discovery. a suitcase with a body stuffed inside was found floating this morning on halloween of all days. good evening. i'm dan ashley. thanks for joining us. how that body in a suitcase and who put it there has the full attention tonight of oakland. homicide detectives. it was initially spotted just before 11 a.m. on the eastern side of the lake. that's right by pine knoll park on hanover. abc seven news reporter tim johns is following the new clues tonight. a gruesome discovery near the shores of lake merritt around 11 a.m. tuesday morning, cleaning crews discovered a large suitcase floating in the water inside that suitcase was a

human body. >> kevin shomo was part of the cleaning crew. >> i thought it was a dummy, you know, like one of the human dummies. it looked like, you know, look like a human flesh. and then we opened it up further and realized the oakland police department is withholding the identity of the body for the time being. >> they tell abc7 news they're investigating how and when the person died. part of investigations is trying to determine where the body was was could have floated from as well. >> so it could be any part of the lake. well the suitcase incident has gotten a lot of attention. >> many of the oakland residents we talked to say this is just another example of why they feel increasingly unsafe in their own city, that includes zoe siegel. siegel says while she knows crime in oakland has risen in recent years, this is especially disturbing. >> this type of crime does seem uncharacteristic for the type of crime that has been happening in oakland. >> although bothersome, siegel says this isn't the first time she's heard of a body in the lake. >> i rowed crew on lake merritt in high school and back then we

turn quickly now to your wednesday weather. abc7 news weather anchor spencer christian is here with your 24 hour accuweather forecast. >> spencer all right dan november will start off with a little bit of a chilly note in the early morning hours we'll have mainly clear skies. a few wispy high clouds around but temperatures will be in the mid to upper 40s from bay to inland. but then as you look at the noon hour, sunny and mild, 70 degrees inland, 70 degrees around the bay and almost 70 on the coast. by 12 noon tomorrow, going into the afternoon hours, 4:00, mainly sunny, even milder, upper 70s to near 80, inland, mid to upper 70s around the bay, 70 degrees on the coast. and then after sunset, 7 p.m, skies will be mainly clear. a few high clouds still lingering. it'll be mild from the bay to the inland areas mid 60s. but only about 60 degrees on the coast. a lovely day ahead. >> dan yeah, it looks like it. spencer, thanks very much. we'll touch base a little later. let's move overseas now, developing news from the middle east where dozens are feared dead after an airstrike hit the largest

refugee camp in gaza. the israeli military has taken responsibility for the strike, which it says took out a top hamas leader who was accused of planning the october 7th attack in israel. israeli forces on the ground in gaza are said to be deep inside the strip now taking out terrorists in close range combat. meanwhile, relief workers say the humanitarian crisis is worsening. aid that is arriving into gaza is said to be not nearly enough to meet the growing need. and now the director of the fbi is warning the war in the middle east could inspire other extremists to carry out attacks against americans. it's all happening against a backdrop of anti semitic and anti-muslim hate happening here at home. tonight reporter mike valerio is tracking a disturbing trend. >> a string of alarming hate incidents and a climate of fear emerging in america. a virginia survivor of the holocaust stunned. >> we said never again. it means

never again. and we see it happening again. >> anti-semitic threats, vandalism and outbursts across the us are now being reported. the fbi director and secretary of homeland security both described new threats to the homeland since the latest war between hamas and israel began. >> in the days and weeks since we have responded to an increase in threats against jewish, muslim and arab american communities and institutions across our country. >> the nation's largest muslim civil rights group, cair, reports a three fold increase in complaints about anti-muslim violence, as fbi director chris wray warned the tense environment could lead to attacks at home. >> here in the united states, our most immediate concern is that violent extremists, individuals or small groups will draw inspiration from the events in the middle east to carry out attacks against americans going about their daily lives at cornell university, one person is in custody after online posts encouraged people to kill jews and attack a dining hall for jewish students.

surge in jail numbers and getting downtown oakland ready for the holidays. it's tonight's abc7 news to know at 11 improving safety and attracting more shoppers to downtown oakland. the city is working on both with something called five after five just a flat $5 fee to park in the franklin plaza garage after 5 p.m. and all day on weekends. oakland is also working to connect businesses to a citywide camera network to cut down on crime during the holiday season. president biden will meet with china's president xi jinping in san francisco during next month's asia pacific economic cooperation summit, or apec. the white house only saying the two are expected to have a tough conversation with intense diplomacy. the two last met in november of last year. those corners is always there for have you noticed, a decrease ? >> yes, there is decrease, but

jordan van der sloot arrived back in the country to serve prison sentence for another murder that happened in 2000. ten. he was temporarily extradited to america to face fraud and wire charges. the 36 year old tried seeking a quarter million dollars to tell holloway's family the location of her remains. his extortion charges will run simultaneously with his prison time in peru. we're learning about another potential scare in the cockpit of a commercial flight. a pilot from california has been indicted by a grand jury in utah, accused used of threatening to shoot his copilot. now, this happened during a flight in august of 2022. a passenger had a medical emergency on board and the suspect, jonathan dunn, threatened to shoot the captain if he diverted the flight. feds did not say which airline or flight this happened on, but dunn was authorized to carry a firearm on board under a tsa program. king charles and queen camilla in nairobi for a state visit today. apologize for

puts this wildfire technology on the cutting edge. >> this wildfire detection tool uses artificial intelligence and a vast network of cameras to spot fires when they first ignite, giving first responders more lead time and providing decision makers with more information when working in ongoing fire. the tool was developed as a collaboration between the university of california alert california program. cal fire and industry partner digital path. for years, developers have been gathering data and training a computer program to recognize fire starts and then report them. this video shows an example of the kind of resolution that developers are working with. >> you have situational awareness. you can look at the color of the fire. you can look if it's bent over how fast is it growing? all of this is data feed into driving the decision of the dispatcher. >> cal fire has been using the tool in its decision making this year. >> we're seeing that it's beating 9-1-1 and reporter from passer bys. et cetera. 20% of

we're smashing record lows in tulsa, three degrees below the previous record low, most likely this wednesday morning. oklahoma city should break a record low. midland. odessa, texas, 28 degrees. that's a record low there as well. and we're dealing with a burst of snow for some in the interior here. but for areas like new york city to connecticut to boston, rain showers at times we had a burst of snow last night in toledo, ohio. that was pretty significant. and then we're going to turn quieter, but still cold. in fact, the coldest night for the mid-atlantic states will be wednesday night to thursday morning with more record challenging cold lynchburg, virginia, and trenton should break record lows out there. but there's good news here. we're going to warm back up friday through sunday. andrew and rhiannon, back to you. >> all right, jeff, thank you for that. the old adage, you
