a dangerous police chase across the bay bridge and into the east bay and it all starts when a man walks into one of san francisco's most well known churches. good evening. i'm j.r. stone. we are getting new information within the past hour about what happened here. abc7 news just spoke to the pastor of saints, peter and paul church in san francisco right next to washington square park in north beach. he tells us an unknown man was spotted before service and took communion but then allegedly assaulted one of the parishioners after being chased out of the church. san francisco police say they saw the suspect driving away a pursuit. sfpd tells us the man was throwing what they said were, quote, suspicious devices

out of his car as they chased him through san francisco. chp then took over in the chase following him across the bay bridge and ultimately arresting him in martinez. chp says he wasn't throwing anything outside during their portion of the chase, but they say they did find unknown items in his car when they caught up to him. no one was seriously hurt and anyone with info is asked to call san francisco police danger averted in benicia earlier today. strong winds from an earlier red flag warning helped to spread this small ten acre fire on oxford way. crews were able to stop it before it could threaten any structures. another fire in petaluma destroyed three barns at a fertilizer manufacturing business on jewett road. the fire chief says those red flag conditions allowed the fire to jump between structures. let's bring in spencer christian now with those wind concerns. he's tracking that in your 24 hour accuweather forecast spencer. >> all right, j.r. we were

defined by demonstrations here in the bay area rallying for both sides of the intensifying war between israel and hamas. one rally yesterday caught plenty of attention. well over 10,000 demonstrators marched in san francisco filling market street and then at one point blocking traffic on the freeway, all in support of the civilian victims in gaza. tonight, another huge rally for those affected by the terror attacks in israel. abc7 news reporter tara campbell was at today's event attended by jewish leaders from across the bay area from the bay area jewish community banding together in solidarity with the people of israel. >> i want to show my support for israel against the atrocities that were committed against her. >> hundreds gathering in san francisco on sunday demanding the safe return of more than 200 hostages taken by hamas. >> this is my cousin's wife, shiri. she's a hostage. this is

pause supported by the international community, israel has intensified its military operations. >> president biden says he spoke with israel's prime minister today. the white house says biden discussed efforts to free hostages from hamas terrorists and reiterate israel's need to defend itself in a manner consistent with international humanitarian law. now, tonight, governor gavin newsom is on his way back to california after his week long overseas trip in china. today, the governor visiting a tesla factory in shanghai. the goal of newsom's visit was to promote climate friendly initiatives between the two countries. while also gearing up for next month's asia pacific economic cooperation forum in san francisco today, the governor was shown tesla's latest technology and self-driving vehicles at one of the factories. the company's factories that is in shanghai comes less than a week after cruz paused its robo taxi service in san francisco and

nationwide. and the california dmv suspended its driverless permit over allegations the company withheld information on a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian. lien newsom said he supported the dmv decision. new at 11. speaking of tesla, check out what we spotted today in san francisco. yes, it's a cyber truck with a human driver roaming around on van ness and california for the flashy vehicle. had a texas license plate and other videos of cyber trucks in the bay area have been popping up on social media over the past couple of weeks. reports say tesla should be ready to begin production of the cybertruck this year with production expected to ramp up in 2024. turning our attention now to that upsetting loss today at levi's stadium, 49 ers lost their third straight game after they initially won five in a row. abc seven sports anchor chris alvarez is here in studio. chris should we be concerned? i feel like the frustration is

small community remembering the 18 lives taken in wednesday's mass shooting. 18 crosses now stand at the bowling center and restaurant where the shootings took place. tonight abc news reporter morgan norwood has new details about the investigation. >> friends and family gathering to remember those killed in last wednesday's horrific mass shooting at a bowling alley and bar in lewiston, maine. we think of those who lost their lives as we do not want to forget those that are in the hospital right now are still fighting for their lives following a massive manhunt that lasted more than 48 hours. the suspected shooter, 40 year old robert card, found dead friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. 18 people killed, including billy brackett. his father says since the shooting, anger has consumed him. >> just a lot of anger. calm me down a little bit today because i know the guy is gone and he's no longer a threat to anybody. >> among the 13 others injured,

tom giamberti, who was shot at the bowling alley. >> tom was able to get these kids out of the line of fire and ended up getting shot himself. >> abc news has learned the suspect ordered a silencer back in august. it was shipped to the nearest gun dealer. coastal defense. but he had to fill out this 4473, a firearms transaction record form, which asked in part, have you ever been committed to a mental institution to which he checked? yes. that answer under maine's yellow flag laws prevents him from getting the suppressor and said, i'm sorry, mr. card, we cannot give you this because of these reasons. >> and he was very cooperative. and he said, oh, that's a mistake, and i'm sure i can get it clarified. >> during a briefing saturday, officials emphasize mental health is a key focus of their investigation. this in addition to cards possession of firearms and whether his psychiatric history should have barred him from possessing any guns at all.

on saturday, an atf official said the weapons were covered in the investigation and appear to have been purchased legally. morgan norwood, abc news, lewiston, maine. >> now to the new details tonight in the death of the beloved actor from friends, matthew perry. his sudden passing on saturday has left many unanswered questions. hours after the news, perry's stepfather and dateline host keith morrison was seen outside the actor's pacific palisades home. earlier today, the los angeles county coroner completed perry's autopsy report, but it could take weeks to find an exact cause of death once the toxicology reports are completed. perry was found non-responsive in his hot tub last night. all day today, fans of the actor paid tribute outside his house. >> i used to be sad, so my dad used to come up to me and be like, mom, i put friends on for you. friends is on tv for you. >> go, go upstairs. >> because they knew that that was my happy place. so that they

did help me get through my sad moments in life. the show in particular for chandler, he's he leaves a legacy. >> he was also being remembered in new york. perry was 54. happening tomorrow, san francisco street vendors and city officials are set to meet to discuss a possible ban of street sales. the city wants to crack down on those vendors with no permits selling stolen goods along mission street, specifically between cesar chavez and 14th streets. the city's ban would be for 90 days to find another legal and alternative space for street vendors to go. keep in mind this would not affect food vendors. the city's department of public health is in control of that. >> many of the inspectors have to wear bulletproof vests because they've been attacked and harassed. the police there are there to support public works. you know, frankly, we're talking about a one mile stretch of road here after the proposed

henry winkler joins the tam tam. that's coming up this week at 1 p.m. right here on abc seven. welcome back. >> a west oakland bike shop is doing its part to build a better bay area. the shop is hiring those who are formerly incarcerated. this is in an effort to stop the so called playground to prison pipeline line. they sell clothes, give away food, and even give away bikes. abc seven news reporter anser hassan has the story. >> bikes for life in west oakland isn't a traditional bike store. they don't sell bikes. they give them away.

>> we want formerly incarcerated people who are coming home between the clipper card and a bicycle. they should be able to get anywhere in the bay area that they need to go for jobs, for opportunities, service. >> george galvez is the executive director of courage communities united for restorative youth justice. the group also runs the newly opened bike shop, providing opportunities for formerly incarcerated people. >> is critical in terms of reducing recidivism, in terms of promoting public safety and they're the best messengers and mentors as as folks who've been there and done that the shop was inspired by biking advocate and community activist tony coleman, who died last year. >> staying true to his mission. bikes for life also hires those who are formerly incarcerated, like jesus kaba. >> they have all these goals because their time stood still for a little bit, and they want to make sure that when they hit the ground, they hit the ground running. they don't want to stand still. they don't want to be forgotten about. they want to be a part of society, you know, so no one is perfect but an opportunity always helps. and that's what we're here to do.

>> kaba is also one of the designers of the t shirts, symbolic of his latino heritage and san francisco roots. >> i got a shirt that just feels like cultural pride, one that sunkiss, you know, basically brown is beautiful. kiss by the sun. >> as the shop grows, so too will the job opportunities they already launched a food pantry. michael littlebear heads that program called heal or healthy eating, active living. he also runs the bike shop. he also once served time behind bars. >> this program will help them get back on their feet. it will show them dignity and show them that somebody does care out there for them. >> the store is open, but things will really kick off in a few weeks when they will also be open to young people. they can repair or build a bike and take that bike home as well, garvey says. hopefully with some focus on the road ahead, that's part of our model is hiring people who have lived experience, who can support young people, guide them in making life affirming decisions, who are credible messengers, who've overcome the challenge that the young people are being confronted with in oakland on anser hassan, abc seven news. spencer christian

purdy today. now, purdy was in concussion protocol all week, but passed all the tests and was cleared to play yesterday. some though, thought he shouldn't have played regardless of the results. but he did. and the niners eventually dropped their third straight game. purdy threw two interceptions, the first deep in the red zone, they said afterwards, is supposed to be a shovel pass to george kittle. purdy didn't like the look. tried to make a play and was picked by jermaine pratt right there. just an awful pick in a scoring situation. the second purdy says he thought linebacker logan wilson was going to peel away from brandon aiyuk, but he didn't. purdy ultimately threw for 365 yards. but had three turnovers. san francisco enters the bye on a three game losing

streak, giving plenty of time for outside speculation about purdy to mount, but not in the 40 niners locker room. the only thing i'd ask brock to do is, hey, man, try not to throw interceptions. >> i don't know. turnovers are hard. like, i'm not going to put myself back in his shoes and say , oh, i wouldn't have made that throw. we're not in that game without brock, you know, other than obviously a couple of plays, he played really well, but each player has to be equally as hard on themselves as anyone else. >> it's like, man, you know, don't force things and let the game come to you and if it's not there, then try to make something happen. but even when you're trying to make something happen, be smart with it as well. so definitely a fine line to it. and i had to learn the hard way today. >> it was alumni weekend at levi's joe montana, jerry rice and all the friends were in town. longtime offensive lineman joe staley signed an autographs for the faithful. more than 140 niners alums celebrated the team's illustrious great history , especially against cincinnati. remember the niners won super bowl 16 and 23in the 1980s over
