better bay area for the stunning marine sanctuaries that dot the california coast are critical for the continued health of ocean species. >> areas like the gulf of the farallones cordell bank and monterey bay. but if we think of them as massive cities in the sea, new research is suggesting we may also need something smaller in the future, maybe closer to a string of airbnbs for conservation because species are moving from these areas. >> larvae are drifting through ocean currents. >> nur arif jamal is a marine conservation scientist at stanford's dory school of sustainable city. his work includes documenting a severe marine heat wave off the coast of mexico. the kind of event that can both threaten marine habitats and push species to migrate and, you know, as climate change is happening, species are moving. >> they're kind of shifting a little bit. their distribution. >> but right now, we've seen about ten of these what appears
11:47 pm
to be juvenile white sharks in the area. >> recently, the abc seven climate team profiled the unexpected appearance of juvenile great white sharks in monterey bay, much farther north than their normal nursing habitats off southern california. while a similar northward migration by the predatory california market, squid impacted salmon populations in the gulf of alaska. fellow stanford doha researcher larry crowder studies marine food chains. >> the data show that marine animals are moving poleward in the northern hemisphere to the north in the summer, southern hemisphere to the south. and that's thought to be related to long term trends in climate in this most recent study, the stanford team identified areas off the coast of california and mexico that might act as safe zones, many containing healthy kelp forests or other habitats. >> we have this amazing dataset in california, but also in mexico based on satellite that maps kelp forests. in the past 40 years. so there are places
11:48 pm
that the satellite always detect that the kelp is there. >> the goal now to possibly turn the areas into an international string of migration sanctuaries, a pathway where species on the move could easily check in and check out as they adjust to changes and fluctuation patterns brought by climate change. >> and speaking of our micro climate expert here, spencer christian joins us with a little look at our weather and how normal it is or unnormal. >> all right. well, it's pretty normal, j.r. microclimates are all getting hit with a little bit of rainfall tonight. as you can see on live doppler seven. we we've had pockets of light rain and showers. that pattern will continue overnight. so it'll be a wet commute tomorrow morning and evening. this storm ranks level one on the exclusive abc seven storm impact scale through tomorrow. showers periods of light rain, less than a quarter of an inch of rain likely from this system. but we will have slippery roads and breezy conditions forecast animation shows the activity will increase in the early morning hours just as the commute is getting underway
11:49 pm
between 5:00 and about 7 a.m. then later in the day, it'll sweep southward. the north bay has been getting most of the rainfall, but the south bay will get quite a bit tomorrow afternoon and the early evening before the storm winds down. and again, we'll end up with rainfall totals under a quarter of an inch for most locations in the sierra. expect 1 to 2in of snow above 7000ft in the greater lake tahoe area from this storm, which is bringing some cold air with it. here's our accuweather seven day forecast on tuesday. we get some partial clearing a little bit milder under sunny skies on wednesday thursday still mainly sunny but beginning to cool down a bit. friday brings our next best chance of rain. j.r. thanks, spencer. >> here's chris with a preview of sports. >> j.r. coming up in sports, a wild week nine across the nfl. the niners were on the bye week. and george kittle provides a super salute to a local first responder. the heartwarming story next. in sports
