>> good monday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. good morning to you. >> i'm rhiannon ally. we want to begin with the historic moment that will take place in a new york courtroom today. former president donald trump is expected to take the witness stand at his fraud trial today. >> it follows testimony last week from his two sons, his daughter, ivanka is scheduled to testify this wednesday. >> trump's legal woes do not seem to be hurting his campaign, though. a new poll shows trump leading president biden in nearly every battleground state with voters concerned about the economy. here's abc's alison kosik. >> former president donald trump is set to take the stand today in his own defense at his civil fraud trial in new york. trump reportedly telling advisers he's not concerned about testifying. the new york times says trump has held multiple preparation sessions there won't be any cameras in the court today for his testimony. he had declined to answer the question during his deposition last year, trump invoked the fifth amendment hundreds of times and read a

statement attacking new york attorney general letitia james, who is expected to call him to the witness stand today. we cannot permit a renegade and out of control prosecutor to use this investigation as a means of advancing her political career. the judge already determined trump overstated his net worth by as much as $2.2 billion. but now the attorney general is seeking $250 million in damages and wants to prohibit trump from doing business in new york. >> the more that the former president says and goes into, the more record he creates that can be used against him. frankly in this case and potentially in the other cases that are pending against him. and remember, those other cases are criminal cases. >> trump stormed out of court last month after the judge fined him $15,000 for twice violating a gag order. the case is unfolding with one year to go until election day. a new poll finds voters aren't happy with

the frontrunners in either party . about 3 in 10 say they would be more likely to vote for the democratic or gop candidate if it were not biden or trump. but another poll finds good news for trump. he's leading biden in these five crucial swing states with more than 70% of voters saying biden is too old to serve another term. the most eye popping number for democrats. trump leads biden by 11 points in nevada, a state biden won in 2020. >> voters are just plain frustrated. they across the board, 76% of adults in this poll say the country is headed in the wrong direction. only 23, less than a quarter of the country say that we're headed on the right track. >> but trump is getting some bad news ahead of testimony today. the governor of iowa is expected to endorse ron desantis this today, not trump. andrew rhiannon. alison thank you. >> israel's military is reporting progress moving deeper into gaza. secretary of state

antony blinken made two surprise visits yesterday to the west bank and baghdad in hopes of preventing israel's war against hamas from spreading. meanwhile as the civilian death toll in gaza rises, pro-palestinian rallies were held in major cities around the world. authorities fired tear gas and a water cannon at protesters near near a military base housing us troops in turkey. abc's liz landers is here now with the very latest. liz, good morning. >> andrew, us officials say that more than 300 american citizens have been able to leave gaza in recent days, but about 100 are left behind. and as the fighting escalates this morning, airstrikes are intensifying in gaza as israel reports progress in its ground attack, saying it's now cut gaza in two surrounding gaza city ahead of an expected assault. the israeli military over the weekend took journalists into gaza. abc's ian pannell was among them for the first time since this war began,

we go into gaza, the video we filmed was checked by the idf for operational security embedded with troops from israel's 401st armored brigade for a few hours, the first time they've taken journalists into the war zone since it began. >> we were driven about three miles into the gaza strip towards the northern side of gaza city. the landscape is apocalyptic. we're not allowed to say exactly where we are. you can see the tanks next to me. you can hear the sound of the tank fire. we're hearing gunfire. it's still remains an incredibly active zone elsewhere in gaza, more carnage. >> israel yesterday striking a refugee camp which according to the associated press, lies in an area where palestinians were told by the israeli military to seek refuge. the hamas run health ministry claims 53 people were killed. the ministry says so far in the conflict, more than 9700 palestinian have died. but israel's ambassador to the un is casting doubt on that

death toll. >> we shouldn't believe or take any numbers coming out of gaza at face value, everything is being controlled by the terrorists of hamas. there is no humanitarian crisis in gaza. >> us secretary of state antony blinken is traveling throughout the region, including a surprise visit to iraq. the biden administration has been pushing for a humanitarian pause in the fighting. >> the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, this weekend said there will be no cease fire without the release of hostages. >> hamas is believed to be holding some 240 hostage, including americans. meanwhile, netanyahu has suspended a junior member of his cabinet who appeared to suggest that he was open to a nuclear attack on gaza. rhiannon all right. >> thank you, liz. as tensions rise over the war, a hate crime investigation is now underway at stanford university after an arab muslim student was injured in a hit and run. the student says the driver made eye contact

before hitting him and then shouted a derogatory remark and drove away. students claim the school was slow to notify them completely irresponsible for like an alert to have taken so long to come out. >> it's ridiculous. it was a hate crime. it was an absolute violation of his ability to exist as a student. on campus. campus security has been increased and stanford's president called hate based violence morally reprehensible. >> well, now to boston and the search for a suspected killer. police believe after stabbing his girlfriend, he took off for africa. here's abc's andrea fujii this morning. >> an international manhunt to find a massachusetts man suspected of fatally stabbing his girlfriend whose body was found at boston's logan airport. >> mikey was a ray of sunshine in everybody's life. i love was contagious. >> everybody knows that maggie and his family reported her

missing last monday. >> and on wednesday, the 31 year old's body was found inside her vehicle in the airport parking garage. police have identified 40 year old kevin kangas as the suspect. they say he was seen on the surveillance video and boarded a plane to kenya shortly after the killing. nbc's family gathered last night to remember her as a caring nurse, beloved by all who knew her. >> we want this guy arrested as soon as possible so that we know that the process, the process of justice is beginning so that our healing can start. >> massachusetts police have issued an arrest warrant for kingarth. they're now working with authorities in kenya to find him. the us does have an extradition treaty with kenya, so experts say it's likely kenyan authorities will cooperate in trying to find kingarth. rhiannon andrew. >> andrea, thank you. police say a man involved in a custody dispute sparked an 18 hour standoff at a major airport in

europe. the hostage situation forced the closure of the hamburg, germany airport until the man was finally arrested. he drove through a fence to enter the airport, raising a lot of questions about the security. >> 45,000 students in portland, oregon, will stay home again with public teachers on strike. the teachers are demanding a 20% pay raise and smaller class sizes. the district says it doesn't have the money. picket lines could soon form on the las vegas strip as well. the union for 35,000 casino workers has set a deadline for thursday if their demands for better pay are not met. >> it is time now for your monday weather. has triggered a state of emergency outside of asheville, north carolina. officials in henderson county say the flames have engulfed more than 400 acres, destroying two homes. a look at the radar shows clear skies over much of the nation, but rain is expected today from washington state to northern

large groups. >> tyson foods is recalling nearly 30,000 pounds of chicken nuggets the company has received reports of small pieces of metal found in dinosaur shaped nuggets. the affected nuggets have a best buy date of september fourth, 2024. we turn now to artificial intelligence being used by high school students to distribute fake news photos of their classmates. >> it's an issue that is hitting home in new jersey this morning. a call for action at this high school in new jersey where students are accused of using artificial intelligence to create fake nude photos of their female classmates. >> my first initial feeling, obviously, was a shock to hear such a thing from from your daughter. >> when 14 year old francesca armani was called into the principal's office at westfield high, she was told a student created fake nude images of her using ai. >> so i came home and told my mom and i told her that we have to do something about this

because it isn't fair to the girls and it's just not right that francesca's mother says she filed a police report. >> she says only one male student served a short suspension. >> i just feel like bearing comfortable and very scared, like a lot of other girls agree with me. there >> reportedly at least 30 victims at the school. the principal recently sent a letter to parents saying students brought to our attention that some of our students had used artificial intelligence to create images from original photos. at this time, we believe that any created images have been deleted and are not being circulated. this is a very serious incident. we are continuing to investigate it. the mounties say they have not seen the fake images and abc news has not confirmed they exist. experts say fake nude images can be created using existing photos from social media, which are then uploaded to an app that removes clothing using ai. >> they're very compelling and convincing photos so that it really does look like it's a picture of the victim nude. it
