, but by noontime through about 4:00, you can see we're in the high category, upper elevations already seeing winds of 30 miles an hour. those could peak up to 60 miles an hour. and by 8:00 tonight, we are in the very high category for the north and east bay hills, mount diablo, mount saint helena taking us through early sunday. and as the winds coincide with that driest time of day, the relative humidity continues to plummet. so the colors indicating the moisture being stripped from the atmosphere. 4:00 this afternoon, 17% in petaluma, about 10% in concord. not much recovery overnight. that's when we do see

some of the recovery. usually with the relative humidity increasing, but not so much as we get into 8:00 tomorrow, starting out at 11% by the delta and even down lower in the north bay. look at napa, 6, san ramon, 6, as well as fremont. so very dry conditions out there. the good news is the atmosphere, i should say, the grasses and fuels have retained some of the moisture from the recent rain. so because of that, even with these gusty winds, we are expecting that to help us out a little bit. but still, look at the north northeast winds throughout the day today in increasing the reds and the oranges indicate the strongest winds along the east side here of the valley coming in from sacramento, gusting in the upper elevation. 68 today in richmond, as well as fremont with low 70s in our inland valleys. so windy a red flag morning. and as we get through the middle of the week, temperatures warm up and there's a system that wants to cloud us up. but whether or not it brings us any rain at this
