half the country waking up to record low temperatures in the 20s and 30s. ginger has more for us on that early winter blast coming up. we begin in the middle east. several hundred people including 400 americans being allowed to leave gaza via a border crossing with egypt for the first time since the war began. >> all this as israel expands its ground operations. president biden is saying he thinks a pause is needed for what he says could give more time to get the more than 200 civilian hostages taken by hamas out of gaza. our chief foreign correspondent ian pannell is on the scene for us in israel. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning again, robin. we're just outside the border with gaza. very active battle scene under way at the moment. fighter jets. we're hearing tank fire, artillery going in, smoke rising in the distance. the situation for many people on the ground continues to be very difficult and very dangerous. but as you say, news for a few people that they can finally escape gaza at last.

this morning the exodus into egypt. around 400 americans gathering at the rafah border crossing. 7,000 foreign nationals expected to be able to finally escape from gaza after weeks of war and waiting. our team filming as people desperately search for their names on an approved list posted each morning, hoping their nightmare will soon end. this morning lena from utah at the crossing. we've been following her and her family for weeks. she sent us this video just hours ago. >> we are at the palestinian side of the border. let's just hope we can make it through today. there's a lot of people here. >> reporter: overnight two american doctors were among the first to leave. ramona and barbara. >> people are frustrated. they're desperate. they get angry. there were a couple fist fights right by the door. people just trying to get through. >> reporter: this 71-year-old lives in seattle. she was volunteering with the

palestine children's relief fund making prosthetics for injured kids when she got trapped. ramona's family calling her escape a great relief. >> the bombs were falling four, five times a night she would wake up with the building shaking. pretty scary. she'll be grateful to be home, but she'll remind us all that people are never going to come home. >> reporter: doctors in gaza hoping some are allowed to leave, more aid will be allowed in, with hospitals on the brink, pleading for fuel, more medical team, even blood. the death toll in gaza rising again. more than 8,700 killed according to the gaza health ministry run by hamas. israel responding to the october 7th massacre where at least 1,400 were killed. israeli forces pushing ever deeper into gaza, releasing new video overnight they say shows their forces on the ground, claiming they've confronted several terrorist cells and killed dozens. the aerial bombing relentls.

as israel confirms it struck the same refugee camp in gaza again, after tuesday's devastating blast that killed at least 52, according to the hamas run local authorities. the idf saying it was a hamas stronghold. but hamas still fighting back, releasing this video, saying it shows a bomb being dropped on israeli soldiers in the northeast of the gaza strip. israeli soldiers fleeing. others dropping to the ground. and hamas still launching rockets. we saw israel's iron dome air defense first hand. sound of the incident overhead. you can hear the recoil. every single day, multiple times a day, not just here in central israel, but elsewhere, those rockets are coming over from gaza and israel is trying to stop them hitting cities and civilian populations.

and overnight, president biden calling for a humanitarian pause in gaza after being interrupted by a heckler at a campaign event, saying a pause would give time to get the more than 200 hostages taken by hamas out. escape for the few, but no relief for the many. more than 2 million palestinians will not be allowed to cross out into egypt, and they are confined inside gaza with where few places to go. remember the more than 240 hostages, including americans. again, no word on those negotiation, but we do understand that they're there. clearly pressure now on israel from america and other allies for this humanitarian pause. for now, there's no sign those guns are gonna fall silent. rebecca? >> ian, thank you for your reporting. we turn to a record breaking blast of cold air sweeping across the country. millions under freeze alerts this morning and ginger is tracking it all for us. good morning, ginger. glad you have your coat on. >> good morning.

rebecca, yes, we are here in our first freeze in the city, in the tri state. this is not where the records are happening. it is in the deep south. let's talk about the snow, up to 10 inches in parts of pennsylvania. on interstate 80, that pileup had the i 80 closed for about ten hours and was fatal. up to 7 inches in parts of new york. the picture from oswego. yes, there were some snow squalls. it's far into new england. it's more about the deep cold and those freeze alerts that included some of those record lows yesterday morning. kansas city, missouri, 18. macon georgia fell below the freezing mark. eventually here we will warm it up. for now, back to you, george. >> we'll go to washington where congressman george santos who faces criminal charges survived a vote last night to expel him from the house. senior congressional correspondent

rachel scott reports from capitol hill. good morning, rachel. >> reporter: george, good morning. it was new york republicans that made the case that congressman george santos deserves to be kicked out of office. but with his trial still months away, some said it was premature. overnight congressman george santos surviving a rare vote to oust him from congress. >> the resolution is not adopted and a motion to reconsider is laid upon the table. >> reporter: 24 republicans joining most democrats to expel santos, but the resolution falling far short of the two-thirds majority needed to pass. santos defiant. >> i feel like due process is still alive. i feel like there's enough colleagues on both sides of the aisle here who understand that. >> reporter: the push to expel santos was put forward by his fellow new york republicans, pointing to his lies about his background, from education and work experience, to religion and family history. he even falsely claimed his mother was in the 9/11 attacks. >> the number of first responders who still to today are dying from 9/11 related

illnesses. this is not something you joke about, you lie about! it is unfit. >> reporter: santos is facing 23 federal charges, accused of engaging in multiple criminal scheme, from unemployment fraud to lying to federal officials about his campaign finances. he denies it all. >> why do you deserve to stay in office? >> because it's not up to them. it's up to the people who vote. >> reporter: prosecutors allege santos falsely donated his campaign half million dollars when he only had $8,000 in the bank and accused him of stealing the personal identities of some donors and charging their credit cards repeatedly to fund his campaign. but even lawmakers who find all that concerning warn expelling him before his trial would send a dangerous precedent. is there a situation where you would resign? >> no. >> reporter: at all? >> nope. i already told you that before, rachel. i have been telling you that for ten months. >> reporter: republicans were also keeping in mind their razor thin majority.

they did not want to lose an additional vote. even though this failed, those new york republicans could still try to bring to it the floor again. house ethics committee expected to provide an update on their investigation in the coming weeks. >> rachel, overin the senate, republican on republican battle over this hold senator tommy tuberville put on military appointees. >> reporter: this was a remarkable intense fight that played out on the senate floor. 61 military nominations brought to the floor and 61 were blocked, one by one, by one single senator, tommy tuberville. he has remained dug in for months taking issue with the pentagon's abortion policy. he was confronted on the floor by his senate republican colleagues who argued that that has nothing to do with any of this. they insist with one more raging in israel, another raging in ukraine, tuberville is handing our adversaries like putin a gift, george. >> okay, rachel. thanks. we have the latest on donald trump's civil fraud trial. donald trump jr. set to take the stand for a second day of testimony in the $250 million case brought by new york's attorney general.

senior investigative correspondent aaron katersky is at the courthouse in lower manhattan. good morning, aaron. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. for a time, donald trump jr. and his brother were in charge of the trump organization, the family real estate business. but already he has said he has no specific knowledge about the financial documents at the center of the case. this morning former president trump's eldest son, don jr., returns to the witness stand where he has tried to distance himself from financial statements that the judge has already determined fraudulently inflated his father's net worth by as much as $2 billion. trump jr. signed those documents but told the judge he didn't work on them. the accountants worked on them. that's what we pay them to do, he testified. i have an obligation to listen to those who are expert, who have an expertise of these things. it echoed what trump jr. said in a sworn deposition. >> do you have any understanding of how the statement of financial condition is compiled each year? >> i really have had almost no involvement in it. >> okay. >> reporter: like his brother,

eric trump, denied working on the statements that inflated his father's worth. >> i have done a lot to try and jog my memory and i simply can't because i don't think i have ever had any involvement, to the best of my knowledge. >> reporter: eric trump will also face questions about seven springs in westchester county with an apraised value of $30 million. new york attorney general james said trump's financial statements value the property at almost ten times that much, $291 million citing a conversation with eric trump. the judge has also ordered ivanka trump to testify here, but, george, she is now appealing that order. >> the judge is also going to have at the end of the trial the ability to impose penalties. what is this all going to mean potentially for trump, his family, the trump organization? >> reporter: the trumps could have to pay $250 million. they could lose control of the buildings that bear their name. but if any of that seemed to

bother don trump jr., it didn't show on the witness stand. he appeared at ease. at one point the judge asked him to speak slower an he simply replied, i moved to florida but kept the new york pace. george? >> aaron katersky, thanks. rebecca? we turn now to the latest strike to hit our country. teachers in portland oregon walking off the job. 45,000 students will be home again from school this morning and faith abubey join us with more. good morning, faith. >> reporter: good morning to you, rebecca. this is the first time in portland's history that educators in the state's largest school districts are on strike, forcing about 45,000 students to stay home for a second day without classroom instruction. just in the last day, nearly 4,000 teachers have walked off the job. the portland association of teachers is demanding, among other thing, better pay and smaller class sizes. district officials say they don't have the funds to meet the union's current demands. now thousands of families across the state are scrambling to adjust their day to day

schedule, worried about their kid missing more class time, especially on the heels of the covid pandemic. the school board is putting pressure on the state legislature to find a solution. the union and the district will be back at the bargaining table tomorrow. robin? >> hopefully, a solution can be found quickly. all right, faith. thank you. we're gonna turn now to the rav 4 recall. the very popular toyota vehicle poses a serious fire risk. our transportation correspondent gio benitez is here with more and what to do if you have one of those 1.8 million cars. such a popular car. >> it really is, robin. good morning. that potential fire risk is very serious. we're talking about more than 1.8 million rav 4's involved. toyota said the recall is for certain 2013 to 2018 models. it has to do with replacement 12 volt batteries. some are just too small and may not be installed tightly enough. during a forceful turn it can short circuit and start a fire. toyota is still working on a fix. once that's done dealers will

what consumers are saying about a new tipping policy. that's all coming up. right now the latest on the kaitlin armstrong case. in opening arguments, prosecutors revealed evidence that she gunned down a professional cyclist who was a romantic rival. trevor ault has the story. good morning, trevor. >> reporter: good morning, george. authorities allege kaitlin armstrong used a fitness app to track mo wilson. to an apartment in austin. they say she murdered wilson, then fled the country, got caught, later tried to flee again. this morning kaitlin armstrong on trial for the murder of 25-year-old cyclist anna maria mo wilson shot to death in may of 2022. >> the last thing mo did on this earth was be in terror. >> reporter: in opening statements wednesday, prosecutors claiming armstrong's vehicle was spotted on surveillance near the crime scene and after authorities questioned her two days later, the former yoga instructor sold

her jeep for cash and fled to costa rica using her sister's passport. >> fly to costa rica. she had plastic surgery. she spent $6,425. to change her appearance. >> reporter: after 43 days on the run, u.s. marshals captured armstrong working at a hostel, sometimes teaching yoga with a different hair cut and color. authorities believe she viewed wilson as a romantic rival and killed her when she thought wilson was dating her ex-boyfriend. prosecutors promise to present a host of new video, ballistics and dna evidence on wilson's mike although armstrong has pleaded not guilty. >> not one witness saw kaitlin armstrong allegedly commit this murder because there isn't one. >> reporter: her attorneys argue she was never seen in person or on video at the crime scene and say the prosecution's evidence is not strong enough to convict her beyond a reasonable doubt.

they also claim she wasn't attempting to flee arrest when she took off for costa rica. >> you're going to hear she was content traveling to far off locations that intrigued her at the drop of a hat, on a moment's notice. >> reporter: just a few weeks ahead of the trial while in custody, armstrong was captured on video wearing those black and white prison pants, trying to flee from police after a doctor's appointment. authorities say she ran about a mile, trying to jump over this fence before she was captured again. cameras will no longer be allowed in court until closing arguments as testimony is now under way. but if convicted kaitlin armstrong faces 99 years without parole, so essentially a life sentence, guys. >> trevor, thank you. we turn to alex murdaugh. attorneys for the convicted murderer asked for the judge to be removed as they seek a new trial. eva pilgrim is here with that. you've been covering this since the beginning. so many twists and turns.

>> so many twists and turns, rebecca. the judge handling all the murdaugh cases was hand chosen, appointed by the south carolina supreme court chief justice himself. but now disgraced lawyer's legal team going back to the state's highest court saying they need a new judge. this morning murdaugh's team asking the south carolina supreme court to remove the judge from handling all future appeals, hearings and trials in the case, claiming he's biased. >> this has been perhaps one of the most troubling cases. >> reporter: in the filing murdaugh's lawyers say they don't think the judge did anything improper during the trial, but allege afterwards he made numerous statements in violation of the code of judicial conduct, like congratulating the jury for returning the correct verdict, statements and sentencing, evidencing personal bias and statements in public interviews after the trial. >> in my mind, no doubt he loved his family, but he committed an unforgivable, unimaginable crime

to see what happens, i order sushi from a restaurant near my california home and opt out of leaving a tip. while i don't see the new notice, my food arrives seven minutes after the promise window. after having worked in the industry myself i had to give the driver a tip. now one thing that many of us are experiencing beyond tip fatigue is fee fatigue. i can't keep track of all the add-ones. delivery fee, extended range fee, buy local fee and which fees actually go to the drivers. door dash says service fees are separate from tips and are shown to the customer before they decide what to tip. they vary by order. maybe it's easier to just hand cash to the person who is schlepping your food. i don't know. >> just like you did in the piece at the end there. you being in the service industry, and those of us who have been there. if you know the money is going to the driver or the delivery person, you're more apt.

dr. ashton will join us to break down the new guidance for lung cancer screening. >> important information there. top stories breaking at 8. we begin with the crisis in the middle east. some civilians including 400 americans are being allowed to leave gaza. this comes as israel is expanding its ground operations. want to go back to ian pannell. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning again, george. we are hearing around 400 americans gathering at the egypt border expecting to be able to finally escape after weeks of waiting. some that we've spoken to said they were contacted by the state department saying they should go to the border area and check if their names are on this list of people approved to cross. this list is being published every day. overnight two american doctors were among the first to leave, as hospitals in gaza plead for more aid to be allowed in. many are struggling to cope. with so many wounded and so few supplies left. the death toll inside gaza rising again.

the latest figures now more than 9,000 killed, according to the gaza health ministry run by hamas. israel responding to the october 7th massacre, where at least 1,400 were killed. israeli forces say they're pushing ever deeper into gaza. we're hearing the sound of heavy bombardment. they say they are nearly at the gates of the city. new video overnight shows their forces on the ground. hamas, incredibly, is still fighting back, releasing this video, saying it shows a bomb being dropped on israeli soldiers in the northeast and parts of the gaza strip. so escape for the few, but no relief for the many who aren't going to be allowed to leave. overnight president biden calling for humanitarian pause. but no signs now that the guns are about to fall silent. robin? >> thank you, as always, for your reporting. now to uber and lyft agreeing to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for short changing drivers. our transportation correspondent gio is back with that story. good morning again. >> good morning again. yeah, this is a major settlement for ride share drivers.

in fact the new york attorney general is calling it the largest wage theft settlement for her office. let's look at those numbers right now. uber and lyft agreeing to pay a combined $328 million for with holding money from drivers. that's $290 million from uber, $38 million from lyft. the state saying the companies wrongfully deducted certain taxes and fees from drivers as payment between 2014 and 2017. now the ag saying this. for years uber and lyft system atically cheated their drivers out of hundreds of millions in pay and benefits while they worked long hours in challenging conditions. drivers will now get back pay, along with mandatory paid sick leave. uber and lyft say they've been advocating for those changes for years. uber calling it a win for drivers. meanwhile lyft said it never violated any laws. >> a win for driver, thank you. we turn to the expanded recommendations for lung cancer screening.

our chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton is here with what the american cancer society is saying regarding current and former smokers. nice to see you. break it down, jen. >> good morning. this pertains to people at high risk for developing lung cancer and new from the american cancer society their updated recommendations start with an annual low dose cat scan of the chest because chest x-rays do not detect small lung tumors. they've expanded their age criteria now to include people 50-80 who smoke or formally smoke. that used to be 55-74. they're hoping to catch more people with that. these are people with what's called a 20 pack year smoke history. used to be 30. a pack year is just a way to calculate how long someone smoked. one pack a day for ten year, ten pack year, two packs a day for five years, also ten pack years. some simple math there. this pertain, rebecca, to people who are even asymptomatic.

this is not for everyone. we know 20% of lung cancer occurs in people who have never smoked but these potentially will include a lot more people who are eligible for screening. >> the bottom line, they're saying people who smoked less still need to be screened. why do we think this is happening? >> that's correct. they made these changes basically in line with other federal guidelines for screening. but the hope is that by broadening their criteria, including a lot more people. again, remember this ct scan used to be repeated every year. they're hoping to catch more earlier tumors. they estimate based on their model system, that they could reduce the number of deaths by 21% by expanding this criteria. >> game changer. >> it could be very very impactful. >> thank you, dr. ashton. george? coming up, brooke shields on her frightening health scare and what she says caused it. it is national cash back day. we are going to tell you how to enjoy savings while getting a jump start on your holiday shopping.

tomorrow on gma. right now we're going to get to our cover story. brooke shields health scare. the actress revealing she recently collapsed, suffered a seizure. stephanie ramos is here with more. >> reporter: brooke shields has opened up about a lot. now she's detailing this really frightening experience. this morning actress and model brooke shields opening up about a frightening health scare that landed her in the hospital. the 58-year-old making the revelation as a cover star for glamour magazine women of the year issue saying she had a, quote, full blown seizure just as she finished a one through for her one woman show in new york city, telling the magazine everything starts to go black, then my hands drop to my side and i go head first into the wall. i start having a grand mal seizure. it means frothing at the mouth, totally blue, trying to swallow my tongue. a grand mal seizure causes a loss of consciousness and violent muscle contractions due to a burst of

electricity in the brain often caused by epilepsy. these seizures can also be triggered by very low blood sugar, infection and very low sodium levels in the body. shields recalling, i had had too much water. i flooded my system and i drowned myself. >> too much water would decrease the amount of sodium in your body which can start as confusion that can progress to seizure, coma and, if not treated, death. cdc recommends you drink no more than six cups of water every hour. >> reporter: shields says she ended up in the icu contracting bronchitis during her hospital stay. an a-list leading man was by her side in the ambulance. friend and oscar nominated actor bradley cooper. shields saying, i thought to myself, this is what death must be like. you wake up and bradley cooper is going, i'm going to go to the hospital with you, brooke, and he's holding my hand.

the story? >> it's the origins story for the hunger games. it's a prequel film that goes into the history of the dictator. >> snow, president. you play the younger character played by donald sutherland. those are big shoes to film. >> they are very big shoes to fill. luckily, the director and i talked about giving ourselves artistic license to not copy cat donald's amazing performance. how could you? this is 65 years before. it is interesting to see the origin story to see how he became who he is and is it nature or nurture. >> this has been such an incredible phenomenon. what is it like to step in? do you feel pressure? >> of course. you feel pressure with everything you do. something that has such a dedicated fan base like the

hunger games, you don't want to disappoint anyone. we came in as fans. fans of the book. >> you must have been babies when you first saw it. >> exactly, yeah. i was like 9 or 10 when the first one came out. it was pretty intense to step in. we've been welcomed with open arms from not only francis, who directed catching fire and the mockingjay films but also the crew that came back to do these movies with us. >> tell us what the process was like on set. >> it was great. [ laughter ] the first thing i think of, it was one thing, i had never been to europe before. i have been to london, but never germany or poland. it was exploring a new place with some friends, you know, and getting to do all that. we had really good -- >> did you have time when you were filming to see the sights? >> you'd be surprised. >> oh, yeah. little bit. >> i feel like you an i were at work all the time.
