phase of the war. concerns about the humanitarian situation grow. >> this after an anti-semitic incident erupted in russia. an angry mob stormed an airport targeting a plane that arrived from israel. in a moment, we will be joined by top white house national security spokes person john kirby. he'll speak with george. first ian pannell starts us off from israel. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, robin. gaza is one mile in that direction. you can probably see the smoke, the dust rising. we're hearing the regular sound of the booms, the tank, mortar fire, as israeli forces continue what they are calling this expanding ground operation. meanwhile, as you say, israel condemning the anti-semitic attack in russia. overnight, a mob descending on an airport in russia after a flight landed from israel looking for jewish passengers. crowds swarming the plane.

seen in video circulating online, some chanting anti-semitic slogans. others waving palestinian flags. the terrified passengers, including children, trapped for hours as security forces struggled to secure the airport. no one aboard the plane was hurt. in the middle east, israeli forces pushing deeper into gaza, expanding their ground war. palestinian journalists reporting israeli tanks are near gaza city. one reporter filming what appears to be an israeli tank firing towards a car as it tries to turn away. israel releasing this footage they say shows their troops inside the strip. israel isn't calling this an incursion, but sources authenticating this video circulating on line to abc news showing troops raising an israeli flag inside gaza over the weekend. israel's aerial assault on gaza also continuing overnight. palestinians seeing the most intense bombardments this weekend since the war broke out.

thousands breaking into a u.n. aid warehouse desperate for scarce food. >> this is an indication that people in gaza have reached a breaking point. >> reporter: on sunday, more than 38 trucks entering gaza, but humanitarian organization warning it's still far from enough. with little fuel to run generators at hospitals, the wounded have few places to go. the palestinian red crescent saying israeli forces alleging gaza's second largest hospital to evacuate. debris filling the air after explosions nearby. more than 8,000 palestinians now killed according to hamas run local health authorities. israel responding to the massacre of more than 1,400 by hamas and others. there are divisions here, with some demanding the first priority should be rescuing the more than 200 hostages. this is mortar fire. >> yes, into gaza. >> reporter: are you ready to cross in?

>> it's my duty. >> reporter: i spoke to a soldier. the 30-year-old is a peace activist. but after the october 7th attack, he was called up, saying he had no choice but to pick up his rifle. >> it's not easy, but right now i need to be here. our job is to get gaza rid of hamas and then maybe, maybe, we will have a chance of peace in this area. >> reporter: this conflict expanding beyond gaza. in the north, israel releasing video it says shows its forces striking in syria and lebanon, after on going cross border attacks. and overnight, dozens of people arrested in the palestinian controlled west bank. israel saying it's arrested hundreds of terrorists as the violence in this region spreads. israel is still not calling this an incursion, but its troops crossed over that border into gaza friday night. and this morning, three days later, not only are they still there, but they're getting closer to gaza city and sending

more forces in there. this is where the fighting could become particularly difficult. george? >> ian pannell, thank you very much. let's bring in john kirby, spokesman for the white house national security counsel. john, thank you for joining us again. i want to begin with that situation at the airport. what do you make of it? what have you learned about it? is putin handling it correctly? >> it's certainly worrisome to see all that hatred and potential violence against jewish passengers on an airplane. it's absolutely unacceptable. this coming on the heels, george, of mr. putin sitting down with hamas leaders in moscow. these are two entities, russia and hamas, that want to wipe neighboring countries off the map. it's very concerning. i don't know that there was any high level endorsement of that activity, but it's definitely worsened. >> it's not the only anti-semitic incident. we are seeing it all over the world, including here in the united states. how serious a threat is that? >> very serious. we're concerned about it. you're right, george. it's increasing all around the world. certainly, we've seen it

increase here in the united states. last year in 2022 was the highest level recorded since 1979 of anti-semitic events in this country. it's a deep concern. why we as an administration are working so closely with state and local authorities to make sure that we can identify any threats and disrupt them before they happen. >> let's talk about the israeli ground campaign. where does it stand? >> as your reporter just noted, they have moved into northern gaza approaching gaza city. again, we want to be careful we don't speak for their operations or what their intentions are. they are going after hamas leadership, trying to separate out the leadership and to try to go after that. >> the president urged prime minister netanyahu to increase the flow of humanitarian aid yesterday. is that happening? >> we have seen an increase over the weekend of some additional trucks getting in. but, look, it's a trickle. it's not enough. you can see by the reports of people raiding a u.n. warehouse, how desperate they're becoming and how much they need that food, water and medicine. the situation in gaza is perilous.

that's why the president spoke to prime minister netanyahu to make sure that we can continue to accelerate that flow and increase that flow of humanitarian goods. >> how about the president's effort to give pause in the fighting? >> that's something that should be very seriously considered, george. the idea that localized parts gaza strip to be able to stop the fighting long enough to get things in, but also long enough to get people out if they want to get out. that's something that should be considered. >> john kirby, thank you very much. robin? >> we're going to turn to the death of matthew perry. take a look at a memorial here in new york city. it's in front of the building that was the friends apartment building. as his family, friends and fans remember him, an investigation is under way into what happened to the beloved actor. chris connelly is in los angeles with the latest for us. good morning, chris. >> reporter: good morning to you, robin. it's a major loss still being felt throughout the entertainment community and beyond.

matthew perry, as authorities look into the circumstances of his death this past weekend, his remarkable life and years on friends are fondly being remembered. this morning an investigation is under way following the death of matthew perry, as fans mourn the actor best known for the hit tv series "friends." >> requesting two addition units respond to blue trail drive. >> reporter: emergency personnel responding to his pacific palisades home where she was discovered by a witness unresponsive in his jacuzzi. an autopsy has been completed. a subsequent toxicology report could take weeks to complete, with a ruling then forthcoming on how the 54-year-old died. police saying there were no obvious signs of trauma, nor is foul play suspected. just days ago perry posting this photo of himself in his hot tub wearing head phones. tmz reporting witnesses saw perry in good spirits saturday while playing pickleball for two

good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, linsey. there were potentially several red flags leading up to this shooting. over the weekend after two full days of shelter in place order, the heart broken residents were finally able to embrace each other. this morning the people of lewiston, maine, in mourning but finally reunited. ♪ holding multiple heart felt vigils over the weekend after 48 hours sheltering in place, waiting for authorities to find the suspect who killed 18 people. >> one way or another, we all know of or know one of the people that were really affected by this. >> reporter: thousands gathered with hugs, tears and a shoulder to lean on after their tight knit town was torn apart. >> just because something happens to change, it doesn't mean it cannot survive and become better. >> reporter: investigators discovered the body of robert card late friday having died of an apparent gun shot wound. we're now learning more about the warning signs and possible missed red flags that led up to

the massacre. last month a maine sheriff reportedly sent an alert to all law enforcement agencies in the state after sources say the suspect threatened an army reserve center. overnight the lewiston police chief telling abc news, it received notice. >> this just came to my knowledge today, that there was supposedly some reports made. it is concerning to me. >> reporter: in lewiston city council president and gun shopowner said in august the alleged shooter was turned away from buying a silencer for a rifle after he checked yes on his application when asked whether he'd been committed to a mental institution. >> we did what we're supposed to do and hopefully saved a lot of lives. >> reporter: and while he was denied that silencer, authorities say there's no evidence the suspect was forcibly admitted to a mental institution it wouldn't have come up on a background check or prevented him from buying weapons. george? >> trevor ault, thanks. latest now on donald trump.

he's back to a gag order in his case. it's designed to prevent him from publicly attacking witnesses, court staff, special counsel. aaron katersky has the latest. >> reporter: george, good morning. after a brief reprieve the limited gag order is back in effect after a federal judge in washington said trump attacked a witness in the election tampering case. the judge paused the gag order while trump appeals it but he instated it after he threatened mark meadows. trump suggesting on social media meadows was a weakling and coward after he testified before the grand jury in exchange for a form of immunity. overnight the former president taking to social media, calling the ruling not constitutional. the judge said first amendment rights may be curtailed to preclude statements that pose sufficiently grave threats to the integrity of judicial proceedings. it is not the only court order limiting what trump can say. his lawyers just paid $15,000 after the judge in trump's civil fraud trial here in new york fined him for disparaging his law clerk. later this week trump's three

addictions he suffered through brought a new focus to his life as he told diane sawyer. >> for some reason, it's obviously because i was on "friends." more people will listen to me. so i have got to take advantage of that. i have got to help as many people as i can. >> reporter: he did it in part by sharing his story with the world in his memoir "friends, lovers and the big terrible phase." telling george stephanopoulos about a years long dependency on alcohol. >> i had to keep it a secret. i didn't know what was going on. i thought i was alone in this. my thinking was very weird and i thought i was alone. then i read a passage in the big book of alcoholics anonymous that said drinkers think they're trying to escape, but really what they're trying to do is get over an illness that they don't know they have. and i read that and went, oh, there's 30 million people in the family. >> reporter: before season 3, a jet ski mishap led a doctor to prescribe him vicodin.

it would later escalate into full blown addiction. >> 55 vicodin a day is where i was. >> 55? >> yeah. >> reporter: i think if i had never taken it, perry writes later, none of the next three decades would have gone the way they did. instead -- >> wait a minute. i know that hat. i was taken aboard that hat. [ laughter ] they did experiments on me. i can't have children. very hard to watch that. because in this weird way i feel so sorry for that guy. that's a guy that's out of control. i didn't know what was going on with me. i weighed 155 pounds, on my way to 128 pounds. >> reporter: he'd find himself

deep in the throes of ravaging addiction, pain and anguish, days and nights clinging to life in the hospital, multiple surgeries, countless months in rehab. 65 detoxes. >> detox is hell. there is a hell. i know it. it has tangible features. i can describe it. i would make a decision to have like five, six hours of being high and knowing that six days of that was coming. i would make that decision over and over and over again. >> reporter: and yet amid it all, he never gave up. others stood by him as well, including the cast of "friends." >> they said, what are you doing? why are you acting this way? what's going on? we know there's a problem with you. i said, i'm on medication. i'm really sorry. it won't happen again. >> reporter: in nature when a penguin is injured, the other

ended from israel looking for jewish passengers. crowds swarming the plane, seen in video circulating online. some chanting anti-semitic slogans, others waving palestinian flags. the terrified passengers, including children, trapped for hours, as security forces struggled to secure the airport. no one aboard the plane was hurt, and in the middle east this morning, israeli forces pushing deeper into gaza, expanding their ground war. israeli tanks are now near gaza city. one reporter filming what appears to be an israeli tank firing towards a car as it tries to turn away. israel releasing this footage they say shows their troops inside the strip. israel isn't calling this an incursion, but sources authenticating this video circulating online to abc news showing troops raising an israeli flag inside gaza over the weekend. israel's aerial assault on gaza also continuing overnight.

palestinians seeing the most intense bombardment this weekend since the war broke out. thousands of gazans breaking into a u.n. aid warehouse, desperate for scarce food. on sunday, more than 38 trucks entering gaza but humanitarian organization warning it's far from enough. with little fuel to run generators at hospitals, the wounded have fewer places to go. the airport in russia has now reopened. the fighting isn't just going on here in gaza, israel targets in syria and lebanon, also in the west bank amid more signs this conflict is really starting to agitate around israel's borders. george? >> ian, thank you very much. robin? sweeping new presidential order on artificial intelligence, setting national rules on the rapidly growing technology that has big potential but also comes with risks. our senior white house correspondent selina wang has details for us.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the white house is calling this the strongest action any government has taken on artificial intelligence safety and security. today the president is signing an executive order that would require developers working on the most powerful ai models to share their safety test results with the government before releasing to the public. it also includes developing standards for ethically using ai and for labeling content. this is just the start to a path way of many dangers of ai as it rapidly advances. the technology threatens jobs by replacing human tasks, and makes it far easier to spread misinformation and steal people's data. the white house is also urging congress to do more and to pass bipartisan privacy legislation. the white house also making it clear this isn't just america's problem. the u.s. needs to work with the world to set these standards. linsey? >> thanks so much. two major warnings from the fda. one about baby food pouchs. the other about potentially

contaminated eye drops. arielle reshef is here with what you need to hear. >> reporter: this is a sweeping warning to stop using two dozen over the counter eye drop product for the potential of eye infection that could lead to vision loss. the recall alert affects 26 products from rite aid, cvs, leader rugby, target and velocity pharma. this comes after contamination in drug production areas of a facility, a manufacturing facility. according to the agency so far, cvs, rite aid and target are removing those products from store shelves and online. at this point no reports of cases of infection, but the fda said if you do see products at the stores, do not purchase them. if you have them at them, discard them immediately linsey. >> you're also following a separate fda warning about a kid's food parents need to know about. >> reporter: the fda is advising parents not to buy or give wana bana apple cinnamon fruit pouchs

i feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared, robin. >> thanks for bringing it to us. always good to open up the gma vault. we are so blessed to have people here. >> he's been a friend for many, many years. saving for college and paying for retirement are some of the biggest expenses people will ever face. rebecca jarvis back to break it down. >> this is all about the fafsa. these are the forms you fill out to determine how much financial aid you get. need based financial aid. i remember filling them out with my own family. lot of consternation here. the way it works, they take the total cost of attendance and subtract your family contribution from that. that equals the financial aid you need. until now it used to work like this. that family contribution included things like your income, but it also included

things like your pretax contributions to your 401k. it made it look like your family could afford more college. now they are not going to do that. you can contribute to your 401k. it will not make it look like your family contributions are higher and, as a result, you'll be entitled to more financial aid. >> how much are we talking about? >> it's a significant number for some families. anywhere between $5,000 to $10,000 additional for families per year. if you look at it for a family, for example, making about $100,000 a year, you could imagine that that pretax 401k contribution is $22,500. under the old fafsa parent contribution, you would have to contribute about $9,400 to the education. under the new parent contribution rule, you could be contributing $8,000. that's more than $1,500 difference that a family no longer owes because of those contributions. >> which families will benefit most?

[ laughter ] where are you, you know? >> the fonz was such a huge character. did you ever feel trapped by him >> i never felt trapped by him. i understood that i thought i could beat the odds of type casting. and you can't. when i met my wife, she had a 4-year-old son. i was the candle on his cake

also knew i couldn't say no because it was such an important moment in history and looking back it would have been tough to have said no. >> one of the things i have puzzled over for the last several years now is why so few of your republican colleagues joined you in this, given what they knew about president trump when he was running for president, what they've learned since. >> i can't figure it out either. literally every day almost i still think about, i assumed everybody hadz a red line. you know, you can always play around the edges in politics. sometimes you have to be a little mallable on certain issues for your party. but this is a red line. this is like the definition of what you take an oath for. so for me, i still can't come to grips with why, except i have come to believe that people fear more than they fear death, they fear being kicked out of the tribe. frankly, they fear having to take a stand that may lead to being kicked out of the tribe. that's the only thing i can figure. also cost. why didn't we leave vietnam after we lost 10,000 men? because we already lost 10,000 men. if you have given so much to donald trump, to turn on him,

you have to admit everything you did was wrong. >> he seems to be strengthsening his hold over many of your former colleague misthe how who saw the election on the fourth try of a house speaker, mike johnson. it appeared at the very end that donald trump was the king maker. >> he still is. again, when he gets indicted, for instance, the base will look to him for his reaction. then they'll look to all these people running for president. what do they think about it? kind of a second tier influencers. when every one says this is a witch hunt, donald trump is a great man, how do you expect them to come to any other conclusion? it's this fear. when you lead you have to be a leader. >> in your view what does it mean for your party and, more importantly, the country? >> the country needs two healthy parties. right now i think it only has one healthy party. i think the republican party has gone off the rails. i don't really know what it believes anymore, what it stands for. they are opposing, for the most part, aid to ukraine. we used to be hawkish against

russia. obviously spending is not a big issue. the republican party i think has lost its soul and basically sold out to one man. they have got to come to grips with that. >> people may not know but book has a fairly long lead time. you probably finished this several weeks or even months ago. at the time you wrote the fever is breaking, the donald trump fever is breaking in the republican party. do you believe that? >> i think there's small signs of it. there was opposition to jim jordan, which impressed me. i thought jim jordan would come in on a wash because they would pressure him. it's a long way to go. the republican party is probably going to lose a few more elections to wake up. >> we only have about 30 seconds left. what's at stake right now and what do you hope people get out of your book? >> my book, it's my story, but tells the broader story of what's happened to the party and country. democracy is at stake. i think the election coming up, there's only one thing we should vote on. do you believe in democracy or do you not? whatever that means to you, vote that way. but it is that serious. i believe that. >> adam, thanks for coming in.
