>> good friday morning, everyone. i'm andrew dymburt. i'm andrew fujii in for rhiannon. >> we begin with safety concerns in the sky ahead of the upcoming holiday season. >> the airports are record crowds this thanksgiving and now a top federal safety official is voicing concern about understaffing in the industry. is putting airline passengers at risk. this morning, aviation experts are sounding the alarm ahead of the holiday travel season about the risk of close calls at airports around the country. >> while these events are incredibly rare, our safety system is showing clear signs of strain that we cannot ignore. the lead investigator at the ntsb told senators yesterday that a shortage of air traffic controllers is leading to fatigue and distraction, likely contributing to a growing list of planes nearly colliding on takeoff and landing. it only takes one missed warning to become a tragedy. one incorrect response to destroy public confidence in a system that has been built over decades. >> the faa identified 23 close

calls in the last year, including a delta plane at jfk in new york, almost colliding with an american airlines flight on the wrong runway. and in austin, texas, a fedex cargo plane came within 100ft of a southwest flight packed with passengers. >> southwest fort fedex is on the go. >> multiple incidents were linked to mistakes by air traffic controllers. their union president says current schedules include mandatory overtime and routine six day work weeks and ten hour shifts. >> this leads to fatigue. last year's controller controllers at 40% of our facilities worked six day work weeks at least once a month in several of our facilities require six day work weeks and ten hour days every single week. >> meanwhile, the faa says it's now forming a committee to examine mental health among pilots after an off duty alaska airlines pilot allegedly tried to crash a plane. that pilot told investigators he'd been suffering from mental health issues and had recently taken psychedelic mushrooms. is a far different kind of emergency for

this charter plane flying from london to orlando, forced to turn around at 14,000ft. when the crew realized four windows were flapping in the wind with missing or damaged window panes, investigators say the windows were damaged by high powered lights used during a film shoot on the plane. the previous day. as for the air traffic controllers shortage, the faa says it's trying to hire as many people as possible. but controllers are forced to retire at age 57 and training and certifying new ones can take up to five years. >> the white house says israel has agreed to stop the fighting in gaza for four hours each day to allow civilians to flee. and critics say that's not enough. pro-palestinian protesters demanding a cease fire occupied the lobby of the new york times building in new york last night, demanding more be done to help civilians in gaza. meanwhile, back in the middle east, more us troops have come under attack following us airstrikes in the region. abc's liz landers has the latest. liz, good morning, andrea. >> these continued airstrikes on

us forces in the middle east have now injured 56 people, all amid growing concerns of a wider conflict in the region. this morning, new video showing the moment a us airstrike hits a weapons storage facility in syria. the explosion in retaliation for iranian backed militia groups who have continued to hit us troops in iraq and syria. a total of 46 times since october 17th. the pentagon vowing to strike again at a, quote, time and place of our choosing if they continue this as the conflict between israel and hamas have entered a new phase of fighting, this video showing continued bombardment of gaza overnight at the small area already subject to more than 10,000 civilian casualties, according to the hamas run gaza health ministry. but some relief for those in the crossfire for the white house saying israel has agreed to expand for our combat pauses in northern gaza, creating safe corridors for civilians to

even as hamas tries to prevent them from fleeing andrew. >> liz landers for us in washington, dc. liz thank you. now to an exclusive interview with the parents of jillian ludwig. she's the college student killed by a stray bullet in nashville, tennessee. police say the suspect, shaquille taylor, was aiming at a car, but his bullet hit ludwig as the 18 year old was walking in a park. taylor is now in custody. he was charged with aggravated assault back in april. but court appointed doctors found him incompetent to stand trial and he was set free because he did not meet state requirements for involuntary commitment. there's a new push to change the law. in the meantime, jillian's parents face a crushing loss. >> there's a piece of my heart that was taken from me. >> she was thriving so well and doing so well in so many ways. in every way. just two days ago. and for it to all change so suddenly, it's hard to it's hard to process. it's impossible to

process. >> later on good morning america, how jillian's parents want lawmakers to change the law regarding mental health needs and access to guns. now to a political earthquake described as a nightmare scenario for democrats. >> senator joe manchin is making a move that could change the balance of power in washington. this morning, new details on how senate minority leader mitch mcconnell reportedly helped to orchestrate a political bombshell from washington. senator joe manchin, the conservative democrat from west virginia, says he will not seek reelection, giving republicans a major opportunity to flip his senate seat. >> i believe in my heart of hearts that i have accomplished what i set out to do for west virginia. >> senator mcconnell reportedly worked for more than a year to get manchin to retire. politico reports mcconnell's plan became a reality last fall when he met with the popular republican governor of west virginia. jim justice. convincing justice to run for senate against manchin, knowing manchin could lose in the deeply red state, manchin

toxic work environment, including verbal abuse was paid less than another male employee, and quit in 2019. during an emotional and mental breakdown. >> when you're going to make trouble, make it big. >> but testimony from de niro's girlfriend, tiffany chen, claimed robinson had a romantic interest in de niro. wish that she was his wife and that robin's son was having imaginary intimacy with him. de niro lashed out at robinson in court, yelling shame on you as he testified, she stole $85,000 in airline miles from his company and that instead of working, she binge watched, quote, astounding hours of tv shows on netflix. in the end, the jury agreeing not to hold de niro personally liable for mr. de niro. >> it's a complete victory. he he had lots of claims lodged against him personally over the last four years. and they they have all been either dismissed in the course of the litigation or rejected by the jury. >> de niro's lawyers say
