what we say publicly about the status of the talks. >> what do we know about how many hostages there are? >> we think there's about 240 total in the population. we know there's less than ten americans in that group. it's a mix of many different nations represented in that population. course, israel is also, they have citizens in that hostage population. it's about 240 or so. >> what possible incentive does hamas have to release the hostages? >> i'll let hamas speak for itself. sometimes they might be willing to release hostages for additional humanitarian aid to get in or for potentially exchange of what they believe to be political prisoners in israel. there's a lot that goes into their calculations. what we want to make sure is not only can we secure their release, george, but that when we get that release secured, that we can get them safely out of gaza and into israel, into safer hands.
7:15 am
that requires this idea of a temporary humanitarian pause. >> we saw the second round of air strikes against iranian backed forces. are you concerned this is gonna escalate? >> we don't want to it escalate. we're sending a strong signal to the revolutionary guard corps and supreme leader in tehran. we're not looking for a war with iran, but we will do what we have to do to protect our troops and our forces. these proxy groups have a choice to make. we struck again last night. we'll certainly do it again if we need to. >> do you have any idea what an end game looks like? i know the administration is saying israel should not occupy gaza, but who can control that territory if and when the fighting stops? >> that's what we're trying to work out right now with our partners in the region, including talking to mahmoud abbas the palestinian authority president. as you heard secretary blinken say in tokyo yesterday, we believe the future of gaza needs to be in the hands of the palestinian people. they need to be in a self-determinant role. we still believe in a two state solution. there's a long way to go to that.
7:16 am
whatever happens to the palestinian people, they need to have the determining vote and the voice in what that looks like. >> are we getting to the point where we need a cease fire? >> we're not at a point right now where we would support a general cease fire. it's important to remember what we're talking about. a general cease fire means everybody lays your arms down and you talk about the end of this conflict. to do that right now would be a benefit to hamas. it would give them time. it would give them time to resource plan additional attacks. it would also legitimatize what they did on october 7th. there's still an operational campaign going after their leadership. we believe israel has a right to do that and we'll continue to make sure they get the tools and capabilities. >> john kirby, thanks as always. robin? >> all right, george. thanks to you. now the breaking news overnight after 118 days, an end to the hollywood strike. sag-aftra reached a tentative deal with the studios. jamie lee curtis posting in celebration writing, perseverance pays off. whit johnson is in times square, has those details for us.
