super bowl of world economy. the people are expected to visit san francisco for the asia pacific economic cooperation summit starting on saturday. among them will be world leaders such as president joe biden. so expect security to be very tight. now amorous road closures could make getting around the city a real challenge, as abc seven news reporter ryan curry reports, it has commuters looking for alternative options. >> we got everybody coming in. it's an important summit. so, you know, you have to just take it. just go with the flow. >> that flow is navigating a maze of road closures and detours. golden gate transit is shutting down its park and ride lots. sam trans riders brace for route changes and muni bus drivers say they've been preparing for weeks. the t and f trains as well as 12 bus lines will be rerouted during the conference. the five busses actually going to be one of the lines rerouted during apec. and we spoke to some of these drivers. they say there's one thing people need to bring when

taking muni next week. >> just a lot of patience. just breathe in and breathe out. >> patience is key. not just for people taking muni, but also for chanel wylie, who drives the five bus. not only is her route changing, she commutes from the east bay and plans to take bart. >> next week i'm going to do the bart and make sure that i get off and can walk, you know, directly to back and forth, to my terminal, you know, because it's going to it's going to be a mess. bart is one of several agencies not changing their routes or schedules, joining caltrans, ac transit and bay ferry. >> they expect it to be very crowded. >> we're going to be adding capacity because we think it's very likely that more people are going to be riding bart next week. >> bart says they will increase the size of their trains. so each or eight cars. their new schedule also means nine trains go to sfo each hour, making it convenient for people flying into town. >> this is an opportunity for public transit to shine. this is why we have it. you know, when we have these kinds of impacts on the bay bridge, folks really do set their patterns for their

commute. but this is a major disruption for people. >> anyone who takes the ferry shouldn't worry as they plan to run their full schedule when these road closures start. it's best to follow the signs and use transit. ryan curry, abc seven news. activists with the oil and gas action network are calling for president biden and apec leaders to end the expansion of fossil fuels. >> they put up a large 75 foot banner over the bay bridge today, ahead of next week's apec summit. it reads. biden apec s end fossil fuels. activists say more fossil fuels will increase the production of oil and coal, which could cause more harm to the climate. the banner is visible from the westbound lanes of the bay bridge right before treasure island reopening just in time for apec is the united nations plaza in san francisco. >> it's gone through a makeover and the hope is this is the start of a much brighter future. abc7 news reporter tara campbell was there and shows us what's changed. you from a deputy dancing to skateboarders skating

. >> a lot of fanfare wednesday for the reopening of san francisco's united nations plaza. >> we want this to be an exciting place for community. the plaza getting a multi-million dollar facelift complete with fitness equipment, permanent ping pong tables, cornhole and more, and a new skate park at the heart of the project. nothing is going to make this space more more exciting than to see the skateboard community completely descend on this area like never before. >> the plaza has long been a hub for the open air drug market. the city working to clean it up ahead of apec. the economic summit expected to draw tens of thousands of people to the city next week. i'm at the point now i will try anything to get my neighborhood back. >> dale seymour is the founder of multiple nonprofits helping people in the tenderloin. this appears to be a normal ization of an area that just a week ago was total hectic. >> i think if they empower skaters, we're going to be able to keep this area clean.

area app. >> in the east bay investigators are looking into whether a fire that tore through a san leandro 7-eleven was set on purpose. a spokesperson for the alameda county fire department says this started as a brush fire next to the convenience store on 136th avenue at east 14th street. flames eventually spread to the store, catching the roof and attic on fire. several witnesses tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher when it started, but that didn't work. thankfully, nobody was hurt and the family of an oakland man who died while in custody at the santa rita jail in dublin are demanding answers and accountability. leading the charge is alameda county district attorney pamela price's newly formed public accountability unit. abc7 news reporter anser hassan takes a closer look. >> something unusual and very disturbing happened at the santa rita jail in november of 2021. >> alameda county deputy

district attorney zachary lindhout says maurice monk died in custody in his cell at santa rita jail. his task is to figure out why it appears that he may have been dead upwards of 72 hours before he was finally be observed by deputies 15th. the investigation will be led by the newly formed public accountability office, which has met with monks family. >> i'm well aware of the problems that we have faced at santa rita county jail of the number of in-custody deaths in this county, which are unacceptable. >> the da's office says monk, who is in his 40s, was arrested in october 2021 for refusing to get off a transit bus he couldn't afford bail, so he spent over a month locked up. the family recently won a multi-million dollar wrongful death lawsuit. the family says monk struggled with mental health issues and may not have been given his medication when his sister tried desperately to get him medication during the month that he was at santa rita

jail. >> and she was thwarted at every turn. >> da price says her predecessor , nancy o'malley, opened an investigation version which didn't lead to any conclusive results. lenowitz says under his investigation, the sheriff's department has now agreed to deliver the information requested, such as police reports and jail logs. >> i discovered that a great deal of very basic investigatory materials had not yet been provided to my office, things that could possibly be provided within 15 minutes of any diligent search. da price says santa rita jail is the fifth largest county jail in the united states. >> her office isn't saying that anything malicious happened surrounding monk's death. but she adds that even neglect won't be tolerated. too many people have died in santa rita county jail, and it is only by holding people accountable that we believe that we will begin to get this problem under control. >> in oakland, anser hassan abc7 news. >> it's been five years since the deadliest wildfire in

california history. the camp fire broke out in the town of paradise in butte county on this day in 2018. that fire destroyed nearly the entire town, killing 85 people and the recovery process has been pretty slow. today, only a third of the population has returned. about 20. that's all of the homes have been rebuilt. many longtime residents say they're being priced out of the area by the high cost of new construction. the latest from the middle east now, where the situation in gaza is deteriorate, fighting for palestinian civilians who were caught in the crossfire of the israeli hamas conflict. aid is trickling in, but fuel remains in short supply. and those conditions have prompted the us to call on the israelis to agree to humanitarian pauses in the fighting. but israel says it wants hostages released before the country will agree to a cease fire. abc's ines de la cuetara reports from the war zone in israel. >> israeli armored vehicles are moving across the israel-gaza border in search of hamas militants as the northern region

of the territory around gaza city continues to come under heavy bombing from israel's defense forces. tall flames leapt into the air as smoke rose above buildings, as the idf said its offensive was targeting the militants tunnel network. the idf says they have destroyed at least 130 hamas tunnels since the beginning of the war. hamas releasing video it claims shows its fighters are still firing rockets into israel despite the israeli ground offensive. meanwhile, thousands of palestinians continue to head south trying to flee the fighting. the red cross appealing for protection for civilians and aid workers in gaza. the agency saying it had to abandon a plan to deliver medical supplies to palestinians in gaza city after one red cross worker was injured and two of its vehicles damaged. >> these are not conditions under which humanitarians can work and meet urgently required needs of the civilian population. >> many, including president biden, are calling for a pause in the fighting so that more civilians can escape and additional hostages freed. but

secretary of state antony blinken in japan with his g7 counterparts, believes an immediate cease fire would be counterproductive. >> the unacceptable result it would likely bring about hamas left in place with more than 200 hostages with the capacity and stated intent to repeat october 7th again and again. and again in israel, photos of some 240 people believed held hostage by hamas were placed on seats reserved for guests at israel's parliament, the chairman of the body said lawmakers are praying for their safe return. >> there are reports of negotiations to release roughly a dozen hostages in exchange for a three day humanitarian pause. but according to the reports, israel won't accept just 10 to 15 hostages. they want at least 50 hostages to be released. and as de la cuetara, abc news, jerusalem. >> a huge recall involving cruz's robo taxis. the connection to a san francisco incident and what's going to be changed in the vehicles. and the fda approved another diabetes drug for weight loss. we'll get

that suv on the tracks after it was hit. police say it happened shortly before 730 this morning in the area of embarcadero, west and oak street. we're still waiting for an update on the condition of the person who was taken to the hospital. >> new developments now with cruise, general motors. they own cruise. they're recalling the driverless robo taxis following a crash that involved a cruise car that dragged a pedestrian in san francisco. abc7 news reporter lena howland learned the cruise software is going to be updated. >> cruise is taking steps to get its robo taxis back on the road after california's dmv forced the company to pause driverless rides in october. >> i would say that cruise has lost all public trust and they need to start over again. >> cruise is now issuing a voluntary recall of its vehicles for a software update. nearly five weeks after a person was

first thrown in front of a cruise vehicle during a hit and run crash and dragged 20ft by the driverless vehicle as it attempted to move out of traffic. in a statement wednesday morning, cruise said in part, the recall addresses circumstances in which the collision detection subsystem may cause the av to attempt to pull over instead of remaining stationary. when a pullover is not desired. san francisco board of supervisors president aaron peskin says it's a little late for that. >> this just means that this product is absolutely not ready and that state and federal regulators have not done their job to get in front of this. and meanwhile, you have cruise going. these things don't drive drunk. doesn't matter if they don't drive decently. >> a computer science professor at cal state east bay says this recall means fixing code just like an iphone update, except this code tells the cars how to behave without a driver there. and they're trained based on data from previous experience. >> we would we would need to see

that this kind of system that work based on the experience is similar to the same way that a human behave. the more experienced the person has, the more person, the better person can react to the new scenarios, cruise says. >> in addition to this voluntary recall, they are also establishing a chief safety officer position that will report directly to the ceo. that's in addition to also hiring on a third party engineering firm and a third party law firm to review the company's response to the october second incident in san francisco, lena howland, abc seven news. >> some sports news. although brandon crawford's days as a san francisco giant are likely over sounds like he might be playing in 2024. his agent says the shortstop is receiving some interest from other teams and is weighing his options. the bay area native spent his entire 13 year career with the giants. it was thought he would actually announce his retirement at the end of this past season. but crawford's agent says he would

consider changing positions, maybe moving to second base to keep playing. crawford, known for his stellar defense through the years, the 37 year old is expected to take his time before making a final decision. >> a group of san francisco fishermen, they're suing tire manufacturers over what they call an environmental disaster. the pacific coast federation of fishermen's association, based in san francisco, says a rubber preservative used in tires is killing migrating salmon. the chemical comes off tires during regular use and ends up in storm drains. coho salmon can die within hours of ingesting it. the group wants tire manufacturers to develop an environmental friendly alternative. the lawsuit names companies like goodyear, bridgestone and continental. they have not commented on the lawsuit. bay area residents may soon be able to waste away in a real life margaritaville. it's still in the early planning stages, but this week the napa county entered into exclusive negotiations with camp margaritaville resorts to look at developing the steel canyon area of lake berryessa. the

is out there. clear skies, 63 in the city. it is 66 in oakland, in mountain view, 70 in san jose and currently 67 degrees in palo alto. want to show you what's going on. high pressure nudging in just enough to provide us with downsloping winds and push those temperatures up. winds are not strong. they're just coming offshore this morning. we did have gusty winds in the hills and this downsloping wind is what brought us the warmth today . here's a system that looks impressive on live doppler seven. that's coming our way friday morning. unfortunately it doesn't have a whole lot of moisture by the time it reaches us. so i'll show you what we'll end up with right now from our east bay hills camera. looking at mount diablo, clear and colder in the morning, cooler and cloudier in the afternoon. we're looking at isolated shower chance friday dry and warmer for your weekend and then a major pattern change is coming our way next week. so first thing tomorrow morning mid to upper 30s and our coldest north bay valleys clear skies to start the day. we're going to see 40s elsewhere here and it will be

colder than this morning. the air mass is pretty dry right now. those temperatures will tumble as a result of clear conditions. tomorrow afternoon, the clouds will be on the increase, low to upper 60s for most of you. a few low 70s around san jose and morgan hill. as we check out what's ahead. this is tomorrow morning starting out clear and then those clouds just start increasing friday. the computer models showing the possibility of a couple of showers in the morning. best chance will be in the north bay. your weekend is dry. and then next week, here comes the series of systems. so to a p m on tuesday, we have the wet weather moving in. it's wide spread rain for wednesday. sierra will be looking at a rain snow mix. this continues thursday. the pattern goes on for friday with still some wet weather and possibly even into saturday. this is one computer model. this is the same computer model projecting rainfall totals over the five day period. san francisco, over two inches of rain. santa barbara over seven

zepp bound to patients with at least one weight related health condition that would include a high blood pressure, high cholesterol, as well as diabetes . now, diabetes drugs being used for weight loss is certainly not new. ozempic is the one you probably heard about, talked about the most. been in the headlines a lot. joining us now is dr. diana thiara, the medical director of ucsf's weight management program. doctor, thanks for joining us. thanks for having me. so tell us about zepp bound. can you explain how something that was originally designed, i guess, to treat diabetes works well for weight loss? >> yeah. so the way zepp bound works is it works to improve insulin secretion, which is the component that helps with diabetes, but it also works at the level of your brain to help promote this feeling of fullness so that you crave fewer foods. and it also works on your

stomach to keep food in your stomach longer so that you feel more full at the level of your stomach as well. so what kind of health benefits do users see when they take drugs like this to lose weight? >> specifically? and are there any drawbacks? >> yeah. so zepp bound is fda approved for anyone with a bmi. greater than or equal to 30 or a bmi greater than or equal to 27 with a comorbidity. and so with significant amounts of weight loss, you really can see improvements in things like high blood pressure, high cholesterol , sleep apnea, fatty liver. and for patients who lose significant amounts of weight like we're seeing with the zepp bound, you can actually come off of those medications. there's also weight related problems like joint pain, arthritis and with significant amounts of weight loss, you can have improved functionality, tsay mobility. and we also see general improvements in quality of life. so a lot of positive. drawbacks, definitely are

related to side effects. it's not normal to be throwing up on these types of medications. i think we see that in social on social media quite regularly. but for patients who are taking these medications, if you feel so sick that you can't eat, you really should be talking to your doctor about whether or not this is a good medication or if you're at the right dose. and then just like any type of rapid weight loss, we don't want you to be losing large amounts of weight quickly because you will also lose large amounts of muscle and losing muscle can be dangerous and problematic as you age. >> all right. any difference between zepp bound and ozempic? do they work basically the same way? >> they're different. so ozempic or wegovy, which is what we actually use for obesity medicine is just a glp one receptor agonist. so it works on just one type of receptor in the brain and gut and pancreas. and zepp bound also called tirzepatide, has an added receptor agonist called gip. so

gip also helps with lipolysis, which is burning a little bit more fat. so there are slight differences in the mechanisms of action and higher rates of weight loss. with the zepp bound than with wegovy. >> interesting. so for a while we were hearing stories about diabetes patients having a difficult time getting ozempic because so many people were taking it for weight loss and the diabetes people really needed it and couldn't get it. will this help now that you have another drug that's out there that's been approved? ed that's the hope. >> but it's too hard to say. wegovy was approved for use in patients with obesity, but there were issues getting enough supply of wegovy. so then patients started using ozempic because they are the same generic formulation and similarly with zepp bound there is manjaro, which is the formulation used for diabetics. and so the hope is that perhaps the pharmaceutical company that's making zepp bound has learned from some of the issues
