we have a vast amount of evidence to work with. he is facing life in prison. >> he's accused of a crime spree stretching across the bay area, hitting a church goer and chucking explosives at police. and tonight, we have a new update on the case. good evening. thank you for joining us. i'm dan ashley. that man is due back in court tomorrow. but today he pleaded not guilty to a dozen different charges in a san francisco courtroom. abc seven news reporter tim johns has more on the potential penalties he's facing and what comes next. >> 42 year old daniel garcia was stoic in court wednesday as he was arraigned on a dozen different charges. >> we do not ordinarily see someone attempt to detonate explosive devices around our

very, very dense city. garcia is accused of assaulting and attempting to rob someone at saints peter and paul church sunday night after police arrived. >> they say garcia fled the area by car car. in the ensuing chase, garcia is alleged to have thrown multiple explosive devices out of his car window at officers. he was finally taken into custody in the east bay city of martinez. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says some of the charges her office has filed include a count of second degree attempted murder as well as six counts of detonating an explosive device with intent to commit murder. >> i believe we have a strong case here. we have a vast amount of evidence to work with. he is facing life in prison. >> garcia pleaded not guilty to all of the charges in court wednesday. >> never have i had a case where the facts didn't turn out differently than we initially. we received. >> garcia is also currently dealing with other pending criminal matters, including a domestic violence case. besides that, garcia was found guilty

back in 2012 for detonating a bomb under the car of one of his then tenants. legal experts say this time around, garcia's pass could weigh on any potential sentencing if the person is found guilty. >> when it comes time for sentencing, then the judge is going to consider a range of factors in there. someone's criminal history can make the punishment more severe. >> garcia is scheduled to appear in court again on thursday to set a preliminary hearing date. district attorney brooke jenkins says she plans on keeping garcia in custody due to the threat he poses to public safety. >> we are absolutely fortunate as a city that the police officers weren't hurt who this very well could have had grave impact to and that it didn't spill over and harm any other innocent civilians in the area. >> in san francisco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> so someone sprayed bear mace inside an east bay hobby lobby and police think he did it on purpose. nearly 70 people were exposed inside the store in

antioch about 3:00 today. at least two people had to go to the hospital to get checked out. police say the man had been asked to leave the store right before he deployed the spray. some people experienced skin irritation, watery eyes and trouble breathing. the store on lone tree way opened back up after being decontaminated. three people had to be rescued from the water just before sunrise. after a major fire engulfed three boats at oyster point marina in south san francisco. investigators are still trying to figure out what caused that fire. witnesses say there was a lot of yelling and one person rescued could not swim boat, residence, had to jump into the water, abandoning their homes in a hurry. a woman who works nearby was out for her morning walk and she says she saw the flames reach 20ft into the air. >> you just hope they were okay. they know the folks that live in these boats. there are several of them, and they're part of the community. they dock their boats and they come out and frequent the establishments.

with israel and hamas. us president biden calling for a humanitarian cease fire in the war. a pause. he issued that call while speaking at a fundraiser in minneapolis today. the president, it was interrupted by a protester calling for a cease fire in gaza . the president responded saying he supports a pause to allow for the release of hostages. it comes as hundreds of civilians were allowed to exit through a border with egypt today, including a handful of americans . >> we're in a situation where safe passage for wounded palestinians and foreign nationals to exit gaza has started and israel has confirmed a second strike on a densely populated refugee camp. >> israeli defense forces say one of those strikes killed the hamas member who planned the october 7th attack in israel that killed more than 1400 people and took hundreds hostage . the gaza health ministry says the overall death toll there is now nearing 9000 people, all sadly, many of them children.

well, in exactly ten days, san francisco will become the epicenter of the asia pacific region. thousands of foreign dignitaries, entrepreneurs and journalists will make their way into town for the apec 2023 summit. it is setting a big expectation as a host city with a shot at being a huge economic boost as well. and tonight, as we take a live look from the tarmac of sfo, we're seeing something happen there that hasn't occurred since before the pandemic started. direct flights began arriving from mainland china today, the first since march of 2020. china hopes to double its us flight schedule by the end of this year to reestablish those close ties with san francisco's chinese community. >> people are not 100% out of the pandemic unless we are able to travel conveniently and freely, just like before the pandemic and what he's referring to is before the pandemic one third of the visitors to china

came from chinatown, rather came from china. >> the air china also promises to drop ticket prices to mainland china. that will help. and as we've reported, president biden will also sit for a high stakes meeting with chinese president xi jinping in san francisco. governor newsom met with him in china last week, the first sit down with an american governor since 2017. all right. now to an interesting idea from the mayor of san jose. a score card to track the city's progress as mayor, matt mehan unveiled the scorecard concept during a city council meeting last night. here's how it's going to work. the city will survey a new group of 800 residents each quarter to add information to the scorecard by the end of the year. city officials hope to have 3000 residents surveyed, much like report cards. the system will focus on several key subjects and the city's progress. this includes community safety, reducing the number of homeless neighborhood cleanups and attracting jobs and housing.

mayor mehan says the plan will be used to track other city programs in the future. >> i just think we need to do our best to make the scorecard level b really easily. digest able for the public. >> mayor mehan says realists san jose is not going to be 100% perfect, of course, but his goal is to get the city in a much better place. so we'll track this idea and see how it works. with halloween over. it's on now to the winter holidays. san francisco's only outdoor ice rink is back open tonight. abc seven news reporter j.r stone laced up his skates to show you what's different this year. the season for a little ice skating in union square. >> even if it is only november 1st. yesterday there was cobwebs in the windows of macy's. >> today there's christmas trees. >> is it christmas time already? it's after halloween.

happening. well, building a better bay area area is something not done overnight. obviously, it starts going from neighbor to neighbor, one small idea at a time. sometimes and we're finding one of those breakthroughs tonight in the south bay. abc seven news south bay reporter lauren martinez has the story. >> those lyrics are amazing. >> college of adaptive arts in saratoga provides a higher education for adults with special needs. >> it's exploding. it's exploding. when we started in 2009, we had 12 adults a car now has 224 students enrolled there located at the west valley community college campus. >> staff at this one of a kind learning center are happy to hear santa clara county is building a new advisory group comprised of those within in the disabled community. >> we have so many people we could refer. many of our staff members are individuals with disabilities, executive director deanna purcell said housing, employment and public transportation are huge issues

for her students. >> the bus. zachary crumbine is a student and it takes him an hour to get from campbell to saratoga. >> what is your song about seven years ago, sharon lee started as a volunteer but is now the director of music. it's okay. you brainstorm an idea, lee said . >> the effort to create a community board that will focus on disability issues and include adults with disabilities is a long time coming. >> i think in society we we're a very visual people. so if somebody looks like they have down's or someone looks, they have tourette's, they have anything different, people go like this. >> the county says individuals who are deaf, blind, physically disabled or intellectually disabled, as well as caregivers, parents and community based organization workers, can sign up to be a part of this new county committee. we as a society need to up our game and take that time. >> listen, because if you take that moment to listen to these students are these these individuals are going to

contribute so much to society. >> the county says those interested in serving the panel can sign up at the office of disability affairs website until december fourth. >> give her a good job. that's excellent. >> in the south bay. lauren martinez, abc seven news. excellent >> our final abc seven building a better bay area breakthrough is a really big one. a large donation brings oakland community leaders one step closer to a collective initiative. an anonymous person donated $10 million to rise east. the money will go toward improving a 40 by 40 block area in east oakland in the hope of keeping and bringing back african american families, many who of whom have been displaced. improvements include black led nonprofits, a black cultural zone and a youth development center. organizers need to raise $50 million by the end of the year to start this project. the 40 blocks make up oakland's largest concentration of black residents. all right. well, halloween is over, but we all

want to know what to do with all those leftover pumpkins. vineyard manager shares ways to reuse your pumpkins as we enter the holiday season. john thull from minnesota suggests taking your pumpkins to a local farm. well, he says he takes his leftover crop to the local zoo, which isn't an option, obviously, for everyone on regular pumpkins can be also good source of food for animals, including squirrels, birds, deer. they love them. any one interested? one interesting way rather to convert your gourds is to make a birdhouse after it's been used. >> decoratively. in the fall, you could take this guy hollow out a little hole in there and let the birds actually make a nest inside. >> that's a really great idea. if none of these options work, you can always leave them to compost in your garden. it's the most effective repurposing of pumpkins. easy to do, and it does work. all right. well, halloween is over. november is here. we're sort of starting to

think about thanksgiving. meteorologist sandhya patel is here with the forecast as we start a new month. yeah, absolutely. >> and dan, it hasn't been feeling like november for but this weekend and early next week it will we're going to get a reality check. but before we get to that, let's check out your temperature. is the highs for today got up into the low 80s from santa cruz to san jose to cloverdale, well above average, 75 in oakland, 76 in concord, livermore and napa, you were close to 80 degrees, 74 in santa rosa and half moon bay. so unseasonable warm for the start of a new month. but that is going to change 40s and 50s on your numbers right now. here is what is happening on live doppler seven. an atmospheric river is aimed right at the pacific northwest. they are going to get quite a soaking over the next several days as a series of systems continues to move through. and we here in the bay area will have an opportunity for some rain as we head towards the weekend. right now on live doppler seven, just some passing high clouds as we

look at a live view from our emeryville camera. it's a lovely one looking back toward san francisco. high clouds overnight, mild tomorrow afternoon. cooler this weekend with a chance of some rain and it remains unsettled. going into early next week. so this first system is going to bring us a lot more cloud cover tomorrow. but certainly the opportunity for a few sprinkles right around mendocino county tomorrow night for us here in the bay area, we're going to start to notice those high temperatures backing off a few degrees tomorrow. and then really over the weekend is when you'll really notice the drop in the temperatures as onshore winds pick up tomorrow morning. 40s 50s not terribly cold. some of the wind sheltered valleys may drop down to the upper 30s tomorrow afternoon. it's another mild one, but a lot of high cloudiness will mean filtered sunshine. upper 60s to the upper 70s for most of you for your thursday. now i want to show you what's going to happen tomorrow night. that front doesn't really make it here. saturday night pacific northwest still getting soaked. northern california is getting that heavy

rain as well for the bay area saturday night. best chances in the north bay. then sunday, this computer model wants to bring in some energy sunday evening, which would bring us an opportunity for some wet weather. and then this really continues off and on through early next week. that's one computer model. all the computer models are not in agreement. but if we go with this one, here are the rainfall projections for the weekend. it's not a washout. a couple hundredths of an inch to about a quarter of an inch of rain. and for the walk to end alzheimer's in san francisco, it will be dry reggie aqui will be hosting this event here in the city, upper 50s. when the walk begins, it'll be in the low 60s pretty comfortable whether 1:00 we're looking at mid 60s accuweather seven day forecast filtered sunshine tomorrow. it's a mild afternoon for your friday best chance of rain will be saturday night in the north bay. better opportunity sunday for the bay area with a level one. and don't forget sunday daylight saving time ends so you want to fall back one hour. but notice those temperatures going down into the 60s with more opportune
