night with conditions favorable for wildfires to ignite. good evening. i'm karina nova. we're going to get right to spencer christian and the weather. and spencer. it's been a while since we've seen a warning this large for the bay area. what are the wind conditions look like out there right now? >> right now, karina, the wind is breezy, but it's going to turn gusty in the next hour or so, just after midnight. so let's take a look at our red flag warning, which as you pointed out, covers virtually the entire bay area, with the exception of the bay shoreline. so winds will be out of the northeast at about 15 to 30mph overnight with gusts 40 to 60mph in the higher elevation days. of course, with the low humidity

that we have in these high, gusty, strong, gusty winds, fliers can start and intensify quite rapidly. we also have a wind advisory in effect until 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. that's for much of the bay area as well. not just the hills, but even the interior parts of the north bay and the east bay. winds this strong, of course, can knock down tree limbs, cause few power outages for unsecured objects, will obviously get blown around. so what can we do to during this critical fire conditions to actually help out avoid equipment that produces sparks? keep vehicles off dry grass and of course, properly dispose of cigarets matches. make sure campfires are out. a closer look at this and the accuweather seven day forecast a little bit later. karina >> all right spencer, thank you. and as spencer just mentioned, not only is there a red flag warning in place through sunday evening, but also a wind advisory for the bay area, some parts of the east bay are designated at risk of extreme fire danger. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has that part of the story. >> as the sun sets on the

oakland hills, wind speeds are expected to pick up with both a red flag warning and wind advisory in place for the east bay hills. >> as the winds blow, they are drying out a lot of the finer fuels such as grasses and shrubs across the region. >> alexis clouser is a meteorologist with the national weather service as she explains, the bay area will face the strongest offshore wind event of the past two years and the most expensive that is extend ing throughout the north bay zones. >> as far south as the santa lucia mountains. it's expanding much further than what we've seen over the past two years. and in fact, in 2022 we did not even issue any red flag warnings. >> clouser says to expect wind gusts of up to 45 miles an hour, 60 miles an hour in some isolated areas. dry conditions combined with strong winds can lead to rapid fire spread up in the oakland hills. the warning signs indicate extreme fire danger. >> the fire department here is

really good about going around and inspecting all the houses. >> lloyd santee lives in the oakland hills. he says he and his neighbors have done a better job maintaining their yards, which he thinks will help if everything was still all full of vegetation an and the trees weren't trimmed, we'd probably be in a lot more concern and panic mode. >> but because people are doing what they set out to do to keep the fires from coming back, it's helped out a lot. >> sharon birch has lived in the oakland hills for 50 years. like others, she has cut down big trees, knowing how strong winds can bring them down. >> it's part of life because certainly with the way climate change is going on, i don't think we're going to see a lot of improvement in in fire danger . but i think people are so much more aware of it that that we're actually a lot safer than we might have been, say, ten years ago in the east bay anser hassan abc7 news. >> and from the east bay to the north bay, residents are dealing with a largest red flag warning for the bay area since october 21st. abc seven news reporter cornell bernard shows us the preparation for a wildfire

emergency. there >> red flags are flying at fire stations across sonoma county warning the public about high fire danger in mill valley. families and kids getting some hands on training at southern marin fire station number nine, the public open house is part of october's fire prevention month. >> these are the guys that are going to when we have the big wildland fire is going to save our butts. >> the timing of this event colliding with this weekend's red flag fire warning this station crew is up, staffed and on high alert by saturday afternoon, winds were starting to pick up and every time we get below for 30, 30, 35, our relative humidity is when we can potentially expect some extreme fire behavior. >> so that's kind of where we are this weekend. >> chief patterson says it's the first red flag warning for october in two years and residents are getting nixle alerts about the increased fire danger. >> red flag warning in effect 1028 through 1029. be cautious.

>> the concern here in the area is a fire on mount tam, which burns mill valley down like the sign says, no parking here on miller avenue in mill valley. >> city officials want to use this stretch as an evacuation route in case of a fire. just something happens. >> there's only two roads out of mill valley. so if these roads are being used for parking other than a median, then those escape routes will be blocked for everybody. >> we're asking your viewership to be very vigilant this weekend . >> cal fire chief mike marcucci says it's been a productive year of prescribed controlled burns producing a fire threat. but despite a mild fire season, he says the danger isn't over yet. and residents should be ready to leave their homes if a fire breaks out. >> a reminder to our communities to have their go bag packed. this is october. it is a very destructive month in california. historically have your plan be ready to evacuate if a fire does start in a rapidly evolves in the north bay.

yesterday. protesters made their way into grand central station and from the ferry building to the freeway, san francisco saw a huge protest as well, with people filling market street. and then at one point getting on the freeway. organizers estimate the crowd size to be well over 10,000 people tell abc seven news reporter tara campbell followed the crowd and spoke to some who have family caught in the middle of the war. the flags waving and people chanting. >> and we are here in the thousands today to call for a cease fire, taking to the streets of san francisco saturday in support of the people of palestine. the situation in gaza right now is extremely dire and horrendous. people in gaza don't have water, food or fuel. marching down market street, making their way to the central freeway. >> police temporarily closing the ramps. >> this event is organized by a coalition of organizations in the bay area, whether they're palestinian, whether they're

black and indigenous. we all came out in a crowd of 15,000 and many with family in gaza don't know what happened to them if they're still alive or if they're being killed. >> we don't know when was the last time you heard from your in-laws? we haven't heard like maybe three weeks, two weeks, she says. >> the images are haunting and hard on her daughter. >> it's traumatize seeing, just hearing about it, like, imagine being there right now. >> but still, she watches, waiting and hoping. >> i do want to see it because i want to be updated on who's who's there and what's going on there. and if any of my relatives is still alive or not. >> and for some, it's about showing up simply to support. >> i've just been really struggling with seeing the news over the past few weeks and i wanted to just be around people who also care about what's going on. >> tara campbell, abc seven news three a protest delayed the start of today's football game

at uc berkeley. >> 15 people were taken off the field and arrested after the staging of a sit in the protest was over. the suspension of a professor because of the incident. the cal usc game started about 15 minutes late. a pedestrian is dead after being hit by a speeding car that t-boned another vehicle this morning in lower nob hill in san francisco. the crash happened on post near leavenworth street just after 11 a.m. the driver of the car was not hurt. they are currently in police custody. the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision are under investigation. the chronicle reports. the us secret service could be accessing more than 500 cameras around union square ahead of next month's apec conference. it's the agency which is responsible for protection of the president and foreign dignitaries recently requested access to the surveillance systems in the area. the department of homeland security will be granting national special security event

perry, best known for his portrayal of chandler bing on the 90s sitcom friends, was found dead at his pacific palisades home in los angeles on saturday. >> preliminary reports from police say there was a call just after 4:00 pm local time for a man in his 50s who was unresponsive. investigators are not saying how perry died, only that they've opened a death investigation. investigate fighters said foul play is not suspected. during friends ten year run, perry's chandler bing quickly became a fan favorite, in part due to the iconic delivery of his lines. >> could i be more sorry? >> but behind all of the laughs, the canadian born actor spent years battling addiction, a battle he tried to keep a secret from everyone, including his fellow cast members on friends. >> secrets kill you, secrets kill people like me. but perry revealed those secrets in a book published in 2022, which he dedicated to others suffering with addiction in a 2020 special, he spoke with diane

on social media has come to an end, and that's less than 24 hours after it started. the department announced today it has temporarily deactivated the instagram and or twitter accounts where people could report auto burglaries. on tuesday, police said the program would run through the weekend. they now tell us it concludes as scheduled and the accounts deactive stated as planned. they also say they're reviewing the effectiveness of the pilot program. anyone who wants to report a car, break-in should call 911. this weekend, women in the fire service are spending the weekend networking, training and collaborating in the east bay. alameda county fire is hosting two nonprofits aimed at helping female firefighters develop their careers because firefighting is a male dominated profession. these events are designed to foster connection and development among women. >> people are coming with all different various skill sets and our goal is to enhance it and just share the knowledge and then share the contacts so women

can stay in touch with the other women that are here participating. >> and another news breast cancer survivors, family supporters and community members walk today to bring an end to breast cancer. and let's take a look at that video right now. this year's making strides walk was held at california's great america in santa clara. the american cancer society has hosted the walk for more than 30 years. breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. the walk raises money and funds research that helps develop life saving programs. what a great event right there. and here's another one. the castro district kicked off its first halloween celebration today. there was no shortage of decorate options and halloween themed fanfare. the ghoulish festivities featured kids games during the day and a block party that goes until midnight. the family focused event is far different than the district's notorious halloween

parties of the past, but that didn't stop the dazzling and creative array of costumes from coming out. it's always fun to see. i was just walking around here by the station and so many people had their costumes on and it was just fun to see. >> it was. i noticed the same thing i was going through north beach earlier and it looked like a spillover from the castro district. you know, i was in these colorful, amazing costumes. yeah, it's a good time of year to be out. >> and, you know, see people in different, different outfits. >> and good people were out today when the wind was light because tomorrow is going to be worse. oh, yeah. the winds are going to get really, really strong overnight. right now, though, karina, we're looking at really calm conditions. basically most wind speeds across the bay area at this moment are under 15mph, except fairfield, where it's getting a little bit gusty. but that's going to change very quickly. wind gust animation shows starting after midnight up until about 5 a.m, we'll see winds gusting from 25 to nearly 40mph. generally across the region, higher gusts and some of the higher elevations, that pattern

continues into tomorrow morning. and then the winds will start to taper off in the afternoon hours tomorrow. and the relative humidity is dangerously low and will get even lower starting at midnight tonight. we're looking at relative humidity between 15 and about 25. it's going to remain in that range until mid-morning tomorrow. then it's going to get even lower. we're talking about single digit humidity readings tomorrow afternoon. so when you combine the strong wind gusts with the dry conditions, that, of course, adds up to high fire danger. but as the winds diminish tomorrow evening, the humidity will begin to increase again. right now, though, we are looking at a red flag warning for high fire danger until 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. that's for virtually all of the bay area. strong wind gusts, low relative humidity under these conditions, any new fires will rapidly grow in size and intensity. and we have a wind advisory also in effect until 5:00 tomorrow afternoon. winds will be generally out of the north northeast at 20 to 30mph with gusts between 45 and 60mph. and of course, the winds

this strong can knock down tree limbs or cause power outages and unsecured objects, of course, may get blown around when we go to what we can do, actions that help during critical fire conditions avoid equipment that produces sparks, keep vehicles off the grass, off dry grass, properly dispose of cigarets matches and of course make sure campfires are completely out okay. let's look at some current conditions. looking out over san francisco from sutro tower is currently 56 degrees here in the city. 49 in oakland, 58. mountain view, 54. san jose mid 40s at palo alto and half moon bay. the view in emeryville calm conditions there. it's 49 degrees right now in santa rosa, 52 novato, napa and fairfield, quite mild at 62 degrees. 50 concord, 59in livermore. and as we look across the embarcadero from the rooftop camera, these are our forecast headlines. high fire danger this weekend. strong gusty winds and very low humidity. strongest wind gusts will occur overnight and in the early morning hours overnight, low temperatures will be mainly in the mid to upper 40s in most

locations tonight except san francisco and oakland, which will have lows of 51 and highs tomorrow. upper 60s at the coast is going to be mild but breezy and highs fr bay to the inland areas will range from low to mid 70s. here's the accuweather seven day forecast. it is going to be seven very mild days ahead. halloween going to be pretty mild. a nice treat with a lovely weather, mainly sunny high temperatures in the mid 70s. inland and near the bay on tuesday. the warmest day will be wednesday midweek with highs near 80 in our warmest inland areas mid to upper 70s around the bay shoreline and upper 60s to near 70 on the coast. so it's a lovely week ahead. we just have to be careful that we get through this next 24 hours without any fires breaking out. >> but after that, things are looking good and halloween looks great for all the kids. >> it does, indeed. >> all right, spencer, thank you. okay, karina. still ahead on abc7 news at 11 purple power. the big event today in the east bay to help raise awareness to fight alzheimer's disease

breathing a sigh of relief after the gunman accused of killing 18 people was found dead from a

self-inflicted gunshot wound. still the tragedy leaves many unanswered questions, including a motive. abc's morgan norwood has new details from lewiston, maine. tonight with the manhunt now over, authorities shifting the focus of their investigation into the motive behind the deadly mass shooting in lewiston, maine. >> it comes after authorities announced late friday they found the body of 40 year old robert card dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> robert card is no longer a threat to anyone. >> police say his body was found near the androscoggin river in lisbon friday night by a recycling center where he used to work. authorities say they had cleared that location twice. >> across the street, there's an overflow parking lot, which is the recycling corporation property. so the owner was very diligent to say, did you clear those trailers? >> investigators say they found a note describing it as a letter to family. >> i wouldn't do describe it as a explicit suicide note, but the

tone and tenor was that the individual was not going to be around. >> the suspect had been at large for more than 48 hours after allegedly going on a shooting rampage at a bowling alley. and a bar, killing 18 people and wounding 14 others. we're now learning more about the victims. the youngest, aaron young, just 14 years old, killed along with his father, bill, at the bowling alley. >> aaron loved table and it was something they did fairly regularly. and just happened to be that night. >> arthur strout, a father of five, also died in that shooting. his own father was with him at the restaurant, but left ten minutes before the gunman walked in and opened fire there with my son playing a couple games of pool just laughing in that ten minutes, he's just gone. an official say they took in more than 820 leads, many of them coming from the suspect's family. they've also opened up a victim services center to provide support for the victims families. morgan

and you got to like use this like this wrench. >> tim showed us around his new job at omron, an electronics company in pleasanton. what do you think about this place? >> i just think it's kind of awesome. >> tim got hired a month ago after excelling as an intern here. getting that call is still a bit surreal for him. >> realizing that i got hired for a full timer, you never thought that was a possibility? >> yeah. why well, because. >> because i thought it would be really impossible since omron is a really busy company. he comes to work knowing that his role is vital to build robots. >> he is part of a team. well it just feels like that i'm starting a new adventure. and what is the adventure bringing you so far? >> well, becoming an adult and also working with others. it just sort of feels like i'm making friends. i mean, with adult friends. >> one of his friends sits right next to him, joseph carter.

>> i do led lights for the top desk. >> joseph is an intern now, but he's inspired by tim's story. do you like your job? >> yes. what do you like about it? >> working with people and friends. the one who saw potential both in tim and joseph, is their mentor. jesse >> i gave him a set of tools. he knew what they were. he knew how to handle it. we just kind of kind of grew on that curiosity. we harnessed it into an adult and career education or pace for short is an adult school within the pleasanton school district that prepares adults with disabilities for the workforce, paying them to intern at different companies. >> in the last five years, about 56 adults with disabilities have learned key skills to find jobs in this community. and this is one of the 25 sites they work with, and we give them three different work experience aces. >> we help them get as many transferable work skills as possible so that they can get a job at the end of the nine month

program that matches what they want to do. >> for example, cole right now is learning to take technical orders, but his dream is a bit different. >> become an executive chef and i own my own restaurant. >> his mentor understands him. >> it feels pretty good. i actually have two stepsons that are both autistic and in their 20s. >> turns out amran is one of the first factories to hire people with disabilities. over 50 years ago, in japan, that factory has more than 50% of the workforce are people with disabilities. and now tim is carrying on that legacy in the us. >> can you believe this? i can't. well believe it. it's happening. i'm so proud of you thanks. this is so cool. in pleasant in luis pena, abc seven news. >> love that. well a mysterious thermal anomaly seen on an unexplored and unexplored volcano may hold the key to helping predict volcanic eruptions around the world.
