charges. his story as the founder and mastermind of ftx is surely one of the defining stories of this year and tonight. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez walks you through the cryptocurrency kingdom that all came crashing down. >> sam bankman freed showed no emotion as he stood facing a jury that found him guilty on all seven charges. his parents from the bay area were in the new york city courtroom in tears. bankman freed is convicted of stealing $10 million from customers. >> it became such a tangled web. you know, when you're talking about that much money. >> founder of silicon legal strategy andre tarkanian says the most fascinate thing angle to this case is how fast investors gave to ftx. there's this tremendous fear of missing out, of losing an opportunity to invest in the next hot company. >> and that fear is really strong in a space like crypto was. you know, a few years ago. and that leads to a lot of

pressure. pressure to move fast. close. fast. >> bankman freed, otherwise known as sbf, grew up around the stanford campus, which provided an impressive background. >> i think on campus there's sort of a feeling that people want to move past this to stop having to deal with it, which is certainly understandable. same bit. and freed is of course not actually a stanford alum, but he did grow up here. he is the son of two stanford law professors, joe bankman and barbara freed. >> before the trial, sbf sat down with abc's george stephanopoulos. >> a lot of people look at you and see bernie madoff. yeah, i mean, i don't think that's who i am at all. >> but i understand why they're saying that. >> bankman frees rise and fall in the cryptocurrency world was fast. tech experts say digital currency lacks regulation. >> when i teach this class about cryptocurrency to my students, each one of them, i give them the code they can create $1 trillion with their own cryptocurrency. tsay what is the protection? what is the assets that will support something like

now face federal charges if they're caught. it's being called the all hands on deck program. it's an effort to crack down on fentanyl distribution in the tenderloin and soma neighborhoods. san francisco's top prosecutor was quite forceful with the goal for this plan. >> we do have a war on fentanyl. it must be removed from our streets and it will be. >> abc7 news reporter j-r stone has more on the crackdown and tough talk from police. >> you can stop dealing or you will face the consequences of your actions. >> that's the message to street drug dealers in san francisco. tenderloin and it is a message now coming from federal authorities who say those individuals could face federal charges. >> my office is using targeted wiretaps, arrest and searches throughout the bay area to stem the flow of drugs and dealers coming into san francisco from nearby counties. >> the all hands on deck program involves police officers, sheriff's office deputies, chp

officers, dea agents, fbi agents and is targeted and will continue to target the distribution of fentanyl in san francisco. >> we aren't going anywhere in san francisco is no longer the place where anything goes on secret and select days once a week, the us attorney's office will charge arrested street drug dealers with federal crimes and fast tracked the cases where judgments are decided in less than three weeks. >> the also filed charges against those suspected of dealing near federal buildings already, the feds have brought charges against more than 30 people with more than 40 others facing local charges. the us attorney says that in the last four months, authorities have seized nearly 50 kilos of fentanyl and 12 kilos of meth off of tenderloin streets. dea officials put the blame on mexican cartels, get their supplies from china and work with honduran organizations, while the sinaloa cartel is primarily responsible for

manufacturing fentanyl, the drug trafficking in the tenderloin is primarily controlled by honduran organizations who commute into san francisco to peddle their poison. san francisco police chief bill scott, with a clear message to drug dealers who attempt to avoid his officers going forward. >> if you think you're going to outlast us, you're wrong. if you think you're going to adapt and outsmart us, you're wrong. if you think you're going to go away and let you continue to kill people in our city in record numbers, you're wrong. >> district attorney brooke jenkins says her office has filed 300 motions to detain suspected drug dealers in jail while their case is open. but get this, only 30 of those were granted by local judges charging these suspected dealers with federal crimes keeps them behind bars and pushes their cases forward right away. the us attorney says they would prosecute all of the cases, but they don't have the resources

it will be filtered by those clouds and the fog and fall warmth with us, 4:00 pm. we're talking about temperatures in the mid 60s to low 80s. still pretty mild at 7 p.m. as the clouds roll in. and we take a look at live doppler seven because there is an impressive storm out in the pacific. the first front that came through today didn't do much. the second system came will it bring us rain? i'll be back with the answer to that for your weekend. coming up. >> dan okay, sandhya, thanks very much. in the east bay there is now an urgent health warning out for anyone who stepped into the california grand casino dating back to 2018. cases of tuberculosis have been linked to the card room in pacheco. abc7 news reporter tim johns has the reaction tonight. >> from the outside it looks like it's business as usual at the california grand casino in pacheco. but if you've been inside contra costa, health officials say you could be at risk. on thursday, the public health department held a virtual news conference after scientists linked 11 confirmed cases of

tuberculosis. >> these individuals were not recently diagnosed, but what is new is that we, through the course of our investigation, we're able to determine that they all spent time inside the california grand casino in pacheco between the years of 2018 and 2023. >> the health department says tb can live inside someone's body for months or even years without causing any symptoms. that's one reason why public health is encouraging. anyone who has been inside the casino over the last five years to get tested. the california grand casino says it's cooperating fully with the county. they sent us a stath rer foremost commitment is to ensure the safety of our customers and employees. contra costa health has not identified any ongoing sources of transmission at the card room. as you can see, the casino is on a busy street here in pacheco. it's really a place where the community comes together. because of that, a lot of the folks we talked to say they have concerns about the tuberculosis cases. that includes juan gonzalez, who says he's been inside the casino

several times over the past few years. >> as i go in there to buy food and the last time i was in there was about two weeks ago. >> gonzalez says while he doesn't know much about tuberculosis, he wants to follow the official advice and get tested. >> that's that's news to me. i guess i should follow up with that then. >> others tell us they haven't been inside the casino for a while and for people like stuart, he plans to keep it that way. >> i wouldn't go go anytime soon , that's for sure. >> in pacheco, tim johns, abc seven news. >> things are changing at two of the bay area's most popular theme parks six flags, magic mountain and knott's berry farm are merging, creating a mega amusement park company. the merger will create an expanded portfolio of 42 iconic parks and nine resort properties across nearly 20 states, including canada and mexico. in the bay area, that means six flags, discovery kingdom in vallejo and cedar fair's great america in santa clara are now partners. officials say the merger will help theme park profits and

expansion efforts. a guests will be able to get season passes to both parks. california is great for theme parks. >> people are going to amusement parks. the numbers are off the charts. it's going to be a mega company. it's a win win for both . >> earlier in the year, the santa clara great america location announced it will close in just over ten years after selling its land. it's unclear if this new deal affects that decision. we shall see. new at 11 esperanza high school in east palo alto celebrates the day of the dead. the festival tonight consisted of vibrant colors, cultural displays, jazz music and a community altar for students. the day of the dead is a mexican tradition that honors family and ancestors who have passed away. mia cantu was a high school senior who was born in mexico, says tonight's event was very meaningful. >> you know, we've left our our own cities and came here for a better opportunity. but also having that kind of like transition implemented here when

system. >> in an emailed statement, an uber spokesperson tells abc7 news sexual assault is a horrific crime and we take every report of this nature very seriously. while we cannot comment on pending litigation, we are deeply committed to the safety of all users on the uber platform. end of the statement. the attorney for the victims says one of the goals of the litigation is for uber to make changes that will increase rider safety on the platform. listen to this. 10, 10% of middle and high schoolers are using e-cigarettes regularly. that's according to this year's survey by the fda and the cdc. on the bright side here, the use of e-cigarette is down by 4% from last year among high schoolers from 14 to 10. but middle schoolers saw a slight increase this year. about 1 in 10 of both middle and high school students reported they've currently they are currently using a tobacco products. the federal government is one step closer to approving

a groundbreaking new treatment for sickle cell disease. the food and drug administration could vote next month to approve a treatment that uses the gene editing crispr technique. committee reviewed the science yesterday, but did not make any type of recommendation. one that's pending and comes company studies. the treatment was considered safe if approved, it would be the fda's first time ever approving a drug that uses crispr sickle cell disease is caused by a genetic defect. it often leads to premature death and disproportion occurs among people of african, middle-eastern and indian descent in the north bay community and culture come together this weekend in san rafael for the annual dia de los muertos event. abc7 news anchor ama daetz has a preview. >> altar viewing arts and crafts and cultural performances will welcome the community to the 35th annual dia de los muertos event in san rafael saturday. the multicultural center of marin is hosting and expects a couple thousand people to attend. families taking time to
